Forest’s problems do not stem from Postecoglou and it would be unfair to point all the fingers at him.
Issues surfaced in the summer, with Edu, Forest’s global head of sport after his official appointment in June, clashing with Nuno.
The pair disagreed, especially over Nuno’s desire to sign winger Adama Traore – someone he worked with successfully at Wolves – from Fulham.
The appointment of Edu can be viewed as the start of the problems, purely from the viewpoint of what happened with Nuno and how the season has unravelled since.
Edu wanted younger signings with greater resale value, not unrealistic in modern football, but Nuno was unhappy he did not get his man as 21-year-old Omari Hutchinson joined for a club record £37.5m from Ipswich.
Hutchinson was eventually left out of the Europa League squad, although Forest sources have suggested there was little other option when looking at squad balance and who to cut.
Nuno was not sold on left-back Cuiabano, who was close to joining Brighton, with the Seagulls due to send him on loan to the Championship, before Edu pursued a deal then sent him back to Botafogo on loan.
Edu has also been much more visible around the training ground since Nuno’s departure in early September – not unusual for a sporting director, but it is a contrast from his previous routine, having opted to remove himself from a potential combustible situation when Nuno was in charge.
He was aided by head of football operations Ross Wilson, who was asked to stay to oversee the final weeks of the transfer window and leave when the time was right, having agreed to join Newcastle in a deal which was announced last week, and Edu has since naturally stepped up further to fill the gap.
But fingers will also be pointed at the former Arsenal midfielder now.
Forest spent about £180m in the summer and recouped more than £100m, the majority coming from the record £55m transfer of winger Anthony Elanga to Newcastle, having signed the Sweden international for £15m in 2023.
Other sales, like goalkeeper Matt Turner to Lyon and Andrew Omobamidele to Strasbourg, meant fringe players moved, although sources have suggested Danilo, who joined Botafogo, was reluctant to leave Forest, while Jota Silva’s switch to Portugal collapsed at the last minute.
In the final hour of the summer European transfer window a deal for the forward to join Sporting Lisbon on loan for 4m euros was agreed, after weeks of negotiations, but the documents did not arrive with the Portuguese league’s registration platform in time.
Silva instead moved to Besiktas – a club he was happy to join – as the Turkish window remained open until 12 September.
Of their summer signings, only loanees Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko started against Chelsea, while James McAtee, Dilane Bakwa, Arnaud Kalimuendo and Hutchinson – for whom Forest paid more than £100m – were not included, so is there an imbalance in the squad and did Forest not buy well enough?
Postecoglou did not walk into a fully functioning machine, but it had already become clear it was not the right fit.
Forest are now looking to make a swift appointment and it is one Marinakis has to get right this time.
The San Francisco 49ers reportedly have interest in a trade for All-Pro pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson should the Cincinnati Bengals make him available.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Niners view Hendrickson as an “ideal fit” for their defensive system.
However, Fowler added that the Bengals currently have “no plans” to trade Hendrickson and remain “all in” on trying to win this season despite being 2-4 and the fact that star quarterback Joe Burrow is on injured reserve with a toe injury.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano echoed Fowler’s report, noting that he has also heard the Bengals aren’t looking to move on from Hendrickson.
Of course, things could conceivably change in the coming weeks if the Bengals continue to struggle and see their record suffer even more.
Hendrickson, 30, is in the midst of the final year of his contract. He spent the past two offseasons trying to land an extension, but all the Bengals were willing to give was a reworked deal that is paying him $29 million this season.
The Bengals stand to potentially lose Hendrickson for nothing in free agency, which gives them incentive to move him by the Nov. 4 trade deadline if a playoff berth is looking unlikely at that point.
San Francisco makes perfect sense as a landing spot for the four-time Pro Bowler and one-time First Team All-Pro since the 49ers lost superstar pass-rusher Nick Bosa for the season due to a torn ACL.
Bryce Huff has done well with a team-high three sacks, but he is more of a specialist than an every-down player, and the 49ers could undoubtedly use a pass-rushing threat on the other side.
Hendrickson had back-to-back 17.5-sack seasons in 2023 and 2024, and he finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting last season.
He had 13.5 sacks or more in four of five seasons entering 2025, and he is trending toward another big year with four sacks through six games.
Despite dealing with injuries to Bosa and several other key players, the 49ers have managed to hang in there with a 4-2 record.
The Niners are getting healthier with players such as tight end George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy trending toward a return, and adding Hendrickson to the mix would likely energize the team even more.
While nothing appears to be happening on that front presently, it merits watching as the deadline draws closer and the Bengals’ place in the standings becomes clearer.
Cummins’ injury concerns heading into this winter’s Ashes could be a case of a career about to come full circle – but not in the way Australia’s captain will have wanted.
He made his Test debut as an 18-year-old in 2011 against South Africa, becoming the second-youngest player to take a five-wicket haul in an innings at that time, despite sustaining a heel injury during the match.
But his explosive debut proved to be something of a false dawn. Cummins had to wait six years to make his second Test appearance as a young body failed to withstand the load of fast bowling, suffering repeated stress fractures to his lower back.
Fast-forward 14 years, to the upcoming winter of 2025, and back problems have once again resurfaced, albeit this time as “lumbar bone stress” rather than a fracture. He has not bowled a ball since July.
If back injuries have plagued Cummins’ Test career, periods of fitness have been filled with ebullient excellence as a thoroughbred quick.
The 32-year-old, who was made Test captain in the wake of Tim Paine’s resignation shortly before the 2021-22 Ashes, has taken 309 Test wickets at an average of 22.10.
He is even more formidable in Australia, taking 177 wickets at 19.92, while he has also taken 91 wickets against England in just 19 matches.
In the most recent Ashes series in 2023, Cummins played in all five Tests, one of only two bowlers to do so along with Stuart Broad, taking 18 wickets.
A talismanic leader, Cummins enjoyed a glorious 2023 as captain, taking six wickets in Australia’s triumphant World Test Championship final and starring in their 50-over World Cup final victory in Ahmedabad – both against India.
He is the only captain in Test history to win the World Test Championship, World Cup and an Ashes series.
Australia remain hopeful that captain Pat Cummins will be fit for the first Ashes Test against England in November but coach Andrew McDonald says it is getting “tight”.
The 32-year-old pace bowler has not played since suffering a back injury against the West Indies in July. Australian media reported on Wednesday that he will miss the first Test in Perth on 21 November and is doubtful for the whole series.
On Friday McDonald said there was “a lot more positivity” surrounding the skipper’s chances of playing in the opening Test but he would need at least “four, four-and-a-half weeks” of bowling practice to condition his body for the rigours of Ashes cricket. The first Test is six weeks away.
“The reality is, we’re starting to get tight in terms of the times,” McDonald said.
“We’re still optimistic, hopeful, but this time next week, I think we’ll be in a position to get a better gauge on where he’s at.”
McDonald said he would weigh up whether Cummins could be included in the side even if he was a “little bit underdone”.
Cummins has taken 309 Test wickets at an average of 22.10 runs per dismissal.
He is even more formidable in Australia, taking 177 wickets at 19.92, while he has also taken 91 wickets against England in 19 matches.
England vice-captain Harry Brook said it would be a “bonus” if Cummins was to miss out but warned that they could not take any replacement lightly.
“Pat Cummins is a phenomenal bowler and has been for so many years now,” said Brook on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“He’s got incredible skill at high pace and if he’s not there it’s a bonus for us.
“But they have got lots of amazing bowlers so I’m sure they’ll draft someone in who is very skillful. We can’t take anyone lightly.”
At the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards 2025 in Mumbai, Rohit Sharma looked notably fitter and slimmer. Ahead of the Asia Cup final, India have been left anxious as their star all-rounder Hardik Pandyaâ€s fitness is under concern and his participation in the IND vs PAK clash is uncertain.
For the first time in the history of the Asia Cup, India and Pakistan will meet in the final. India beat Pakistan in their two previous encounters in this tournament, but a final will bring its own higher pressure and jeopardy.
Both teams have failed to put in convincingly dominant performances in their respective last Super 4 games. Pakistan beat Bangladesh by only 11 runs, while India and Sri Lanka produced the most thrilling and closest contest of the tournament, as their game was decided in the Super Over.
India had rested Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube from the match against Sri Lanka. But it now seems that it would have been wise to give a rest to their premier all-rounder, Pandya, as well.

