Dwayne “The Rock†Johnson is proving once again that he doesnâ€t take shortcuts — especially when it comes to transforming for a role.

In a new Instagram post, the wrestling icon-turned-actor shared a behind-the-scenes time-lapse video of his intense transformation into MMA legend Mark Kerr for the film The Smashing Machine. The clip shows Johnson sitting through a grueling four-hour process each morning, applying extensive prosthetics and makeup to become Kerr. He explained the daily ritual in the caption:

“Transformation into The Smashing Machine. 4 hours in the make up chair, every morning. 22 prosthetics (eyes, face, forehead, scars, cauliflower ears, wig).â€

But for The Rock, the transformation wasnâ€t just skin deep. He made it clear this physical change helped him mentally step into Kerrâ€s complicated life.

“By the time I got to set, I felt I was already in Mark Kerrâ€s skin. How he walked, talked, and how he violently, yet tenderly navigated life and dealt with his demons.â€

He also took a moment to express his gratitude for the real-life man behind the story:

“Iâ€m forever grateful to Mark for living a life, so we could all feel it.â€

Johnson didnâ€t do it alone. He credited his team of special effects experts, including Kazuhiro Tsuji, Brooklyn Allen, Glen Griffin, Spring Kun, and Nikki Solow — all responsible for the jaw-dropping transformation thatâ€s already earning Oscar buzz.

The Smashing Machine tells the story of Mark Kerrâ€s rise in the MMA world, along with his personal battles with addiction and relationships. Though the film faced a rocky opening at the box office, critics have praised Johnsonâ€s performance as one of the most powerful of his career.

Would you sit through 4 hours of prosthetics to pull off a role like this? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comment section below.

–Bryan and I will be back tonight and there is a ton of news to talk about between today’s Raw,  King of Pro Wrestling, Bound for Glory and lots of other WWE stuff.  We have a Saturday night show covering Crown Jewel and part three of our Hall of Fame show covering non-wrestlers on the ballot.

–Obviously the big topic of discussion was the angle at the end of Raw tonight.  Given it’s a long trip home from Australia and everyone is en route right now, we probably won’t  have anything definitive until tomorrow or Wednesday.  We do know that people are being told.  Seth Rollins did have his arm in a sling before Raw and there are reports of a shoulder injury from the match with Cody Rhodes, but we don’t have them confirmed.  Whether that changed the booking  due to the injury or the booking changed based on a hot shot angle because most likely Raw today with its early start time would have done the lowest rating in the show’s history so they wanted something to make people tune in, that could be the case.  We were told yesterday that the ratings were very much an issue but if there’s a legit injury, obviously that would require a lot of changes in plans.  People are going to be skeptical, for good reason, about a Rollins injury.  I don’t think they’d go to the well there a second time so quickly but anything  is possible and it should all be clear soon.  A worst case scenario would involve having to do something with the title right after they had set up CM Punk, Jey Uso and LA Knight as contenders.

–One source with knowledge of creative said The Vision were booked for plans together through WrestleMania including with Austin Theory joining the group before things changed today.  They were told it was from an injury in the match with Cody Rhodes.  But after being told his other injury was legit, many are not fully believing anything right now.  In the attempt to work everyone, the belief in what those are being told, and there are multiple cases of this in recent months (the Rollins SNME injury being the one that really cost credibility with several in the room) the lack of trust right now is pretty high.

–Ridge Holland was told today that his contract isn’t being renewed when it expires on 11/14.  Given he was making main roster money and appearing on Evolve and TNA, this is not unexpected.  However, he suffered a broken foot and just had surgery.  Holland was told that they would pay for his medical bills and rehab until he recovers, but his regular paycheck ends in a month and as far as wrestling goes, we’re talking five months or more before he’d even be able to wrestle anywhere else.  I’m really surprised because the rule of thumb was always that for legal reasons you don’t let people go until they recuperate from injuries.  They’ve had non-renewals of an injured man and pregnant woman in the space of a few days .  It is a different mentality than before on this one.

–Some notes from today’s King of Pro Wrestling show.  Konosuke Takeshita beat Zack Sabre Jr.  to win the IWGP title in one of the best matches this year.  I’d say of all the contenders, this was the most complete.  Some had more moves.  One had more drama and storytelling.  Some had more face vs. heel heat.  But this was outstanding in every aspect of pro wrestling.

