NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Shea Theodore had a goal and an assist, Akira Schmidgot a shutout against his former team, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the New Jersey Devils3-0 on Friday night.

Tomas Hertl and Ivan Barbashev also scored and Jack Eichel had two assists for Vegas, which has won three straight after a four-game skid (0-2-2). Schmid, who spent three seasons with New Jersey before being traded to Vegas on June 29, 2024, finished with 24 saves to get his third career shutout — second this season.

Jacob Markstrom had 24 saves for the Devils, who were shut out for the second straight game and finished a winless four-game homestand (0-4-0). New Jersey lost 3-0 to Dallas on Wednesday night.

The Devils shuffled all four lines and got off to a slow start as they were outshot 13-5 in the first period.

Theodore got the Golden Knights on the scoreboard with 13 seconds left in the opening period, scoring from the right circle after a pass from Eichel.

New Jersey then outshot Vegas 11-7 in a scoreless second period.

There were no penalties until Vegas†Brandon Saad was sent off for tripping at 2:16 of the third period. The Devils had only one shot on goal during the advantage.

New Jersey got another power play nearly 10 minutes later when Noah Hanifin was called for delay of game for sending the puck over the glass, but the Devils were held without a shot on goal.

The Golden Knights got their first power play 5 seconds after their penalty expired as New Jerseyâ€s Nico Hischier was whistled for hooking. Hertl took advantage as he tipped Mitch Marnerâ€s one-timer past Markstrom with 4:26 remaining for his team-leading 12th of the season.

With Hischier in the penalty box again, Barbashev scored on the rebound of Eichelâ€s shot from center point that hit the left post with 1:24 left.

The New Jersey Devils face the Vegas Golden Knights tonight, marking a reunion for winger Paul Cotter. Cotter was traded to the Devils in June 2024 from the Golden Knights. His fit with the Devils and the impact of the trade on both teams merit analysis.

On June 29, 2024, Cotter and a 2025 third-round pick moved from Vegas to New Jersey in exchange for Alexander Holtz and Akira Schmid.

Cotter was drafted in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL Draft by the Golden Knights.

He played three seasons with the team, recording 138 games, 22 goals, and 23 assists.

With the Devils, Cotter has played 106 games, totaling 18 goals and 10 assists.

Last season, Cotter blended in well with the Devils team. He scored a career-high 16 goals and recorded 22 points in 79 games. He also threw a career-high 245 hits, which is now a Devils franchise record.

This season, Cotter struggled early on, but so has the entire Devils lineup. The team has lost three straight games, and according to head coach Sheldon Keefe, they “were essentially lifeless†in Wednesdayâ€s loss.

For the Golden Knights, Holtz hasnâ€t panned out the way the team had hoped. This season, in eight games, he has recorded zero points. Last season in 53 games, he recorded 12 points–not quite what the Golden Knights were expecting from the 23-year-old left winger.

Schmid, on the other hand, has performed well this season. Although he played only 5 games last season, he has already started 15 this season.

The goaltender has a .896 save percentage and a 9-2 record.

Entering tonight’s matchup, the Golden Knights are 12-6-8 with 32 points. The Devils are 16-10-1 with 33 points. Both teams are closely matched in points.

The trade benefited both sides, as Cotter has found a fit with the Devils and Schmid with the Golden Knights.

The puck will drop at 7 PM tonight as both teams look to add another win to their record.

Fuller & Scotlandâ€s Carson also reached the quarters, missing out 3-2 (11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9) to Hans Geyskens & Christine Jonckheere of Belgium.

In Class 2, Loble & Norris reached the quarter-finals, where they were defeated in three by eventual champions Frank Hahn & Birgitte Joergensen of Germany and Denmark respectively. Tearse, playing alongside Kenneth Booth of Scotland went out in the group stage.

In the Womenâ€s Doubles Class 2, Norris & Tearse won one group match out of three – one of their defeats was to Joy Paul & Lynn Arnot of Scotland, who went on to win bronze.

