Browsing: clubs

Professional golfers get access to the latest and greatest technology every season, but not every pro chooses to add the new, shiny toys to the bag.
Some, like Brooks Koepka, have found the club that fits their swing and their game, and they are going to hit them until they have to make a change.
For Koepka, the five-time major champion still games a Nike Vaporfly 3-iron, which is no longer in production, and a TaylorMade M2 HL 3-wood, which hit the market around a decade ago.
In an interview with Today’s Golfer at the Dunhill Links Championship last week, Koepka explained why he keeps those two clubs in the bag instead of opting for newer technology.
Koepka’s Nike 3-iron
While some players might opt for a 5-wood for more length, Koepka has stuck with the Nike Vaporfly 3-iron because of his trust in its ball flight and the negligible difference between it and the 5-wood.
While the Vaporfly is no longer in production, Koepka has some spares in his garage. He recently added a new Vaporfly after the face of his old one caved in during the Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
“I’m not a tinkerer,” Koepka told Today’s Golfer.“I don’t play around with different options. I’ve tried throwing a 5-wood in but the ball flight just doesn’t look right to me. I don’t know why. I’m not at the age where I need a little extra help with extra woods, which is lucky, but maybe in probably five or six years, I’ll definitely take all the help I can get. That 3-iron has been my Old Faithful. I know the flight it should be, the original one actually caved in on 18 at Portrush this year. Luckily I wasn’t playing Saturday or Sunday so I didn’t have to go without a club. But it’s been crazy, I’ve been carrying the backup around for a couple of months, sort of knowing it was at the end and it just happened to now make its way to the front of the bag.”
Brooks’ 3-wood
As for Koepka’s TaylorMade M2 HL 3-wood, it has become a bag staple because he has been unable to recreate the feel with other 3-woods. To Koepka, the 3-wood is the most difficult club in the bag to get fit into. Once you do, don’t move on unless it’s necessary.
“I think the 3-wood is the toughest club to even get fitted for,” Koepka said. “I haven’t really ever found anything where it sits down quite right in the fairway or off the tee. The flight that I see with this one, I haven’t found just anything where it’s better. I think this one is going on maybe 10, 11, maybe 12 years now, but it’s crazy, like I said, I don’t tinker, so when I find something that works, I’ll keep going with it.
“You put in a new shaft occasionally. I don’t change those, I think I’ve had every shaft in this bag for a long time and occasionally just the wear from the little wear marks on the bag when the bag gets a little done in, so you have to change shafts but not the heads.”
“When something works, I keep going with it.”
As my colleague Jack Hirsch noted, this is an approach that recent Sanderson Farms winner Steven Fisk also uses.
All of the clubs in Fisk’s bag, except for his Mizuno ST-Z 230 driver and his Vokey SM10 lob wedge, are from the early part of the 2020s, including his Mizuno MP-20 irons and T-22 wedges and his Odyssey White Hot OG Rossie putter.
We’ve seen Rory McIlroy pay almost $1000 for an Uber to bring him his old woods, his TaylorMade Qi10s, for the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. McIlroy played the first three rounds with the new driver and fairway woods, from the Qi35 line, but wanted to go back to the clubs he felt more comfortable with.
Even if it’s not the newest or shiniest club, when you find something that fits your game, stick with it. There’s no need to tinker if you don’t have to.

TRENDING RUMORS
– Manchester United are braced for bids from clubs in Saudi Arabia for captain Bruno Fernandes in January, according to the Manchester Evening News. The outlet’s sources suggest Bruno will be offered more than double his salary from SPL clubs once the transfer window reopens. The 31-year-old was the subject of a reported £100 million bid from Al Hilal back in the summer, which was rejected by Man United. However, after a slow start to the new season, the club could now be keen to cash in on their star midfielder — and use any funds raised to finance an offer for a long-time target.
– Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic is attracting interest from a host of European clubs, according to Bild. Manchester City are said to be among his admirers, as they line up a long-term replacement for 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, while Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen. Pavlovic, 21, has played 12 times for Bayern this season, and is a Germany international with five caps to his name. With a contract that runs until June 2029, he won’t be easy to prise away from the Bundesliga champions.

You’ve heard this on this platform before, but there are no “bests” in terms of golf clubs anymore.
On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-host Johnny Wunder explained why ranking golf clubs by “what’s the best” simply isn’t useful.
“It’s a snapshot in time and it doesn’t— it’s not good for the golfers to rank golf clubs, especially these days,” Wunder said. “Now, 50 years ago, an argument would have been made, because there were bangers, there were losers, there were people that just had bad ideas.
“These days, even the bad ideas are bangers. Like, they’re all good.”
Just about every golf club on the market can help someone accomplish a specific goal with their game. Likewise, not every golf club is going to seem “good” to everyone because it might not be designed for that specific golfer or what that golfer wants to do.