Pandyaâ€s absence from the field even forced Suryakumar to bowl Axar the 18th over. Thankfully for India, Axar didnâ€t concede more than 10 runs in that over.
IND vs PAK Asia Cup final: Bowling coach Morne Morkel gives update on Hardik Pandyaâ€s fitness
Concerns have been raised over Hardikâ€s fitness for the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, as he bowled only one over against Sri Lanka and left the field, holding his left hamstring, and didnâ€t return for the rest of Sri Lankaâ€s innings.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel has confirmed that Hardik suffered cramps in his left hamstring while bowling against Sri Lanka. Morkel remained coy on Hardikâ€s fitness and said a call on his participation in the final against Pakistan will be made on the match day itself.
“Hardik had cramps, he will be assessed tonight and tomorrow morning, weâ€ll then take a call on that,†Morkel said in the post-match press conference after Indiaâ€s Super Over victory against Sri Lanka.
India opener Abhishek Sharma also spent the latter half of Sri Lankaâ€s innings away from the field. While fielding in the 9th over, Abhishek was observed in discomfort as he clutched his right leg.
Abhishek was seen sitting on the bench for the last 10 overs of Sri Lankaâ€s innings, getting treatment and chatting with the team physio. Sharma also didnâ€t come to bat during the Super Over.
Morkel, though, assured that “Abhishek is fineâ€and has no major injury issues, and it was just cramps.\

