FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – On Sept. 26, 2021, the Ryder Cup’s balance of power had supposedly shifted.

The Americans had just run up the score in front of delirious home fans at Whistling Straits, dropping 19 points on an aging European team in dire need of a reboot. Eight of the 12 U.S. team members were under the age of 30. Their average world ranking: 8.9. Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth were among those who represented not just the present power but also the future leaders – young, influential voices whose bonds to each other, their team and their country ran deep. Most who watched that week came away with the same conclusion: the Americans appeared poised for a decade-plus run of domination.

After all, they were younger, hungrier and stronger, while nearly half of the European team was past their prime and few options were in the pipeline. So humbling was the defeat that the team’s best player, Rory McIlroy, broke down afterward in a TV interview. He’d let down his captain, his teammates, himself. Through tears he explained that there’s nothing more special than playing on these teams. That’s plainly obvious in victory, of course, with the inside jokes and the backslapping and the champagne spraying. But perhaps it’s even more apparent when they lose.

So, four years later: What happened?

How did that nadir signal not a U.S. movement but rather a momentary blip?

Luke Donald deserves much of the credit for the turnaround, and he will go down as arguably the greatest captain in the history of the competition. A replacement fill-in after Henrik Stenson’s move to LIV, Donald employed the same meticulousness and obsessive qualities that powered his overachieving playing career to turn the captaincy into an art form. Clear communication, motivational tributes, an analytical back bone, clever techniques to prepare for the uncomfortable atmosphere (VR headsets!), even minute details such as the team hotel’s shampoo and bedding – they all contributed to Donald’s faultless leadership style that has been hailed by not just his own team but also his opponents.

It was easy to chalk up Europe’s five-point spread in 2023 to yet another home-game cakewalk. That anyone with that top-end talent, and so many built-in advantages, could have led the team to victory. But amid the euphoria afterward, McIlroy wasn’t having it. He pounded his fist on the table and guaranteed that this team was special, and this team was different, and this team would win again outside New York City in two years’ time.

“The wheels were set in motion to try to do something that had not been done in over a decade,†McIlroy said.

And so three significant changes were made with 2025 in mind.

Donald was quickly reinstalled as captain, giving him what amounted to a four-year term to maintain continuity, tweak his game plan and build on the many successes of Rome. He and his analytics team overhauled the qualifying system, more heavily weighing marquee events on the PGA and European tours, that would make it more difficult for rookies to crack the roster; their data showed that, while first-timers can benefit from the energy of home games, they don’t fare nearly as well in hostile environments on the road. (It worked: 11 of the 12 players were the same year-over-year, the least amount of turnover in cup.) And finally, they organized a two-day scouting trip, held last week at Bethpage Black, that gave the players an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the venue, test out analytics- and personality-driven pairings, and adjust to the five-hour time difference.

“I really have committed myself to this job because I feel I owe it to the players and I owe it to the Ryder Cup, which has been so special to me,†Donald said. “Every day I’m trying to think about things that could help us, to come up with different things that might just give us a little edge.â€

“My job,†he continued, “is literally to give these guys a better chance to win.â€

The players took it from there.

Old warhorses Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Stenson are all out of the picture, having decamped for LIV and alienating themselves from the squad. In their place are like-minded players who seem to share a genuine affection for each other and unify around a common goal.

“That’s all that matters, honestly,†said Justin Rose, at 45 the team’s elder statesman. “The badge and the boys.â€

Tommy Fleetwood, Bob MacIntyre and Sepp Straka are all stronger, more well-rounded players than they were two years ago. Ludvig Åberg and Tyrrell Hatton boast more big-game experience. But the key difference-maker for Team Europe – particularly compared to their American counterparts – remains the man at the top.

McIlroy infamously began his Ryder Cup career by shrugging off the event as a meaningless exhibition, and now he insists, through his words and his actions, that it’s the biggest and best event of ’em all. He has changed his tune even as his legendary individual accolades pile up, as he becomes richer and more famous, as the demands on his time grow exponentially – and that’s a powerful example.

