The Jacksonville Jaguars struggled to get anything going in Sunday’s 35-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in London, but star rookie Travis Hunter finally reached the end zone in a standout performance.

Hunter finished with team highs of eight catches for 101 yards and his first career touchdown on 14 targets in the loss. It was also his first career 100-yard game. He snagged a 34-yard pass from Jags quarterback Trevor Lawrence and took it past the goal line in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout after the Rams took a 28-0 lead.

Jacksonville’s offense had a hard time moving the ball throughout the game after Los Angeles went ahead early and was able to play more aggressively on defense. Still, Hunter did his best to make the most out of his touches.

Hunter didn’t see any defensive snaps until the second half, and he didn’t record any tackles. He managed to make a nice pass breakup while defending Rams star receiver Davante Adams in a one-on-one matchup on a deep pass.

Hunter’s lack of action on defense was somewhat surprising, as he had been used more on that side of the ball in recent games.

The Jags will be on a bye in Week 8 before returning to action on Nov. 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Hunter will surely be looking to build off of Sunday’s impressive performance, so the team will have to use the time off wisely.

VANCOUVER — As the Vancouver Canucks embark on a new season in search of at least 10 more points than they had last year, goalie Thatcher Demko playing 53 games instead of 23 is a pretty good place to start looking.

His year shortened and hollowed by a series of injuries, Demko did not play last season until Game 27 for the Canucks. In December.

On Thursday, he was ready for Game 1. Demko stopped 17 of 18 shots, including a couple of breakaway saves, and kept the Calgary Flames scoreless until the Canucks found their game in the third period and pumped four goals past Dustin Wolf to win 5-1 at Rogers Arena.

After last seasonâ€s chaos for the Canucks and a disappointing 90-point finish that left them out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Game 1 felt like something more than just the first of 82 tests. But it was especially significant for Demko, the 2024 Vezina Trophy runner-up, who spent much of last year trying to solve a knee injury that delayed his start and undermined his performance.

Demko played only 23 times. Thirty more games for him this season would surely be worth at least another five wins.

“Felt pretty good even this morning,†Demko told reporters after the game. “You know, just excited to be here. So yeah, I felt good all day, just kind of waiting around, wanting to get to the rink and get the gear on.

“I think the first game is huge … just kind of keeping the momentum building (from the pre-season). And especially (with) the turnover that we had from last year in our room and our coaching staff, too, it’s a testament to the work that everyone kind of put in in the summer and then through camp. Obviously, 81 left.â€

“Demmer playing always helps,†Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers smiled when asked about the potential for 53 games for their all-star goalkeeper instead of 23. “You know, he’s a world-class goalie, and he always has been since I’ve been here. So for him to be feeling the way he is, it’s really encouraging for our group. He’s incredible. It’s great having him behind us.â€

It was great on Thursday that top centre Elias Pettersson, another player vital to a rebound season in Vancouver, emerged unscathed from a dangerous second-period boarding by Flames defenceman MacKenzie Weegar.

It was great that elegant second-line centre Filip Chytil, who said before training camp that he needed to score more — “not just play nice hockey; nobody cares about that†— cracked open a nervy game by scoring twice in six minutes early in the second period, making it 3-0 on a beautiful breakaway at 8:53 after he partially blocked a shot and then took Arshdeep Bains†pass behind the Calgary defence.

Probably what was greatest for the Canucks is that the team, so harmonious and re-energized after a positive pre-season, overcame a jittery first half without surrendering any goals by eventually just taking the game away from the Flames in the third period.

Jonathan Lekkerimaki, from Evander Kaneâ€s centring pass, and Brock Boeser also zipped pucks past Wolf, last seasonâ€s Calder Trophy finalist, who had to start this season by playing twice in 25 hours.

Canuck Kiefer Sherwood scored the only goal of the first two periods by surprising Wolf with a heavy wrist shot from the right-wing circle that got on top of the goalie in a hurry at 14:53 of the first.

“Yeah, it’s a good feeling,†Myers said. “At the same time, we know there’s a lot more. First game, whether it’s a little bit of nerves or whatever it was, there’s definitely more. But we did a lot of good things, too.â€

“We talked about it; it’s not always going to be perfect,†Pettersson said. “But I think we stuck with it. So, yeah, happy with the win. I mean, I think it builds character (when) we find a way to win even though it wasn’t our best.â€

It was a game with pre-season execution at the start, but it quickly escalated to mid-season intensity with a pair of boarding calls early in the second.

