BROSSARD, Que. — A trip down memory lane Cole Caufield would prefer you not take: From Oct. 9-31 last year, when he scored 10 goals through the first 11 games of the season.

Did you forget he had more in that period than heâ€s collected through the first 11 games of this season?

Caufield didnâ€t.

But he also didnâ€t forget the feeling he had back then — and how different it was from what heâ€s feeling right now. The Wisconsonite may have been filling the net, but to say he was feeling unfulfilled by his all-around game would be understating it.

Caufield was downright frustrated with it, and he was especially disappointed by its impact on the Canadiens†4-6-1 start to the season.

But the Canadiens are 8-3-0 right now, and Caufieldâ€s all-around play is a huge part of that.

The nine goals have certainly helped. As colleague Jonathan Bernier of Le Journal de Montreal noted, four of them have given the Canadiens a lead, two of them have tied games, and the other three were scored in overtime.

But the 24-year-old is doing so much more than just scoring goals to help his team.

“My defensive side of the game has been a lot better,†Caufield said after practice Thursday. “I think, as a line, weâ€ve come a long way. All three of us are doing our own thing but coming together to make it work. I think weâ€re winning more battles and creating a lot more off the rush. Iâ€m winning more battles in the o-zone. I think that leads to more touches which helps a lot with scoring chances.â€

It’s what Caufield has been working on for three-plus years with Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis.

Itâ€s not what they began working on immediately, though.

As St. Louis explained, there was a different priority then, when the Canadiens were playing out the string of a losing season and Caufield was stuck on one goal through 30 games and feeling miserable.

“When I took the job (in February 2022) there was 30-something games left,†said St. Louis. “I didnâ€t teach Cole how to play defence, I just played Cole. We talked offence a lot because, again, at the time, like with the rest of the team and the players, I needed to bring some enthusiasm (for him). The morale was really low. I think how you do that is talk about offence, because thatâ€s a fun part of the game.Â

“So, we got Cole in a good place mentally. He scored a lot of goals. And I felt like at that point he was ready to embark on the next chapter. When somebodyâ€s in a good place mentally, I feel like thatâ€s when you can do the most teaching. So, to me, it was building the relationship, lift his spirit, then teach.â€

The lessons took some time to pay off with consistency.

Caufield had 26 goals, 36 points and finished minus-10 through 46 games for a rebuilding Canadiens team in 2022-23. He was stronger all-around, but still a work in progress. He also played a lot of those games with a busted shoulder and then stopped to have season-ending surgery.

You could see Caufieldâ€s game really start to round out more the following season. With the Canadiens slowly building towards becoming more competitive, he had 28 goals and 65 points and finished a respectable minus-4.

Then Caufield had a career-high 37 goals and 70 points and finished plus-9 last season. He scored a ton of those goals at the start, but much preferred the way he played in the second half.

And Caufield is particularly happy to have carried momentum from that second half into the start of this season.

With nine goals, Caufield once again has his share of the league lead. Scoring chances for the Canadiens at five-on-five are also 76-45 with him on the ice, which has as much to do with his offence as it does his urgency to play defence as soon as they lose the puck.

“Cole is playing the game,†said St. Louis. “Heâ€s understood the game demands you to do certain actions on the ice, and that from time to time the game will give you what you like to do on the ice, but you donâ€t know when thatâ€s coming. If you respect the rules at both ends of the ice, you get much more opportunity to do what you like doing. I think Cole gradually worked on that and has gotten to a place where he understands that and plays the game.â€

The work with St. Louis has helped.

The work in Michigan, during off-seasons, has also helped a lot. Caufield trains and skates regularly with a glut of American superstars there.

Quinn, Jack and Luke Hughes are the group. Zack Werenski, Jake Sanderson, Kyle Connor and Trevor Zegras, too. And then thereâ€s Matty Beniers, Brendan Brisson, Andrew Copp and Tyler Motte, amongst other players who are “in and out,†according to Caufield.

“The sessions always start off pretty much the same, just getting your feet moving,†he said. “A lot of turns, a lot of speed stuff, a lot of moving, and a lot of shooting. Weâ€ve got Connor Hellebuyck and Scott Wedgewood in net, so that helps a lot and goes a long way.

“And then we work on game-like situations and finish with small games or battle drills.â€

When asked who he borrows from most out of the group, Caufield points to Connor, whoâ€s amassed 184 goals — second only to Auston Matthews among Americans — since the 2019-20 season (which was Caufieldâ€s first in the NHL).