“Rory has made no qualms about how important the Ryder Cup is to him, and I think that’s inspiring to me. It’s inspiring to his team,†Donald said. “Maybe not quite on the same level as winning the Grand Slam and the Masters, but it’s pretty effin’ close. It really is. So to have someone of Rory’s caliber fighting so hard, that’s inspiring for the team. Obviously, you can’t do it alone, but it’s very helpful when someone like Rory is contributing like he does.â€

Europe entered Sunday singles at Bethpage Black leading by seven points before the U.S. gave the visitors everything they had in what ended a 15-13 European victory.

It’s in the team room, where he carries the loudest voice.

It’s in the interview area, where he shoulders much of the burden.

And it’s inside the ropes, where his game and his aura are so overpowering that it tilts the course in his direction. He’s the focal point wherever and whenever he plays – and that, by extension, allows the rest of his teammates to play with freedom.

Never was that more on display than at Bethpage Black, where (sorry, Monty) there wasn’t a player in Ryder Cup history who endured more abuse over three days than McIlroy. He wanted the smoke and got it. Thousands endlessly booed him. Some ruthlessly taunted him. Even the first-tee emcee savagely started a “F–k you, Rory!†chant.

None of it worked.

McIlroy and Fleetwood twice went 5 under in alternate shot to breeze to victories. He birdied two of the last three holes to scratch out a tie in fourballs, then combined with his partner to go 9 under the next day despite jeering that was so intense, so personal and so vulgar, that nearly two dozen cops were pressed into action to defuse the situation.

Granted, McIlroy snapped a few times, moments for which he didn’t apologize. He bowed and blew kisses to the crowd. He singled some out and barked expletives in retaliation. He complained to the match referee that he wouldn’t play another shot until the fans quieted. Another time, he told a fan to “shut the f–k up†– and then proceeded to stuff his wedge to 3 feet.

No other competitor in this 45th Ryder Cup had endured what McIlroy had over the past three days at Bethpage Black, where he was subject to a constant barrage of heckling and personal attacks from the partisan New York crowd.

In the weeks leading up to the Ryder Cup, he’d viewed such ugliness as “inevitable,†owing to the increasingly political nature of sports, the area renowned for aggressive fandom and humans being capable of withstanding only so much abuse across 36 hours of game action.

So when he delivered amid the cacophony of cursing, McIlroy said, yes, indeed, it was “very f–king satisfying.â€
His teammates fed off that antagonistic energy.

Rose delighted in pouring in daggers. Jon Rahm was relentless for two days. Shane Lowry went ballistic when his final-hole birdie secured the cup. Eleven of the 12 players earned at least one point, a total team effort that took its cues from its emotional leader.

“There’s a stimulus and a response, and in between that is how you decide what you want to do with it,†Donald said. “I think some people find that motivating.â€

Just as it was motivating to avenge a 19-9 humiliation.

To make history on the road.

And to remind everyone that the balance of power in this event never shifted. Team USA once again appears adrift, while the future of the Europeans has never seemed more secure, more cohesive, more formidable.

“We talk about all the people that came before us that paved the way for us,†Donald said. “Now, future generations will talk about this team tonight and what they did and how they were able to overcome one of the toughest environments in all of sport. That’s inspiring to me, and that’s what Rory gets and all of these other 11 guys get.â€

As Donald spoke, McIlroy nodded and blinked back tears. The magnitude of the moment was hitting him again. These were the best weeks of their golfing lives, and they damn sure knew it.

Former AEW star Saraya had herself a rockstar moment in Las Vegas, and Tommy Lee was all over it—literally.

The moment shows Lee mid-lick while Saraya poses with puckered lips, clearly enjoying the chaotic energy. It wasnâ€t just a random encounter either—Saraya was invited to the show by Leeâ€s wife, Brittany Furlan, and she made sure to shout her out with serious appreciation.

“Myself @tylerburgess and @xoitsshelby got to finally see Motley Crue tonight 🥹 thanks for the invite @brittanyfurlan youâ€re a god damn angel of a human!! You and @tommylee made us feel incredibly welcome and we had a blast. Quick Vegas stop on my travels this week was well worth it 🖤â€

The rest of the clips show the trio vibing backstage, watching the performance, and posing for selfies around the venue. Tommy Lee was also seen spraying water backstage, adding to the full-on party atmosphere that followed them through the night.

The event took place on Friday, September 26, 2025, and Sarayaâ€s Vegas detour turned into a full-on Mötley Crüe experience. Dressed in a black halter top and soaking in the moment, Saraya looked every bit the rock goddess herself.