Just 20 seconds into the middle frame, Weegar caught Pettersson off-balance with a shoulder check, launching the most expensive player in Canucks history head-first into the boards.

But in a nearly-identical hit at 4:33, Vancouverâ€s other Elias Pettersson, the second-year defenceman known as “Junior,†catapulted Flame Connor Zary into the boards with a borderline hit.

In both cases, referees Francis Charron and Tom Chmielewski wisely called major boarding penalties initially, which allowed them to review the checks. The punishments to Weegar and Pettersson Junior were downgraded to two-minute minors.

They looked like the correct calls as neither hit was delivered with malice. But the adjudication did little to satisfy either team on the receiving end.

Fortunately, both Zary and the original Pettersson stayed in the game after getting medical attention.

“I’m okay,†Pettersson said. “I saw the replay. I don’t think it’s a dirty hit, just bad timing. I drop (the puck) to Brock, and itâ€s a bad drop, so I reach for the puck, and then he pushed me. I think I took the impact a little bit with my arm, but I landed sideways. I feel a little bit in my neck, but it’s fine.â€

Pettersson expects to play Saturday when the Canucks visit the Edmonton Oilers, still perfect at 1-0 after an imperfect but gritty opener.

The Canucks power play, so cohesive and dangerous through the pre-season, struggled to generate quality chances against the Flames. The first unit was especially untidy. But Vancouverâ€s penalty killing, which led the NHL over the final two-thirds of last season, blanked Calgaryâ€s power play on four chances spanning eight minutes.

During one critical kill in the second period, with the Canucks clinging to their 1-0 lead, Bains blocked a pair of heavy one-timers by Flame Matt Coronato.

“Big boy blocks,†Demko said of Bains, who won a roster spot during the pre-season. “I gave him a pat right when we got in the room here in the second intermission, and I think everyone else did, too. I mean, those are huge blocks, especially at that point. One-goal game, and they’re looking to tie it up on the power play, and he steps up and makes two huge plays for us. He’s a really smart guy, a lot of hockey IQ, and obviously that’s why he’s out there on the PK.â€

The Canucks finished with 19 blocks, 11 more than the Flames. Vancouver was outhit 36-27.

In the Dallas Mavericks’ preseason opener, Cooper Flagg wasted no time showing why he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft.

The 18-year-old rookie out of Duke turned heads in his debut, flashing elite vision, defensive instincts and confidence well beyond his years. Flagg’s highlight reel from the night quickly made the rounds on social media, with fans marveling at his poise and playmaking.

Flagg led all starters — including Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell, Klay Thompson and Dereck Lively II — in scoring at the half, posting 10 points, six rebounds and a block.

Even as the No. 1 overall pick, Flagg couldn’t hide his excitement ahead of Monday’s preseason debut, eager to use it as a springboard into the regular season after a long and productive offseason and training camp.

“Yeah, I’m excited,” Flagg said, per Dallas Hoops Journal Grant Afseth . “It’s obviously preseason, like you said, but it’s another step in the right direction, getting down the road and getting ready for the season. I’m excited to be able to get out there with the guys. We’ve been practicing and playing hard for a while now out here in the summer, so I’m excited to just get on the court and really play somebody else.”

The rookie first took the floor during the 2025 NBA Summer League, where he averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks over two games before being shut down for the remainder of the summer.

Dallas will open its season at home against the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 22.

