George Springer recognized on International Stuttering Awareness Day
\n\n”,”providerName”:”Twitter”,”providerUrl”:” estimated 1% of the worldâ€s population stutters, which would account for over three million Americans and 400,000 Canadians. According to the National Stuttering Association, up to 5% of kids go through a period of stuttering, too, which often begins in the range of 2 to 5 years old. While many kids who stutter in their childhood ultimately stop stuttering, many others, Springer included, deal with it into adulthood.\n\nHosting his annual benefits, Springer has always turned the conversation back to the kids he works with, saying how much theyâ€ve helped him in return. Besides, Springer is just a 36-year-old kid himself.”,”type”:”text”},{“__typename”:”Video”,”contentDate”:”2023-03-01T18:47:00.817Z”,”preferredPlaybackScenarioURL({\”preferredPlaybacks\”:\”mp4AvcPlayback\”})”:” know George Springer as a four-time All-Star. One of the most important things I hope everybody understands is that you just need to embrace it. Embrace who you are. Embrace how you talk.â€\n\nSpringer has been an important public figure for people who live with a stutter, especially kids. It’s arguable — it would be regardless, there are too many to choose from — but at least by one unit of measurement, he’s already there. With his pennant-winning three-run homer in Game 7 of the 2025 ALCS, Springer raised his career championship win probability added (cWPA) to 90.8, surpassing David Freese (87.2 cWPA) for the highest in postseason history.
Win probability added is pretty self-explanatory (and more easily visualized). The more conceptual championship WPA factors in the importance of an individual game to a team’s odds of winning the World Series. Springer’s home run took the Blue Jays’ win expectancy from roughly 37% to 77%, giving him .395 WPA (a new ALCS record) on the play. Because it came in the seventh inning of a win-or-go-home final game of a League Championship Series, it also improved Toronto’s odds of winning the 2025 World Series by an estimated 19.7% (19.7 cWPA).
On this scale, you’ll notice that one World Series championship is effectively worth 100 cWPA. And since cWPA is a cumulative stat, Springer, now at 22.3 cWPA this postseason, could definitely end the Blue Jays’ current run in triple digits. After all, his last October meeting with the Dodgers helped to produce his personal best single-postseason cWPA (50.6) in 2017, which still ranks seventh all time.
We’ll be the first to acknowledge that emotions run high in October, and news of one club’s postseason legend overtaking another’s isn’t always welcome. Context is important, and Springer’s been at this for a very long time. As a piece of the Astros’ young core in the late-2010s, he was on hand for the first four of what would be seven consecutive ALCS berths for Houston from 2017-23, and he earned World Series MVP honors in 2017 after going 11-for-29 (.379) with three doubles and five home runs.
Now in his 12th MLB season, Springer ranks 22nd all time in postseason games played (78, tied with Corey Seager) and 16th in plate appearances (362, between David Ortiz and Albert Pujols). Freese, by comparison, retired with 230 postseason plate appearances; even Mickey Mantle, who ranks third all time with 83.5 cWPA, “only” had 273, given that “the playoffs” and “the World Series” were still interchangeable terms at the time.
All of this to say, Cardinals fans, that Freese’s 2011 postseason heroics — and the 84.5 cWPA they produced — remain in a league of their own.

TORONTO — George Springer put his club ahead with a three-run homer in the seventh inning and the Toronto Blue Jays advanced to the World Series for the first time since 1993 by beating the Seattle Mariners 4-3 in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on Monday night.
It was the first go-ahead homer in Game 7 history when a team trailed by multiple runs in the seventh inning or later. And the Blue Jays’ bullpen took over from there, registering the final six outs, including the last three from closer Jeff Hoffman.
“Just pound the zone, and don’t get to [Cal] Raleigh. That was honestly my goal,” Hoffman said on Fox after the game. “Get strike one, put them away, do it quickly, and let the guys behind me work.”

The Blue Jays will host Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 on Friday night when the World Series comes to Canada for the third time. The defending champion Dodgers swept Milwaukee in the NLCS.
“The at-bats before me. If it’s not for those guys, that at-bat doesn’t happen,” Springer said on Fox, referring to his two teammates who were on base in time for his homer. “I’m just so happy for our team, out fans, our city, our country. I’m so happy right now.”
Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez each hit a solo home run for the Mariners in the team’s first Game 7, but Seattle failed to reach its first World Series, leaving the heartbroken Mariners as the only major league team without a pennant. Raleigh, who led the majors with 60 homers in the regular season, made it 3-1 with a leadoff homer against Louis Varland in the fifth inning.

