CHICAGO — The chants have followed Pete Crow-Armstrong from the Tokyo Dome in Japan in March, across road ballparks throughout the country all season and persistently within Wrigley Field from the Cubs†faithful who regularly pack the place.

On Friday afternoon, they were more deafening than usual as Crow-Armstrong headed out to center field.

As those repeated cries of “P-C-A!†rained down from the stands, the dynamic Cubs center fielder raised his cap to another roar. Crow-Armstrong then repeatedly patted his heart, offering gratitude for the crowdâ€s raucous recognition of him joining franchise icon Sammy Sosa as the only players in team history with 30 homers and 30 steals in a season.

“They didnâ€t have to give me any sort of ovation,†Crow-Armstrong said. “Itâ€s really special that we get such a crowd every day, so itâ€s very important, for me at least, to let them know that Iâ€ve got them like theyâ€ve got me all year.â€

In the fourth inning of a 12-1 romp over the Cardinals, Crow-Armstrong connected with Miles Mikolas†curveball that dropped right into the heart of the zone. The powerful swing that had gone missing in recent weeks was back in full force, launching the baseball into the right-field bleacher seats for a two-run souvenir.

Crow-Armstrong watched the ball in flight for a moment, but then he quickly turned to his teammates in the third-base dugout and flipped his bat away. The blast was the All-Starâ€s first since Sept. 15, and only his second going back to Aug. 23. And with that home run, Crow-Armstrong finally reached this anticipated milestone.

After the game, Crow-Armstrong took photos with the fan who wound up with the 30-30 baseball. The Cubs star gave him a few items — a jersey, bat and baseball — and posed for photos outside the Cubs†clubhouse after the win. The center fielder said the man told him it was his first Cubs game in about 30 years.

“Glad I got to make it worth it,†Crow-Armstrong said.

With the win, the Cubs (90-70) increased their cushion to 2 1/2 games over the Padres (87-72) for the National Leagueâ€s top Wild Card spot. If San Diego loses on Friday night, Chicago would clinch hosting the Wild Card Series at Wrigley Field, with Game 1 on Tuesday.

Crow-Armstrong also carved out a distinct place in Cubs history with the blast, too. He became the only player in the teamâ€s storied annals to collect at least 30 homers, 30 doubles and 30 stolen bases in a single campaign. That has been done 55 times overall in baseball history since at least 1901.

On top of that, Crow-Armstrong became the MLB-record sixth player with a 30-30 showing this year, joining Juan Soto, Corbin Carroll, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Francisco Lindor and José Ramirez. The previous record was four such performances in a single Major League season (accomplished five times).

The rest of the Cubs†lineup was right with Crow-Armstrong in the power outpouring, too.

Nico Hoerner launched a solo homer in the first off Mikolas to get the derby rolling. Michael Busch followed Crow-Armstrongâ€s historic shot with a blast of his own in the fifth. And then in the seventh, Seiya Suzuki — in the wake of a two-homer game on Thursday night — hammered a grand slam to put an exclamation point on a seven-run seventh.

Between Crow-Armstrong, Suzuki (30 homers) and Busch (32), the Cubs now have three players with at least 30 blasts in the same season for only the second time in team history. The 2004 club holds the single-season team mark with four players (Moises Alou, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Sosa).

“He does things that help you win games,†Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said of Crow-Armstrong. “I think that he showed that the last couple nights. I think for us to be our best version of ourselves, heâ€s doing those things on a nightly basis.â€

In Wednesdayâ€s 10-3 win over the Mets, Crow-Armstrong scored from second base on a wild pitch in a key moment. On Thursday, he showed off his elite defensive ability by chasing down a deep fly from Soto and making a jaw-dropping lunging catch in the right-center gap. The power showed up again on Friday.

Those are the kinds of things that can swing momentum in an October atmosphere.