–After the show, Hirooki Goto challenged Takeshita for the title.  Takeshita talked about doing it before  the Tokyo Dome as he said he wanted one title defense before the Dome, and that would be Goto.  The show had four tremendous matches, with Yota Tsuji’s Global title win over  Gabe Kidd, Yuto-Ice & Oskar’s tag title defense over Yuya Uemura & Shota Uino and Syuri ‘s IWGP women’s title win over Sareee.  One of the year’s better shows.

–Other news is that they talked about Hiroshi Tanahashi & El Phantasmo becoming a tag team at the end of the year.  Bullet Club and The Unaffiliated (Tsuji, Shingo Takagi, Hiromu Takahashi & Titan) all shook hands after the Tsuji vs. Kidd match.  Tsuji and Kidd hugged after a tremendous match with a surprising submission finish by Tsuji.  David Finlay came out with Bullet Club and they teased that they would turn on Kidd for shaking hands, but instead, Finlay took hands with Tsuji and everyone shook hands.

–Tsuji did tease a title defense against Tanahashi.

–Aaron Wolf did a run-in saving Katsuya Murashima, Oleg Boltin and Masatora Yasuda from a beating by House of Torture.  He did some judo moves and later issued a challenge for Evil and the Never title for his debut at the Tokyo Dome.  Really, Evil is a good opponent for his first match.

–They announced a 2/27 show in Trenton,  NJ called New Beginning USA.  That means two things.   First, they  are still running U.S.shows after having backed away for months.  Second, the annual San Jose show at the start of the year looks like it’s not happening.

–BJ Penn was ordered to undergo a mental health exam and be evaluated as to whether he  is mentally competent enough to stand trial for his five arrests so far this year.

–That Je’Von Evans vs. Leon Slater booking was largely from WWE.

–We’re looking for your thoughts on these three shows:
*WWE Crown Jewel
*TNA Bound for Glory
*New Japan King of Pro Wrestling
We’re looking for a thumbs up thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match for each show to dave@wrestlingobserver.com

–Dana White today announced for the 12/6 UFC 323 show in Las Vegas, the last PPV for at least seven years, that Merab Dvalishvili will attempt to become the first champion in history to defend the title four times in a calendar year as he faces Petr Yan.  Alexadre Pantoja v.s. Joshua Van for the flyweight title, Henry Cejudo vs. Payton Talbott, and most likely Brandon Moreno vs  Tatsuro Taira are also on the show.

–As far as the best matches of the weekend, Takeshita vs. Sabre Jr., was something but also John Cena vs. AJ Styles from Saturday, The Sky Team vs. Cavernario & Angel de Or & Niebla Roja from Friday at Arena Mexico, and the other three big matches from King of Pro Wrestling as well as Iyo Sky & Rhea Ripley vs. Kairi  Sane & Asuka top the light.  I haven’t seen the TNA show but hopefully will at least see some of the matches in time for the show tonight.

–Tomorrow the ratings for Smackdown and last week’s Raw will come out most likely.  Raw for sure.  Our Raw article will also give us a good read on international viewing of Crown Jewel.

–NXT will be running the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, the same building AEW set up residency in a few months ago on 11/15.

–AEW from Wednesday night in Independence, MO has a three hour show plus another 30 minutes for the WrestleDream countdown show.
Samoa Joe & Katsuyori Shibata & Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Rush & Dralistico & Mortos for the trios title with Adam Page on commentary
Kris Statander & Toni Storm last words
Darby Allin & Jon Moxley face-to-face
Kenny Omega & Jack Perry & Luchasahrus vs. Mark Davis & Josh Alexander & Hechicero
Gates of Agony vs. Shelton Benjamin & Bobby Lashley
Claudio Castagnoli vs.  Roderick Strong
Skye Blue vs.  Jaiie Hayter

–NXT tomorrow has:
Lexis King vs. El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr.
Matt Cardona vs. Josh Briggs
Zaria vs. Blake Monroe

–Saturday’s Arena Coliseo show saw the stream go out on the CMLL subscription page on Facebook.  As  a makegood, they streamed last night’s show live.