The Montreal Canadiens will be playing their third preseason game tonight, and Martin St-Louis is pulling no punches. For the first time, heâ€s going to be icing his full projected top six, his top defensive pairing, starter Samuel Montembeault, and Jacob Fowler.

That means that on Thursday night, against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kirby Dach is going to see his first real action since sustaining yet another knee injury in February. There were rumours of setbacks this summer, and then, when camp started, he only took part in one of the three scrimmages, which of course prompted questions from the media. The coach said that there was a plan and he was sticking to it, before adding that Dach would see some preseason action.

Asked what he thought about the big center so far at Camp, the pilot explained:

I think heâ€s really involved and intense. Now itâ€s time to play the game tonight, take one shift at a time, and make the plays the game calls for. Please get back into the swing of things, but weâ€ll continue to evaluate and stick to the plan we have for him. […] I wouldnâ€t call it a leash. I think Dacher is in a better place. He did things differently this summer, and I think heâ€s further along. So I think he will be more ready to get going right away.

Turns out itâ€s time for that action now. While the bench boss said Dach was penciled in as the second-line center this season, he still needs to see what the Albertan center can offer and if some chemistry can bloom between him, Patrik Laine, and Ivan Demidov. Needless to say, everyone will be keeping an eye on that line when the puck drops on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the Leafs have opted for a lineup that doesnâ€t include any of their marquee names, such as Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Morgan Rielly. However, they are bringing along promising prospects Easton Cowan and Matias Maccelli, who might find their way into a top-six role. Former Hab Max Domi, whoâ€s dealing with a lower-body injury, wonâ€t be part of the roster, but there will be one former Canadien: Micheal Pezzetta. Cedric Pare, who injured Laine last year, will not be in the lineup.

As for the bottom of the Canadiens’ lineup, it will include two interesting young lines: Filip Mesar, Vinzenz Rohrer, and Joshua Roy will be skating together, while Florian Xhekaj will center Jared Davidson and Luke Tuch. It will be another opportunity for these young players to showcase their abilities.

On the blueline, David Reinbacher, who had a tough outing Tuesday, will be paired with Kaiden Guhle while Lane Hutson has a day off. Ryan Oâ€Rourke and Nate Clurman will complete the defense corps.

It will be interesting to see if the Cola Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Juraj Slafkovsky line can perform as well as they did on Tuesday night. At practice on Thursday morning, Slafkovsky was wearing a full cage following the skate to the face he took in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The puck drop is set for 7:00 PM, and this is the second-to-last home exhibition game. On Saturday, the Canadiens will face the Leafs again, this time in Toronto, before taking on the Ottawa Senators on September 30 in Quebec City and playing them again in Montreal on October 4.

An emphatic win over Estonia was sandwiched by defeats to higher-ranked Romania and Croatia as England got their Mixed Team campaign under way at the European Under-13 Championships.

England, ranked at No 18, were drawn in Group B, where they faced second seeds Romania in their first match.

Dimitar Dimitrov & Amber Lemmon lost a close four-game doubles match to Mihai Iordan & Kariss Serban, and Lemmon later led Serban 2-1 before losing in five as England were beaten 5-0 – although never outclassed.

England then beat Estonia 5-0, dropping only one game across the five individual matches. This set up a key match against 11th-ranked Croatia to decide second place in the group.

Sinan Surensoy & Lemmon were beaten in four in the opening doubles, and Assil Sarriâ€s defeat by Sara Rivetti left England with a lot to do.

Dimitrov pulled one back with a fine 3-2 (11-5, 8-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-6) win over Matija Zohil, but Lemmonâ€s defeat by Karla Ivcic meant England could not win – though Surensoy did put a gloss on the final scoreline with a 3-0 win over Ivan Smiljanic.

England now face Portugal and Slovenia in the second group stage of the competition in Kosta, Sweden.

SAN DIEGO — The Padres will enter their final home series of the regular season with one goal: Earn another series at home next week.

San Diego wrapped up an eventful three-game set against Milwaukee with a 3-1 loss on Wednesday afternoon. On Monday, the Padres clinched their place in the postseason. On Tuesday, they ensured theyâ€d finish no lower than the No. 5 seed in the National League.

