NEW DELHI: Team India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital as he continues to recover from the severe fall he suffered during the third ODI against Australia. Iyer, who took a stunning catch while running backward from point to dismiss Alex Carey, appeared to injure his left rib cage during the effort and was taken to the hospital shortly after returning to the dressing room on Saturday.
WHY WAS IYER RUSHED TO THE ICU?
It has been reliably learnt that Iyerâ€s body vitals dropped to dangerously low levels after the fall, prompting an emergency rush to the hospital in what was a life-threatening situation at that moment. The impact from the fall is believed to have split a body part just below the rib cage, resulting in severe internal bleeding. It is understood that Iyer was not in good condition inside the dressing room and was quickly rushed to the hospital after his blood pressure dropped alarmingly. Those aware of the developments said the situation “could have been touch and go,†but the BCCI medical team and support staff acted swiftly to ensure he received immediate medical care.Iyer is expected to remain in the ICU for at least two more days, though his stay could be extended if the bleeding doesnâ€t subside within the next 48 hours. Should there be no improvement, he is likely to remain under close observation for the coming week. As of now, it is considered certain that he will stay hospitalised for at least seven days.
WHAT IS IYERâ€S INJURY?
According to information accessed by TimesofIndia.com, Iyer may have suffered a splenic rupture, which led to internal bleeding. It is reliably learnt that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is speeding up the formalities to ensure someone from his family can be in Sydney at the earliest. It is not clear at this stage when that will happen.”Arrangements are being made by the BCCI. As of now, it is not clear whether both parents will go, but someone will be with him at the earliest in the hospital,” says a source tracking developments.”As of now, Iyer’s sister was supposed to travel to Australia, and even the paperwork has been initiated, but it could well be the case that one of the parents accompanies her,” adds the source.
WHAT HAS THE BCCI SAID?
In this delicate situation, the BCCI is keeping a close watch on the cricketerâ€s condition and keeping his family updated on every development.”Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” the BCCI said in an official statement.”Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”WHAT IS SPLEEN LACERATION?A ruptured spleen is a serious medical emergency that can lead to dangerous internal bleeding. Because the spleen is highly vascular and fragile, itâ€s one of the most vulnerable organs in the abdomen and can be easily damaged. The spleen, a soft, fist-sized organ in the upper left abdomen, filters and stores about a quarter of the bodyâ€s red blood cells and platelets while producing white blood cells to fight infections. Its delicate structure and thin outer capsule make it highly prone to injury from blunt trauma. A rupture can cause severe internal bleeding and demands immediate medical attention, often requiring surgery. Most splenic ruptures result from traumatic injuries, with car accidents accounting for nearly 50% to 75% of cases. Contact sports such as football and hockey also pose significant risks. In some cases, violent impacts like punches, stabbings, or gunshot wounds can cause the rupture. The spleen may tear immediately upon impact or later due to internal swelling from the injury.
Shreyas Iyer remains under close medical supervision in Sydney but is recovering steadily from the spleen injury he sustained during the third ODI against Australia at the SCG. The 30-year-old India vice-captain has been moved out of intensive care, with the BCCI confirming his condition as “medically stable and recovering well.â€
The incident occurred when Iyer, fielding in the covers, dived to complete a sharp catch off Alex Carey. The impact caused internal bleeding and a laceration to his spleen, as scans later revealed. He was taken from the ground to hospital, where he has remained under the care of team doctor Dr Rizwan Khan and a local specialist team.
BCCI Comments of Shreyas Iyer Injury
A BCCI statement on Monday said:
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25. He is under treatment, medically stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status.â€
Family members are expected to travel from Mumbai once visa formalities are completed. For now, Iyer is likely to remain in Sydney for several more days, with no immediate timeline for his return to cricket. Those close to the situation suggest there will be no haste in bringing him back to action.
Iyer, who has been earmarked primarily for Indiaâ€s ODI squad, faces a race against time to recover before the upcoming home series against South Africa, beginning November 30.
The rest of the Indian side has moved on to Canberra for the opening T20I on October 29.

Indiaâ€s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the ICU in a Sydney hospital after suffering internal bleeding from a rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia. The injury occurred when Iyer took a backward-running catch to dismiss Alex Carey and landed awkwardly, hitting his left rib cage.
According to a BCCI source, Shreyas Iyer has been in the intensive care unit for the past few days after internal bleeding was detected. He was admitted immediately to stop the spread of infection caused by the bleeding. The source added that Iyer would remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days, depending on how quickly he recovers.
The source also confirmed that the BCCI medical team acted swiftly when Iyerâ€s vital signs began fluctuating after he returned to the dressing room. The team doctor and physio took no chances and immediately took him to the hospital.
The source stated, “Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. Heâ€s a tough lad and should be fine soon.â€
Initially, the BCCI expected Iyer to recover in about three weeks, but due to the nature of internal bleeding, the recovery time is now uncertain. “Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, itâ€s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,†the source said.
The 31-year-old is expected to remain in the Sydney hospital for about a week before doctors decide if he is fit to travel back to India.
Shreyas Iyer struggles with fitness once more following a string of injuries and contract loss
Recurrent injuries have caused Shreyas Iyer’s cricket career to be interrupted several times. He was forced to withdraw halfway through the Test series against England due to a back injury. Iyer chose to skip a Ranji Trophy match that the BCCI had ordered him to play in despite the National Cricket Academy (NCA) later clearing him as fit. He lost his central contract as a result of the disagreement with the board over this decision. He then underwent back surgery and took time off from cricket.
However, his back problems resurfaced recently with recurring spasms and stiffness, the same issue he had surgery for during the India A series. To manage his workload, Iyer informed the BCCI that he wanted to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket.
The BCCI confirmed his decision in an official statement, saying, “Mr. Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. Having undergone back surgery in the UK and managed his recovery well, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. In view of his decision, he was not considered for selection for the Irani Cup.â€

Former WWE performer Bobby Horne is struggling with several health issues that have left him residing in an Intensive Care Unit. On Facebook, fellow WWE alum Leilani Kai shared that Horne is currently battling a blood infection and pneumonia at this time.
Iâ€ve known Bobby for many years — all the way back to our WWF days in the mid-â€90s. Weâ€ve worked a lot of shows together since then, and heâ€s always been the same kind-hearted, funny, and dependable person wherever we were — locker rooms, conventions, or long drives on the road.
Heâ€s going through a really tough time right now, battling a blood infection and pneumonia, and remains in the ICU. His wife Denise has been by his side every step of the way and has been sharing updates as he continues to fight and show small signs of improvement.
Please keep Bobby and Denise in your prayers tonight. Heâ€s a good man and a true friend to so many of us in wrestling.
Horne is best known for his time as ‘Mo’ of Men on a Mission, a rapping babyface group that arrived in the early 1990s. In 1994, Mo and Mabel captured the WWF Tag Team Championships during a tour of the UK, though lost the titles days later. In 1995, Mo became ‘Sir Mo’ after Mabel won that year’s King of the Ring tournament.
This current stint in the ICU is sadly not Horne’s first medical issue. In 2018, Horne required a kidney transplant and was told he’d need anti-rejection medication for the rest of his life. 2022 saw Horne struggle with a liver transplant and battle COVID, the latter of which led to him spending time in the ICU.
We here at SEScoops would like to wish Horne the very best at this difficult time.
