SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

SHOW SUMMARY:In this episode of “Everything with Rich Fann hosted by Wade Keller,” Wade and Rich discuss these topics:

  • Could WWE use Andrade leverage to get AEW to gift Adam “Edge” Copeland to them for one last match against John Cena? How does Shinsuke Nakamura and New Japan fit into that?
  • The Rise of Bron Breakker, but is there a ceiling he’s going to hit?
  • Who will win between C.M. Punk and Jey Uso, and was there a better opponent for Punk in that battle royal?
  • What if Dominik Mysterio won the battle royal and then beat C.M. Punk and became World Champion? Would fans push back that it was one step too far or could it be a breakout moment for WWE and Dom that fans rallied behind?
  • Should Tony Khan utilize Chris Jericho again?
  • Where does Jericho rank among all-time MVPs of AEW?
  • Is it a good use of A.J. Styles to win the World Tag Team Titles with Dragon Lee after losing to John Cena?
  • What kind of risk does AEW face if Warner Bros. Discover is sold?
  • Plus: Hangman vs. The Opps, Mercedes and all her belts, fallout from Sarah Stock and Amanda Huber debating AEW’s affect on kids, the Augustus Glppp-ification of pro wrestling.
  • And a fun finish: Creating a modern-day AEW cartoon out of current roster members to counter WWE pushing the old WWE cartoon series starting Hulk Hogan in the 1980s – and could it lead to a brand-split of sorts with AEW Saturday Morning wrestling?

It probably wouldnâ€t happen, but speaking as a fan, Peter Rosenberg wants to see one of the Ruthless Aggression Eraâ€s biggest icons as John Cenaâ€s final opponent in WWE.

Cenaâ€s ultimate sendoff is set for WWE Saturday Nightâ€s Main Event on December 13. The GOAT reiterated that he wonâ€t be wrestling past his retirement date and encouraged fans to see him in action one final time in Washington, D.C.

WWE has yet to announce John Cenaâ€s final opponent. Gunther has reportedly been tipped to deliver the final chop to the Cenation Leader, while Dominik Mysterio has also expressed his willingness to “put the final nail†in Cenaâ€s coffin.

That said, WWE personality Peter Rosenberg believes a former superstar should face Cena at WWE SNME in December. During a recent appearance on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, Rosenberg named Dave Bautista as the person heâ€d like to see end Cenaâ€s career for good.

“Because weâ€ve talked about all the people who make sense, and a name that just hasnâ€t gotten mentioned very much, itâ€s super unlikely, and Iâ€m probably reaching here, but when you think about what they represented a certain time, the last Saturday Nightâ€s Main Event happens to be in DC, if you hear this [plays Batistaâ€s theme].â€

When CVV said Dave gave his word he wonâ€t wrestle again, Rosenberg said he believes Bautista meant it, but he still selfishly would love to see it happen.

“So I think youâ€re right, and I think he meant that, and I respect that. I personally as a fan, and who cares what we think, itâ€s about what he wants in his life. But Iâ€m selfish, and Iâ€m a fan. Iâ€m not satisfied with the editing. I would love to see Batista one more time. I think thereâ€s more. I just think thereâ€s one more story to be told.â€

Rosenberg went on to note that Batista and Cena were always positioned as the two representatives of the Ruthless Aggression era. This includes on the SmackDown vs. RAW 2005 video game cover, so it would be fitting to see them finish up together.

John Cenaâ€s Peacemaker role was originally meant for Batista

John Cena has received massive praise for his performance in HBO Maxâ€s Peacemaker series. Cena played the titular character across two seasons. Although fans are eager for a third installment, showrunner James Gunn has confirmed that Peacemakerâ€s story will continue in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie.

Gunn previously revealed that he originally wrote the Peacemaker character with Dave Bautista in mind. The Animal had worked with Gunn on Marvelâ€s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, where he portrayed Drax. Warner Bros. even offered the role of Peacemaker to Bautista, but the former WWE superstar turned it down due to other commitments.

“I wrote the character of Peacemaker for him, and we offered him the role, but [he] was offered two movies, and we werenâ€t paying him a lot, so he had to go where the money was,†James Gunn revealed on The Howard Stern Show.

During a recent episode of the official Peacemaker podcast, Gunn revealed John Cena learned to get tased for the show. Fans can read his full comments here.

The final match of John Cena’s career could potentially have a championship on the line.