“I would say just his attention to detail, and his ways of scoring are different every time,†Caufield adds. “He could score off the rush, one-timer, catch and release, just in all different ways. The way heâ€s able to do it and create for himself is pretty special, and heâ€s got a release thatâ€s pretty insane. Heâ€s able to go under the bar, and heâ€s also able to pick right under the hands, which is also something that I kind of picked up on a lot and tried to start using a little more to keep the goalies guessing. Heâ€s a really good guy to watch in drills and pick something off of to see if you can do it in games. Heâ€s a special player.â€

Caufield had potential to be one since well before he was drafted 15th overall by the Canadiens in 2019, but now he is one.

The five-foot-eight, 175-pound winger has gradually built himself into one of the most special and complete players in the league. He did it by refining his details away from the puck and focusing on winning his one-on-one battles despite almost always giving up size to his opponents.

“I think heâ€s playing bigger,†said St. Louis. “I know heâ€s a small player, but he actually plays bigger now than his size, and thatâ€s something we talked about a lot. The way Cole is going to win a battle is different than (Juraj Slafkovsky is) going to win a battle, but thereâ€s still some kind of physicality involved in it. And itâ€s not necessarily blowing people up, but you canâ€t just come in there with chopsticks and try to win a battle. Canâ€t just pick the puck out and try to get involved. You need a pick and a shovel.â€

You need a calculated — and well-timed — approach, too, said Caufield.

“Itâ€s body positioning early and timing when to get under a stick. The stick battles are even more important.†he explained. “You almost have to get in there at the same time and then get out. And thereâ€s times when you canâ€t win a battle if youâ€re already in there, so timing is key. Thereâ€s other times when you have to try to win a battle youâ€re not likely to win because of timing or positioning, but you canâ€t win it if you donâ€t try.â€

Caufield consistently tries, though, and he consistently wins.

Itâ€s a big part of why the Canadiens are winning more consistently and itâ€s whatâ€s made him much happier than just scoring goals at the start of the season.

Chelsea have been forced to get used to life without Cole Palmer during an injury-hit start to the season for the forward.

The England star has missed the Blues’ past eight games since being withdrawn in the first half of the 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on September 20.

That miserable trip to Old Trafford was one of just four appearances this season for Palmer, who is ranked at no.5 in FourFourTwo’s list of the best attacking midfielders in the world right now.

He was sidelined for almost a month after starting Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, before playing three times in a week that culminated in the defeat by United.

Having initially hoped Palmer would be back soon after Chelsea returned to Premier League action following this month’s international break, Blues head coach Enzo Maresca is now not expecting him back until December.

“Unfortunately, he needs to be out probably six more weeks,” the Italian said on October 17.

“Yes, absolutely [he still doesn’t need surgery]. We try just to protect Cole as much as we can and the most important thing is that.”

Chelsea have been in good form in Palmer’s absence, winning six and losing two of their eight games without the 23-year-old.

They beat Wolves 4-3 in a roller-coaster Carabao Cup fourth round clash on Wednesday night, although a 2-1 home defeat by Sunderland last Saturday saw them end the weekend ninth in the Premier League.

Palmer’s extended injury absence is especially bad timing for the Manchester City youth product with next summer’s World Cup on the horizon.

The forward hasn’t played for his country since June and his first chance to return to the national set-up now won’t come until March – the final international break before head coach Thomas Tuchel names his squad for the tournament.

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer is still continuing to be frustrated by injury setbacks.

The England international has not played for Enzo Maresca’s side since a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United on September 20, with Robert Sanchez sent off early in that contest.

Next up for Maresca’s side is a home clash with Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, as they look to continue their impressive form as of late.

Despite having already spent a lengthy period on the sidelines, the recent communications coming out of Stamford Bridge suggest Palmer is set for another six weeks out.

It is a persistent thigh injury that continues to trouble the England star, with Palmer and Chelsea keen to get the issues resolved fully before the 2026 World Cup next year.

“I was wrong,” Maresca told a news conference on October 17. “Unfortunately, he needs to be out probably six more weeks. So, yes, this is the update.

“We try to protect Cole as much as we can,” Maresca said. “The most important thing is [that] when he comes back, he is fully fit.

“The medical staff are not magicians. We hope six weeks are enough. We need to see it step-by-step. For sure, he’s going to be OK. He looks relaxed. He has tried to recover from the injury and is doing all the therapy.”

Reinforcements could be arriving sooner than expected for the Winnipeg Jets.

Forward Cole Perfetti is ahead of schedule in his injury rehab and is targeting a mid-November return, head coach Scott Arniel said on Monday, per Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press.

Meanwhile, captain Adam Lowry is trending toward a return around the end of October or early November. The timeline for defenceman Dylan Samberg is still being determined, Arniel said.