In the Menâ€s Doubles Class 1, Barlow-Pye teamed up with Steven Morley of Scotland, going out in the group stage, though one of their three defeats was in the fifth. Wallis & Yasuhiko Fuke of Japan won one match out of three, which was not enough to progress to the knockouts.

In Class 2, Lawrence played alongside Herve Morel of France and Loble was with Scotlandâ€s Booth. Both pairs exited in the group stage with one win out of three.

LAS VEGAS — The Golden Knights‘ locker room had a bit more zest after Tuesday’s 4-3 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Moments after Shea Theodore used his trademark forehand-to-backhand move for the game-winner in the shootout, a sudden roar could be heard from behind closed doors in the hallway outside Vegas’ locker room, and it was quite apparent why.

After a brilliant six-save overtime, goaltender Carter Hart stopped two of the three shots he faced in the shootout and picked up his first win as a Golden Knight, in his first game back in the NHL.

“I think for him, obviously, this was a unique situation, we can all agree with that,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “And a new member of our team, it was like (goaltender) Carl’s (Lindbom). It was a big celebration the other night when Carl got his first win, right? So, different thing, but it’s more than one, let’s put it that way.”

The Golden Knights snapped a seven-game losing skid in overtime, grabbing a much-needed win before their longest road trip to date, an upcoming five-game jaunt to New Jersey, Manhattan, Long Island, Philadelphia and Columbus.

Ivan Barbashev, Ben Hutton and Braeden Bowman scored for the Golden Knights in regulation, while Hart made 27 saves.

Oliver Moore, Tyler Bertuzzi and Connor Bedard notched Chicago’s regulation goals and netminder Spencer Knight stopped 25 shots.

KEY MOMENT: Bowman’s goal with 2:28 left in the game tied the game and breathed new life into the Knights and an always energetic crowd inside T-Mobile. After Theodore’s shot went off Knight’s right pad, Bowman’s initial backhand was also stuffed. But his quick reaction to follow with another backhand to ricochet the puck off the top of Knight’s pad and into the net, sending the announced crowd of 17,944 into a frenzy.

KEY STAT: 5-for-5 … Vegas’ penalty kill was outstanding, stopping Chicago on all five power-play attempts. Whether it was limiting the Blackhawks’ top options – Bedard to Bertuzzi backdoor was off the table – or Hart making several big saves, the Golden Knights’ perfect night on the penalty kill was a difference maker.

WHAT A KNIGHT: It has to be Hart. After stopping 21 of the 24 shots he faced in regulation, the 27-year-old was brilliant in overtime, seemingly catching his second win in the nick of time to keep the Blackhawks out of his net. Hart stopped all six shots he faced in overtime, and then two of the three in the shootout (not even Martin Brodeur was stopping Bedard’s shootout attempt). Though the first goal he allowed in regulation was Chicago’s second shot, Hart settled in nicely to keep the Knights in the game.

“I think, first one maybe just, was a little bit excited and maybe over committed on the first guy coming into the zone,” Hart said. “But, I mean, it happens, and it’s just good to be back playing. It’s a process. It’s gonna get better and better each time.

“After that (first goal), just kind of settled in a little bit, and just got back to playing my game, and the guys did a really good job of battling around the net front, tying up sticks, and got some huge blocks in the game. And it’s a big two points.”

LAS VEGAS — Pavel Dorofeyev and Shea Theodore scored in a shootout Tuesday night to make Golden Knights goalie Carter Hartâ€s anticipated debut a success, giving Vegas a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Golden Knights entered 1-8 in games decided after regulation.

Braeden Bowman forced overtime for the Golden Knights when he put in his own rebound with 2:28 left in the third period.

Bowman and Ivan Barbashev each had a goal and an assist. Ben Hutton also scored and Theodore had two assists. Hart stopped 27 shots, including six in overtime.