In the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reports that there have been discussions about Cena possibly winning the Intercontinental Championship next month and then defending it in his final match. As of now, WWE’s plans are for Cena to challenge Dominik Mysterio for the IC title at Survivor Series on November 29. Gunther is then planned to be Cena’s last opponent on December 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Meltzer wrote:

The idea of Cena winning the IC title from Dominik (the match right now is at Survivor Series) and it being in play for the final match with Gunther has been discussed.

Becoming Intercontinental Champion is one of the only WWE accolades that Cena has never achieved. He’s a 17-time World Champion and did hold the WWE Championship one last time earlier in his retirement tour.

Dominik has been IC Champion since April, while Gunther had the longest reign in the title’s history for 666 days in 2022-2024.

There are only four appearances left on Cena’s retirement tour before his career concludes.:

  • Monday: November 10: WWE Raw (Boston, Massachusetts)
  • Monday, November 17: WWE Raw (New York City, New York)
  • Saturday, November 29: WWE Survivor Series (San Diego, California)
  • Saturday, December 13:  WWE Saturday Nightâ€s Main Event (Washington, D.C.)

Cena posted a tweet today reiterating that there is a zero percent chance that he will ever wrestle again after the December 13 date:

It seems almost every WWE Superstar would love to be John Cena‘s opponent in his final match.

John Cenaâ€s final WWE match is quickly approaching. But only one man will get the right to say that they shared the ring with Cena for his final match in December at Saturday Nightâ€s Main Event. While reports suggest Gunther will get this honor, other people continue to throw their names in the hat.

WWE Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio recently spoke with Graps & Yaps. When asked what he thought about John Cena potentially coming after his title in pursuit of becoming a Grand Slam Champion, Mysterio said if Cena wants him to put the final nail in his coffin, heâ€d be more than happy to do so.

“I mean, at the end of the day, Iâ€m here,†Dominik Mysterio said. “If John Cena wants some, he can come get some. Heâ€s got four dates left, you said? I mean, if that old geezer wants me to put a final nail in his coffin, Iâ€ll be more than happy to. Thatâ€s what Iâ€m here for. Iâ€m here to be and stay your dirty double champ.â€

John Cena has spoken highly of Dirty Dom in the past

Earlier this year, John Cena appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and offered high praise for Dominik Mysterio, calling him incredible and going as far as to say that heâ€ll be the most famous Mysterio in wrestling when itâ€s all said and done.

“Dom Mysterio is born for this, period,†John Cena said. “And I got to work with him very early in his career. And Iâ€ve had the chance to work with experienced talent, but Iâ€ve also had the chance to work with a lot of new talent. You can tell right away. Thereâ€s always late arrivals. People can not get it and then figure it out. Iâ€m a living example of that.

“But thereâ€s also those people, like, I remember Randy Orton just making everything look so easy. Dom just makes everything effortless, and he doesnâ€t crack under pressure. And any pool weâ€ve dropped him in, he has not only tread water, heâ€s swimming laps around everybody else.

“Dom Mysterio, we ainâ€t even close to what that kidâ€s capable of. Heâ€s incredible, and heâ€s going to be incredible for the next 20 years, or as long as he wants to be in this business. He will be, and I love his dad like heâ€s another one. Thereâ€s a close connection. I love that dude. He will be the most famous Mysterio in professional wrestling.â€

The Rock and John Cena at WrestleMania

Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images

WWE legend The Rock has discussed John Cena’s final opponent in WWE and who should make the decision to choose his opponent.

During his recent appearance on the “New Heights” podcast hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce, The Rock initially joked that it should be him to face Cena in his final match. He, though, put the ball in Cena’s court, arguing how Cena has earned the right to decide whom he wants to face in his final match.

“I have a tiny bit of influence in the booking of it. But it really is just whoever John wants,” The Rock said. “Really, that’s what it comes down to. Whoever he wants, that should be [it]. It’s not me or Nick Khan, or Triple H [to decide]. It’s just whoever John wants. That guy has earned it.”Â

The Rock praised his former on-screen ally and rival, lauding the 17-time world champion’s authenticity.

“The best part about John is, he comes as advertised. So who you think he is, that’s who he is. And he’s a good dude. And I love that guy,” he added.

While The Rock and Triple H have claimed that it’s down to whom Cena wants to face in his retirement run, Cena himself has said that he doesn’t choose whom he faces, leaving that decision to WWE management.Â

Cena’s last match will take place at Saturday Night’s Main Event in the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., on December 13. One person who will not be a part of Cena’s retirement tour — or his final match — is AEW’s Adam Copeland, aka Edge in WWE, who was one of Cena’s greatest rivals. The name that’s been doing the rounds is former WWE World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER, who has been on the sidelines since his match at SummerSlam.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has opened up about his involvement in determining John Cena’s final WWE opponent.