Perfetti, 23, suffered an ankle injury during the team’s pre-season finale earlier in October and was ruled out on a week-to-week basis.

He is entering his fifth season with the club after being selected 10th overall in the 2020 draft. Over 222 career games, Perfetti owns 125 points (47 goals, 78 assists).

Lowry, 32, had hip surgery in May just 10 days after Winnipeg was eliminated from the playoffs.

He played in all 13 of Winnipeg’s playoff games and scored the biggest goal of the Jets’ season when he fired home the double-OT winner during Game 7 of the team’s first-round series against the St. Louis Blues.

A career-long Jet since being drafted in the third round (67th overall) in 2011, Lowry posted 16 goals and 18 assists in 73 regular-season games last season before adding four more tallies in the playoffs.

Samberg, 26, broke his wrist during the pre-season and was given a six-to-eight week timeline as of late September.

Despite the key absences, Winnipeg has begun its Presidents’ Trophy defence strongly with a 4-1-0 record through five games.

The Jets return to action Monday with a road game against the Calgary Flames.

WWE brought an Aussie-style celebration to the Crown Jewel kickoff show—and it ended with a shoey party fans didnâ€t see coming.

Grayson Waller kicked things off by hitting the stage in Perth, Australia with cans of beer in hand, and it didnâ€t take long to see where this was going. Waller and fellow Australian Rhea Ripley were clearly ready for a shoey, and the crowd knew it too.

But the celebration didnâ€t stop there. Waller pulled out a third can and turned to IYO SKY, asking if she wanted to join them. The Genius of the Sky didnâ€t hesitate, stepping up and joining the impromptu beer-soaked moment to the crowdâ€s delight.

Then came the curveball. Waller pulled out one more can and asked the crowd who should join next. The fans chanted for Michael Cole. Waller asked him directly, and Cole replied with a grin that heâ€d never turn down a beer.

Rhea, IYO, and Waller all did their shoeys like pros, pouring the beer into their shoes and chugging it. Cole opted to skip the footwear and just drank straight from the can—but the crowd still popped huge for the whole segment, closing the kickoff show on a high note.

The celebration wasnâ€t just entertaining—it was a perfect example of WWEâ€s connection with international crowds. With Ripley and Waller proudly repping their home country and IYO SKY and Michael Cole joining in, the moment captured exactly what WWE does best: creating unforgettable memories, even before the first bell rings.

What did you think of the shoey moment at Crown Jewel? Should WWE do more regional celebrations like this? Let us know in the comments and drop your take on who shouldâ€ve joined next.

Adam Cole’s love of gaming is no secret, and now the AEW star has joined a new video game outside of the wrestling world. Cole has provided his voice for a new game ‘Curiosity’ from DarkBear Studios. The game is now available on Steamand Steam Deck and is currently on offer for a limited time.

From DarkBear Studios:

“In Curiosity, players embody a small but determined cat on a perilous climb home. Every leap requires precision, patience, and persistence: one mistake can send you tumbling down. With nine lives to spare (and consequences for losing them all), players must master every jump, uncover mysterious lore, and survive a journey thatâ€s as emotional as it is demanding.

“Drawing inspiration from titles like Only Up and Getting Over It, Curiosity offers a modern evolution of the genre: combining the viral tension of vertical climbing games with a rich story; a hand-crafted world, and traditional platforming elements like secrets, collectibles, checkpoints, and even potential skips for the most daring players.”

Cole’s voice acting role comes amid his latest injury in AEW. In July, Cole was forced to vacate the TNT Championship due to another concussion. At All In: Texas, Cole admitted that he is uncertain about his pro-wrestling future and the wrestling world shared messages of support for the AEW star.

It remains to be seen whether Cole returns to the ring, but Curiosity shows that there are opportunities for him outside of the squared circle. We at SEScoops are continuing to wish Cole the very best on his recovery.

    • One of the last questions before the 24-hour notice was given, [Kross] asked where I stood in all these contract negotiations. And they said, ‘We’ll get to her once we’re done with you,’ which I took as them using me as leverage against him. I do feel like if he agreed within the 24 hours that they would have offered me something, would it have been the same amount as it was before? Would it have been less? I don’t know. But all in all, it felt like a massive, massive red flag, and I did feel like it did come off a bit misogynistic, because originally I was hired before [Kross], and the idea that I have no value without him, and it’s only determined by whether or not he signs, that came off as very misogynistic to me.

The Winnipeg Jets suffered two blows to their starting lineup in their final pre-season tilt.