Tyler Bertuzzi had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks, and Connor Bedard and Oliver Moore also scored. Spencer Knight made 25 saves.

This was Hart’s first NHL appearance in nearly two years, since he played for Philadelphia. He and four other 2018 Canada world junior hockey players were acquitted of sexual assault in July.

The NHL cleared the way for clubs to sign any of the five players, which the Golden Knights did Oct. 24 when they inked Hart to a two-year, $4 million contract.

Hart’s first start Tuesday came before a supportive crowd.

He gave up a goal on the second shot he saw, a drive from Moore above the right circle. In the second period, Hart left his crease to try to clear the puck but instead sent the pass right to Bertuzzi, who scored. Bedard beat Hart with a pinpoint shot from the right circle for a 3-2 lead early in the third.

But Hart was especially good in overtime and then stopped three of four attempts in the shootout. He and his new teammates smiled broadly in the hug line, with Hart receiving a long embrace from Jack Eichel.

LAS VEGAS — Goalie Carter Hart, one of five 2018 Canada world junior hockey players acquitted of sexual assault in July, made his first NHL appearance in nearly two years Tuesday night and received an enthusiastic reaction from Golden Knights fans during pregame introductions.

Hart certainly received the loudest response before Vegas’ home game against Chicago, and if there were any boos, they were difficult to hear.

Some fans also held signs supportive of Hart.

Hart was the first of those five players to agree to an NHL contract. The league ruled those players were eligible to sign deals beginning Oct. 15 and to play starting Dec. 1. Hart signed a two-year, $4 million contract and has been working with the club’s American Hockey League affiliate in Henderson, Nevada.

After he agreed to sign, Hart read a statement to reporters that, in part, said he wanted “to show the community my true character and who I am and what I’m about.”

Hart was asked Monday what steps he has taken to fulfill that pledge.

“There’s been a few things we’ve talked about,” Hart said. “We did a thing there in Henderson helping out the homeless. There’s some things we’ve talked about throughout the season. Whatever I can do to help, I’m happy to help.”

Giving Hart his first start at home could help ease him into what could be a rocky reception around the league. After facing the Blackhawks, Vegas goes on a five-game trip against Eastern Conference teams, including a Dec. 11 stop at Hart’s former Philadelphia team.

He worked in Henderson on getting back into NHL game shape. Hart appeared in three games and went 1-2.

“I’ve worked my [butt] off to get back to this point,” Hart said. “For me, the key is preparation and I’ve done everything I can to be prepared.”

It was a tough start against the Blackhawks. Less than a minute after the Golden Knights scored on their first shot on goal, Chicago’s Oliver Moore found the back of the net the first time Hart was tested.

The 27-year-old last played in an NHL game Jan. 20, 2024, for Philadelphia. Hart played six seasons for the Flyers, going 96-93-29 with a .906 save percentage and 2.94 goals-against average.

“The purpose of Henderson was to get him back into live reps,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He can practice with us with NHL shooters, but traffic around the net, screens, all that stuff is sometimes hard to replicate, especially when you haven’t played that often. We’re less worried about the results, more getting reps, getting used to that stuff.”

The Golden Knights could use the help in net, especially with starting goalie Adin Hill on injured reserve because of a lower-body injury and his return possibly weeks away. Akira Schmid has received the majority of the work with Hill out and is 9-2-4 with a .896 save percentage and 2.51 GAA.

Vegas had lost four straight games before defeating San Jose 4-3 on Saturday night.

Cassidy said the upcoming schedule works in the Golden Knights’ favor in terms of not overloading the goalies.

“Akira’s played well, too, so we have to keep mindful he has to stay sharp,” Cassidy said. “So I’m sure you’ll see a lot of both goalies, but Carter’s waited a long time to play, so he’s definitely going to get his share of starts.”

The Chicago Blackhawks have hit the road for a hand full of games after a long stretch at home. Despite just recently snapping a five game losing streak, they are still right there on the playoff bubble at 11-9-5.