–Magia Blanca worked the fourth match at Arena Mexico last night and then flew to Torreon for a bullring show with Mistico & Mascara Dorada & Neon vs. Bandido & Blanca & Gravity on top.  In Torreon they started the main event near midnight waiting for Blanca to arrive.  The other big story is that Bandido pinned Mistico to win the third fall.

–Pro Wrestling Revolucion from Saturday night in San Jose, CA before a sellout of 1,150 fans at Mount Pleasant High School:  Robin won three-way over Ray Star and Mirage, Hyan & Karsiam b Amazona & Lady Pink, El Cucuy b Rey Horus to win the PWR title (Cucuy is headed to Dragon Gate for three months), Templario won four-way over Jack Cartwheel,Viento and Rey Leon, Misterisos b Ultimo Guerrero-DQ,  Hechicero b Blue Panther

  • On ESPNâ€s Ahora o Nunca, Stephanie Vaquer reflected on winning the Womenâ€s World Championship at Wrestlepalooza:
    • It was the best [match] of my career so far, and the result of the match was the dream of my life.
    • I’m proud because it wasn’t just a match for the most important championship, it was against one of the best in the world, Iyo Sky, someone I’ve admired for many years. So, the fact that I could compete for this title with her proved in the ring why we are both among the best in the world right now.
    • It was very emotional to reach gorilla after the match and have everyone applaud and congratulate me, not just the producers and coaches, but the people I work with every day. Someone as important as Triple H, who for me is not only my boss but someone I’ve admired for a long time, not only as a wrestler but also as a businessman now in charge of the WWE family.

  • On a new episode of her Close Up interview show, Renee Paquette spoke with AEW Womenâ€s World Champion Kris Statlander.
  • Adam Cole is part of the voice cast for the new video game “Curiosity†from DarkBear Studios that launched on Steam and Steam Deck starting today. Here is how the game is described:
    • In Curiosity, players embody a small but determined cat on a perilous climb home. Every leap requires precision, patience, and persistence: one mistake can send you tumbling down. With nine lives to spare (and consequences for losing them all), players must master every jump, uncover mysterious lore, and survive a journey thatâ€s as emotional as it is demanding.
    • Drawing inspiration from titles like Only Up and Getting Over It, Curiosity offers a modern evolution of the genre: combining the viral tension of vertical climbing games with a rich story;  a hand-crafted world, and traditional platforming elements like secrets, collectibles, checkpoints, and even potential skips for the most daring players.
  • Bandido vs. Hechicero for the ROH World Championship is set to air on this Thursdayâ€s episode of ROH TV. The match is from a CMLL event that took place on October 3 and is a rematch of their highly praised Death Before Dishonor title bout.

    • Matt Cardona vs. Ryan Nemeth
    • Mustafa Ali vs. JDC
    • Bound for Glory contract signing with TNA Knockouts World Champion Kelani Jordan and Indi Hartwell
  • On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Scarlett Bordeaux said she felt WWE was “misogynistic” in how they handled her contract situation by saying that they would get to her new deal once Karrion Kross had sorted his contract out:
    • One of the last questions before the 24-hour notice was given, [Kross] asked where I stood in all these contract negotiations. And they said, ‘We’ll get to her once we’re done with you,’ which I took as them using me as leverage against him. I do feel like if he agreed within the 24 hours that they would have offered me something, would it have been the same amount as it was before? Would it have been less? I don’t know. But all in all, it felt like a massive, massive red flag, and I did feel like it did come off a bit misogynistic, because originally I was hired before [Kross], and the idea that I have no value without him, and it’s only determined by whether or not he signs, that came off as very misogynistic to me.

Sunday Update

— My thoughts are that Friday’s Hall of Fame show with Phil Lions, John Muse and Ethan Tyler was maybe the best Hall of Fame show we’ve ever had, with the extensive look at overseas and some of Mexico. This was our second off three weeks of these shows. Garrett, myself and Paul Fontaine last night talked UFC, Hall of Fame and wrestling news. The Friday also has some ratings news stuff but we have a story up on the site that details the changes, comparisons with sports, news and entertainment properties and a lot more.