The West Ham United manager Rehanne Skinner has said she thinks none of last Sundayâ€s WSL matches should have taken place, so soon after the death of the former Liverpool and West Ham manager Matt Beard last Saturday. Liverpoolâ€s trip to Aston Villa was postponed but other WSL sides still took to the field around 15 hours after the news of Beardâ€s death, at the age of 47, was announced.
Skinner, whose side were one of those in action away at Brighton last time out, said on Friday: “I donâ€t know why any of the games were on at the weekend, because [of] the amount of people, players, coaching staff across the game that have obviously known Matt. I think the expectation on what people had to do at the weekend was not assessed properly at all.â€
Beard led West Ham to their first cup final in 2019, and was in charge at Liverpool until February this year. Skinner, whose team will host the defending champions Chelsea – another of Beardâ€s former clubs – this Sunday, continued: “I think the contingency plans around these things need to be looked into in much more detail. When you see some of the players and some of the staff that have had to go through the weekend – we shouldnâ€t be putting people in that position. If weâ€re going to talk about the wellbeing of players and coaches you canâ€t pay lip service to it.â€

La Liga news, per Reuters: Brazilian forward Raphinha and keeper Joan Garcia have joined Barcelonaâ€s growing injury list.
Raphinha is expected to be out for around three weeks with a hamstring injury, while Garciaâ€s ruptured meniscus of his left knee requires surgery, keeping him out for between four to six weeks, depending on his recovery.
Barcelona, second in the standings and two points behind Real Madrid, are already missing midfielder Gavi for up to five months after he underwent knee surgery. Fermin Lopez is also out injured but Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde are expected to return this weekend.

Arne Slot has confirmed that Diogo Jotaâ€s family have been paid out the late strikerâ€s contract. In an interview with TNT, he said the following.

Matt Beard memorial fund has raised £50,000

A crowdfunding page raising money for the family of the former Liverpool manager Matt Beard has surpassed £50,000 in donations, as womenâ€s football players, coaches and fans rally around Beardâ€s loved ones following the shock news of his death last Saturday, at the age of 47.
The fundraising page, setup by the broadcaster Jacqui Oatley, originally only targeted raising £5,000 but donations have been flooding in from across the womenâ€s game to see the total climb to more than 10 times that target.
Several WSL managers have also being paying their personal tributes to Beard during many of Fridayâ€s press conferences, including the Leicester City interim manager Rick Passmoor, who fondly recalled facing Beard in the opposition dugout over many years, stretching back to Beardâ€s time in charge of Millwall prior to the WSL being founded and when Beard preceded Emma Hayes as the Chelsea manager.
The former Leeds United and Notts County manager Passmoor, whose Leicester team will host Tottenham on Sunday, said: “Pitchside, we always had a little grin at each other at some stage during a game. Itâ€s a very, very sad time and Iâ€ve just got so many happy memories. He was always smiling, chuckling – maybe not towards refs – but always before and after games, he was talking about family, friends, players and how we can take the game in the right direction.â€

