Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.
If you’re anything like me, you’d much prefer a right-to-left putt to one that breaks in the opposite direction. I feel abundantly more confident when I’ve got a putt that hooks rather than cuts.
When recreational players step up to these left-to-righters (assuming the golfer is right-handed), there’s a good chance you can predict how they’re going to miss the putt, and that’s low and past the hole. According to instructor Kelan McDonagh, this low and long miss is the most common among the students he teaches.
“In general,” McDonagh says. “We under-read putts and overhit them.”
This miss pattern will not only ensure you don’t make many left-to-righters, but will also lead to tons of three-putts. When the ball gets below the break line (i.e., starts missing on the low side of the cup), the ball will continue getting further and further away from the hole.
Ideally, you want the ball to be getting closer to the hole as it loses speed. And the best way to do this is by keeping the ball on the high side of the cup for as long as possible.
“Generally, what we’re trying to do with the recreational golfer is get them to see more break,” McDonagh says, “because as the ball slows down, gravity is going to take it in the direction of the slope.”
Armed with this information, you can make two key adjustments to become more successful when facing left-to-right putts.
1. Play more break than you initially may think. And 2. Don’t hit the putt quite so hard.
When you do this, you’ll keep the ball above the fall line longer, which means that as the ball loses speed, it will get closer and closer to the hole. Do that and you’ll three-putt less often and maybe even make a few from distance.

Shan Masood of Pakistan bats (Photo by Sameer Ali/Getty Images) Pakistani cricket fans at Gaddafi Stadium displayed unusual behaviour during day one of the first Test against South Africa on Sunday, cheering the dismissal of their own captain Shan Masood because it meant fan-favourite Babar Azam would be next at the crease. Masood scored 76 runs in a 161-run second wicket partnership with Imam ul Haq, who made 93. The captain was given out leg before wicket to Prenelan Subrayan in the second session. When Masood opted for a DRS review, the crowd surprisingly cheered as the big screen confirmed the umpire’s original decision, sending him back to the pavilion. The stadium erupted in applause as former captain Babar Azam walked in to bat, though he would only manage 23 runs before falling shortly after tea.”Someone needs to remind the crowd you don’t do this with your captain,” remarked South African commentator Shaun Pollock, expressing his amazement at the crowd’s reaction.Click here to watch the viral video of Pakistan crowd’s reactionThe Pakistan Cricket Board had offered free entry to several enclosures to attract more spectators to the match.Despite the free entry initiative, most of the enclosures remained empty, though there was a sizeable crowd present in the stadium.Pakistan posted 313-5 on day one of the first Test against South Africa in Lahore, led by Imam-ul-Haqâ€s brilliant 93 and Shan Masoodâ€s 76. After a strong 161-run stand, Pakistan slumped from 163-1 to 199-5 as spinners Senuran Muthusamy and Simon Harmer triggered a collapse. Mohammad Rizwan (62 not out) and Salman Agha (52 not out) then steadied the innings with an unbroken 114-run partnership on a spin-friendly pitch. Haq, returning to Test cricket after 2023, said Pakistan aimed to surpass 400. South Africaâ€s bowlers fought back but missed key chances, with Harmer expecting more spin on day two of the World Test Championship fixture.
Gautam Gambhir (Screengrab) Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir could barely contain himself. In the closing moments of the Asia Cup 2025 final between India and Pakistan, the former India opener went wild as Tilak Varma launched Haris Rauf for a towering six in the final over. The blow all but sealed Indiaâ€s victory, and Gambhirâ€s table-thumping celebration became as much a part of the highlight reel as the shot itself. It was the 19.2 over, India needing just eight runs from five deliveries. Rauf banged one in short, but Tilak was ready. He rocked back, swung cleanly, and sent the ball soaring over the ropes for an 80-meter maximum. As the Dubai International Stadium erupted, cameras cut to Gambhir, who pounded the commentary desk with both hands, his trademark intensity spilling over. For fans, it was a moment that encapsulated the passion of India-Pakistan cricket — both on and off the field.Click here to watch Gautam Gambhir’s reaction and banging on the table hereIndiaâ€s chase of 147 had been anything but straightforward. The defending champions slumped to 20/3 in the powerplay, losing Abhishek Sharma early and feeling the heat of Pakistanâ€s pace battery. But Tilak Varma stood tall.Calm under pressure, the left-hander compiled an unbeaten 69, anchoring the innings and counterpunching with flair. He found an able partner in Shivam Dube, whose 33-run knock steadied nerves and built the platform for the finish.Earlier, Pakistan had squandered a flying start. At 113/1, they looked poised for a big total, with Sahibzada Farhan (57) and Fakhar Zaman (46) setting the tone. But once Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav got into the act, wickets tumbled. Kuldeepâ€s 4/30, including a decisive triple-strike in the 17th over, broke the back of Pakistanâ€s innings, restricting them to 146 all out.Indiaâ€s five-wicket win handed them a record ninth Asia Cup title. Yet, beyond the statistics, what fans will remember is Gambhirâ€s unfiltered joy.
Naomi breaks her silence with a pregnancy update amidst WWE hiatus.
In August this year, Naomi was set to defend the Women’s World Championship against Stephanie Vaquer at Clash in Paris. However, the champion had to vacate the title after announcing her pregnancy on the August 18 episode of Monday Night RAW.
Despite her absence, fans still feel the presence of Naomi through her social media. Now, a month after her pregnancy announcement, the former champion shared an ultrasound video of her and Jimmy Uso’s baby. Hilariously, the WWE star shares that although she is currently inactive, she is still being kicked.