Mikel Arteta says he is happy if his Arsenal team stir memories of George Grahamâ€s famously miserly champion vintage at the club as he prepared to face another defensive master – Diego Simeone, who brings Atlético Madrid to the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Artetaâ€s players are fresh from their 1-0 win at Fulham on Saturday, a result that has left them three points clear at the top of the Premier League with an eye-catching defensive record. After eight games in the competition, they have let in three goals and not conceded in two Champions League ties and one Carabao Cup game this season.
“One-nil to the Ars-en-nal†was a popular chant for Grahamâ€s team, who won the league title in 1989 and 1991. Arteta, who is seeking to end the clubâ€s 21-year wait for a similar triumph, made the point that if victory was everything to Graham, no matter the margin, it remained the case for him.
“Yes, it is and especially now,†he said. “In modern football, the margins and the results you see … itâ€s one goal most of the time. That defines whether you win or not so we have to be happy and comfortable with those small margins and find ways to win.
“Iâ€m not so much aware of the detail [of Grahamâ€s team] as it was a different era. But to be associated with successful teams and teams that brought joy to our supporters and the club is, for me, more than welcome.
“Collectively, we acknowledge the importance of defending. We know that if we excel in that part of the game, the chances and the probabilities to win more matches is going to be very, very high.â€

Arteta was asked for his reaction to Arsenal being installed by bookmakers as the favourites for the title. “The only thing that I embrace is when I see the team, the energy, the temperature, the commitment and the quality that they can deliver … it gives me that conviction that we can go all the way,†he said.
Arteta was full of praise for Simeone, who has been in charge at Atlético since December 2011. When the Argentinian took over, the club were 10th in La Liga and he would lift them to a fifth-placed finish. They have never come in outside the top four in any of his full seasons.
It is possible to see the similarities between Arteta and Simeone; the passionate way that they live the matches on the touchline, their love of unyielding, physical lineups – with gamechangers in particular areas. But Arteta knows that there is a major difference. Simeone has won La Liga twice.

“Atlético have won major trophies, been in two Champions League finals [losing both to Real Madrid] and made all the right steps when they need to do the important step,†Arteta said. “We need to try and do that and we are on the journey to try and achieve that.
“First of all [with Simeoneâ€s team], it is the willingness to win. You can sense that in every single ball, in every single yard, the way that they play. Itâ€s about how they compete and then after how they play. They are two very different things.
“The levels of organisation and discipline are really high and then they have acquired a lot of talents throughout the years that are very specific for the way they want to play. They are very good at exploiting those opportunities.â€
SEATTLE — Did you really think George Springer would miss this game? No chance.
When John Schneider texted Springer on Sunday morning ahead of Game 6, Springer told his manager to stop asking. When Schneider approached Springer in the clubhouse after he arrived at Rogers Centre, Springer told him to beat it. Respectfully, of course, but there was no conversation left to have.
If Springer could walk, he was playing, and heâ€s back in the lineup for Game 6 of the ALCS, batting leadoff.
Springer took a 96 mph fastball off his right kneecap from Seattleâ€s Bryan Woo in Game 5, and in the moment, it looked more serious than the “right knee contusion†Springer has escaped with. Springer underwent an X-ray in Seattle, and he then went straight for a CT scan after the Blue Jays landed back in Toronto near 3:30 a.m. ET.
“He was in good spirits yesterday, I think just getting some reassurance with the CT scan coming back [negative],†Schneider said. “It was going to take a whole lot more, I think, to keep him out of the lineup. So he was feeling better yesterday, feeling better today.â€
Springer is a necessary piece of this team, fresh off a renaissance season in which he hit a career-high .309 with 32 home runs and a .959 OPS. Heâ€s set the tone for the Blue Jays on the bases, too, inventing the new position of “OPâ€, which means “offensive player.†Being a DH involves running the bases, too, Springer believes, so youâ€ll see OP, not DH, next to his name in the lineup that hangs in the Blue Jays†clubhouse.
These are the types of games the Blue Jays brought Springer to Toronto to have a moment in, too. The 2017 World Series MVP came to Toronto with a reputation as one of the best postseason players in Major League Baseball. Even though itâ€s taken this organization a while to get Springer close to the World Series again, heâ€s got one more shot, and itâ€s going to take more than a heater to the knee to make him miss this.

TORONTO — Blue Jays manager John Schneider says he is optimistic George Springer will be available against the Seattle Mariners in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series in Toronto on Sunday night.
“Feeling a lot better than he did yesterday,” Schneider said Saturday.
Springer, Toronto’s leadoff hitter, was struck on the right kneecap by a 95.6 mph pitch from Bryan Woo in the seventh inning of Friday’s 6-2 loss and left the game.
Seattle leads the best-of-seven series 3-2.

