The Columbus Blue Jacketsare on the road to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at Scotiabank Arena.

The Maple Leafs come into this game sitting at 9-9-2 with 20 points. They’ve gone 4-5-1 in their last 10 and are 1-4-1 in their last 6 games. Not exactly what you expect to see out of the Maple Leafs, but then again, this entire season has been wacky around the league. They also currently sit 7th in the Atlantic Division and 15th in the East. I know, mind blown right?

Everyone knew when Mitch Marner bolted for Vegas that they’d have a tough time replacing those 100 points, but I don’t think anyone expected this. There are some mitigating circumstances though. Auston Matthews, Scott Laughton, Chris Tanev, Brandon Carlo, and Anthony Stolarz are all on IR, with Matthew Knies and Nicolas Roy also out. This is not an ideal situation for a team always expected to compete for a Stanley Cup.

With all that being said, the Blue Jackets won’t feel sorry for them, as they’re dealing with injuries of their own. The Blue Jackets have historically played well in Toronto and will be looking to get back to winning and earn some points in this wacky Eastern Conference.

The CBJ currently sits 5th in the Metro, 10th in the East, and 20th in the league.

Blue Jackets Stats

  • Power Play – 17.4% – 22nd in NHL

  • Penalty Kill – 72.0% – 28th in NHL

  • Goals For – 59 – 18th in NHL

  • Goals Against – 64 – 23rd in NHL

Maple Leafs Stats

Series History vs. The Maple Leafs

  • Columbus is 22-20-1 all-time, and 12-9-1 on the road vs. Toronto.

  • The Blue Jackets are 12-6 inside Scotiabank Arena in the last 18 games.

  • The CBJ went 2-1 vs. the Leafs last season.

Who To Watch For The Maple Leafs

  • John Tavares leads the Leafs with 11 goals.

  • William Nylander leads the team with 18 assists and 27 points.

  • Goalie Joseph Woll is 1-1 with a SV% of .934. He last played on November 18 and won.

  • Dennis Hildeby is 2-0-2 with a SV% of .904.

It was a step in the right direction, just not the leap the Montreal Canadiens were hoping for.

But thatâ€s the thing about deep funks and losing streaks — you donâ€t just jump out of them; you dig your way out one foot at a time.

And so it made sense that when the cameras hit Montrealâ€s room, after Kirill Marchenko scored his fourth goal on his fourth shootout attempt of the season and Jet Greaves made the stop on Ivan Demidov that secured a 4-3 win for the Columbus Blue Jackets, they captured Canadiens players in relatively good spirits.

“I thought we played well tonight,†Josh Anderson, the former Blue Jacket who scored one of two third-period goals to get the Canadiens back into the game from down 3-1, told reporters at Nationwide Arena. He was right.

Down Patrik Laine, Kirby Dach, Alex Newhook and Kaiden Guhle — four regulars out long-term — the Canadiens controlled play for most of the game.

They withstood the Blue Jackets’ charge in the opening minutes and took over the second half of the first period. From down 1-0, they connected on the type of play theyâ€d regularly botched in three straight losses prior to this one, with Juraj Slafkovsky feeding Ivan Demidov, who hit Mike Matheson on a high-slot cycle before Matheson crossed up Yegor Chinakov and Sean Monahan to find teammate Oliver Kapanen in the middle of the slot for a goal to the roof of Greaves†net early in the second period. And from down 3-1 in the third, they produced shot attempts at a two-to-one ratio, dominated scoring chances 12-3, and found the back of the net by creating chaos and traffic in front of it.

The Canadiens lost five of six games coming into this one not doing enough of that stuff, and they had every reason to feel dejected after outshooting the Blue Jackets 6-0 in overtime and getting beat in a breakaway competition in the end.

But the step they took was towards resembling their better selves, and it was important they recognized it so they can finally take the one thatâ€ll get them out of this hole.

“There were a lot of things we did tonight that were very encouraging,†said Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis. “I liked our collective game, we didnâ€t give up much, and in the third we looked like ourselves. The only disappointing thing tonight was not getting the result. We played to our standard.â€

“Weâ€re chasing standards, not the scoreboard,†he added moments later. “Itâ€ll take care of itself if we bring those intentions and play to the standard, and weâ€ll be fine.â€

At 10-6-3 on the season, tied with Detroit for the best points percentage (.605) in an extremely competitive Atlantic Division (and tied with them for the fourth-best points percentage in the league), the Canadiens already are fine.

Had they come into Columbus and played well beneath the standard they set for themselves through a 9-3-0 start to the season, it wouldâ€ve been a step towards being anything but fine, no matter the result.

Things couldnâ€t continue the way they went in a 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, a 7-0 loss to the Dallas Stars and a 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins last week.

Not that the Canadiens were as bad as the combined scoreline suggested. They just werenâ€t nearly good enough, and the process reflected it.

The process looked different enough against the Blue Jackets for the Canadiens to rightfully believe they took a step in the right direction.

That step was a step towards each other, towards leaning more on the collective game in the absence of the injured. It was a step taken thanks to some line juggling and strategy tweaks that sparked some much-needed offence. And that step found solid ground with the cohesion the Canadiens found at the most critical point in the game—on their only man-advantage, with 1:51 remaining.

