The Flyers didn’t play a good game against a top team and the result showed it.

They fell to the Jets, 5-2, Thursday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Owen Tippett drew the Flyers within 2-1 in the middle stanza. But Winnipeg responded just 1:21 minutes later with a goal off a whacky bounce to send the Flyers into second intermission trailing by two.

“I thought Tip was probably our only guy that played well tonight,” head coach Rick Tocchet said. “Then we give them that goal, that was a killer.”

About midway through the third period, Mark Scheifele put the next dagger in the Flyers with his second goal of the night, this one on the power play.

“I think it just comes down to execution,” Tippett said. “I don’t think they did anything special. It just comes down to execution and they buried on their chances and we didn’t.”

Matvei Michkov picked up a late goal before the Jets tacked on an empty-netter.

“We made some mistakes, for sure,” Travis Konecny said. “There was definitely opportunity there. I think they came out flat and so did we. It was not how we wanted to start the game. Regroup, put it aside.”

The Flyers (1-2-1) have dropped three of their first four games.

“It’s the fourth game of the year,” Tocchet said. “I know coaches say it all the time, but we can learn from this.”

The schedule hasn’t been easy. The Flyers have faced the two-time defending champion Panthers twice, a Hurricanes team that has made the playoffs in seven straight seasons and a Jets club that won the Presidents’ Trophy last season.

“It’s a tough stretch,” Tocchet said Tuesday. “You’ve got to play them eventually. We’ve got some quality opponents right away. There’s no easy game in the NHL.

“We go from the Stanley Cup champs to the Presidents’ Trophy champs. It is a tall order, but even in practice today, I see guys want these moments. … We’re looking for big moments from players. But in the meantime, you have to have the small moments to add up to the big ones.”

The Flyers don’t see the Jets (3-1-0) again until April 11 when the clubs meet at Canada Life Centre.

• At morning skate, Tocchet said the Flyers would be in trouble if they committed turnovers against a team like Winnipeg.

The Flyers had a bad one lead directly to a Jets goal in the second period. Nikita Grebenkin couldn’t handle a pretty low-key pass from Travis Sanheim. Winnipeg pounced on the mishap as Scheifele blasted a shot past Samuel Ersson to put the Flyers down 2-0.

It was a critical momentum swing because the Flyers had just come up empty on a power play.

“Winnipeg kind of played kitty by the door and they waited for their chances,” Tocchet said.

The Flyers Postgame Live crew broke down the team’s 5-2 loss Thursday night to the Jets.

• Ersson was not particularly sharp and the Flyers weren’t, either.

The netminder surrendered four goals on 14 shots.

The Jets opened the scoring 5:45 minutes into the action when Vladislav Namestnikov buried a rebound at the doorstep. Before Winnipeg got the puck in deep, it looked like Jett Luchanko had an opportunity to clear the defensive zone, but he was quickly pressured and lost the puck.

“They made a good play, I’ve just got to be able to advance the puck,” Luchanko said. “They were able to pounce on us from there.”

In the second period, the Jets countered that Tippett goal when a shot ricocheted off Adam Ginning’s stick and then clanged off Noah Cates’ backside to make it 3-1. On the NBC Sports Philadelphia broadcast, Ginning could be seen saying “no way” after the puck went into the net.

“Ginning makes a good block and then it takes a bad bounce,” Ersson said. “It’s a little sh–ty goal.”

Connor Hellebuyck, last season’s Hart Trophy winner as the league’s MVP, stopped 15 of the Flyers’ 17 shots.

“They played a perfect road game,” Tocchet said. “Plus, they’ve got Hellebuyck in net.”

The Flyers fell to the Jets, last season’s Presidents’ Trophy winner, with a 5-2 decision Thursday night.

• Michkov recorded his first point of the season with his goal late in the third period. That could be a silver lining for the Flyers, who would love to see him get going offensively.

• Cam York made his season debut after missing the first three games with a lower-body injury.

The 24-year-old played on the top defensive pair alongside Sanheim and finished with 22:32 minutes.

With York’s return, Emil Andrae was sent back to AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley.