Speaking on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, The Rock made it clear that the 17-time world champion should have the final say in choosing his retirement match opponent. However, he further talked about his own involvement, revealing he holds only a small amount of sway in the decision-making process.

The Rock said that he has a “tiny bit of influence” in the booking of the match.

I have a tiny bit of influence in the booking of it, but it really is just whoever John wants, really thats what it comes down to. Whoever he wants, itâ€s not me, Nick Khan, or Triple H. It’s whoever John wants. That guyâ€s earned it, and you know what, the best part about John is, he comes as advertised, so who you think he is, thatâ€s who he is, and heâ€s a good dude, and I love that guy.”

He appreciated Cena’s kind nature and added that Cena was a “good dude”.

He’s a good dude, man. And kind. He’s really cool. And that stuff matters to me these days, any day. But like if somebody’s kind and cool.” (1:06:24 – 1:06:33)

The Rock’s comments come as Cena prepares for his final WWE match on December 13, 2025, at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C. As a board member of WWE’s parent company, TKO Group Holdings, The Rock does maintain some influence within the organization, but he believes Cena has earned the right to choose his own farewell opponent after more than two decades in the ring.

Who is John Cena’s Final Opponent?

Cena announced his retirement from in-ring competition at Money in the Bank in July 2024, revealing that 2025 would mark the end of his legendary WWE career. His farewell tour has included high-profile matches against wrestlers like Brock Lesnar and AJ Styles, with his recent Crown Jewel victory over Styles being one of his final scheduled bouts.

While WWE has not officially announced Cena’s final opponent, multiple reports suggest that the Ring General Gunther has been internally selected for the historic match. According to Wrestling Observer‘s Dave Meltzer, several sources within WWE have confirmed that Gunther is the chosen opponent, with plans potentially including an on-screen tournament to determine the challenger.

The Ring General would represent a fitting final opponent for Cena, as Gunther has established himself as one of WWE’s premier villains. He previously held the Intercontinental Championship for a record-breaking 666 days and has already retired wrestling legend Goldberg earlier this year.

The matchup would allow Cena to pass the torch to a younger generation while providing Gunther with a career-defining victory.

The WWE Universe made their voices heard loud and clear following John Cena’s victory at WWE Crown Jewel: Perth. During the post-show event, the fans chanted “We want Edge,” making clear who they want Cena to face next. Not satisfied with just the chant, the crowd in Australia sang Metalingus, the theme song used by the Rated-R Superstar.

These chants were mostly ignored by Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque, who spoke about the great experience WWE has had in Australia for Crown Jewel. While Levesque eventually highlighted the fans singing, saying the crowd had been “doing this all night long,” he did not make reference to the message the fans were sending.

Edge, aka AEW’s Adam Copeland, is considered by many to be Cena’s greatest rival. In 2006, Edge ended Cena’s first reign as WWE Champion and John would repay the favor mere weeks later.

Copeland recently shared that he’d be leaving AEW programming, and was unclear when, if ever, he would return. While some quickly saw this as a sign of a WWE return for a Cena match, it has since been reported that this is not the case.

John Cena has just four appearances left in his WWE farewell tour, a run that has seen him face rivals like Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar, and AJ Styles. And while a Cena-Edge match may never happen again, fans in Australia remain hopeful.

John Cena’s retirement match is on the horizon, and rumors have emerged regarding how his final opponent will be determined.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News) reported this week that plans are in place for WWE to announce a tournament with the winner earning the right to face Cena in his last match at the Dec. 13 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C.

Meltzer added that multiple people with knowledge of the plans have confirmed that Gunther will win the tournament and go on to clash with Cena in December.

Assuming those plans come to fruition, here is a projected eight-man tournament that could realistically be booked to determine Cena’s final foe.

Rusev def. Dominik Mysterio

Carmelo Hayes def. The Miz

Drew McIntyre def. Jacob Fatu

Drew McIntyre def. Carmelo Hayes

Gunther def. Drew McIntyre

The aforementioned bracket features a combination of Cena’s rivals from the past such as The Miz, Rusev and Sheamus, and possible dream opponents like Gunther, Carmelo Hayes and Jacob Fatu.

