LAS VEGAS — Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone is considered week-to-week with a wrist injury, coach Bruce Cassidy said Monday.

Stone, a right wing, was injured in the third period of the Golden Knights’ 6-1 win over Calgary on Saturday. He has 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) this season, two points behind teammate and NHL leader Jack Eichel, who has 15 points.

“I feel for him,” Cassidy said. “He’s always bounced back well, that’s the good news. When we do get him back, whether that’s the short, medium, or long term — we don’t know yet.”

Brandon Saad will shift to the top line in place of Stone, joining Eichel and Ivan Barbashev, who will move to right wing.

Eight of Stone’s points have come on Vegas’ power play, which ranks second in the league.

Mitch Marner will step in for Stone at the goal line on the power play, while defenseman Shea Theodore will move to the top unit.

The Knights (4-0-2) head into their toughest test of the young season, at home against the undefeated Carolina Hurricanes (5-0-0), short-handed with their forward lines and at the blue line.

Stone joins forward Brett Howden and defenseman Noah Hanifin, who are both out.

Howden, sidelined with a lower-body injury, has resumed skating but won’t be available against the Hurricanes. Hanifin hasn’t resumed skating since Vegas’ 6-5 shootout loss to Los Angeles in the season opener on due to an undisclosed injury.

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi finished with a hat trick on the final day of MLS’ regular season Saturday to clinch the 2025 MLS Golden Boot award.

Messi’s three goals, along with an assist, helped Miami to a 5-2 win at Nashville SC. The Argentina forward had 29 goals in just 28 regular-season matches to finish as MLS’ top scorer for the first time.

His nearest challengers were LAFC’s Denis Bouanga and Nashville SC’s Sam Surridge, who both finished tied for second with 24 goals.

Only three players — Carlos Vela (34), Josef Martínez (31) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (30) — have scored more goals in an MLS regular season than Messi’s 29.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also had a league-high 19 assists, which, along with his 29 goals, left Messi one shy of Vela’s MLS record of 49 goal contributions in a regular season.

“It’s so obvious that [Messi] gives us an advantage every night,” Inter Miami defender Ian Fray said. “There aren’t enough words to say about him.”

Messi’s contributions propelled Inter Miami to third place in the Eastern Conference, securing home-field advantage for the playoffs. The team will face Nashville again in the first round of the 2025 MLS playoffs.

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano shared in his postgame news conference that Game 1 of the three-game series will take place Friday, though MLS will announce the schedule Sunday.

Mascherano has insisted that Messi has done more than enough on the field to earn the 2025 MLS MVP award, which would make him the first player to win it in consecutive seasons.

“Well, what can I say about Leo? The truth is, well, today he was exceptional, as he usually is,” Mascherano said.

“Clearly, I think if anyone had any doubts about what his regular season was like, the reality is that he’s cleared any doubts. They’ll surely give him the MVP award for everything he’s shown.

“Talking about the three goals he scored, well, happy for him because he helped us win the game again.”

Messi won the 2024 MLS MVP trophy after recording 20 goals and 16 assists to inspire Inter Miami to the Supporters’ Shield and break the league record for most points recorded in a season.

Messi’s hat trick Saturday was second in MLS. His first came in Inter Miami’s 6-2 win over the New England Revolution on the final day of the 2024 regular season.

He scored his first of the game against Nashville from the top of the box in the 35th minute to give Inter Miami a 1-0 lead.

Messi was awarded a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and converted to tie the score 2-2.

He completed the hat trick in the 81st minute, scoring from the center of the box on a left-footed shot and extending Inter Miami’s lead to 4-2.

Messi also had an assist on Telasco Segovia‘s score in stoppage time.

During an appearance on Saturday’s edition of “After Hours” with Scott Oake and Gary Lawless on Hockey Night in Canada, the longtime Leafs star and current Golden Knight shared his thought process during the biggest decision of his professional career.

“There were a couple sleepless nights,” he said after scoring his first two goals with Vegas in a win over the Calgary Flames. “Super tough. It was not an easy decision at all … Tried to make the best move that we thought was going to best for our family going forward.”

