The deliberately short-handed Knicks wrapped up their preseason slate on a high note, outlasting the Hornets, 113-108, on Friday night at Madison Square Garden.
Here are the takeaways…
— As much as the Knicks wanted their final exhibition game to serve as a proper dress rehearsal with the regular season opener less than a week away, head coach Mike Brown ultimately erred on the side of caution with a few banged-up starters. Before the game, he ruled out Josh Hart(back), Karl-Anthony Towns (quad), and OG Anunoby(ankle) as preventative measures. Mitchell Robinson (load management) was also given the night off.
— The emphasis on quicker ball movement and frequent three-point shooting was apparent from the jump. As the Knicks’ only lineup regulars, Jalen Brunson tallied 15 first-quarter points (12 shots) with two assists and two rebounds across 11 minutes, while Mikal Bridges added five points with four boards in seven minutes. The planned rest for key players pushed Jordan Clarkson into the starting five, and he demonstrated his value as an impact bench scorer by posting eight points with a pair of made threes. Overall, the Knicks shot 39 percent (7 of 18) from beyond the arc in the period.
— Among the bench players competing for a roster spot is Landry Shamet, and the veteran guard showed some shrewd physicality in the second quarter by forcing a couple of Hornets turnovers. He also scored five points in 11 minutes. Tyler Kolek logged the fewest first-half minutes (6) in the 10-man rotation, and before halftime, Brunson produced 20 points (7 of 15 shooting) and appeared to debut a new archery-style hand celebration. Circling back to that stress on three-point shots — the Knicks took 30 through 24 minutes. At the break, they held a 64-54 lead on 47-percent shooting.
— Brunson and Bridges didn’t treat the preseason finale like a practice session. They maintained regular-season rhythms in the third quarter, combining for 12 points to push their game totals to 27 and 14, respectively. There was a brief injury scare for Miles McBride midway through the period, when he landed awkwardly on the baseline after having a runner emphatically rejected. While he got up gingerly with a limp, he stayed in the game and appeared to jog off the discomfort. The Knicks were outscored by seven points in the third, but still held a 90-87 advantage.
— The start of the fourth quarter didn’t mark the end for the Knicks’ pair of stars. Bridges continued to hustle in transition, pulling off a highlight-reel swat that preceded a one-handed slam midway through the period. Brunson, who was subbed out with 3:33 left in the third, checked back in with 7:41 remaining in regulation. Of course, it wasn’t a dress rehearsal for three Knicks starters, but their captain lived up to midseason form with a laudable 31 points in 34 minutes. Bridges also performed at a high level, racking up 16 points with seven rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks across 33 minutes.
— “I thought we did some pretty good things tonight, especially starting two young guys in [Mohamed Diawara] and [Trey Jemison], but we played in spurts too many times,” Brown said. “We just gotta be a little more consistent with what we’re doing. And if we do, we’re gonna have a chance to be pretty good.”
— Brown has set a goal for the Knicks to average 40 threes per game this season, and they met the mark by posting 48 with a success rate of 38 percent. While the team struggled to contain Hornets starters Miles Bridges and Collin Sexton — they combined for 41 points — they still forced 21 turnovers and won the rebounds (44-41), steals (11-9), and paint points (40-34) battles. McBride found a groove off the bench, scoring 15 points with four assists in 24 minutes, while Shamet added six second-half points to finish with 11 over 20 minutes. Clarkson reached 13 points over 23 minutes.

The Charlotte Hornets have waived veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie, the team announced Thursday.
Dinwiddie signed a one-year, $3.6 million deal with the Hornets in early July amid free agency, but Charlotte had to release a guaranteed salary ahead of next week’s regular-season opener and chose his in an effort to get to the maximum of 15 standard contracts on the current roster.

Dinwiddie, who appeared in just two preseason games with Charlotte, averaged 14.3 points and 6.2 assists in 30 games as a starter for the Dallas Mavericks last season. He averaged 11 points, 4.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 27 minutes overall in 79 appearances for the Mavericks in 2024-25.
Now entering his 12th NBA season, Dinwiddie played a key role as the sixth man on the Mavs’ 2022 Western Conference finals team after arriving as part of the Kristaps Porzingis deal at the trade deadline and was sent to the Brooklyn Nets a year later as part of the Kyrie Irving trade.
Dinwiddie has also played for the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Lakers during his career, averaging 13.0 points and 5.1 assists in 27.7 minutes in 621 games (345 starts).

The Wellsboro Junior High Volleyball team split their final two regular season games, falling to Troy on Saturday and sweeping rival North Penn-Liberty Monday.
“Our offense finally got comfortable with their new rotation, and our defense and serving were on point,” head coach Valery Weaver said. “The girls were scrappy and hustled the whole game. We forced extra points in the second set, and came out with the sweep! It was a fantastic way to end the regular season, as NPL is a worthy opponent and well-coached. I’m so proud of the growth of the players this year on A and B teams, and I can say without hesitation, the future of Wellsboro volleyball is bright!”
The young Lady Hornets edged the Lady Mounties 25-23 to win the 1st set and 27-25 to win the 2nd.
Rachel Weaver scored 12 points (4 aces) and made 6 digs and 2 assists to lead Wellsboro. Alexis Dunning scored 7 points (4 aces) to go along with 5 digs, 1 assist and a kill. Nora Mickey scored 6 points (1 ace) and had 6 digs and a kill.
Reese Eckart added 4 digs, Alayna Richards had 3 digs and Lila Morey added a kill.
Against Troy over the weekend Wellsboro lost both sets: 25-10 and 25-21.
Dunning scored 6 points (4 aces) and had 2 kills while Weaver scored 4 points (1 ace) and had 3 assists and 2 digs. Morey scored 3 points (1 ace) and had a kill. Mickey added a kill and Eckart added a dig.
Wellsboro finishes the regular season 9-7. The A team will be back in action Saturday at the Williamson Junior High Tournament.
The Charlotte Hornets want star guard LaMelo Ball to “take a leap in becoming more of a leader” during the 2025-26 NBA season, according to the Charlotte Observer‘s Roderick Boone.
Boone reported that was one idea behind acquiring veteran Collin Sexton, who can almost be a mentor or sorts for Ball even though they’re only two years apart.
Per Boone, head coach Charles Lee has witnessed some encouraging signs already.
“Lee, who had dinner with Ball and president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson earlier in the week to discuss goals, summer impressions, and personal growth, said Ball has registered a couple of personal records in the weight room this summer and was focused on building up his base,” the Hornets insider wrote.
“Lee also said he sees clear growth in Ball on the defensive side, especially on high-effort plays, but emphasizes there’s a need for continued improvement in foul discipline and defensive consistency.”Lee also said he sees clear growth in Ball on the defensive side, especially on high-effort plays, but emphasizes there’s a need for continued improvement in foul discipline and defensive consistency.”
Staying healthy is Ball’s primary objective this season.
The 2020-21 Rookie of the Year has appeared in 60-plus games just once since entering the NBA. Last year, he was limited to 47 appearances before eventually getting shut down altogether in March thanks to ankle and wrist injuries.
With Ball, it’s tough to totally divorce Charlotte’s general futility from his status within the squad. The Hornets have had a winning record just once since picking him in the 2020 draft.
That’s not entirely the fault of the 6’7″ playmaker, but he deserves some blame when his career usage rate (30.2 percent) is on pace to be 12th all time. At some point, his impressive individual production needs to translate into wins.
The trouble for Charlotte is that it could end up being a lottery team once again after not making any big additions this summer. The Hornets are counting on Ball and Brandon Miller to make big leaps on the floor to close the gap on the contenders in the Eastern Conference.