Defenceman Dylan DeMelo exited in the first period, before forward Cole Perfetti left at the end of the second frame during a game against the Calgary Flames on Friday night.

DeMelo was seen walking down the tunnel to the dressing room after taking a stick up high from Blake Coleman and did not return for the start of the second or third periods.

Perfetti also did not return for the beginning of the third, after recording 8:29 of ice time over the first two frames. His last shift came as time expired for in the second period.

Jets head coach Scott Arniel said on the 680CJOB post-game show that Perfetti has a lower-body injury that “doesnâ€t look great” at first glance. The centre will be re-evaluated.

DeMelo, 32, is set to enter his 11th NHL season and seventh with Winnipeg. He scored three goals and added 16 assists while playing in all 82 games for the Jets in 2024-25. The blue-liner hasn’t missed a game for two consecutive seasons.

Perfetti is entering his fifth season with the club after they selected him 10th overall in 2020. The 23-year-old forward has 125 points (47 goals, 78 assists) in 222 career games.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Cole Schwindt was a player the Florida Panthers reluctantly included in the trade that brought them Matthew Tkachuk from Calgary three years ago.

And now, the Panthers brought Schwindt back.

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions claimed Schwindt off waivers Friday — a move that, somewhat ironically, figures to help them get through playing without Tkachuk for the first few weeks of the season.

“We had him before and we know what he can do,” Florida president of hockey operations and general manager Bill Zito said. “There’s a lot of upside. It’s a great opportunity for him.”

Schwindt — who was in the deal that sent Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar and draft capital to the Flames for Tkachuk in 2022 — spent last season with Vegas, playing in 42 games and finishing with a goal and seven assists. He played in three games with Florida in 2021-22 and four games with Calgary in 2023-24, never registering a point in either of those stops.

But with Tkachuk out until probably December, and with captain Aleksander Barkov expected to miss most if not the entire season with torn knee ligaments, Florida needed to replenish its depth. Schwindt was placed on waivers Thursday by Vegas and the Panthers won the claim.

Schwindt’s brother, Kai Schwindt, is also part of the Panthers organization. Kai Schwindt was in camp with the team this fall and was assigned earlier this week to Florida’s AHL affiliate in Charlotte.

JACKSON, Miss. — Sam Ryder played bogey-free and Danny Walker finished with a pair of birdies, each posting a 7-under 65 to join a four-way tie at the top Thursday at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Eric Cole managed 10 birdies, which helped offset a double bogey from the trees late in the round, and Garrick Higgo continued to show strides since a torn labrum slowed his progress after a win earlier this year. They were also at 65.

Ryder is at No. 110 in the FedEx Cup standings, while Walker is at No. 104. The Sanderson Farms Championship is part of the Fall Series where players who did not reach the PGA Tour’s postseason have to finish in the top 100 to keep their full cards.

“I’m very aware where I’m at. You know it all year,” Ryder said. “You get a text every single week that tells you exactly where you are on FedEx. You can’t hide from it. But it doesn’t dictate my schedule. If I was in a better position, I would still like to think that I would be working hard on my game and trying to win and check other boxes.

“Right now, I’m trying to play for my status but still trying to play for bigger goals, too.”

Walker tied for sixth in the Players Championship, but he showed up at the Country Club of Jackson having missed eight straight cuts to fall out of the top 100.

He bounced back from a soft bogey on the 15th to finish with two straight birdies. Much like Ryder, he’s trying not to get wrapped up in scores and position.

“It’s really hard when you’ve missed a bunch of cuts to not go into a week and all you’re thinking about is hoping you make the cut, and that’s kind of where it got to,” Walker said. “When all you’re thinking about is results … it really got in my head, and I felt like going into this week I finally got in a place where I just wasn’t really worried about that.”

He had two weeks off because of the Ryder Cup and worked hard at learning to trust his game and see where it takes him.

NCAA champion Michael La Sasso was chasing the leaders until he was assessed a two-shot penalty after his par on the sixth hole. The PGA Tour said he violated Rule 8.1a for improving conditions of the shot he was playing.

It was not clear what he did. A tour official said La Sasso, who is playing on a sponsor exemption, declined to speak to the media.

Mac Meissner (No. 86 in the standings) and defending champion Kevin Yu were at 66. Yu won last year to earn a spot in the Masters. Winners of Fall Series events no longer get an automatic invitation to Augusta National.

Rasmus Hojgaard was at 69, coming straight from New York and Ryder Cup victory in his debut for Team Europe. He is at No 87 and now turns his attention toward keeping his card.

“Still a bit low on energy, so I’m going to manage myself the next couple days and hopefully restore some of it,” Hojgaard said.