Marner, who grew up just outside Toronto, spent his first nine seasons with the Leafs filling up the score sheet every night. He set a career high last season with 102 points, and eclipsed 90 points three other times.

But while the point production was there in the regular season — he had 741 points in 657 games — he failed to replicate his stat-sheet success in the playoffs. In 70 post-season games, the winger notched 63 points and failed to register a goal in two first-round exits.

The Maple Leafs’ struggles in the post-season have been well documented over the Core Four era, advancing to the second round just twice. Marner, being a homegrown superstar, shouldered much of the blame for the team’s struggles.

Now in Vegas, Marner is ready for a fresh start and has embraced the challenges that come with changing teams for the first time in his NHL career.

“The guys in this locker room have been awesome,” the 28-year-old told Scott Oake. “Starting to really feel at home here in the last couple days and week really. I’m liking how it’s going, and just got to keep growing. I’m starting to really open up and just do my part as well.”

If eight points through six games and six over the last three is any indication, Marner is nice and cozy in his new home.

Mitch Marner loves to “hear the love and the loudness” inside T-Mobile Arena, his new home arena with the Golden Knights.

Saturday he helped fuel the energy for an announced crowd of 17,811 by scoring his first two goals as a Knight, while Vegas cruised to a 6-1 win over the Calgary Flames.

Vegas (4-0-2) extended its season-opening point streak to six games.

Team captain Mark Stone finished with two goals and two assists, while Jack Eichel had four assists.

Tomas Hertl and Ivan Barbashev also scored for the Knights.

Adin Hill earned his first win of the season after stopping 26 shots, as he made his first start since exiting the game in Calgary on Tuesday.

“I felt in control the whole night,” Hill said. “They kept kind of looking for backdoor plays on the power play. And I was just trying to kind of stay in my net and keep my feet under me and do everything I came to be in position.”

And while the Flames finished 1 of 3 on the power play, Vegas was a perfect 3 of 3 with the man advantage.

The Golden Knights rank second in the NHL with their power play percentage (37.5%).

“It’s pretty fun,” Marner said of the power play. “So many different threats out there that make plays. For me, it’s just trying to find open ice for Jack to make his play. … They’ve done a great job down low, really making teams play in different areas there. It’s been a lot of fun to watch.”

Marner opened the scoring just 46 seconds into the game, bringing the home crowd to life immediately. But it was the 28-year-old forward’s crafty stick work that sent the crowd into a frenzy near the end of the second period.

Marner extended Vegas’ lead to four goals when he gathered a pass from Stone during a power play, skated to the front of the crease and used a forehand-backhand deke to beat Calgary netminder Dustin Wolf

Marner now has eight points on the year, after assisting on six goals in the first five games.

Eichel, who extended his season-opening point streak to six games after finishing with four assists, owns the franchise record for the most points through the club’s first six games of the season. His 15 points lead the league, while his five multi-point games are the most by any skater this season.

Stone is second in the league with 13 points, including an NHL-high 11 assists. Eichel is just behind him with 10 helpers.

Stone left the game in the third period after falling to the ice near the neutral zone, and immediately went to the locker room. Television replays showed him rotating his wrist. Cassidy said there were no immediate updates and he would know more by Monday’s morning skate ahead of Vegas’ game against Carolina.

Hertl, who scored his third goal of the season, played in the 797th game of his career. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Hertl will play in his 800th career game on Oct. 26 in Tampa, on the second of a back-to-back after visiting two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida.

Head coach Javier Mascherano confirmed Lionel Messi will be available for Inter Miami’s final 2025 MLS regular season clash with Nashville SC on Saturday as the captain looks to secure the Golden Boot.

Messi comes into the match after featuring for Argentina on Tuesday night against Puerto Rico at Chase Stadium.

“Yesterday they [Messi and Rodrigo De Paul] trained with us, they did a good part of it. Today they will train with us completely,” Mascherano said.

“Beyond playing on Tuesday, Messi played for us on Saturday and De Paul didn’t play too many minutes against Venezuela so this wasn’t an international window of too much wear.

“They played here so after the game they could rest, they didn’t travel. Normally, when you have four days between games you can arrive with rest and in good conditions. We will be talking today after training.”

