European superpower Germany proved too strong for an England team featuring two teenagers in the last 16 of the European Championships in Croatia.

Going for a third Women’s Team title in a row, Germany lined up with three players inside the world’s top 70.

Previous reports

Despite that, England approached the match positively on the back of coming through January’s qualifying tournament and then beating the ninth-ranked side Italy in the groups to get to this stage.

When Tin-Tin Ho took the first game against Annett Kaufmann, world junior champion last year and world ranked 65, hopes may have been raised a little.

But that was just the invitation for Kaufmann to step it up and keep Ho (WR 247) at arm’s length for the next three games.

Tianer Yu, brilliant in the defeat of Italy, gave as good as she got in the first two games of her match against Sabine Winter, ranked 262 places above her at No 28 in the world. It was only in the third that Winter was able to finally subdue her opponent.

Ella Pashley (WR 908) was unlucky not to have featured in the qualifying tournament, having been selected to play No 3 against a Greenland side which ended up fielding only two players.

She showed few signed of nerves on her belated senior tournament debut, looking to attack at every opportunity, though her opponent Nina Mittelham (WR 69) not surprisingly had the greater consistency. Still, Pashley (pictured above) will only benefit from a match in which she made some superb winners and stuck at it throughout.

All told, England will take a lot of positives from achieving a top-16 place.

Englandâ€s men faced Netherlands in the 17-24th position bracket and brought in Connor Green for his first senior tournament match.

Tom Jarvis won his two matches, including a nip-and-tuck opener against Milo De Boer, while Green led Gabrielius Camara 2-1 before his opponent came back to win 3-2 in Match 2.

Sam Walkerâ€s 3-1 defeat in a tight match against Kas Van Oost proved pivotal as, although Jarvis beat Camara in four, Green could not get a game off De Boer in the decider and the Dutch triumphed 3-2.

Although O’Neill resigned in April 2020 to take charge of Stoke, his absence lasted only 28 internationals and he returned to the post in December 2022.

The group to which he returned, however, was radically different to the one he left.

Injury ended the international careers of Steven Davis and Dallas earlier than expected, while the retirements of Jonny Evans and Craig Cathcart robbed the group of yet more experienced campaigners.

Leading such a young group presented a different challenge to his first spell, but the impact of O’Neill’s previous time in charge still counted in his favour.

“You saw the success that he had before and he’s a massive name back home,” said Liverpool’s Conor Bradley who has been given a leadership role in the team by O’Neill.

“He’s a special manager. He gives you confidence going into games, and it’s a big part of management to be able to do that, but tactically as well he’s top notch.”

Bingham gave O’Neill his international debut in February 1988 when he was still just 18-years-old and only four months after Newcastle United had signed him from Irish League side Coleraine.

With his new-look Northern Ireland side built around young talents like Bradley, Isaac Price, Shea Charles and Justin Devenny, O’Neill feels the belief shown in him as a teenager has proven instructive to his approach to international management.

“Billy put a lot of faith in me and maybe the fact that he put that faith in me has influenced me to put faith in young players as well,” he said.

One such player is Isaac Price who was given his international debut as a 19-year-old who had played just 13 senior minutes for Everton.

“He’s been perfect for me. He brought me in at a time he didn’t have to,” said Price, who later moved to Standard Liege and is now with West Brom.

“I was playing under-23s football at Everton and he saw something in me he thought he could use and develop.”

Price became the youngest player to score 10 times for Northern Ireland when he netted against Germany in the 3-1 defeat last month.

The 22-year-old had missed a penalty against Luxembourg three days prior to scoring in Cologne and credits a brief exchange with O’Neill as vital in quickly moving on from his poor performance.

“You’ve missed a penalty, didn’t play very well, and it’s a bit of a low point. You feel like everything’s coming down and then you’re going to play Germany,” he added.

“The night before the game Michael comes over to me and just says ‘forget about what happened the other night, you’ll go out and do something’ and then it happens.

“That’s his experience. Michael has been around football so long, he’d have seen it with so many players. He just managed me really well.”

Match Preview

With no Kai Havertz or Niclas Füllkrug, Nagelsmann has kept faith with three much less experienced forwards including Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade, who is in line for a fifth cap.

Florian Wirtz is among the more familiar internationals in terms of caps but he’s a long way behind captain Joshua Kimmich, who could made his 104th senior appearance on Friday.