But with their loss in the finale, the Padres made things difficult on themselves in the race for home-field advantage in next weekâ€s Wild Card Series. As of the final out on Wednesday, they trailed both the Dodgers and Cubs by two games. The Padres (87-72) have three games left in their regular season — against the Diamondbacks this weekend at Petco Park. (Both L.A. and Chicago have five left, counting their own games on Wednesday evening.)

Catching the Dodgers for the NL West title now seems like a particularly tall task, given that Los Angeles owns that tiebreaker. If the Padres canâ€t reel in L.A., theyâ€re bound for a Wild Card Series against the Cubs next week. The likeliest location for that series is still Wrigley Field, but the Padres would at least own that tiebreaker if they can make up two games on Chicago in the coming days.

Right-hander Dylan Cease pitched five innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts on Wednesday in his final tuneup before the postseason. But it remains unclear how Cease might fit into the Padres†Wild Card Series plans.

With his performance on Wednesday, Ceaseâ€s ERA sits at 4.55. Thatâ€s not a number befitting Dylan Cease, and the truth is, he probably got a bit unlucky along the way. Heâ€ll also be the first to admit that he hasnâ€t been nearly consistent enough.

Manager Mike Shildt has more or less already tabbed Nick Pivetta as his Game 1 starter. It seems most likely that Michael King would start Game 2. Thereâ€s an opening for Game 3, and Cease is an obvious candidate to fill it (alongside Yu Darvish and Randy Vásquez). But the Padres canâ€t afford some of the blow-ups that Cease has been prone to this season.

It appears Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry is going to be OK, though he’s going to need 6-8 weeks to recover after taking a foul-tipped 99 mph fastball to the face.

The pitcher who threw that fastball, Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, was visibly horrified after seeing where his pitch ended up during Tuesday’s game. Fry immediately fell to the ground and was bleeding before being carted off the field and taken to a hospital.

As he revealed to reporters Wednesday, Skubal was concerned enough that he hitched a ride from Guardians manager Stephen Vogt to visit Fry in the hospital Tuesday night. A group of Guardians players also reportedly made the trip.

The Guardians released a statement Wednesday revealing that Fry sustained “multiple, minimally displaced, left-sided facial and nasal fractures” from the pitch. He has already been discharged from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery with no surgery needed.

Skubal’s visit is a nice reminder that a tense and potentially historic division race doesn’t mean players can’t be human beings toward one another.

Wednesday’s game was the opener of a three-game Tigers-Guardians series that could very well decide the AL Central. The Tigers were once as many as 15.5 games ahead of the Guardians in the division race and still led by 9.5 games as recently Sept. 10, but Cleveland has reeled off a stretch of 15 wins in 16 games while Detroit has lost 10 of its past 11 games.

The Guardians led the division by one game after Wednesday, with the head-to-head tiebreaker. If they finish the job and win the AL Central, it will be the largest comeback in the standings in MLB history.

Skubal has been far from a problem for Detroit during its free fall, as he is heavily favored to take home a second straight AL Cy Young Award. He currently leads the AL in ERA (2.21), FIP (2.46), WHIP (0.891) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.30) with 195 1/3 innings pitched across 31 starts.

Consider Collin Morikawa unimpressed, at least so far.

The American, playing in his third Ryder Cup this week at Bethpage Black, had high expectations for the notoriously boisterous New York crowds, which, in his opinion, haven’t lived up to their billing through two days of fans being allowed on site.

Luckily for Morikawa’s U.S. side, there is still time, with matches not starting until Friday.

“I’ll be honest, I think it’s kind of tame so far, Tuesday and Wednesday,†Morikawa said. “I know tomorrow is going to be pretty bad (Thursday’s weather forecast bumped the opening ceremony to Wednesday), but I hope Friday is just absolute chaos. I’m all for it. I think it feeds into who we are and the American players and the American team. We want it. … I think we really have to tap into that. I hope they come strong.

“Watching all these kids, I know they want autographs, but come Friday, I hope they go crazy.â€

When it comes to Morikawa’s teammates, he’s hoping for similar, especially from the usually emotionless Cameron Young.