Mascherano said “almost everyone is available” for Saturday’s game except David Ruiz and Allen Obando, who remain sidelined due to ongoing injuries.

The final match against Nashville could see Messi clinch the 2025 MLS Golden Boot and allow Inter Miami to ensure home-field advantage for the playoffs.

Messi leads the Golden Boot standings with 26 goals, though Los Angeles FC forward Denis Bouanga trails on 24 goals.

The Inter Miami captain has yet to win the league’s Golden Boot since joining MLS in the summer of 2023, despite coming close to clinching the accolade in 2024.

Beyond goals, Messi also stands as the leader of assists for the 2025 MLS season with 18 which improves his chances at securing the league MVP.

Mascherano insists there is “no type of doubt” that Messi deserves the trophy, which would make him the first ever player to win the MLS MVP on two consecutive occasions after lifting the 2024 edition of the award.

– Are Man United too big to fail? The answer might surprise you

“There is no type of doubt [that Messi is the MVP of the league]. Even with the disadvantage of playing less games than others, it’s the influence he’s had on this team,” Mascherano said.

“Measuring Messi only on the statistics, which you can do, he’s the best but he goes beyond the numbers. He reflects on the field the importance he has in this team, and what he does to make everyone who watches him enjoy it.”

Inter Miami previously qualified to the league playoffs, but will know of the Round One opponent following the final day of the regular season on Saturday night.

LOS ANGELES — Cal State LA’s women’s volleyball team came up short Friday night in a first-place showdown between California Collegiate Athletic Association unbeatens.

The Golden Eagles dropped the first two sets and saw a spirited comeback come up short in a 25-16, 25-12, 24-26, 25-20 loss to Cal Poly Pomona in the CCAA Game of the Week in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-4, 8-1 CCAA) had a nine-match winning streak snapped, while Cal Poly Pomona (11-4, 9-0 CCAA) won its ninth straight match with the four-set win.

Neither team had lost since Cal State LA beat Cal Poly Pomona in a five-set match in the finale of the Cal State LA Invitational last match. The Broncos, with their win on Friday, still haven’t lost since then.

The Golden Eagles now trail the Broncos by one game as the conference hits the halfway point of the season. The teams will not meet again during the regular season.

Samarah DaCoud had 19 kills and six digs and hit .326 for the Golden Eagles, while Ayjah Landers had eight kills, three blocks and seven digs.

Sarah Ybarra led Cal Poly Pomona with 21 kills and five blocks, while Elle Walker had 13 kills and Charlotte Koerber had 10 kills and 19 digs.

Madison Clark had a team-high five blocks, while Arielle Chandler had 15 set assists and six digs.

Cal Poly Pomona had a 61-40 advantage in kills and a 13-9 edge in blocks. The Broncos outhit the Golden Eagles, .333-.125. The Golden Eagles had five service aces – two by Jameson Sanders – and nine errors, while the Broncos had six aces and 10 errors.

The Golden Eagles started slowly and dropped the first two sets before storming back and making things very interesting. Cal State LA faced an early 5-2 deficit in the third turning things around. The Golden Eagles took a 17-12 lead after a kill and ace by DaCoud, but then had to battle late to stay in the match. Cal Poly Pomona tied it at 20-20 before a kill by Zuhal Cetin, a block by DaCoud and Rachel Lowe and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 23-20 lead. The Broncos tied it at 23-23 and 24-24 before a block by Clark and DaCoud and a kill by Landers pushed the match to a fourth set.

Cal State LA fell into a 12-7 deficit before a service error, an attack error, back-to-back aces from Sanders and a block by Landers and Lowe evened the set. The set was tied for a final time at 18-18, but back-to-back kills by Ybarra gave the Broncos a 20-18 lead and, after Cal State LA got as close as 21-20, the Broncos scored the final four points to close out the match.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home match against San Francisco State on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Goaltender Carter Hart has agreed to sign with the Vegas Golden Knights, becoming the first of the five 2018 Canada world junior hockey players to land an NHL contract since they were acquitted of sexual assault in a high-profile case.