IND vs PAK Highlights: It's 12-0 now! India thrash Pakistan by 88 runs in Women’s World CupKranti Goud (C) celebrates the wicket of Pakistan’s Aliya Riaz with teammates. (PTI/AP Photo) NEW DELHI: The contrasting knocks of Harleen Deol and Richa Ghosh, backed by disciplined bowling, propelled India to a commanding 88-run victory over Pakistan in a drama-filled ICC Womenâ€s World Cup clash in Colombo on Sunday. Sent in to bat on a slow track, India found stability in Deolâ€s composed 46 off 65 balls and the blitzkrieg of Richa Ghosh, whose 20-ball 35* at the death pushed India to a competitive 247 all out.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Despite a series of early miscues, including a controversial toss in Pakistanâ€s favour and a 15-minute delay due to bugs invading the field, Indiaâ€s bowlers dismantled Pakistanâ€s chase. Kranti Gaud (3/20) spearheaded the effort, tearing through the top order, while spinners Deepti Sharma (3/45) and Shree Charani (2/38) cleaned up the middle and lower order. Sidra Aminâ€s valiant 81 off 106 balls and Natalia Pervaizâ€s 33 offered resistance, but the rest of Pakistanâ€s lineup faltered. With this win, India extended their perfect ODI head-to-head record against Pakistan to 12-0.As it happened: India vs PakistanHarleen Deol anchors India inningsIndiaâ€s batting stumbled on a sluggish surface early on, with opener Smriti Mandhana (23) falling inside the powerplay while Pratika Rawal (31) offered a brisk start. Harleen Deolâ€s steady 46 stitched together partnerships at crucial moments, including a 39-run stand with Harmanpreet Kaur (19) and 45 runs with Jemimah Rodrigues (32). Deolâ€s composed strokeplay anchored India through a tricky middle overs phase, providing the platform for Richa Ghosh to accelerate towards the end.Harmanpreetâ€s dismissal to an inside edge momentarily halted momentum, and Jemimah Rodrigues fell for 32 after an early reprieve on a no-ball. Nevertheless, the experienced pair of Deepti Sharma (25) and Sneh Rana (20) added a 42-run partnership, keeping India competitive before Richa Ghoshâ€s late flurry pushed the team to 247.India v Pakistan

Kranti Gaud dismantles Pakistan top orderPakistanâ€s chase of 248 began in disarray when opener Muneeba Ali (2) was spectacularly run out by Deepti Sharma after momentarily wandering out of the crease. Kranti Gaud then struck twice in quick succession, removing Sadaf Shamas (6) caught and bowled, followed by Aliya Riaz (2), leaving Pakistan reeling at 26/3.The Indian bowling attack maintained relentless pressure, with Gaud exploiting the pitchâ€s pace and bounce, while Deepti Sharma and Shree Charani applied control with clever variations. The disciplined lines and lengths forced Pakistan to play under pressure, denying them rhythm or momentum in the chase.Sidra Amin and Natalia Pervaiz provide fleeting resistanceAfter early blows, Pakistanâ€s middle-order duo of Sidra Amin (81 off 106) and Natalia Pervaiz (33) attempted to stabilise the innings, adding a 69-run stand that briefly threatened to turn the tide. Amin played a composed knock, continuing her form from the recent South Africa series, finding boundaries at intervals and rotating strike well. However, once Gaud and the Indian bowlers broke the partnership, wickets fell at regular intervals. Deepti Sharmaâ€s tight spell ensured Pakistan never recovered, and despite Sidra Aminâ€s lone fight, Pakistan were bowled out for 159 in 43 overs, sealing Indiaâ€s comfortable 88-run victory.IND vs PAK

Post-match reactions: Praise for Kranti, focus on momentumIndia captain Harmanpreet Kaur praised her bowlers and the late contributions with the bat: “Very happy, important win. Our bowling was great, Kranti was outstanding. Richa then gave us 30 crucial runs… we wanted to see how much we got on a slow, holding pitch. Right now, Iâ€m happy we won.â€Kranti Gaud, Player of the Match, said: “Feeling really good that Iâ€m the Player of the Match in a World Cup match. People in my village would be proud.†Pakistan captain Fatima Sana acknowledged her teamâ€s struggles despite Aminâ€s resistance, emphasizing the need for partnerships in future matches.Indiaâ€s win highlighted a balanced performance of patience, aggression, and disciplined bowling, reinforcing their dominance over Pakistan in ODI cricket while keeping tournament momentum firmly in their favour.

The Philadelphia Flyers†preseason “dress rehearsal†game at Xfinity Mobile Arena looked, at times, like a team ready for Opening Night. At others, it looked every bit like a group still wrestling with new systems and the occasional self-inflicted wound.

In the end, the Islanders capitalized on late mistakes and handed Philadelphia a 4–3 loss—a result that matters less than the patterns behind it.

For Rick Tocchet and his staff, this was less about the score and more about the sharp contrasts on display: moments of speed and promise counterbalanced by costly breakdowns that NHL teams will never forgive.

The decisive sequence that led to the Islanders’ game-winning goal encapsulated the problem. What should have been a manageable defensive read spiraled into a freebie for New York.

“Thereâ€s a couple of mistakes,†Tocchet explained postgame. “First of all, [Matvei Michkov] has to get out there and he got beat up the ice. He was ahead of the guys. I think [Adam Ginning]—heâ€s either got to go or he has to back off. He was caught in between. Heâ€s just buying time, just stay in the middle of the ice, let the guys back there.â€

This, for Tocchet, wasnâ€t about punishing individuals but stressing principles. The Flyers†new system will take time to master, but these lapses—players caught in between, failing to sort assignments—are the kind of breakdowns that giftwrap goals.