— After his quick UFC light heavyweight title win, Alex Pereira issued a challenge at heavyweight to Jon  Jones. Pereira is now a three-time world champion with his quick destruction of Magomed Ankalaev in their bout last night in Las Vegas. Pereira was apparently going to challenge Jones in the ring, but because of the death of Arthur Jones, Jon’s brother, he asked for a moment of silence for Arthur Jones after the fight. Jones was very complimentary of that, obviously. It’s what UFC would have wanted as Pereira is a much better champion for business.  However, Dana White was negative about that fight, feeling Pereira should stay at light heavyweight.

— White said he believes Pereira dislocated his toe or toes in the quick fight.

— JD Drake noted that he wrestled Sting in Sting’s last match ever in Charlotte, and then on Friday wrestled Steven Borden in the first match of his career in New York City.

–Right now Smashing Machine is  estimated at doing $6 million this weekend, third behind Taylor Swift The Official Release Part of a ShowGirl ($33 million) and One Battle After Another (11.1 million). Garrett Gonzales talked about it on last night’s show.  I’ll be watching it on Wednesday.  The headlines haven’t been kind since they are based on Swift beating The Rock and Rock’s lowest opening weekend for a movie of his entire career. It was expected to do $20 million until the Swift movie was added for a debut, at which point it was estimated midweek to open at $10 million. So way below expectations. The per-screen number estimated at  $1,793 is almost identical to the opening weekend of Iron Claw ($1,750) but Iron Claw was in fewer screens.  Smashing Machine has publicized far heavier and Dwayne Johnson is the bigger star, but The Von Erichs, even if only huge in Texas in the 80s and other places the TV went, still are far better known than Mark Kerr..

— As far as major matches, I really didn’t hear much about anything as a must see past Bandido vs. Hechicero Friday night at Arena Mexico. There was nothing big from Japan.  Dax Harwood vs. Kevin Knight from Collision was strong. Ultimo Guerrero vs. Mistico from last night’s MLW was strong  as well. Jiri Prochaka vs. Khalil Rountree from last night’s UFC show was fantastic as a fight.

— Tony Khan said that Bandido will be wrestling Tuesday night after Friday’s Arena Mexico show.  I’m actually not certain if that was an injury or just a storyline during the match.  Bandido did leave the building in a sling and said his shoulder popped out but he put  it back in.  The doctor came out during the match, but  it also played into the match story. Â

— AEW on Tuesday for a special night of Dynamite will be another two-and-a-half hour show.  I guess the idea is that after NXT is over, that they’ll have 30 minutes.  We’ll see if that works.  Announced is Brody King & Bandido vs. Kazuchika Okada & Konosuke Takeshita with the new stip being if King & Bandido win, then the one who wins the fall will face Okada for the Unified title, but if Okada &  Takeshita win, they get a tag team title match.  Also Jon Moxley vs. Tomohiro Ishii, Pac vs. Orange Cassidy, Hurt Syndicate vs. Ricochet & Gates of Agony in a street fight, Kyle Fletcher vs. Kyle OReilly for the TNT title and Adam Page and Samoa Joe face to face.  It goes head-up with NXT which has a men and women’s Survivor Series match with teams TNA vs. NXT, the women’s match with Jordynne Grace as referee, plus Ethan Page vs. Mustafa  Ali for the North American title and Hardys vs. DarkState, with the TNA vs. NXT tag titles at stake must be a winner. 4 1/2 hours of likely very good wrestling. NXT is on its regular night so they’ll almost surely have the higher rating.

Collision, taped Wednesday in Jacksonville, has Josh Alexander vs. Kota Ibushi, Toni Storm & Harley Cameron & Kris Statlander vs. Thekla &  Skye  Blue & Julia Hart, Megan Bayne & FTR vs. Kris Statlander & Jet Speed, Eddie Kingston vs. Mortos and The Acclaimed vs. Big Bill & Bryan Keith.

— As far as Google searches for the weekend, the  only combat sports stuff related to last night’s UFC 320 show.  In all, it did 1,180,000 searches. Arthur Jones had 50,000 with people wanting to know the cause of death. It hasn’t been revealed.