The Flyers play their third of four straight home games Saturday when they welcome the Wild (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

It’s WrestleDream week and a three-plus-hour go-home show was on tap to get fans ready for this Saturday night’s PPV event. There are some intriguing matchups as well as some rematches scheduled for this weekend, so let’s see how they did to get viewers ready.

HITS

MOXLEY-DARBY FACE-TO-FACE

This was a great segment. They just sat two guys down in chairs across from each other and had them talk. They had a conversation that did not come across as scripted. Viewers could hear both wrestlers explain their reasons for doing what they’ve been doing for the past few months. This was well constructed and well delivered by both. This is clearly the most anticipated match of the PPV for many fans and Tony Khan should really think about making it the main event.

The sequel to this later in the show was fine and the images of Darby crawling through all the abuse to get to Moxley was well done, but it wasn’t necessary to add any more anticipation in my mind. Needless to say, this is the match that has the most long-term emotional build and should be wild come Saturday night.

JURASSIC EXPRESS AND KENNY OMEGA

Early in the show, Jack Perry gave us a little more clarity, but he was still too vague in his explanation of his motives. If he is going to be a babyface again, he needs to show remorse over what he did in the past. The six-man tag match an hour later did a better job in that regard. The match was not only fun to watch and a hard-hitting affair, but there was a lot of narrative that made it more clear the role that the new Jurassic Express will play.

Perry sacrificed himself for Omega, which was the clear babyface decision I was hoping for as they eventually came out on top and got a much better fan reaction after the match than they did at the start. Omega coming to their aid when The Young Bucks arrived was another step forward for Omega to build some allies, since most of his friends are no longer available to help.

QUICK HITS

– The Toni Storm-Kris Statlander opening interview and short fight was weird, but strangely, it made me anticipate the match on Saturday a little bit more than I did previously, so I suppose that was the purpose of the segment!

– Jamie Hayter vs. Skye Blue was a very good match. Blue has continued to improve every week. Thekla did a great job in her promo setting up her match with Hayter for WrestleDream and it was nice that they didn’t have another beatdown to lead into the PPV. The match and words were all that was needed. I like Thekla and I think she should be built into a title contender sooner rather than later.

– The Claudio Castagnoli vs. Roderick Strong match was a lot of fun and very hard-hitting. It was a nice reminder what a force Claudio can be.

– The Opps vs. LFI match was more solid wrestling, but what stood out was “Hangman” Adam Page and his interaction with Bryan Danielson on commentary. They had some great insight on the World Title match at WrestleDream and the post-match angle did enough to make this another one I’m looking forward to watching on Saturday. I have really liked the build to this despite how quickly they had to pivot to this storyline.

– Once again, the six-man tag match to end the show was good and gave you more Don Callis and Bryan Danielson on commentary and set up the Mark Briscoe vs. Kyle Fletcher TNT Title match for WrestleDream as well as set up the Tag Title match with Brodido vs. Kazuchika Okada & Konsuke Takeshita. All are intriguing matchups that should deliver at the PPV.

MISSES

HURT SYNDICATE/DEMAND OUT OF ORDER?

Why are getting a six-man tornado tag match with The Hurt Syndicate and The Demand at WrestleDream when we just got a street fight between them a week ago? This is an example of a match that certainly could have been left off the PPV, especially since we got another tag match between the two teams on Dynamite It’s just too much and makes it hard to get excited about what’s to come this weekend, even if they made it a tornado tag. I like both teams, but they need to move on from each other. The street fight should have been the blowoff.

TOO MANY MULTI-PERSON MATCHES

That sure was a lot of multi-person matches on a three-hour broadcast. While I understand their need to get as many wrestlers on the show and preview WrestleDream this weekend without any of the main participants taking falls, this could have been better executed. Why not have some singles matches to determine opponents for the PPV matches lower on the card? Why not have a tag match that gives the winner a spot in the show or have a match for a stipulation. There were no stakes in 90 percent of the matches on Dynamite this week and that is a problem that should be fixed immediately.

TNA is currently eyeing a $10 million media deal for a weekly live show and negotiations are still underway. However, it seems WWE is concerned that the new Nielsen ratings might negatively impact the negotiations.

According to Fightful Select, a WWE production source shared concern that the recent Nielsen TV ratings changes could end up being used against TNA during their efforts to secure a new television deal.