“He gets the whole crowd involved and everybody gets excited,†Suzuki said via interpreter Edwin Stanberry. “To think about what he can do in the playoffs, Iâ€m very excited.â€

Harry Kane scored his 100th goal for Bayern Munich on Friday night, reaching the landmark in just 104 matches to become the fastest player this century to reach 100 goals for a single club.

The England captain was on target twice in a 4-0 home win against Werder Bremen, taking him to three figures and extending Bayernâ€s 100% record after five Bundesliga outings. In doing so Kane has nudged ahead of Erling Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo, who took 105 matches to reach three figures for Manchester City and Real Madrid respectively. The pair had jointly shared the scoring record in Europeâ€s top five leagues but Kane has now gone clear on his own.

Kane, who ended his long association with Tottenham to join Bayern in 2023, is now the 19th player to score 100 goals for the club.

Bayern were already one ahead through Jonathan Tah when he slammed home a penalty on the stroke of half-time – his 18th successful spot-kick from as many attempts. Kane moved from 99 to 100 with a smart finish 20 minutes into the second half, stabbing home after being teed up by Luis Díaz.

Kane was substituted with 12 minutes to go, denying him the chance of a second straight hat-trick after putting three past Hoffenheim, but Konrad Laimer did pop up to make it four.

In France, Strasbourg missed a chance to go clear at the top of Ligue 1. Liam Roseniorâ€s side were leading Marseille at home until the 78th minute, Abdoul Ouattara with the goal, but ended up with a 2-1 defeat which puts Roberto De Zerbiâ€s side top of the standings for the time being.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed the equaliser and Michael Amir Murillo completed the turnaround victory as the clock ticked into added time.

Chelsea’s activity in the transfer market during recent seasons has led fans of rival clubs to question how the Blues can afford such a volume of high-profile, expensive signings without contravening the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability rules (PSR).

Under BlueCo ownership, the Blues have been able to sell the Women’s team and hotels on the Stamford Bridge site to sister companies, making sure they, technically, abide by English football’s financial controls.

In Europe, however, such deals would not count towards UEFA’s rules and player trading takes on greater importance.

The ‘football earnings’ rule requires clubs to balance their spending with revenues. Clubs are obligated to limit their losses to €60 million over a three-year period, although this can be higher for clubs in good financial health.

According to Daily Telegraph journalist Matt Law, the Blues will need to be more business-savvy next summer as the club’s financial position comes under greater scrutiny by European football’s governing body.

Chelsea striker Joao Pedro already has two Premier League goals to his name this season

“Nicolas Jackson isn’t in their Champions League squad. So even if they sell Nicolas Jackson, he will not count [towards complying with UEFA’s rules],” Law said on the ‘London is Blue’ podcast.

“Because it has to be people who you have to balance against people who were in your squad. So, if [Chelsea] sell [Raheem] Sterling, if they sell Jackson, if they sell [Axel] Disasi, they’re not going to count.

“So, if they bring players into a squad next summer, they’re going to have to trade again, and it’s going to result in first-team players having to be sold, basically. That makes life very difficult for next summer.”

Chelsea spent approximately £300m in the summer transfer window, recouping around £290m from player sales. Whether Enzo Maresca’s side are able to repeat their strong player trading performance in 12 months’ time is a different matter altogether, but could prove necessary.

Based on Chelsea’s most recently available accounts as at June 30, 2024, the club reported a pre-tax profit of £128.4 million, suggesting the organisation is in good financial health. This reflected a major improvement on the £90.1 million loss posted during the previous year.

Although, without the ‘repositioning’ of their Women’s team, which generated a £198.7m profit, Chelsea’s financial footing would not appear as secure.

Clubs competing in UEFA competitions must also adhere to the ‘squad cost rule’, which limits a club’s spending on wages, transfer fees (amortised over the contract length), and agent fees.

This spending is capped at 70 per cent of the club’s annual revenue, which fell to £468.5m during 2023/24, down from just over half a billion the season prior.