“Itâ€s a new system,†Tocchet said. “Weâ€ve gotta go through these things. But if you communicate that stuff…yeah, that has to be better…Thereâ€s just freebies. You might get about three freebies a month; you canâ€t give them two or three in a game. It just canâ€t happen. You canâ€t give free goals in this league.â€

Egor Zamula, too, earned a pointed critique after a night in which he failed to distinguish himself. “Yeah,†Tocchet admitted bluntly. “Heâ€s got to pick it up. Definitely.â€

Thatâ€s preseason in a nutshell: mistakes become teaching tools, but theyâ€re also data points when roster spots hang in the balance.

On the brighter side, Nikita Grebenkin continued to make himself impossible to ignore. The 21-year-old winger didnâ€t just look fast—he looked fearless, attacking gaps and creating chances through sheer tenacity.

“Heâ€s a sticky guy,†Tocchet said postgame. “He comes up with loose pucks. You always need those corner guys that come up with pucks, and we can continue to teach them to play that way—grab pucks, a whole lot of pucks. In the first [period], he had that burst of speed and split the D—thatâ€s good stuff. We want that from them.â€

In a camp that has seen several young players fade in and out of relevance, Grebenkin has been consistently noticeable, consistently disruptive, and consistently effective. His game screams “NHL-ready,†even if the Flyers werenâ€t expecting it.

For Owen Tippett, last seasonâ€s frustration wasnâ€t about production—it was about never finding a true home on a line. He was shuffled often, always the useful part but rarely the centerpiece, and it showed in his inconsistency. If tonight was any indication, that narrative may be shifting.

The line of Tippett, Trevor Zegras, and Michkov flashed serious potential. Their skillsets donâ€t just complement each other—they stretch defenses in ways that few Flyers trios have in recent years. Tippettâ€s straight-line explosiveness, Zegras†flair and playmaking, and Michkovâ€s uncanny ability to create offense out of slivers of space give the unit a balance of speed, creativity, and finishing touch.

Itâ€s early, and chemistry canâ€t be declared off of one night. But if this line clicks, it solves two problems at once: it gives Tippett the stability heâ€s been craving and provides Michkov with linemates who can keep up with his vision.

Between the pipes, Sam Ersson played the full 60 minutes in his final tune-up before the regular season. The 25-year-old wasnâ€t flawless, but he was steady, tracking pucks through traffic and making a handful of highlight stops to keep the Flyers alive.

“There were some point shots, there were a couple of double screens in front, and he made some good saves, a couple of gloves there. I donâ€t know how he saw that,†Tocchet said. “I thought he was solid. He definitely wasnâ€t the reason why we lost the game.â€

Ersson himself echoed the confidence. “[I feel] pretty good,†he said. “I think we can get better and better. Thereâ€s obviously always going to be small situations in a game, but overall…everything is in a good spot. I liked my game today.â€

The Flyers†goaltending picture remains a work in progress, but Erssonâ€s performance reassured both staff and fans that the crease is in capable hands.

Christian Dvorak isnâ€t the flashiest forward in orange and black, but nights like this underline his value. His backhand setup for Travis Sanheimâ€s opening goal was a thing of vision and touch, threading the needle in traffic.

Beyond the highlight, he was engaged, reliable, and quietly effective in both ends.

“I feel pretty good,†Dvorak said. “I think Iâ€ve had a good start so far. I had some good chances that Iâ€d like to bury. Just gotta keep working on that in practice and get better at it.â€

For a team in flux, players like Dvorak are invaluable—not just for the points they produce, but for the stability they bring to a lineup that leans young.

The Flyers†4–3 loss to the Islanders was the kind of preseason game coaches circle in red ink.

It revealed flaws that need cleaning up—poor reads, gaps in execution, lapses in focus. But it also revealed a few pieces of genuine promise: Grebenkinâ€s spark, Erssonâ€s calm, and a line combination that could unlock Tippett in ways we havenâ€t seen before.

Tocchet is right—mistakes are inevitable when implementing a new system. The key is whether they shrink in frequency as the real season begins. The Flyers donâ€t need perfection yet. What they need is direction, and for all the bumps, there were enough signs tonight to suggest theyâ€re moving the right way.