Since her absence, the Women’s World Champion was briefly vacated before Wrestlepalooza. At the Premium Live Event, Stephanie Vaquer clashed with IYO SKY and won the title. Although The Glow congratulated the new champion, in her own way, she demanded that Vaquer send her the name plates.
Naomi And Jimmy Uso Had Intimate Pregnancy Struggles
As it turns out, The Glow’s pregnancy is much more important for her, Jimmy Uso, and the rest of their family. Just moments after announcing her WWE hiatus, the RAW star also revealed that her medical history has affected her pregnancy.
In an episode of Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? podcast, Naomi shared that earlier in her and Jimmy’s relationship, she had an oophorectomy, which removed her ovary, and it was just one of the few surgeries she had.
You gotta understand the whole picture, the medical history, because I really havenâ€t, Iâ€ve talked about it briefly, but I havenâ€t really gone into it. So, earlier in our relationship, probably like before, before I debuted as a Funkodactyl, I had an ophorectomy, which is the removal of my right ovary. Early in my career, 2020, we went through another major surgery, which was a myomasectomy…..that is removal of fibroids, I had tons, and big ones.â€

An interesting rule from Vince McMahon’s recent birthday gathering was disclosed by one of the attendees.
McMahon celebrated his 80th birthday at a private party at Waverly Inn in New York City. Some of the notable guests were John Cena, The Undertaker, Shane McMahon, Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler, and Theodore Long, among others.
A photo was shared by Lawler on social media, which included himself, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Titus O’Neil, Maryse, and The Miz. However, he was asked to delete the post for privacy purposes.
Wrestling veteran, Sgt. Slaughter, was also one of the personalities who went to New York City to celebrate the former WWE Chairman’s birthday. During his interview with Bill Apter on Sportskeeda WrestleBinge, Slaughter recalled how Vince McMahon opened up the festivities in a grand way.
While the moment was great, the WWE Hall of Famer revealed that no cellphones were allowed, as there were designated cameras assigned to take pictures. He added that the guests would only be able to use their phones by going outside or leaving the room to contact someone, especially if it was important.
Nobody was allowed to have cellphone. You either had to leave them in your room or check them at the door when you came in. And, if you needed to call someone, you’d have to go outside and do it. Nobody was allowed to take pictures. They had cameras there for their purposes but nobody was allowed to have a cellphone out and take pictures,” Slaughter said.

Vince McMahon Introduced His Current Girlfriend to The Godfather
Charles Wright, also known as The Godfather, was also invited to the 80th birthday party of Vince McMahon. They arrived together coincidentally, and upon seeing each other, the former WWE Chairman let the 64-year-old know that he was one of his true friends, along with the rest of the attendees.
Wright then shared that McMahon introduced him to his new girlfriend.