The first game of this road trip is against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena. This is the first time that the two clubs are matching up this season.

Scouting Vegas

The Vegas Golden Knights have one of the best rosters in the NHL. They have superstars everywhere. Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, Pavel Dorofeyev, Tomas Hertl, and newly signed Mitch Marner lead the way offensively for them. On defense, Noah Hanifin and Shea Theodore lead a strong group on the back end.

Despite having this loaded group, they are 11-6-8. Having most of their losses in overtime has kept them afloat in the Western Conference playoff chase but they are not playing like the dominant team that most expected coming into the year.

Their goaltending has been lackluster and Marner is a guy still trying to get comfortable in his new situation. They are also missing William Karlsson due to injury, which is a big loss because of what he provides in all three zones.

Although Vegas hasn’t been overly impressive based on their expectations coming into the season, they still have an elite roster that is sure to be a Stanley Cup contender once the playoffs roll around. The Blackhawks must be ready for an opponent on that level in this one.

With their 11/7 strategy, Landon Slaggert and Sam Lafferty are the likely scratches. Spencer Knight is going to be Chicago’s starting goalie for the second game in a row.

Knight enters the game with a 2.51 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. He gives them a chance to win every start. After allowing two goals in the first minute against the Ducks, Knight locked in and eventually won the game.

Bedard’s November that earned him a “Third Star of the Month” brought him to a total of 37 points, which is third in the NHL. Playing with Ryan Greene and Andre Burakovsky gives that top line a little bit of everything.

There is more offensive depth and speed in the middle six, and a spot on the fourth line for double shifting top players on the team.

With the 11/7 lineup, all of their defensemen are given opportunities to play more when they are on top of their game. It has been beneficial for everyone.

How To Watch

The game can be heard locally on AM 720 WGN in the Chicagoland area. For viewing, it will be streamed nationally on ESPN+ or Hulu. The puck will drop shortly after 9 PM CT.

LAS VEGAS — Goalie Carter Hart, one of five 2018 Canada world junior hockey players acquitted of sexual assault in July, will make his first NHL appearance in nearly two years when he starts in goal Tuesday night for the Vegas Golden Knights, who host Chicago.

Hart was the first of those five players to agree to an NHL contract. The league ruled those players were eligible to sign deals beginning Oct. 15 and to play beginning Dec. 1.

Hart signed a two-year, $4 million contract and has been working with the club’s American Hockey League affiliate in Henderson, Nev.

Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Carter Hart is projected to make his return to the NHL against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

The Golden Knights signed Hart to a two-year contract following his reinstatement into the NHL, along with the four other former Canadian world junior players who were acquitted of sexual assault in London, Ont., in July.

As of Monday, these players – Hart, Michael McLeod, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Cal Foote â€“ have served their suspensions and are eligible to play for an NHL club, cueing Hart’s debut for the Golden Knights.

Former NHL goaltender Devan Dubnyk said Hart suiting up for Vegas is more than having goalie depth on the roster. If Hart can play like a starting goaltender like he once did for the Philadelphia Flyers, the Golden Knights have an asset.

“This is a guy who has a ton of potential and was a really good goalie when he was in Philadelphia coming up,” Dubnyk said on The Hockey News’ Big Show on Monday. “You might have signed somebody who can become part of your team, and then he becomes an asset.

“Whether that’s an asset that you want to keep around, or an asset you want to move for somebody else, they find that out now. I don’t think there’s any point in waiting,” the former netminder said. “If (Carl) Lindbom had been putting up wins and doing his thing, well then that’s a different story, and you don’t necessarily push a guy out of there, but that hasn’t been the case in my eyes, and I think it’s an opportunity for them to give him a look.”

Dubnyk pointed out that although Akira Schmid’s been winning games, Lindbom hasn’t been up to par in Vegas’ net since Adin Hill suffered a lower-body injury on Oct. 20.