The 36-year-old Springer, a four-time All-Star, is hitting .256 with three home runs and five doubles this postseason. His 22 career playoff homers are tied with Bernie Williams for fourth most.
Schneider said Springer got treatment on Saturday and was expected to test his knee in a team workout.
“Just make sure that it’s not bothering him swinging and not bothering him running,” Schneider said. “But he’s a tough dude, so I’m hopeful and optimistic that he’ll be good to go.”
Springer fell to the ground after being struck by Woo’s pitch, and stayed down in the batter’s box while Schneider and trainer Drew MacDonald came out from the dugout. Springer walked gingerly toward first, attempted to run a few steps, then walked off and was replaced by pinch runner Joey Loperfido.
Schneider said injured shortstop Bo Bichette still hasn’t run the bases since pulling up in an attempt last Saturday, the day before the ALCS began.
“You guys have probably seen him in the outfield, but not on the bases yet,” Schneider told reporters. “May do that today. But he’s definitely making progress. Definitely making progress with his swing as well.”
Bichette finished second in the major leagues to the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge with a .311 batting average.
Bichette hasn’t played since he was injured in a Sept. 6 collision with Yankees catcher Austin Wells. He is eligible for free agency after the World Series.
Cummins was ruled out of Australia’s limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress in his back.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.
He said he would be “aggressive” and “take risks” in his recovery in order to play in the Ashes.
Bailey said he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but that it was “getting tight” for him to be fit for the first Test.
Should Cummins not be fit in time for the opener in Perth, former captain Steve Smith will skipper the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out of Australia’s squad for their one-day international series against India as a precaution because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a “minor” injury and said Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be “in a good place to be ready to bowl”.
“We put so much time and energy into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder,” Bailey said.
“He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively.”
A 95-mph sinker from Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo struck George Springer on his knee in the seventh inning of the Toronto Blue Jays’ 6-2 defeat in Game 5 of the ALCS on Friday. Springer suffered a right-knee contusion, according to Blue Jays manager John Schneider, though Schneider noted that the four-time All-Star’s X-rays were negative.
“George is about as tough as they come,” Schneider said. “I think he’ll have to really, really be hurting to not be in the lineup on Sunday. So we’ll see how he is.”

Schneider then called out Mariners fans who booed after Springer rose to his feet and tried to stay in the game. Springer walked to first with a significant limp before Joey Loperfido ultimately replaced him as a pinch runner.
“I know this is an awesome atmosphere to play in. And it’s really, really cool to play here,” Schneider began before switching course.
“I think the fans that were booing him should take a look in the mirror and understand what kind of player he is. And I’ll stop there because when a guy gets hit in the knee and is in obvious pain, and you have 40,000 people cheering … not the right thing to do.”
Springer, who tied the game 1-1 with a double in the fifth inning, immediately fell to the ground after Woo’s pitch hit him in the seventh.
The ball drilled Springer in the kneecap and made a sound akin to a foul ball. The former Houston Astros outfielder rolled over in pain and grabbed at his right knee.
At the time, the Blue Jays were ahead 2-1. They seized the lead in the sixth inning, spoiling Woo’s return to the mound when Ernie Clement scored Alejandro Kirk on an RBI single. The All-Star hadn’t made an appearance since he left a Sept. 19 start against the Astros due to pectoral tightness.

Toronto’s one-run advantage stood until the eighth inning. That’s when Cal Raleigh blasted his 64th homer of the year off left-handed reliever Brendon Little. Soon after, righty Seranthony DomÃnguez gave up a go-ahead grand slam to Eugenio Suárez.
The Mariners’ bats came to life, and Seattle won a pivotal Game 5 to take a 3-2 series lead.
The Blue Jays will host Game 6 on Sunday. Schneider hopes he’ll have Springer available, this time in front of his home crowd.

SEATTLE — Toronto’s George Springer, one of the most prolific hitters in postseason history, left Friday’s Game 5 of the American League Championship Series after getting hit by a pitch on his right kneecap in the top of the seventh inning.
Springer, the designated hitter for the Blue Jays, sprawled on the dirt for a couple of minutes after Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo hit him with a 1-1 sinker that kept riding in and hit Springer.
Springer, who has been heartily booed all series by Mariners fans, was booed again as he limped to first base, where Joey Loperfido replaced him as the pinch runner.

Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported that Springer wanted to stay in the game but was in too much pain and discomfort, and the team elected to play it safe.
According to Rosenthal, Springer needed help getting down the dugout steps and the steps into the visitors’ clubhouse.
Earlier in the game, Springer hit a score-tying RBI double off Matt Brash, his 42nd career extra-base hit in the postseason, breaking a tie with David Ortiz for fifth most all time.
It was his sixth consecutive game with an extra-base hit in the playoffs, one away from tying the record shared by Bryce Harper (2022), Carlos Beltran (2004) and Devon White (1993).