Manchester United: Ruben Amorim has urged Manchester United to record back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time of his 32-game tenure by beating Brentford in Saturdayâ€s noon kickoff.
“Itâ€s really important. We talked about that at the end of the game [Sundayâ€s 2-1 win over Chelsea]. We need the sense of urgency that we need to win, no matter what. Itâ€s going to be really difficult. Every time we start to prepare for the next game and watch the opponent, we think itâ€s going to be really tough. I have that feeling. But for me, we cannot control the game.
“The most important thing is to start the game like we did against Chelsea and Burnley – we need to be really focused and have the feeling of needing to win every match.
“I donâ€t say [doing this] playing well, because I think we have done that, but itâ€s normal that the fans donâ€t know what is going to happen the next game. To be honest, I have an idea, but I donâ€t know how itâ€s going to be and Iâ€m the manager of the team.

Nottingham Forest: Despite having been in charge of Nottingham Forest for four matches, Ange Postecoglou will get to savour the atmosphere of the City Ground for the first time when Sunderland come to town tomorrow. The Australian has yet to taste victory in his new role, losing two games and drawing the others.
“Iâ€m certainly looking forward to it,†he told reporters. “Weâ€ve had four away games. I donâ€t think itâ€s a bad run of form, but playing four away games doesnâ€t happen very often. I am sure they [the fans] are excited to see the team, so irrespective of form or anything else, there should be a really good buzz at the stadium tomorrow.
“Home comforts. The fans will get behind the players so itâ€s going to be great. The players will enjoy it. When they walk out tomorrow night and they hear the noise that will be supportive of them, I think it will help the performance.â€

Celtic: Having been denied a summer move to an unspecified club rumoured to have been Brentford, Celtic striker Daizen Maeda has been out of sorts this season and was hooked at half-time in Celticâ€s Europa League draw with Red Star on Wednesday. Brendan Rodgers said after the game that the Japanese striker “wasnâ€t at his best or anywhere near itâ€.
However, the Celtic manager has since said he backs Maeda to return to form, as long as he doesnâ€t wallow in self-pity. “You canâ€t underestimate how difficult itâ€s been for him,†he said. “This is a guy who has given absolutely everything for this football club and even sometimes when you want to give your best, thereâ€s a subconscious thing that can obviously hold you back a little bit.

WSL: Manchester City will be without their England winger Lauren Hemp for a “couple of weeksâ€, their head coach Andrée Jeglertz has confirmed. Hemp was seen wearing a protective boot on the sidelines as Manchester City beat Everton 3-1 in the Subway League Cup group stage on Wednesday.
Speaking during his press conference on Friday afternoon, Jeglertz said: “She has an ankle injury and sheâ€s out for a couple of weeks. Itâ€s a tough situation for her, she wants to play, we want her to play, and she wants to contribute to the team, but injuries happen and sheâ€s doing everything she can to get back as quickly as possible. Hopefully she will be back soon.â€

Tottenham Hotspur: An expression of interest to buy the club by a consortium led by the former DJ and Nasa engineer turned tech bro Brooklyn Earick, 41, has been “unequivocally rejected†by owners ENIC, according to PA.
A report in The Sun on Thursday night stated American tech entrepreneur Earick was ready to launch an overall £4.5bn takeover bid for the Premier League club. Spurs†majority owners ENIC, which is run by the Lewis family trust, earlier this month rejected expressions of interest from Amanda Staveleyâ€s PCP International Finance and a consortium of investors led by Dr Roger Kennedy and Wing-Fai Ng through Firehawk Holdings Limited.
A club statement at the time insisted “Tottenham Hotspur is not for sale†and PA say a source close to the Lewis family reiterated that message on Thursday night.