Schmid has made 13 starts this season and has a 9-2-4 record, .896 save percentage, 2.51 goals-against average and 2.2 goals saved above expected, according to moneypuck.com. Lindbom, meanwhile, has one win in seven starts while putting up an .870 SP, 3.14 GAA and minus-2.7 goals saved above expected.

Hart should have an opportunity to become the starter with Hill reportedly being out for a little while longer. If the 27-year-old indeed hits the ground running, Vegas will have options to move a goaltender when Hill returns, whether that’s Schmid, Hill or even Hart. While Lindbom is exempt from waivers, the other three aren’t.

That said, every team in the NHL had a chance to sign Hart as soon as Oct. 15. But some teams made it clear they weren’t signing him.

The Flyers confirmed in September they would not sign Hart after the goalie’s representative said it was better for them to look for a fresh start. The Edmonton Oilers, which have a league-worst .865 team save percentage, did not see Hart as an option and instead gave votes of confidence to Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard to start the season.

“Right now, we’re not looking at those types of situations,” Oilers GM Stan Bowman said in September.

Hart was briefly linked to the Carolina Hurricanes in September, but those reported talks stopped. The Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t make any inquiries despite surfacing in speculation, and the Utah Mammoth were out as well.

Before Hart left the Flyers in late January 2024 to face the sexual assault charge, he played 26 games and posted a .906 SP, 2.80 GAA and 12-9-3 record.

Hart wrapped up his conditioning stint with the Golden Knights’ AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights. He made three appearances, registering a 3.07 goals-against average and a .839 SP.

There shouldn’t be much stock put into Hart’s AHL stats, Dubnyk said.

“It’s completely different hockey,” Dubnyk said. “I’ll preface this with not bashing anybody who plays in the American League, they’re still good players, it’s still good hockey. It’s chaotic. It’s chaotic, and most of your chances are created off of mistakes. There are turnovers that don’t happen in the NHL. There are plays that don’t happen in the NHL.”

On good NHL teams, there’s structure in front of a netminder forcing opponents to create chances, Dubnyk added. Of course, he said players such as Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini or Nathan MacKinnon will still find ways to score, even if goalies know what to expect in the NHL.

“When you’re used to seeing NHL play in front of you, it is completely different,” he said. “That’s where you get guys saying, some find it easier to play in the NHL because of that reason.”

Carter Hart is expected to make his debut for the Vegas Golden Knights against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, sources confirmed a report from ESPN NHL analyst Kevin Weekes.

Hart, who last appeared in an NHL game two years ago with the Philadelphia Flyers, was recalled from the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights on Sunday in anticipation of his league-mandated suspension being lifted on Monday.

Hart — along with Dillon Dubé, Michael McLeod, Cale Foote and Alex Formenton — was put on an indefinite leave of absence by the NHL in January 2024 following sexual assault allegations after the 2018 Hockey Canada Foundation Gala.

The 27-year-old was never arrested but was charged with one count of sexual assault on Jan. 30, 2024. The trial began on April 22, 2025, in London, Ontario. All five men were eventually acquitted last summer, with a judge ruling prosecutors did not meet the onus to convict the defendants on any and all counts.

The NHL announced in September that those players would be eligible to sign with a new club on Oct. 15 and be reinstated on Dec. 1.

Hart is the only one who has agreed to an NHL deal. He signed a two-year, $4 million contract with Vegas in October and has been with the Silver Knights for the last month. Hart appeared in three AHL games, posting a 3.07 goals-against average and a .839 save percentage.

Foote was signed to an AHL contract by the Chicago Wolves — affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes — on Monday.

When Hart last suited up for the Flyers, on Jan. 20, 2024, he gave up five goals and was pulled after two periods in a 7-4 loss to Colorado. In 227 career games, all with Philadelphia, Hart has a 96-93-29 record with a 2.94 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage.