Vegas announced an agreement with undisclosed terms for Hart on Thursday, the second day after the window opened for the players to sign.

Hart and the others are not eligible to play in games until Dec. 1 as part of the leagueâ€s reinstatement process for him, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton.

“The Golden Knights are aligned with the process and assessment the NHL and NHLPA made in their decision,†the team said in a statement. “We remain committed to the core values that have defined our organization from its inception and expect that our players will continue to meet these standards moving forward.â€

McLeod, who was also found not guilty of an additional charge of being a party to the offense, signed a three-year contract in the Russia-based KHL. Formenton is playing in Switzerland, though it is unclear if he has an out clause to return to the NHL, which he has not played in since 2022 with Ottawa.

“Each team is going to have to make its own decision,†Commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday after the NHLâ€s Board of Governors meeting in New York. “They know the rules. And itâ€s up to them to decide whether or not, subject to those rules, they want to move forward.â€

Hart is resuming his career at the age of 27 with the Golden Knights after spending his first six seasons playing for Philadelphia. The Flyers last month ruled out bringing back Hart, whose camp communicated to general manager Daniel Briere that a fresh start was a better option.

The players were charged in 2024 in connection with an incident in London, Ontario, in 2018. The judge overseeing the trial said the prosecution could not meet the onus of proof to convict them and that complainantâ€s allegations lacked the credibility needed to justify the charges.

The league conducted its own investigation beginning in the spring of 2022 when the allegations came to light. When announcing the reinstatement timeline in September, the NHL called the events that transpired “deeply troubling and unacceptable†and that while they were not found to be criminal, said the players†conduct did not meet the standard of moral integrity.

The NHLPA at the time said the players cooperated with every investigation and considers the matter closed.

Goaltender Carter Hart is joining the Vegas Golden Knights organization, making his return to the NHL after he was among the five Canadian hockey players found not guilty of sexual assault charges this summer.

The Golden Knights announced Hart’s addition Thursday, noting in a statement that the goalie had been reinstated by the NHL and NHL Players’ Association.

“The Golden Knights are aligned with the process and assessment the NHL and NHLPA made in their decision,” the team said. “We remain committed to the core values that have defined our organization from its inception and expect that our players will continue to meet these standards moving forward.”

Sources said Hart, 27, is on a paid tryout that is expected to be converted to an NHL contract. If Vegas signs Hart, he will be eligible to begin playing in the NHL on Dec. 1.

Hart was one of five players on Canada’s 2018 under-20 world junior team who was found not guilty of sexual assault charges in July. The trial in London, Ontario, stemmed from an alleged assault that took place after the 2018 Hockey Canada Foundation Gala. The players were criminally charged in 2024.

The players were on trial for assaulting a woman, known as EM, in a hotel room after she agreed to have consensual sex with McLeod. In her ruling after an eight-week trial, Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia said prosecutors did not meet the onus on any of the counts, and that she did not find EM’s evidence “credible or reliable.”

At the time, Hart was the starting goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers. He took an indefinite leave of absence shortly before the charges were announced, and the Flyers said last month that Hart would not be rejoining the team. Unlike other players involved in the case, Hart chose not to play professionally overseas and instead trained in Nashville.

Sources said Hart will report to Vegas, where he can begin training with the team, according to conditions set by the NHL and NHLPA. He is expected to then go to Henderson, Nevada, and get some game action beginning Nov. 15 with the Golden Knights’ minor league affiliate.

Several teams, including the Carolina Hurricanes, had explored the possibility of signing Hart, sources said.

In March, Vegas signed starting goaltender Adin Hill to a six-year extension. The team also has 25-year-old Akira Schmid under contract for this season.

Hart was a second-round pick by Philadelphia in the 2016 draft. He has played in 227 career NHL games, recording a 2.94 goals-against average and .906 save percentage.

The other four players in the Team Canada case — Dillon Dubé, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton and Michael McLeod — are not expected to join NHL teams in the immediate future, sources said. The Ottawa Senators hold Formenton’s rights but are not expected to sign him, although other teams have explored trading for his rights. McLeod signed a three-year deal earlier this month to play in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League.