— On Friday’s PFL show there was a lot of controversy regarding the Usman Nurmagomedev vs. Paul Hughes main event. Most felt it could have gone either way and should have been 48-47 in either direction. Judge Hadi Mohamed Ali had the first four rounds for Nurmagomedov and 94-46. Judge Brian Miner has been criticized like crazy with people saying his 50-45 scorecard was ridiculous. Judge Daryl Ransom had rounds one, three and four for Nurmagomedov winning 48-47.  MMA Decisions only had nine reporters scores, of which four were for Hughes, but all nine it had 48-47 either direction.

— The only controversial call in UFC was in the Jakub Wiklacz vs. Patchy Mix prelim fight. Judge Michael Bell had Wiklacz winning rounds one and two and a 29-28 score. Judge Ben Cartlidge had Mix winning two and three and a 29-28. Judge Derek Clearly had Wiklac z winning one and two and 29-28.  Media scores were 71 percent for Mix.

— MLW from last night in Long Beach,CA:  Mads Krule Krugger kept the MLW title over Mr.. Thomas, Matthew Justice, CW Anderson, Brock Anderson and Chris Adonis, Volador Jr.  vs. Star Jr. in the Opera Cup, Satoshi Kojima b Bishop Dyer in the Opera Cup  (Volador Jr. vs. Kojima is next  round), Austin Aries b Paul London in the Opera Cup, Matt  Riddle b Alex Hammersone, Shoko Nakaima b Himawari to keep the women’s featherweight title, Mistico b Ultimo Guerrero in the Opera Cup to met up Mistico vs. Aries.

— Priscilla Kelly and Killer Kross will be wrestling in MLW very soon.

— Mercedes Mone was announced for a show on 10/10 in Greve, Denmark.

— The LFG show comes down to the finals tonight with Penina Tuliaepa vs. Dani Sekslesky and Drake Morreux vs. Harlem Lewis.  The show airs tonight at 10 p.m   Great Moments at 9 p.m. is about SummerSlam in the 2000s and 9:30 p.m. will be a show on The Undertaker.

— Black Gordman, on this year’s Hall of Fame ballot, turned 89 today, making him one of the oldest living wrestlers. Terri Runnels turned 59 and Michael Paris, who is Joaqun Wilde of the LWO, turned 39. Â

— Brian Pillman died 28 years ago today. That seems so much less time than that to me. Antonio Pena died 20 years ago today.  Lorraine Johnson, a member of the generally considered best women’s tag team around late 50s and early 60s with Penny Banner, died five years ago today at the age of 90. She’s also the mother of Baby Doll (thanks to Tony Richards)

— Mistico vs. Mortos is 10/26 at the Fox Theater in San Bernardino,CA.

– CMLL announcer and part of creative Julio Cesar Rivera will be at the MLW show on 10/4 in Long Beach, CA. He will be doing interviews and commentary on the show.

– SmackDown tonight on USA is from Orlando, FL. In a trivia note, WWE actually has three shows going on in the same vicinity tonight with SmackDown in Orlando, an Evolve taping in Orlando at the PC and an NXT house show in Citrus Springs, FL. Tiffany Stratton defends the women’s title in a three-way against Jade Cargill and Nia Jax. The winner faces Stephanie Vaquer at Crown Jewel. Also tonight has a Sami Zayn U.S. title open challenge and Giulia & Kiana James vs. Michin & B-Fab. They had 9,100 tickets out for the show at last look.

– Originally Mistico was listed as working three shows yesterday. He did work the first two, but was not at the Arena Neza show. In fact, nobody but Star Jr. from CMLL was at the show. Not sure what happened. The crowd was not told until late in the show that the talent wasn’t going to be there at the Neza show.

– There’s a carriage issue with YouTube TV and NBCU. The contract between the sides expires on Tuesday. The hold-up is money, of course, as YouTube wants Peacock as part of its package and the two sides have not reached an agreement yet.

– CMLL has Noche de Campeones (Night of Champions) tonight with all the matches voted by the fans. Normally this does not draw well even though you would think it should. With the company as hot as it is, we’ll see how this does. They did draw a sellout 16,000 fans last night for the Pokemon Legend tie-in show. For tonight:

  • Tengu defends CMLL Micros title against KeMalito

— We have both of our weekend shows up, with the Friday show talking about all the news of the week and last night’s show talking about AEW All Out, WWE Wrestlepalooza and CMLL 92nd anniversary show. Bryan and I will be back tomorrow night taking Raw.