It didnâ€t happen on a power play seeking redemption after 17 straight misses, including seven against Boston, and thatâ€s because the Canadiens didnâ€t get a single power-play opportunity against Columbus.

But they pulled goaltender Jakub Dobes with just under two minutes remaining in regulation, went six-on-five, and everyone did their job away from the puck to enable Lane Hutson to do his with it.

Hutsonâ€s second goal of the season, scored at 18:41 of the third period, extended momentum the Canadiens came so close to capitalizing on in overtime.

“Thought we gave ourselves a really good chance to win,†said Nick Suzuki afterwards.

He talked about Hutson and the other defencemen getting pucks to the net, about the forwards getting themselves there, and about how the Canadiens were generally in control.

Control was what they hadnâ€t particularly had over the last two weeks of losing hockey, so the most important thing for them was to start wrestling it back.

Now itâ€ll be critical to keep it against the Washington Capitals Thursday. Itâ€s the step thatâ€ll lead the Canadiens back to the win column.

The Columbus Blue Jacketsare at home tonight to face the New York Rangers.

The Blue Jackets welcome the best road team in the NHL into NWA tonight, so this won’t be an easy game at all.

The Rangers are 8-1-1 on the road this season, with their only regulation loss coming at the hands of the lowly Calgary Flames back on October 26th. Before that, they suffered an overtime loss to Toronto on October 16th. That makes five wins straight on the road for the Rangers.

The Blue Jackets are coming off a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. The win marked their second straight after losing 4 in a row on a western Canada trip. The schedule doesn’t get any easier, so they need to play the way they know how and score some goals to stay in the insane Metro Division race.

The Columbus Blue Jacketsare at home tonight to face the Edmonton Oilers at Nationwide Arena.

The Blue Jackets will have one thing on their mind tonight – Revenge. The good news for Columbus is that they have played Edmonton very tough at home in their history, going 18-13-3-1 inside the friendly confines of Nationwide Arena. The other good news is that Edmonton played last night in Philadelphia and had to go to overtime, so hopefully they’re nice and worn out.

The bad news? The Jackets lost their Captain, Boone Jenner, to an upper-body injury against Seattle on Tuesday night, and his status is uncertain. The fact that the PR team announced that he wouldn’t return just a few minutes after he left the game is not a good sign. The Cleveland Monsters also called up forward Chongmin Lee from the ECHL’s Bloomington Bison on Wednesday night, which means the CBJ might call up an extra forward before tonight’s game.

The Blue Jackets currently sit 8th in the Metro, 14th in the East, and 26th in the league.

The Blue Jackets host the New Jersey Devils at Nationwide Arena tonight in the home opener.

The home opener for Columbus is always a great event. Before, during, and after the game is always a fun time in the arena district. I encourage you to attend.

Now for the game. The Blue Jackets seem to always have a hard time winning against the Devils, so this one could be tough. The CBJ are coming in off a crazy game in Minnesota, where they gave up four power play goals and took 8, yes 8, penalties. That cannot happen again if they stand a chance against the NJD.

The Devils come into Columbus having beaten the Tampa Bay Lightning by a score of 5-3 on Saturday. Connor Brown scored a pair of goals in the win. Jacob Markstrom has started both games for New Jersey so far and expect him to get the nod in favor of Jake Allen tonight.

CBJ defenseman Erik Gudbranson took a hard shot from Marcus Foligno that sent him from the game on Saturday night. We’ll find out later if he can go, or if Jake Christiansen will need to step in.

Blue Jackets Stats

  • Power Play – 25% – 9th in NHL
  • Penalty Kill – 58.3% – 30th in NHL

ST. PAUL, Minn – In his second career regular season game, Minnesota Wild defenseman Zeev Buium recorded his first career NHL goal on the power play in the third period.

The Wild had four power-play goals in a 7-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Buium had made a few mistakes on the power play earlier in the game like entering the zone and miss passes but he continued to get more comfortable as the game went on and picked up two points.

On the Wild’s seventh power play of the game, Buium picked up his first NHL goal off a nice feed from Joel Eriksson Ek, who had two assists on the power play in the loss.

Buium, 19, was the Wild’s 12th overall pick from the 2024 NHL Draft. He debuted in the playoffs for the Wild last year and had one assist in four games. It came on a Kirill Kaprizov goal.

The 6-foot defenseman added another point on the power play on Kaprizov’s goal in the loss to Columbus. He has one goal and one assist on the year, all on the power play.

Dean Kukan – 2015-2022 – Kukan is undrafted out of Volketswil, Switzerland.

Dean Kukan made his NHL debut in March of 2016 after playing the majority of the season with the Lake Erie Monsters. After playing in 8 games near the end of the season, he was sent back to Lake Erie and would help the Monsters win their first-ever Calder Cup. He had 5 points in 17 playoff games.

Kukan would bounce up and down between Columbus and Cleveland until 2022. He would play a total of 153 games for the CBJ and total 30 points. Where he excelled was in the minors, though. He played in 142 games for Lake Erie/Cleveland and totaled 59 points as a fairly skilled two-way defenseman.

After the 2022 season, Kukan made the decision to return to Europe. He returned to his home country of Switzerland to play for his original club, the ZSC Lions, on a five-year contract.

Kukan is also routinely chosen to represent the Swiss in international competitions. He played in the 2025 IIHF Worlds where he scored 9 points in 10 games.