Most of these “best” lists are simply based on a few days or a week of testing with specific golfers. Not necessarily an all-encompassing sample. Even with a massive player testing effort, it’s not feasible to take into account all the possible factors that could play into whether a club works well for someone or not.
“What’s happening, though, with these hot lists is that it does give you the stigma that this one got four stars, or this one got a gold medal, or this one got this,” Wunder said. “And it’s Bob and Betsy Ross on the driving range in Arizona for two days, hitting nothing but drivers and 3-woods all day and it says nothing about them. They write on their little notes, they’ll go, this was good, this was right.
“With a different loft, with a different type of head, with a different shaft, at a different length, with a different ball. They’re not getting fit into it at all. It’s like, here’s a club, hit it, tell me what you think.”
That’s why the trick is figuring out which one is right for you and with what settings, shafts and other factors that can be determined in a fitting environment.
Here at GOLF, our goal is to help you do just that, and the best way is to get fit.
“What’s best for the golfer is more or less just encouraging them to go get fit, give them as much information as humanly possible and let them go in there,” Wunder said.
Stay tuned to GOLF’s channels in the coming months for info on 2026 gear, because we won’tbe ranking anything.

 Cleveland CBZ Full-Face Custom Wedge
The Metal That Does More
At the core of the CBZ Wedge is Z-Alloy, a revolutionary new steel formula developed exclusively by Cleveland Golf. Lighter, softer, and built for performance, Z-Alloy provides golfers with an unrivaled feel at impact. In fact, CBZ Wedges are 25% softer than the previous CBX 4 ZipCore models, while maintaining the durability and responsiveness expected from Cleveland Golf’s tour-trusted Wedges.
 Greater Forgiveness, Greater Consistency
CBZ Wedges are built with the same performance-driven DNA as the acclaimed RTZ Wedge, incorporating technologies like ZipCore, which repositions the Center of Gravity closer to the impact zone for improved MOI, control, and spin.
To further elevate performance, CBZ Wedges also feature UltiZip grooves for cleaner contact and consistent spin through turf and debris, while HydraZip face technology enhances spin in wet or challenging conditions, both optimized by loft for balanced results across the set. Finally, a redesigned Gelback TPU insert, now 94% larger, helps dampen vibrations and delivers a smoother, more responsive feel, even on mishits.
 CBZ Versatility
For an added layer of versatility, CBZ Wedges have a Full-Face design option allowing players who make inconsistent contact to receive more spin on off-center shots. For those not afraid of the occasional open-face shot, CBZ’s Full-Face hosel-to-toe grooves and extended high-toe area help maximize contact on more creative shots for more consistent spin, flight, and stopping power.
Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner says lower-league clubs “should not take too much” from top Premier League sides, amid ongoing negotiations to redistribute a share of their wealth within the EFL.
Talks over a deal to share Premier League income within the football pyramid are carrying on against a backdrop of pressure from the government as a new independent football regulator is being established.
A bill to establish the regulator became law in July and will have backstop powers to force a deal should it not be agreed.
The Premier League argues English football can govern itself, stating a regulator will have “unprecedented and untested powers to intervene in the distribution of [its] revenues” and have “a negative impact on competitiveness and investment in world class talent”.
Speaking at The Summit, part of Leaders Week London 2025, Wagner, an American investor, said: “I think the top clubs in English football have to be protected at all costs. We can’t take too much from the top clubs to support the pyramid.
“If you have a situation where the top teams are not dominant, I mean internationally, with the very best players and product, then the interest will wane – particularly from the US market which will drive interest and capital flows into football.
“I love the pyramid – we have experienced a lot of it – but the top clubs that are highly successful have significant brand value and draw interest. We hope that interest will help grow the entire pyramid.”
Backed by significant US investment since 2023, Birmingham are among the richest clubs in the EFL and secured a record 111 points when earning promotion from League One to the Championship last season.
Birmingham spent £25m in League One last season, more than the rest of the division combined, according to Transfermarkt.
They are among the biggest spenders in the EFL, along with Welsh club Wrexham, who are owned by a consortium that features Hollywood duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.
Eleven of the 20 teams in the Premier League have US owners and a two-thirds majority could allow them to band together to vote through major changes in the sport, including a much-debated overseas 39th match.
Wagner is supportive of playing a match overseas in the United States, with the club having floated the idea of playing Wrexham there last season.
He said: “We have two US-owned clubs in the Championship and our matches did very well in the US when broadcast. I think we are only scratching the surface of what we can do internationally and that’s very exciting.”
The co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management also spoke extensively about Birmingham’s Sport Quarter development plans, which include a proposed multipurpose 62,000-seat stadium.
The club believe the stadium will allow Birmingham to become more of a football destination as it “doesn’t make sense” that people keep travelling to London and Manchester but skip the “second city”.
Wagner also said he would welcome Birmingham’s local rivals enjoying on-field success.
“I respect fans enjoy the misery of their crosstown rivals,” he said, “but if I was to root against Villa or Wolves in our immediate area then I am rooting against clubs in the Birmingham area and lessening the quality of Birmingham football.
“Manchester United and City are two great clubs in the same city, London have a lot of great crosstown rivals, so why wouldn’t we want that for Birmingham to increase the interest?”
Wagner also explained that he and his colleagues had no interest in multi-club ownership and that they had explored investing a minority stake in a London side but considered it overvalued before buying into Birmingham.
The Seattle Kraken have reassigned six players to their junior clubs, highlighted by 2025 first-round pick Jake O’Brien.
Among the six players are Alexis Bernier, Jakub Fibigr, Blake Fiddler, Julius Miettinen, Jake O’Brien and Will Reynolds.
Bernier will head back to the Drakkar de Baie-Comeau in the QMJHL, where he’s spent three seasons. The 19-year-old defender set a career-high in goals and points last year and will be looking to improve on those numbers when he returns from rehabbing an ACL injury.
Fibigr, a 19-year-old Czech defender, will return to the Brampton Steelheads. The Steelheads will look quite different this season after Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf and other top NHL prospects Porter Martone and Luke Misa have left the team. Fibigr will play a large role with both the Steelheads and the Czechia National Team at the world juniors.
Fiddler, a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft, is heading back to the WHL to rejoin the Edmonton Oil Kings. The 18-year-old got his first taste of NHL action last night and looked strong and poised. The right-handed defenseman has a massive frame and skates very well for his size. Another strong WHL season can go a long way for Fiddler.