— I guess the biggest thing coming out of All Out for Wednesday, besides that apparently the PPV did well and all of a sudden afternoon shows for AEW may be the better idea largely because it’s a lot better for a long show to be in the afternoon, plus it helps with European buys. Crown Jewel is only three weeks away in Perth, so Raw should start the build. We already know Seth Rollins vs. Cody Rhodes, and whoever holds the Smackdown women’s title, will face Stephanie Vaquer in the two main events. We should get at least some ideas for the top matches at WrestleDream on Wednesday. Â

— Outside of the two major shows, the matches we’ve heard the most about to watch for the weekend would be Mistico vs. MJF on Friday which was a classic if you love 1970s wrestling (or today’s wrestling for that matter but aside from using modern moves it  felt like the wrestling from another era), Máscara Dorada & Neon & Atlantis Jr. vs. Hechicero & Volador Jr. & Zandokan Jr. from Friday and I’ve been told you have to see Ultimo Guerrero vs. Blue Panther from tonight at Arena Mexico where Panther won the MLW National Openweight title. As best I can tell, Panther would be maybe the oldest singles world champion ever. One person told me that they  thought their 8/8 singles match had a better atmosphere but they went all out. The 8/8 match between them was something to see.

— Google trends showed roughly double the interest in Wrestlepalooza as All Out, which should be no surprise. In the searches for both shows the WWE show was 200,000 and AEW was 50,000. AJ Lee and Stephanie Vaquer made the individual search list while nothing from AEW broke out aside from the show itself.

— We should have an idea of how Wrestlepalooza did outside the U.S. on Tuesday when Netflix numbers come out. It will not likely crack the top ten because it didn’t air in the U.S., so we won’t have numbers, but we’ll be able to see how it did in comparison with Raw and Smackdown in the key countries. Hopefully we’ll have a good PPV estimate for All Out by Thursday. Tony Khan said it did very well. We’ll also see how starting at 7 p.m. affected Raw numbers as compared to 8 p.m..

— We’re looking for your thoughts on CMLL Anniversary 92, AEW All Out and Wrestlepalooza, thumbs up, down or middle, best and worst match for each of the three shows to dave@wrestlingobserver.com

— We’re also looking for dark match reports from Friday’s Smackdown tapings.

— We don’t have more details but Mirai announced she was leaving Marigold. Mirai was one of its funding members and biggest stars, as well as someone who helped train the newer wrestlers.  She said her last match would be 10/13 at Korakuen Hall.

— The hints are that Orange Cassidy will return as the mystery partner of Kyle O’Reilly & Hologram against the Don Callis Family on Wednesday, plus Tony Khan makes a major announcement. Most seem to think it’s women’s tag team titles and a tournament. I do know he made women’s tag title belts some time back and said injuries delayed starting the tournament.

— Raw in Evansville, IN, has 5,037 tickets out per Wrestletix.

— Ronda Rousey shows photos of her training MMA. Nobody at this point expects her to fight again but she said she’s enjoying her training.

— Defy results from Friday night in Settle: Killer Kross b Calvin Tankman, Nicole Matthews b Amira, Midnight Heat b Randy Myers & Matt Brannigan, Marina Shafir b Hyan to keep the women’s title, Evan Rivers won a four-way over El Phantasmo, Ethan HD and Miles Deville, Bryan Keith b Clark Connors to win the Defy title. The Righteous, Vincent & Dutch, were on the show but didn’t wrestle. Next shows are 10/24 in Portland, OR at the Wonder Ballroom and 11/21 back at Washington Hall in Seattle.

— Heavyweights Ante Delija and Waldo Cortes Acosta headline on the 11/1 UFC show.

— Conor McGregor said that he expects to face Michael Chandler on the White House show in June. Â

— Rafael Fiziev is off the UFC show on 10/11 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, due to an injury. Charles Oliviera, his scheduled opponent, wants to stay on the card.

— Mistico vs.Bandido headlined a show in Golden, CO, tonight.
