Andre Onana’s Cameroon have not been able to qualify for the 2026 World Cup via the CAF group stage and now face a series of make-or-break fixtures if they are to make the tournament.
The Manchester United goalkeeper is currently out on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor after losing his place as Old Trafford No.1 to Altay Bayindir.
Onana featured in Man United’s somewhat embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby Town back in August and was culpable for the team’s concessions in normal time, before being eliminated on penalties.

The fixture at Blundell Park could prove to be Onana’s last in a Man United shirt but it has proven not to be his final disappointment at such an early stage of the 2025/26 campaign.
Cameroon finished second in their qualifying group, four points behind winners Cape Verde. The island nation of approximately 500,000 people booked their place at a first-ever FIFA World Cup Finals with a 3-0 win over Eswatini while Cameroon drew versus Angola on Monday evening.
The goalkeeper now faces a play-off system contested by the four best-performing second-place teams from the CAF qualifying stage.
The highest ranking team of the four plays the lowest-ranked nation, while the second and third-ranked sides face each other. The winner of each semi-final will then play one another to determine who becomes the sole CAF representative in the inter-confederation play-off.

If Cameroon are successful in the CAF play-offs during November, FIFA’s inter-confederation play-off will pit them against teams from CONMEBOL (South America), CONCACAF (North America), OFC (Oceania) and AFC (Asia).
This qualifying tournament will be hosted in Mexico during March 2026, in which two of the six competing countries will progress to the 2026 World Cup. The two highest ranking countries at the beginning of the play-off tournament will be seeded and automatically progress to one of the two finals, which decide who qualifies.

In all, Cameroon could face up to four more high-stakes matches (2 x CAF; 2 x inter-confederation) to book their place at next year’s World Cup. CAF group-mates Cape Verde, meanwhile, have already begun celebrating an historic qualification campaign and achievement. Cape Verde’s population is approximately 58 times smaller than that of Cameroon.
If the Indomitable Lions do not qualify for the 48-team tournament, it will be only their third such failing since 1986, having participated at Italia ‘90, USA ‘94, France ‘98, Korea-Japan 2002, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022.
Stuart Pearce was famously something of late starter when it came to his football career.
While he would go on to win 78 caps for England and be a key player in the World Cup 90 and Euro 96 sides that reached the last-four in both tournaments, he began his career training and then working as an electrician during a five-year stint at non-league side Wealdstone.

Pearce’s determination and combative nature – two traits that served him well during his career – had impressed Gould, but it could all have been different if Pearce had followed his initial dream and followed in the footsteps of his early hero Gordon Banks.
“My first memory of watching football on TV was the 1970 World Cup,” Pearce recalls to FourFourTwo.

Gordon Banks and Pele reunited at Wembley
“I was eight, and Gordon’s save from Pele is still the best I’ve ever seen. I still look back at that save and think, ‘How did he keep that out?’
“Gordon inspired me to become a goalkeeper – I won my first medal in that position, and only became an outfield player out of frustration. As a kid, the players in front of me were so shabby, I thought, ‘I’ve got to go up top!’

“Then we might score six but still concede eight, and I got frustrated with that too, which is why I became a defender.”
Banks – who was ranked at No.3 in FourFourTwo’s list of the greatest-ever goalkeepers – remains an English football legend to this day, having made almost 700 career appearances and starred for the Three Lions in their 1966 World Cup win.

His save from Pele in the 1970 World Cup that Pearce references was his signature moment, and brought about a hilarious exchange before the resulting corner was taken:
“I thought that was a goal,” said Pele, with Banks replying: “You and me both,” before England skipper Bobby Moore added: “You’re getting old, Banksy, you used to hold on to them.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says goalkeeper Alisson will miss the game against Chelsea on Saturday after the Brazilian was injured against Galatasaray.
The 32-year-old had to be replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili in the 56th minute of the 1-0 Champions League defeat in Istanbul.
Alisson limped off after saving from goalscorer Victor Osimhen, while striker Hugo Ekitike then pulled up after stretching for the ball and also had to be replaced.
Slot said the Brazil international had felt something when “sprinting back”.
“If my player is on the floor, nine out of 10 times I fear the worst and with the worst I mean that he cannot continue,” Slot said.
“It’s never positive if you go off like this. You can be sure he is not playing Saturday.”
Mamardashvili is in line for a Premier League debut at Stamford Bridge. The Georgian was signed from Valencia in the summer for £29m.
Alisson missed 10 Premier League games last season with a hamstring injury.
There is also a doubt over Ekitike, who limped off during the second half.
“I wasn’t really thinking that we had an injury, but Hugo felt something,” Slot added.
“He said he couldn’t continue, so we had to take him off. Let’s see how he is for the weekend.”

In her acceptance speech, Hampton paid tribute to Matt Beard, the former Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham and Bristol City manager, who died on Saturday aged 47.
“The women’s game sadly on Saturday lost a real trailblazer, Matt Beard,” said Hampton. “Matt was someone who cared an awful lot for the women’s game when no-one else did. He lit up the room whenever he was in it.
“And this is just a message to show that not everyone should have to go through these dark moments alone. Sometimes the brightest smiles in the room hide the heaviest pain. He’ll be greatly missed.”
Born with a serious eye condition, Hampton was told by doctors she should not play football. She had multiple operations to try to correct her vision but it is not perfect and she still has depth perception issues.
“Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you to France Football for this award,” said Hampton, who thanked all the coaches and her family members. “I don’t think it’s an achievement for me but for women’s goalkeeping, that the award is finally now taking part.
“I stand on the shoulders of so many great goalkeepers of the past. Sitting alongside my fellow nominees, I’m proud to be a part of such an incredible group and inspiring future generations of goalkeepers coming through and training so hard.
“I’d like to thank my family, my brother – who is here tonight – for the sacrifices that you made when I was growing up, driving me around everywhere so that I could fulfil my dream and be here tonight.
“To all the coaches, there’s so many. To Sarina for having the faith in me over the summer, with the success we’ve had. To the fans – your support does not go unnoticed and it truly means a lot.
“Finally, to Grandpa. I love and miss you every day. I hope I made you proud. We did it.”