“I would love to see Cam Young just throw a massive fist pump in someone’s face,†Morikawa said. “He’s a fiery competitor. I’ve known Cam for a long time. He’s been very stoic, right? We’re deep competitors. Whether you see that or not through the TV or through watching us play, he wants to whoop some butt. Yeah, I would love to see a nice little putter raise, undercut, fist-pump. … I don’t know if he’ll do it. He didn’t even smile after he won, so I’m hoping. Fingers crossed.â€

As for Young, who was raised in Scarsdale, New York, he called it the most people he’s seen on a golf course on a Tuesday ever. So, if they weren’t exactly raising the roof yet, he was confident they would be once the competition begins.

“I think they will bring a lot to it come Friday,†Young said.

CLEVELAND — Guardians designated hitter David Fry was carted off the field in the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers after being hit in the face by a pitch as he tried to bunt.

Fry squared around on a 99 mph fastball from Detroit’s Tarik Skubal and the pitch struck him in the nose and mouth area before deflecting off his bat.

As Fry collapsed in the batter’s box and grabbed his face, a visibly shaken Skubal threw off his glove and cap as Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt and trainers rushed onto the field.

Fry laid in the batter’s box for several minutes before being slowly helped to his feet. He was driven off in a cart, and the Guardians later said he was being assessed at Lutheran Medical Center.

Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, paced around the infield as Fry was being helped. The left-hander then threw a wild pitch to George Valera, who replaced Fry, allowing Cleveland to score. Skubal was also called for a balk in the inning as the Guardians rallied for three runs to take a 3-2 lead.

With the win, Cleveland moved into a tie with Detroit for first place in the AL Central. The Guardians were 15½ games behind the Tigers on July 8 and still 12½ games back on Aug. 25.

On September 23, the Monday Night Raw After WrestlePalooza took place at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. This entire episode of WWE Raw served as the aftermath of WrestlePalooza. The Premium Live Event WrestlePalooza was the first WWE event to stream on ESPN. Despite the show being glorified, it received many mixed reviews. ESPN itself gave the PLE a C grade, calling the event underwhelming.

This episode of Monday Night Raw saw many exciting matches and a new start to build new feuds for the upcoming Premium Live Event, Crown Jewel. We saw Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins face off in an interesting promo exchange segment, and an excellent main event match between Rhea Ripley and Asuka.

He further said he doesn’t remember Rollins anymore, as he now hides behind his Vision group. Seth Rollins replied and said this is no longer a two-man show; he is now the sole face of the company. Rhodes left the ring by stating that he has beaten Rollins 3 times and will do it again at Crown Jewel.

The New Day and Grayson Waller faced Penta and War Raiders in a no disqualification match. The match went on 20+, and we saw the use of many weapons such as tables, chairs, and kendo sticks. At the end of the match, Penta delivered an Avalanche Mexican Destroyer to Grayson Waller and secured the victory for his team via pinfall.

The Raw General Manager introduced Stephanie Vaquer to the ring. She came out to the ring and delivered an emotional promo. She thanked her parents and said she had sacrificed everything for this moment. After that, Vaquer addressed her upcoming match at Crown Jewel for the Crown Jewel Championship. She said she will be there and will be ready.

Bayley vs Roxanne Perez

In a 15 minute match, Bayle defeated Roxanne Perez via pinfall. After the match, Bayley pushed Lyra Valkyria, hinting at an upcoming heel turn.

JD McDonagh vs Rusev

JD McDonagh faced Rusev in a 20+ minute match. This match was one of the best matches of the entire night, it received “This is Awesome†chants multiple times from the audience. At the end of the match, Rusev defeated JD McDonagh via submission.

Jey Uso vs LA Knight

After weeks of tension, Jey Uso and LA Knight finally faced each other in a one-on-one match. As the match was going on, Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker interfered in the match and distracted LA Knight. Jey took advantage of that and delivered a spear to LA Knight and secured the victory via pinfall. After the match, as Reed and Breakker were going to attack Knight, Jimmy Uso came out to save him.

Asuka vs Rhea Ripley

In the main event of this episode of WWE RAW, Asuka faced Rhea Ripley. The match went on for 20+ minutes, and at the end of the match Ripley defeated Auska by a roll-up pin. After the match, Asuka and Kairi Sane attacked Ripley, and then Iyo Sky came out to save Ripley. Asuka and Kairi Sane then officially turned heel and attacked Iyo SKy as well, and with that, this episode of Monday Night Raw went off the air.
