LOS ANGELES — Cal State LA’s women’s volleyball team worked extra once again Friday and picked up an exciting five-set win over Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles rallied again from a 2-1 sets deficit and roared back to beat the Coyotes, 25-20, 22-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-12 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in University Gym. Cal State LA (7-3, 3-0 CCAA) has already been involved in six five-set matches, including three of their past four contests. The Golden Eagles are now 5-1 in five-set matches and trailed 2-1 after three sets in all of them.
Samarah DaCoud had 15 kills and 19 digs to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures. Rebecca Topete had the best match of her Cal State LA career and had a career-high 12 kills, two digs and two blocks. Zuhal Cetin had 11 kills and 14 digs.
Kisa Sagiao had a team-high 11 kills for Cal State San Bernardino (7-3, 2-1 CCAA), while Kacie Pedersen had 10 kills and 12 digs.Â
Juliana Speiski had 15 digs and three service aces for the Golden Eagles, while Arielle Chandler had 25 set assists, four aces and 10 digs.
Cal State LA had a narrow 54-53 edge in kills and each team had 15 blocks. Cal State San Bernardino hit at a .154 percentage, while Cal State LA hit at a .129 clip. Cal State LA had eight service aces and four errors, while Cal State San Bernardino had five aces and 12 errors, including four in a row during the fifth set.
The Golden Eagles got off to a good start and took the opening set, 25-20. Kills by Cetin and DaCoud gave them a 23-17 lead and they scored their final two points off service errors.
The Coyotes, though, took over the next two sets, claiming 25-22 and 25-19 decisions, to take a 2-1 lead. Cal State LA, though, jumped out to a 21-10 lead after consecutive kills from Topete, DaCoud, Cetin, Mariana Alvarado and Topete again. A kill by Ayjah Landers and a bad set ultimately closed out the set and evened the match.
The fifth set swung in Cal State LA’s favor after a 4-0 spurt broke an 8-8 tie. A service error by the Coyotes, a block by Alvarado and DaCoud, a kill by DaCoud and an ace by Speiski gave the Golden Eagles a 12-8 lead. Cal State San Bernardino closed to within 13-12, but kills by Landers and Cetin ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action at home on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match against Cal State East Bay.