Miettinen is currently recovering from an injury and did not participate in rookie camp or training camp. He’ll return to an Everett Silvertips team who are hoping for better fortune in the playoffs this year. With exceptional status defenseman Landon DuPont and 2025 first-round pick Carter Bear, the Silvertips should be among the favorites to take home the WHL championship.
O’Brien, like Fiddler, got his first opportunity at playing against NHL competition and did not look out of place. O’Brien is as smart as they come, but he is in major need of adding muscle to his 6-foot-2 frame. Another season or two of developing in the OHL with the Brantford Bulldogs will be very beneficial toward becoming an NHL-ready center.
Reynolds was a third-round pick in the most recent NHL draft and will embark on a new era of his career. The 18-year-old has spent the past season and a half with Acadie-Bathurst Titan in the QMJHL but will join the Newfoundland Regiment this year. Listed at 6-foot-3, Reynolds has appealing physical tools for a defenseman.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but Scottie Scheffler has won again on the PGA Tour. On Sunday, Scheffler tracked down Ben Griffin to win the Procore Championship, his sixth victory of the season.
The win marks No. 13 for Scheffler’s TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-Neck putter that he switched to last year. Just this season, players using a Spider putter have won 14 times on Tour, nine of those coming from Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. The last three events on the PGA Tour have been won by a Spider putter, dating back to Scheffler’s win at the BMW Championship. Tommy Fleetwood won the Tour Championship with a Spider putter as well.

Scheffler changes very little in his bag from week to week. The decision between a Srixon ZU85 3-iron and TaylorMade Qi35 7-wood is the only course-dependent club change he makes on a weekly basis. Scheffler went with the 3-iron this week, marking his fourth win with that club this season and two victories with the 7-wood.

Titleist Vokey SM10 Raw Custom Wedge
For every shot, every lie, every course, there’s a grind fit for your swing. Finding the right grind to match your swing and playing conditions will give you the best turf interaction, contact and shot performance. Master Craftsman Bob Vokey has spent decades crafting, developing and improving his tour proven grinds to fit players of all levels.
Anyone can manufacture a wedge, but it takes a master to turn a piece of high-performance technology into an instrument of creative control. Bob’s six tour-proven grinds are designed to offer maximum creativity, versatility and consistency, all meticulously developed through years of working with the best players in the world.
 PROGRESSIVE CENTER OF GRAVITY
SM9 features a progressive center of gravity (CG) throughout the lofts, which optimizes ball flight, accuracy and forgiveness. Using tapered top lines and varied hosel lengths, the Vokey R&D team has raised the height of the CG in the higher lofts, which promotes a lower, more controlled flight.
The CG is also forward of the face, resulting in increased MOI, exceptional feel and a club face that simply wants to square up at impact.
 SPIN MILLED GROOVES
SM9’s patented Spin Milled grooves are meticulously engineered through a new cutting process to maximize spin and durability. The process starts by cutting the face perfectly flat with a high-speed saw. Then every groove is individually cut based on loft and finish; low lofts (46°-54°) are designed with narrower, deeper grooves, while higher lofts (56°-62°) have wider, shallower grooves.
Micro-grooves are individually cut in between grooves, which maximize spin on partial shots. A proprietary heat treatment is applied to the impact area which doubles the durability of the groove without impacting feel, making it the most durable groove in golf. The process is only complete when every Vokey wedge is 100% inspected for utmost quality and performance.