Red Wings recent 5th round pick Nikita Tyurin signs four-year extension with Russian club

Detroit Red Wings 2025 fifth-round pick Nikita Tyurin has committed to staying in Russia for the foreseeable future, signing a new four-year contract with his MHL club, HC Spartak Moscow.

The deal, announced on Wednesday by the team, runs through the end of the 2028–29 season and marks a significant step in the young defenseman’s development path.

Detroit prospects Emmitt Finnie and Nate Danielson delivered impressive performances in the Red Wings†3-2 preseason-opening win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

Tyurin, 18, had a breakout debut in Russiaâ€s Junior Hockey League (MHL), playing a key role in JHC Spartak Moscowâ€s run to the Kharlamov Cup championship. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 187 pounds, the Moscow native reportedly totaled 30 points (6 goals, 24 assists) over 75 games across all competitions, establishing himself as one of Spartakâ€s most promising young defensemen.

In 50 regular-season MHL games, Tyurin recorded 20 points (4 goals, 16 assists), finishing as Spartakâ€s second-highest scoring defenseman while averaging 18 minutes of ice time per game. His mature, poised play earned him a spot in the MHL All-Star Game, a gold medal at the Challenge Cup, and a call-up to the KHL, where he made his debut with Spartakâ€s senior team.

We recently highlighted some of his early success this season and broke down a recent interview Tyurin had done with the JHL website, where he mentioned he needs to continue to add muscle and weight as he felt undersized going into puck battles. He added that he added 13 pounds in the off-season after weighing in at 174 pounds last season.

“It’s Time”: Dylan Larkin Lays Out Clear Goal For Red Wings
The city of Detroit hasn’t hosted a Stanley Cup Playoff game since April 2016 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Joe Louis Arena, who at that time were overseen by general manager Steve Yzerman.

While the new deal means Tyurin is likely to remain in Russia for at least the next few seasons, it could benefit both player and NHL team alike. He would turn 22 years old at the end of his deal and could present the option to follow up his development in the Spartak system with a stint in North America with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

For now, Tyurin should receive opportunities in both the MHL and KHL with valuable ice time and experience before making the leap to pro hockey. With a new contract in place and a championship already under his belt, Tyurin now turns his focus to further cementing his place as one of Russiaâ€s top young defensive talents.

Leeds United bid farewell to long-serving striker Patrick Bamford during the summer transfer window, parting company with the experienced forward deemed surplus to requirements by first-team boss Daniel Farke.

Bamford, 32, is now on the cusp of completing a transfer to LaLiga side Getafe, according to reports in Spain.

The Madrid-based club are believed to have offered the striker a contract which is ready to be signed upon the completion of a medical.

Bamford spent seven years at Leeds, scoring 60 goals in just over 200 appearances. The striker’s importance waned during the latter period of his Elland Road stay, featuring 18 times during last season’s Championship title-winning season for the Whites.

He failed to hit the back of the net throughout 2024/25. However, Bamford is fondly remembered in West Yorkshire for his role in two promotions to the Premier League, as well as his 17-goal top flight campaign in 2020/21 under Marcelo Bielsa.

The one-cap England international is expected to join up with Jose Bordalas’ Getafe squad who currently sit eighth in Spain’s top flight.

Bamford will challenge the likes of Borja Mayoral and Adrian Liso for a place in Bordalas’ team, who are notoriously hard to beat.

Leeds man Mateo Joseph, who leapfrogged Bamford in the Elland Road pecking order last season, is currently on loan at Getafe’s LaLiga rivals Real Mallorca and the pair could be reunited on opposing sides later this season.

Due to the period of time Bamford has spent out of regular match action, it may take some time for the 32-year-old to get up to speed with his soon-to-be new club.

That said, the player is likely to have October 19 in mind as a date he will aim to be ready for when Real Madrid visit Estadio Coliseum.

Bamford’s soon-to-be boss Bordalas has previously drawn criticism for defending ex-Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, who spent 2023/24 on loan at Getafe.