Only Woltemade, Wirtz and Brentford’s Kevin Schade play their football outside the Bundesliga. Only veteran goalkeeper Oliver Baumann could be in line for a cap on the familiar turf of his club side.

Six of Luxembourg’s squad also play their club football in Germany. One of those is St Pauli’s Danel Sinani, who is three goals away from climbing out of the chasing pack to become his country’s second-highest goalscorer.

They haven’t scored a goal against Germany since October 1990, 294 minutes of football ago.

Every member of their squad for their October qualifiers, bar two, currently play their football in Germany.

Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade, who both moved to the Premier League this summer for a combined £180 million, are the only two members of the squad who play outside of Germany.

They’ve both had contrasting starts to life in England, with Wirtz yet to show his full potential and Woltemade hitting the ground running and being named Newcastle’s Player of the Month for September.

There’s no space for Leroy Sane, who has not been called up for two squads in a row. Antonio Rudiger also doesn’t make the squad, after picking up a muscle injury in September that will keep him sidelined for an extended period.

At 28, Julian Nagelsmann became the youngest manager in Bundesliga history when he took charge of Hoffenheim.

A staple of German football, Nagelsmann’s style relies on gegenpressing when his team lose the ball. On the ball, his teams often try and dominate possession.

He is ranked at no.18 in FourFourTwo’s list of the best managers in the world right now, and will be looking to add to the three trophies he won with Bayern Munich in his two-year stint.

He may not have come to life in a Liverpool shirt just yet, but Florian Wirtz is still one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.

Ranked at no.1 in FourFourTwo’s list of the best attacking midfielders in the world right now, Wirtz will undoubtedly find his form eventually, and when with Germany, he usually performs some of his best stuff.

With no Jamal Musiala for the foreseeable future, Wirtz has the opportunity to cement himself and Germany’s main number 10 ahead of the World Cup.

Germanyâ€s home kit for the 2026 World Cup has leaked online – and it pays tribute to one of the nationâ€s most beloved designs.

In images shared by Footy Headlines, adidas have gone retro with a shirt that closely mirrors the strip worn when West Germany lifted the trophy in 1990.

As tradition dictates, the jersey is predominantly white, with black adidas shoulder stripes and red-and-black cuff trims. But the standout feature is the flag-inspired motif: black, red, and yellow stripes sweep diagonally from each shoulder, meeting in the middle to form a striking V-shaped diamond pattern across the chest.

Itâ€s an unmistakable nod to the 1990 World Cup-winning shirt, which carried a similar design – though that version placed the stripes off-centre.

Other details include the four stars above the DFB crest, each printed with the years of Germanyâ€s triumphs – 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014 – plus black shorts and white socks to complete the set.

A nostalgic throwback to one of footballâ€s most iconic shirts, the design is expected to go down well with fans – who will be hoping Die Mannschaftcan channel the spirit of 1990 in North America next summer.

Dennis Schroder has been in plenty of big moments before. Heâ€s played in NBA conference finals games with the Hawks and Lakers. Heâ€s played in the Olympics. He helped lift Germany to the last World Cup title.

With the EuroBasket championship in the balance, Schroder took over and scored the gameâ€s final six points, lifting Germany past Türkiye to the title.

“We never shy away from the big moments. … Everybody is so confident,†Schroder said postgame, via the Associated Press. “Just big-time plays from big-time character people.â€

Germany won the most recent World Cup behind the play of Schroder, and they finished fourth in the Paris Olympics. Germany is playing fantastic team basketball right now.

Schroder, who will suit up for Sacramento this season, finished this game with 16 points and 12 assists and was named EuroBasket MVP for his play. What makes Germany so formidable is their depth of talent: Orlandoâ€s Franz Wagner had 18 points with eight rebounds, his teammate Tristan Da Silva added 13, while former NBA player Isaac Bonga led the team with 20 points.

Türkiye was led by the Rockets†Alperen Sengun, who had 28 points in this game to cap off a breakout tournament. Former NBA players Cedi Osman (23 points) and Shane Larkin (13 points) had big roles for Türkiye as well.

Earlier in the day, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 30 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to spark Greece past Finland in the bronze medal game.

Antetokounmpo, Sengun, Schroder, Wagner and Sloveniaâ€s Luka Doncic were named to the All EuroBasket first team.