West Ham: One-time flavour of the month turned favourite for the sack race, Graham Potter takes West Ham to Hill Dickenson Stadium on Monday night in desperate need of a win to try and silence his many critics among the West Ham fan base. Given the cloud of toxicity that hung over the London Stadium during West Hamâ€s loss to Crystal Palace last weekend, Potter and his players may well prefer to be playing a couple of hundred miles away from home.
“I think you have to accept that at the highest level that the margins are small,†said Potter of a dismal start to the season in which West Ham have lost four league games out of five and been knocked out of the Carabao Cup. “You canâ€t wait for those to come round for you and you just have to keep working. Newcastle United: Joelinton ended a nine-month goal drought by scoring his first two goals of the calendar year two goals against Bradford City as Newcastle began the defence of the Carabao Cup and his said he and his teammates have not been unsettled by the protracted and occasionally unseemly departure of Alexander Isak from the club during the summer.
“We had a good pre-season,†said the Brazilian. “We know the noise around but we are professional. We kept the focus and do what we have to do on the pitch, and everyone has done well. We wish Alex the best. He did well for the club and now heâ€s gone and we have to focus on the players that are here in the squad and keep going.â€
Newcastle host Arsenal on Sunday and will be hoping to beat them at St James†Park for the fourth time in succession. Arsenal: Already five points behind Liverpool in the title race after just five games, the club face what could be an extremely tricky assignment on Sunday when they travel to St James†Park. Arteta has been buttering up Newcastleâ€s head coach and the clubâ€s fans ahead of the trip.

Arsenal: Arteta goes on to express his delight that William Saliba has signed a new five-year contract with Arsenal and says that he hopes everyone on the planet follows suit. “Hopefully it will be everyone in the world very soon,†he says.
“That is what Iâ€m hoping. Itâ€s great to see so many players willing to stay. [Saliba] is very impressive for his age because sometimes we tend to forget [how young he is]. Itâ€s his consistency and the way he has matured as a person. Year after year he has built a partnership, with Gabriel especially, but the back line and the keeper.

Arsenal: Mikel Arteta opened his press conference with some words of condolence and support for the family of Billy Vigar, the 21-year-old former Arsenal academy player who passed away yesterday after suffering a “significant brain injury†while playing for Chichester City in the Isthmian League last weekend.
“Shocking news,†says the Arsenal head coach. “Straight away I am thinking about the family and how difficult it is to go through something like this. Our full support with the family.â€

Newcastle United: Having overseen a revolution at Newcastle since the Saudi takeover of the club in 2021, Eddie Howe is now concentrating on evolution as his team prepares to welcome Arsneal to St James†Park on Sunday.
“They are a different team [to last season] but likewise we are a different team,†he tells reporters. “We are still in the moment of finding out what team we are going to be and there have been really positive signs already this season. Against Bradford there were signs of the creative side to our game and the technical side was in a really good place and we are going to need something similar [on Sunday].â€

The West Ham United manager Rehanne Skinner has said she thinks none of last Sundayâ€s WSL matches should have taken place, so soon after the death of the former Liverpool and West Ham manager Matt Beard last Saturday. Liverpoolâ€s trip to Aston Villa was postponed but other WSL sides still took to the field around 15 hours after the news of Beardâ€s death, at the age of 47, was announced.
Skinner, whose side were one of those in action away at Brighton last time out, said on Friday: “I donâ€t know why any of the games were on at the weekend, because [of] the amount of people, players, coaching staff across the game that have obviously known Matt. I think the expectation on what people had to do at the weekend was not assessed properly at all.â€
Beard led West Ham to their first cup final in 2019, and was in charge at Liverpool until February this year. Skinner, whose team will host the defending champions Chelsea – another of Beardâ€s former clubs – this Sunday, continued: “I think the contingency plans around these things need to be looked into in much more detail. When you see some of the players and some of the staff that have had to go through the weekend – we shouldnâ€t be putting people in that position. If weâ€re going to talk about the wellbeing of players and coaches you canâ€t pay lip service to it.â€

La Liga news, per Reuters: Brazilian forward Raphinha and keeper Joan Garcia have joined Barcelonaâ€s growing injury list.
Raphinha is expected to be out for around three weeks with a hamstring injury, while Garciaâ€s ruptured meniscus of his left knee requires surgery, keeping him out for between four to six weeks, depending on his recovery.
Barcelona, second in the standings and two points behind Real Madrid, are already missing midfielder Gavi for up to five months after he underwent knee surgery. Fermin Lopez is also out injured but Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde are expected to return this weekend.

