Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins’ status for Week 8 is uncertain after he left Monday’s 27-19 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with a concussion.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed the diagnosis after the game, adding Collins will be monitored throughout the week to determine his availability for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“We’ll evaluate him as the week goes on,” Ryans said.

Collins suffered the injury in the fourth quarter when he was fighting for position with Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe and leaped attempting to make a catch. He fell to the turf, with the back of his head hitting the turf hard.

The Texans medical staff helped Collins to his feet and assisted him to the blue medical tent. He was initially questionable to return before being downgraded to out.

This is Collins’ first diagnosed concussion since entering the NFL in 2021. He will have to clear protocol to be available against the 49ers.

Since the Texans have a short week after playing on Monday Night Football, the timeline for Collins to get cleared is reduced. If he has to sit out this week, it will mark the fifth consecutive season he has missed at least one game.

The Texans offense has been struggling all season even with a healthy Collins. Monday night marked the fourth time in six games they have been held to fewer than 20 points and 300 total yards.

Collins had just four catches for 27 yards against the Seahawks prior to suffering the injury. He leads the team in targets (46), receiving yards (339) and receiving touchdowns (three).

Houston’s receiver room was already shorthanded on Monday night with Christian Kirk out due to a hamstring injury. Rookie Jaylin Noel could become the No. 1 outside option for C.J. Stroud if Collins and Kirk remain out in Week 8.

Noel had the best game of his young career against the Seahawks with 77 yards on four catches. Jayden Higgins and Xavier Hutchinson could also get more looks as the Texans try to find answers for their struggling offense.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors have waived guard Seth Curry with the expectation that he will return to the team at some point in the first couple of months.

The move was necessary because of the Warriors’ lack of financial flexibility in the new salary cap environment. They are hard-capped at the second apron and just below it, so they can’t afford to have an extra veteran minimum contract on their books until early November. Golden State’s 15th and final roster spot will remain vacant until the guard’s anticipated return.

It was an interesting offseason for Dawn Staley.

The three-time national champion head coach of South Carolina was a candidate for the New York Knicks coaching job after Tom Thibodeau was fired in early June. She interviewed with the Knicks front office this summer, but New York decided to hire longtime NBA coach Mike Brown.

At SEC media days Tuesday, Staley was asked whether she expected a woman to be hired as an NBA head coach in her lifetime. She isnâ€t optimistic.

“I donâ€t,†Staley said. “And I hope Iâ€m wrong.â€

When interviewing for the Knicks position, Staley was appreciative that president Leon Rose and executive vice president William “Worldwide Wes†Wesley acknowledged the complications of hiring a female coach for the position. Unlike a traditional candidate, there would be heightened scrutiny for Staley and other women who find themselves in that position. An organization looking to make this type of hire needs to look at the process differently.

“Itâ€s not just hiring the first female coach,†Staley said. “Because one, if Iâ€m the Knicks coach and you have a five-game losing streak, itâ€s not going to be about the losing streak. Itâ€s going to be about being a female coach. So you as an organization and a franchise, you have to be prepared about that and strong enough to endure those types of instances when youâ€re a female coach.â€

Staley was also asked about her individual desire to be a trailblazer as a female head coach in menâ€s basketball spaces.

“Not really a whole lot,†Staley said. “I did the Knicks interview because Iâ€ve known Leon Rose for 30 years. I have a connection to him and Worldwide Wes. Iâ€ve known them all my life. It was a real interview, and I like to see what theyâ€re talking about.â€

In her response, Staley urged her colleagues to seek her advice when pursuing coaching opportunities in the NBA and menâ€s college basketball.

“If thereâ€s somebody thatâ€s interested in knowing and being the first female NBA coach, I got all the information,†Staley said. “Come see me because Iâ€ll get you prepared for the interview. If there are NBA franchises that are interested in hiring a female, Iâ€m here too because you have to be ready to take on that and all the things that come with it.â€

Connor McDavid’s contract saga could have some sort of resolution shortly.

The Edmonton Oilers superstar may give his team clarity on his pending free agency before its season opener on Wednesday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Monday’s edition of the 32 Thoughts: The Podcast.

“Reading the tea leaves here, I do think that McDavid wants to give the Oilers clarity before the season begins by either signing or explaining why specifically he wouldn’t sign. So I think we’re gonna have an idea, one way or another, in the next day or two,” Friedman said.

McDavid, the three-time MVP and five-time Art Ross Trophy winner, is scheduled to become a free agent next summer. He has been eligible to sign a contract extension since July 1, but has yet to do so.

The Oilers are coming off back-to-back losses in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers.

Fellow superstar Kirill Kaprizov, who was also primed to reach free agency next summer, recently signed a record-breaking eight-year, $136-million extension with the Minnesota Wild.

However, McDavid isn’t expected to raise the standard even higher, Friedman reported.

“I think if he does (sign), it’ll to be short term. I’m not even convinced it’s gonna be as long as four years, if he signs. I think it could be less than that. And as I’ve been saying all the way along, I think it’s going to be lower than many people expect, below $16 (million), if he signs. I would be surprised if it’s close to that,” Friedman said.

McDavid, 28, has been consistent when asked about his contract situation that he is focused on winning above all else.

But even with a rising salary cap, the Oilers still must manage player salaries carefully with Leon Draisaitl on the books at $14 million annually, Evan Bouchard at $10.5 million and Darnell Nurse at $9.25 million.

Friedman said McDavid is “well aware” of that dynamic.

“There’s a limit of what he can do with all of those other numbers and I absolutely believe that that has been a factor in whatever conversations he’s having,” Friedman said.

Still, ultimately, Friedman said he believes that McDavid, who has spent his entire career with the Oilers since being drafted first overall in 2015, will wind up signing an extension — even if it’s not for maximum term.

“I think there’s a real loyalty there to the players that either he’s grown up with, the Draisaitls, the Nugent-Hopkins, the Nurses, or the players who have come that he has grown to have a great relationship with, the Ekholms and the Hymans, and that’s why I believe he’s going to sign,” Friedman said.