“He is a free person, a footballer of a very high level and who arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm, and we are obviously going to help him so that he recovers back to his best level,” Bordalas said upon signing the former England man.

“I have already commented what I had to comment. I can only speak on a football level. We all know the potential he has. He is a very young boy, he is still 21 years old and we can help him adapt to a situation.”

He also described Greenwood as a ‘great lad’ and ‘exemplary’ after he was allegedly insulted by Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham.

Greenwood, now playing under Roberto De Zerbi at Olympique Marseille, was arrested back in 2022 after images and a voice note were posted online. The charges against him included attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior.

In February 2023, the United Kingdom’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced all charges against Greenwood had been dropped. The CPS stated the decision was made due to ‘the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light’, which left the prosecution no longer with a realistic prospect of conviction.

Arsenal are in talks over a move that will smash records currently held at the club.

The Gunners have had a steady start to the season, having picked up three wins and a draw from a difficult opening five fixtures after an unprecedented spending spree that saw eight new first-teamers join the club.

But after a change behind the scenes on the board, Arsenal are refusing to rest on their laurels – and owners Kroenke Sports Entertainment (KSE) appear more focused than ever to deliver on their investment.

Arsenal talks are ongoing for historic move, led by sporting director Andrea Berta

Arsenal committed over £250 million on the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Ebere Eze and Martin Zubimendi over the summer, tooling manager Mikel Arteta with the depth that he didn’t have last season, when the Gunners finished second for a third season in a row.

In recent days, director Richard Garlick has been promoted to CEO with vice-chair Tim Lewis departing the club, with several KSE aids joining the club and co-chairman Josh Kroenke perhaps taking a more active role behind the scenes.

The Mail revealed that Kroenke had a “crucial influence” in the ambitious signing of Eze before greenlighting the move, and now, according to transfer expert Dean Jones, Arsenal are investing further by tying down William Saliba to what could be a historic move.

TEAMtalk are relaying Jones’ comments that the North Londoners are preparing a contract for the Frenchman – ranked at no.2 in FourFourTwo’s list of the best centre-backs in the world right now – that would see him become the club’s record earner, seeing off interest from Real Madrid with two years left on his current deal.

“Arsenal remain determined to tie William Saliba down to a new long-term contract, and from what I have been hearing, they have been ready to push the limits of their wage structure to make it happen,” Jones explained, suggesting that the Gunners could offer around £300,000-a-week.

FourFourTwo understands that former record signing Mesut Ozil extended his contract in 2018 for three years for around £350,000-a-week – but given that Saliba would be signing a longer-term deal, the defender’s deal could be worth over £20m more, and would thus break the record for the biggest contract ever awarded to a Gunner.

According to Capology, Kai Havertz is currently the biggest earner at the Emirates Stadium on £280,000-a-week, with Saliba seventh on the list with a base salary of £195,000-a-week.

The 24-year-old is worth €80m, according to Transfermarkt. Arsenal play Newcastle United when Premier League action returns next weekend.

Stripped of the captaincy. His contract nearing expiration without a renewal proposal. After zero minutes played in the opening three matches, nothing seemed to be going Lorenzo Pellegriniâ€s way. Until the Rome derby. The Roman-born midfielder cast aside all the issues surrounding him and scored the decisive goal for Roma in a 1-0 win over Lazio in Serie A on Sunday.

“Aside from all the reasoning and words, there is one constant, which is that I love Roma,†said Pellegrini, who joined the club aged nine. “As long as I wear this shirt, there wonâ€t be a moment where I will hold back. Life is unpredictable, you donâ€t know what could happen next. I seemed on the verge of leaving and then got hurt. But today I started and scored to win the derby.â€

After being derided by Gian Piero Gasperini a day earlier when Romaâ€s new coach said that, at 29, Pellegrini has “got to become an athlete and start running,†the midfielder was perfectly positioned to strike when the chance came his way in the 38th minute. Devyne Rensch did well to strip the ball from Lazioâ€s left-back Nuno Tavares and rolled it across to the former-captain, stationed in the centre of the area, to fire home, prompting Romaâ€s end of the Stadio Olimpico to erupt with smoke bombs.