Arne Slot has confirmed that Diogo Jotaâ€s family have been paid out the late strikerâ€s contract. In an interview with TNT, he said the following.
“The grief of the city, that is what makes it for me so special to work at this club. To work at a club where there is success and there is a parade, of course this parade is bigger than any parade everywhere around the world. Matt Beard memorial fund has raised £50,000

A crowdfunding page raising money for the family of the former Liverpool manager Matt Beard has surpassed £50,000 in donations, as womenâ€s football players, coaches and fans rally around Beardâ€s loved ones following the shock news of his death last Saturday, at the age of 47.
The fundraising page, setup by the broadcaster Jacqui Oatley, originally only targeted raising £5,000 but donations have been flooding in from across the womenâ€s game to see the total climb to more than 10 times that target.
Several WSL managers have also being paying their personal tributes to Beard during many of Fridayâ€s press conferences, including the Leicester City interim manager Rick Passmoor, who fondly recalled facing Beard in the opposition dugout over many years, stretching back to Beardâ€s time in charge of Millwall prior to the WSL being founded and when Beard preceded Emma Hayes as the Chelsea manager.
The former Leeds United and Notts County manager Passmoor, whose Leicester team will host Tottenham on Sunday, said: “Pitchside, we always had a little grin at each other at some stage during a game. Itâ€s a very, very sad time and Iâ€ve just got so many happy memories. He was always smiling, chuckling – maybe not towards refs – but always before and after games, he was talking about family, friends, players and how we can take the game in the right direction.â€

Manchester United: Ruben Amorim has urged Manchester United to record back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time of his 32-game tenure by beating Brentford in Saturdayâ€s noon kickoff.
“Itâ€s really important. We talked about that at the end of the game [Sundayâ€s 2-1 win over Chelsea]. We need the sense of urgency that we need to win, no matter what. Itâ€s going to be really difficult. Every time we start to prepare for the next game and watch the opponent, we think itâ€s going to be really tough. I have that feeling. But for me, we cannot control the game.
“The most important thing is to start the game like we did against Chelsea and Burnley – we need to be really focused and have the feeling of needing to win every match.
“I donâ€t say [doing this] playing well, because I think we have done that, but itâ€s normal that the fans donâ€t know what is going to happen the next game. To be honest, I have an idea, but I donâ€t know how itâ€s going to be and Iâ€m the manager of the team.

Nottingham Forest: Despite having been in charge of Nottingham Forest for four matches, Ange Postecoglou will get to savour the atmosphere of the City Ground for the first time when Sunderland come to town tomorrow. The Australian has yet to taste victory in his new role, losing two games and drawing the others.
“Iâ€m certainly looking forward to it,†he told reporters. “Weâ€ve had four away games. I donâ€t think itâ€s a bad run of form, but playing four away games doesnâ€t happen very often. Celtic: Having been denied a summer move to an unspecified club rumoured to have been Brentford, Celtic striker Daizen Maeda has been out of sorts this season and was hooked at half-time in Celticâ€s Europa League draw with Red Star on Wednesday. Brendan Rodgers said after the game that the Japanese striker “wasnâ€t at his best or anywhere near itâ€.

West Ham: One-time flavour of the month turned favourite for the sack race, Graham Potter takes West Ham to Hill Dickenson Stadium on Monday night in desperate need of a win to try and silence his many critics among the West Ham fan base. Newcastle United: Joelinton ended a nine-month goal drought by scoring his first two goals of the calendar year two goals against Bradford City as Newcastle began the defence of the Carabao Cup and his said he and his teammates have not been unsettled by the protracted and occasionally unseemly departure of Alexander Isak from the club during the summer.
“We had a good pre-season,†said the Brazilian. “We know the noise around but we are professional. We kept the focus and do what we have to do on the pitch, and everyone has done well. We wish Alex the best. He did well for the club and now heâ€s gone and we have to focus on the players that are here in the squad and keep going.â€
Newcastle host Arsenal on Sunday and will be hoping to beat them at St James†Park for the fourth time in succession. Joelinton is confident they can do so. “Thatâ€s the way we feel against everybody,†he said. “Every time we step on the pitch, we try to represent Newcastle in the best way possible against any team. We believe in ourselves and know we can play against anyone, and thatâ€s what we try every game.â€