However, TNAâ€s Carlos Silva clarified that this issue hasnâ€t come up in their talks so far. He added that the company has an important call scheduled this week to keep progress moving on a potential new deal.

“One WWE production source expressed concern that the new numbers and data from the Nielsen TV ratings changes could be used to negotiate against TNA as they try to land a new television deal.

TNAâ€s Carlos Silva said that such a thing hasnâ€t even been brought up to TNA during negotiations and that they have an important call this week to keep wheels on their possible upcoming deal is going.â€

This comes after Carlos Silva already noted that there have been major discussions in recent months that have helped move things forward when it comes to a TNA television deal.

Despite concerns about how the Nielsen rating changes might affect wrestling shows overall, Carlos Silvaâ€s remarks makes it clear that TNA remains confident in its standing and expects to secure a strong and stable TV deal as it moves toward 2026. So weâ€ll have to see where TNA ends up eventually.

What do you think about WWEâ€s concern over the Nielsen ratings changes? Do you believe this could truly impact TNAâ€s chances at a major television deal, or is the company strong enough to overcome it? Sound off in the comments.

Bobby Lashley, MVP, and Shelton Benjamin head down the ramp to the ring before their match at AEW All Out.

AEW/Lee South

One of the most popular stables in AEW originally started in WWE, and the trio has found a lot success in Tony Khan’s company since reuniting in October 2024 following their WWE departures. The Hurt Business-turned Hurt Syndicate featuring MVP, Bobby Lashley, and Shelton Benjamin have been dominating AEW, and Khan has spoken glowingly about the brains behind the operation, MVP, calling him an outstanding mind in professional wrestling. It’s something MVP called humbling and flattering in a recent interview with Jimmy V3, where he also spoke about being the mind behind getting the Hurt Syndicate in AEW.

“I told Bobby when we were still at WWE, I was the one that said, ‘Let’s not re-sign,’ because Shelton had been released,” MVP explained. “I said, ‘Don’t re-sign. I’m not going to re-sign. Let’s get together, get Shelton and go to AEW.’ It took a little convincing and Bobby came on board and Tony has been gracious enough to let us get the band back together and continue. Because we felt like we had unfinished business. We felt like we had been disbanded too soon, and most fans felt that way, and Tony gave us an opportunity to get the band back together and to continue to contribute and have fun.”

MVP said the proof is there when the fans start singing the Hurt Syndicate’s theme song when they walk out. He said that Khan has been a pleasure to work for and that he, Benjamin, and Lashley are grateful to him.

blankJasprit Bumrah (AP Photo/Altaf Qadri) Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif has stirred debate around Jasprit Bumrahâ€s workload management and role in Indiaâ€s white-ball setup. Sharing his observations from the recent Asia Cup, Kaif pointed out that Bumrah, under Suryakumar Yadavâ€s captaincy, bowled a three-over spell at the start of the innings, rather than being reserved for crucial death overs.

Big Change in Indiaâ€s XI! No Jasprit Bumrah vs Oman?

He noted that while Bumrah now prefers to bowl once his body is warmed up, limiting his presence in the slog overs could hand a significant advantage to stronger opponents in the upcoming World Cup.“Bumrah under Rohit would generally bowl overs 1, 13, 17, 19. Under Surya, in Asia cup, he bowled a three-overs spell at the start. To avoid injury, Bumrah these days, prefers to bowl while his body is warmed up. 1 over of Bumrah in the remaining 14 overs is a huge relief for batters, against stronger teams at World Cup, this could hurt india,†Kaif remarked on X. Despite the concerns, selectors have shown complete faith in the pace spearhead. Jasprit Bumrah was named in Indiaâ€s 15-member squad on Thursday for the two-Test home series against West Indies beginning October 2 in Ahmedabad. Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Bumrah is “rested, fit, and eager to play both Tests†following an extended break after the England tour. The squad also features significant changes. Devdutt Padikkal has replaced Karun Nair, with Agarkar admitting the latter did not make the most of his opportunities in England.Sai Sudharsan, meanwhile, has been backed to secure the No.3 slot after impressing with his consistency. Vice-captaincy duties fall to Ravindra Jadeja in the absence of Rishabh Pant, who is expected to return for the South Africa series in November.Notably, Abhimanyu Easwaran finds himself out of contention despite years of travelling with the squad, while Mohammed Shamiâ€s future remains uncertain amid fitness concerns.Squads:Shubman Gill (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja (VC), Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, N Jagadeesan (WK), Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav.