Most of the first-round matchups are tie-ins to existing rivalries, as Rusev and Dominik Mysterio recently did battle over the Intercontinental Championship, The Miz and Hayes split up as a team and Fatu confronted Drew McIntyre on SmackDown.

The third first-round matchup would be a showdown between old rivals in Gunther and Sheamus, who have faced off in many hard-hitting matches over the years.

In this scenario, the semifinals would include a first-time-ever match between Gunther and Rusev that would perhaps be just as physical as Gunther vs. Sheamus, and the first singles match between an established veteran in McIntyre and an up-and-coming star in Hayes.

After a clean win by Gunther and The Miz costing Hayes in his semifinal, the tournament would come down to Gunther and McIntyre, who feuded with each over the Intercontinental Championship in 2023.

Either Gunther or McIntyre would be a strong pick as Cena’s final opponent, but given that Cena has never faced Gunther before, The Ring General gets the nod.

Gunther retired WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg on an episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event earlier this year, and he will have the opportunity to do the same to Cena.

WWE reportedly has made a decision for the final opponent of John Cena’s historic career.

Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Gunther has been tabbed as Cena’s opponent for his farewell match on Dec. 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C.

“Multiple sources over the last two days have confirmed the name and the WWE internal listing for the Saturday Night Main Event at this point lists that as the only match on the show,” Meltzer wrote (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News). “Two sources have confirmed that the latest plan is for a tournament to be announced, possibly on the air by Paul Levesque, with top wrestlers vying to be Cena’s last opponent. But multiple have confirmed however it reaches the conclusion, that Gunther was the person chosen for the match.”

Gunther is a two-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He hasn’t been seen since his second title reign ended with a loss to CM Punk at the SummerSlam premium live event in August.

Known for his brutal, hard-hitting style, Gunther is widely regarded as one of the best heels in the business. He quickly established himself as one of the faces of the current generation, and being Cena’s final opponent shows how much the company values him.

Cena is set to close the book on his iconic wrestling career this winter, and passing the torch to Gunther will be a spectacular way to go out.

John Cena’s Farewell Tour has become a topic of discussion among pundits and fans alike, with many thinking that it left a lot to be desired. However, WWE Hall of Famer Rikishi thinks otherwise.

Speaking on his podcast, Rikishi Fatu Off The Top, the 59-year-old was asked about his opinion on Cena’s final run. He praised The Cenation Leader for his contribution to the company and the business as a whole. He then thanked The Franchise Player and wished him the best for his future, and advised him to take it easy.

When asked about how he would rate the retirement tour on a scale of 10, Rikishi said he would score it at 15:

It’s been great. I think so. I mean, damn sure he came back to work, man. They got him busy. It’s like every TV show you see, John Cenaâ€s up in there. And I got to give it to him, man. His age, the many years heâ€s been doing it, the bumps, and just the demands of being that guy for the business for, well, 20 years or whatever the case may be, and heâ€s still out there.

Itâ€s a beautiful thing to be able to have the fans get a last glimpse of Mr. John Cena himself, the icon of the business. In his time, John did a lot. He carried that whole company on his shoulders for a minute. And to be able to see him doing this last runaround for his final tour, itâ€s a beautiful thing.

I just wish him love, respect, and success after the ring. Go out there and enjoy yourself, my man, because you damn sure worked for it. Weâ€re going to miss you.

[So on a one-to-10 basis, what do you think?]

Absolutely. I want to go 15.”

Rikishi Chooses Massive Name As John Cena’s Final Opponent

The former Intercontinental Champion was then asked about his thoughts on the rumors that Edge (aka Adam Copeland) could be The Last Real Champion’s last opponent, to which he replied that he would pick someone who could be considered the GOAT, stating that he would want The Rock to face Cena one last time.

He added that even if the match was not up to par, the conversation about the two WWE icons having a match would have more gravitas than Cena vs Edge. He said:

For me, I kind of see it like this–if Iâ€m going to pick somebody, Iâ€m going out. This is it for ‘Kishi. Never am I ever coming back, man. I would have to go after some of the GOATS.

Now, the one thing that people probably have never seen and would love to see–theyâ€ve seen it back in the day, but I think at this point, The Final Boss vs. John Cena. That right there, theyâ€ve got history.

I can go to sleep then, right? Whether it was a stinkeroo or whatever, at the end of the day, theyâ€re going to say, ‘Whoa! John Cenaâ€s last match was against The Rock.’ When you say The Rock–oh, there it is. But if itâ€s, ‘John Cena had his last match with Edge,’ does it carry a lot more weight? You see what Iâ€m saying?”