Arsenal: Already five points behind Liverpool in the title race after just five games, the club face what could be an extremely tricky assignment on Sunday when they travel to St James†Park. Arteta has been buttering up Newcastleâ€s head coach and the clubâ€s fans ahead of the trip.
“I always praise the work Eddie [Howe] and his staff have done there,†he says. “They have managed to create such an atmosphere at home and a clear identity. It is going to be another tough test. We know we are going to have to be more efficient to win the game and we are going to work on that in the next couple of days. [The atmosphere at St James†Park] is incredibly beautiful. One of the best atmospheres in this country. They play every single ball with you. Itâ€s electric. Itâ€s one team in one city. Itâ€s a great atmosphere to play in.â€

Arsenal: Arteta goes on to express his delight that William Saliba has signed a new five-year contract with Arsenal and says that he hopes everyone on the planet follows suit. “Hopefully it will be everyone in the world very soon,†he says.
“That is what Iâ€m hoping. Itâ€s great to see so many players willing to stay. [Saliba] is very impressive for his age because sometimes we tend to forget [how young he is]. Itâ€s his consistency and the way he has matured as a person. Year after year he has built a partnership, with Gabriel especially, but the back line and the keeper.
“Every time I sit with a player and I see what their intentions are its that they want to stay with us. We donâ€t take it for granted. It means the club are doing really well to make players and staff feel valuable.â€

Arsenal: Mikel Arteta opened his press conference with some words of condolence and support for the family of Billy Vigar, the 21-year-old former Arsenal academy player who passed away yesterday after suffering a “significant brain injury†while playing for Chichester City in the Isthmian League last weekend.
“Shocking news,†says the Arsenal head coach. “Straight away I am thinking about the family and how difficult it is to go through something like this. Our full support with the family.â€

Newcastle United: Having overseen a revolution at Newcastle since the Saudi takeover of the club in 2021, Eddie Howe is now concentrating on evolution as his team prepares to welcome Arsneal to St James†Park on Sunday.
“They are a different team [to last season] but likewise we are a different team,†he tells reporters. “We are still in the moment of finding out what team we are going to be and there have been really positive signs already this season. Against Bradford there were signs of the creative side to our game and the technical side was in a really good place and we are going to need something similar [on Sunday].â€

PORTUGUESE TO ENGLISH, “Bonfim†translates to “good end†or “good outcome.†Caio Bonfimâ€s surname tells you the story.
The huge smile on the 34-year-old Brazilianâ€s face, the finishline tape and gold medal draped around his neck are all the explanation youâ€ll need.

Bonfimâ€s 1:18:35 gold in the menâ€s 20K came on top of the 35K silver heâ€d earned on opening day, and along with Alison dos Santosâ€s 400H silver, lifted his nation to 13th on the medal table.
All smiles after holding off Chinaâ€s Zhaozhao Wang in the race to the National Stadium wire, he also revealed a loss. His wedding ring had slipped off somewhere around the 3K mark, down Gingko Tree Lane, but he soon smiled, “I believe my wife will be OK because I won today.â€
He asked a cameraman to relay this message to his children, back home: “Your father is a world champion.â€
This was the 20th and last Worlds 20K – the event will be extended to 21.1K (half-marathon) in Beijing. Eight of the 20s have gone to Latin Americans, but this was the first to Brazil.
Bonfim has been knocking on the golden global door for years. He had taken the â€23 Worlds 20K bronze, the â€24 Olympic 20K silver and the Tokyo 35K silver.
He battled past four top rivals, Wang (2nd in 1:18:43), Spain ‘s Paul McGrath (3rd, 1:18:45) and the French pair of Aurélien Quinion (1:18.49) and Gabriel Bordier (1:19:23) for the gold.
“This is my first big international medal, so I couldnâ€t be happier about the result,†said silver winner Wang.
“It was a dream come true,†said bronze medalist McGrath, who has a Spanish mother, Scottish father, Irish grandparents and trinational heritage.
Tashikazu Yamanishi came in as both WR holder and world leader with his 1:16:10 from February. Japanâ€s great golden hope, he was buoyed by the throngs lining the course, leading for K after K only to see the dreaded red paddle for technique violation late in the race. Sat down with 2:00 of penalty time, he was never again a factor and finished a saddened 28th in 1:22:39.
“I donâ€t know what to do now,†he lamented. “To win in Tokyo was one of my big goals. I need to think about my next steps.â€
All but 5 of the 48 starters finished; 4 were DQed. Canadaâ€s Evan Dunfee, the Tokyo 35K king, scratched out with a hamstring injury. Team USA, well represented in 47 of the 49 Worlds events, had no one in the two menâ€s walks.