Pellegrini, who is also trying to regain his spot in Italyâ€s squad, celebrated with a kiss toward the Curva Sud and Romaâ€s ultras. Moments before the goal, a banner popped up in the Curva Sud that said: “Welcome back, captain.†It was Pellegriniâ€s fourth career goal in the Derby della Capitale – but his first since January in any competition.

A tempestuous match finished with Lazio having only 10 men after Reda Belahyane was shown a straight red card for a foul on Manu Koné in the 88th. Still, Lazio kept on threatening and Danilo Cataldi hit the post in stoppage time. The fireworks continued after the full-time whistle with Lazioâ€s Mattéo Guendouzi also shown a red card for dissent as the teamâ€s head back to the dressing rooms.

Roma have won three of the last four derbies without conceding a goal, with the teams drawing 1-1 in their previous meeting. The victory also continues the Giallorossiâ€s strong early season form, they have won three of their four opening matches under Gasperini, who replaced the retiring Claudio Ranieri after nine seasons at Atalanta. Lazio have lost three out of four games since Sarri was rehired in the summer.

In France, Le Classique between Marseille and PSG has been postponed. Ligue 1 confirmed the news ahead of the scheduled evening kick-off in the anticipation of a major storm in the south of France.

The match has been rearranged for Monday evening, which directly clashes with the Ballon dâ€Or ceremony in Paris, where many PSG players and the clubâ€s manager – Luis Enrique – are nominated for awards.

Atlético Madridâ€s struggles in La Liga persisted as they were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by Mallorca on Sunday, with the goalkeeper Leo Román delivering an outstanding performance before Vedat Muriqiâ€s late header cancelled out Conor Gallagherâ€s opener.

The result left Diego Simeoneâ€s side languishing in 12th place with six points from five matches, while Mallorca are 19th with two points. Real Madrid lead the league with 15 points.

Román was pivotal for Mallorca, frustrating Atlético throughout the match with a series of remarkable saves. The 25-year-oldâ€s heroics began early, denying Giacomo Raspadoriâ€s audacious second-minute attempt with a one-handed save, before palming away Pablo Barriosâ€s effort in the seventh minute.

His performance included denying Julián Alvarez from the penalty spot early in the first half, a moment that encapsulated the visitors†inability to capitalise on their chances.

Atláticoâ€s frustrations mounted when Alexander Sørloth received a straight red card in the 72nd minute for a studs-up challenge on Antonio Raillo, leaving the visitors to play the final 18 minutes a man down.

Atletico finally found a way through in the 79th minute. Gallagher was quickest to react after Román parried Marcos Llorenteâ€s low effort across goal, slotting home to give the visitors the lead.

But their celebrations proved short-lived. In the 85th minute, the 19-year-old substitute Jan Virgili whipped in a cross that caught Atleticoâ€s defence napping, allowing Muriqi to head past Jan Oblak at the far post.

Haris Tabakovic snatched Borussia Mönchengladbachâ€s first goal of the season with a stoppage-time equaliser that earned them a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. Tabakovic headed in deep in stoppage time to cancel out Malik Tillmanâ€s 70th-minute goal for the hosts.

Gladbach, who sacked coach Gerardo Seoane on Monday after their worst start in 34 years following three league games without scoring a goal, had Eugen Polanski in the dugout as interim coach.

Leverkusen scored in the 70th minute when Tillman tapped in from 10 yards. With time running out Tabakovic rose high to connect with his fellow substitute Charles Herrmannâ€s corner for the equaliser that left Leverkusen in 12th place on five points.

Gladbach, who are without a league win in their last 11 matches, including last season, are 17th on two points.