Tommy Fleetwood is wary of the wounded Americans as Europe bid to defend the Ryder Cup they won emphatically two years ago.

Europe thrashed the United States 16.5-11.5 in Rome in 2023 to bounce back from their own heavy loss in the previous encounter.

Fleetwood was motivated by a desire to atone for Europe’s record 19-9 defeat at Whistling Straits in 2021 and he expects the U.S. attitude to be similar now the boot is on the other foot at Bethpage Black this week.

“I think all of us that were on that team didn’t feel like we did ourselves justice in the way that we played and never really gave ourselves a chance. We were behind from the get-go,” he said.

“I think when you’ve lost one, yes, of course you have a chip on your shoulder. You have that feeling of hurt.

“I think one of the most motivating things you can have is watching the other team celebrate when you’ve lost.

Team Europe star Tommy Fleetwood said the hammering at Whistling Straits motivated him for the next Ryder Cup. David Davies/PA Images via Getty Images

“It came to Rome and I guess it was a very new look of a team –, and a home crowd, home advantage, and we took that.

The Englishman, playing in his fourth Ryder Cup, said: “At Whistling Straits, there’s no other way of putting it, we took a hammering.

“Winning that one was really, really satisfying and of course the American team will have similar sorts of feelings.

“They’ll have been hurt from last time and they’ll come here and want to win and be at home and win in front of their home crowd — and that’s just as it should be.”

Fleetwood played a starring role on his Ryder Cup debut as Europe won in Paris in 2018 and was again outstanding in Rome, where he effectively played the match-winning shot.

The 34-year-old Merseysider is now one of the senior members of the side and boasts great form having won the big-money Tour Championship as he celebrated his first PGA Tour title last month.

Yet in terms of the team, he still considers himself some way below Rory McIlroy — twice a foursomes partner in Rome — in the pecking in order.

Fleetwood said: “Whoever gets to play with Rory this week — what a privilege. What an amazing thing to be able to do, to stand next to him on the golf course and play alongside him.

“He’s one of, if not the, greatest players of our generation.

“I like the energy he has, that he brings to your team, that he brings to the Ryder Cup. I think it’s amazing.

“If I’m one of them that gets a chance to play with him, I would love that opportunity and whatever energy he decides to bring, I’ll be there to support him and be a good partner for him.”

AEW star and leader of The Hurt Business, MVP, has responded to a recent report from Fightful Select, which stated that there have been discussions within the company about adding a new, younger member to the faction. The report sparked speculation among fans about who could potentially join the dominant trio of MVP, Bobby Lashley, and Shelton Benjamin.

The group has been a major force in All Elite Wrestling, and the idea of them adding a new member to their ranks is an intriguing prospect for future storylines. Speaking on the “TMZâ€s Inside The Ring” podcast, MVP addressed the report, confirming that the group has always been open to the idea of expansion, though he downplayed the notion that any definitive discussions have happened recently.

“Of course itâ€s possible. Itâ€s always possible. We have said for a long time thatâ€d weâ€d be interested in adding a fourth member, a younger member, kinda like how Cedric was. I donâ€t know currently what his status currently is.â€

He then revealed that their discussions in the past have not been limited to just adding another male superstar.

“I know somebody reported recently that ‘there are talks about adding a fourth member to the Hurt Syndicate.†News to me. I guess what is misleading about that ‘news†is that weâ€re always interested in potentially adding a new member. In the past, weâ€ve had talks about adding a woman to the group. With professional wrestling, like everything in life, it comes down to timing. Itâ€s all timing. Is it the right person at the right time to what the bigger picture is? There hasnâ€t been any definitive discussion recently where, ‘Okay, letâ€s call a meeting.†Itâ€s always a conversation that weâ€re open to. There are some people that we like, like yeah man, he or she would be pretty cool. It all comes down to timing and thatâ€s life as well as the nature of the business.â€

The Hurt Syndicate lost a trios match at the AEW All Out pay-per-view against the team of Ricochet and The Gates of Agony.