As the Leafs continue to work through options in training camp, head coach Craig Berube has made it clear that he will try different players in that spot. With Max Domi sidelined at the start of the camp, Matias Maccelli got a chance to audition playing on the top line against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.
During an appearance on The Kyper and Bourne Show,Treliving was asked about how he plans to approach potential additions. The Leafs’ general manager emphasized patience and flexibility rather than rushing into an external move.

“Step one right now is seeing what we have in camp,†Treliving told hosts Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne. “I know everybodyâ€s focused on that one spot, and certainly we are, but you donâ€t know where chemistry is going to come from. You can put it on paper, but until you get on the ice and see who fits with who, you donâ€t know.â€
Beyond offensive production, Treliving also stressed that the right complement for Matthews and Knies may bring a different set of skills to that spot, much like Mitch Marner did before his departure in the off-season.
“Sometimes it needs a little bit of different ingredients — whether itâ€s a defensive presence, someone who can forecheck, create loose pucks, create space,†Treliving explained. “Itâ€s easy to say, ‘Letâ€s go get a top-six forward.†Well, who is that? And what is the cost?â€
While the Leafs do have cap space to work with, they also have a lot of forwards signed. If they do want to look to the trade market, they will have to get creative, considering their depleted stock of draft picks. Toronto does not have a first-round pick to offer until 2028 and only has three selections in 2026.
That balance between internal solutions and external options is central to Torontoâ€s approach. Treliving also made it clear the Leafs will continue to evaluate both avenues as the season approaches.
“Weâ€re going to continue to look internally while also continuing to look outside and see if thereâ€s an availability for somebody that can come in and help us,†he said.
Treliving expects bounce-back year from Rielly
When it comes to improving on the ice, Treliving pointed to Morgan Rielly as a player the Leafs need at his very best this season.
At the start of training camp, Treliving said that he had a conversation with the 31-year-old about getting the best out of him right from the beginning of the season.
“What we need is the best version of Morgan,†Treliving said. “There was a fire to him this summer. He really put a lot of work into his preparation, and I donâ€t remember many days that Morgan wasnâ€t at the facility.â€
He noted that the defender lost weight during the off-season, which spoke to his commitment to being in better shape to start the season.
Injuries were not a problem for Rielly last season as he played in all 82 games. However, he had a noticeable drop in production, scoring just seven goals and 41 points. He also saw himself taken off his usual spot as the PP1 quarterback.
Treliving believes that the depth allows the team to get more out of all its players.
“It doesn’t just stop at Morgan. You know, I like our blue line,” Treliving said. “We start the year now with Carlo, who came here last year. There is depth there, it’s an experienced group, and you’ve got some guys pushing from underneath. At the end of the day, to be a good organization, you need that at all positions, you need people pushing, and we certainly have that.”

What are the Leafs’ options during Joseph Wollâ€s absence?
The Leafs†goaltending picture has also been complicated by the absence of Joseph Woll.
The 27-year-old is taking a leave of absence from the team to attend to a personal family matter with no timeline for his return.
Treliving made it clear that the team is giving him time and space.
“For right now, Joeâ€s not available to us. Weâ€re there to support him and do everything we can, and we certainly expect him back,†Treliving said. “At this point, we donâ€t know when that is. So, like anything, an opportunity now presents itself for somebody else.â€
That “somebody else†could be Dennis Hildeby, who Treliving said is entering a crucial moment in his development.
“This was kind of his time for me,†the Leafs general manager said. “Heâ€s had two years now over in North America, heâ€s shown at times he can be spectacular in the American Hockey League, and heâ€s had a really good camp thus far.â€
While Wollâ€s absence creates uncertainty, Treliving stressed that the organization will continue to monitor the market for options at every position.
“Youâ€re always looking at ways to get better,†he said. “Whether a player was taking a leave or not, weâ€re constantly asking if thereâ€s another option that can best support us.â€
