Zuchowski claims 100th career win as Lady Hornets sweep Wyalusing

By: Ed Weaver  /  October 18, 2017

Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball head coach Sharon Zuchowski picked up her 100th career win as the Lady Hornets swept Wyalusing 3-0 on Tuesday, October 17.

“It has been a privilege to be able to come back to Wellsboro and coach in a program that started me off in the sport,” reflected Zuchowski after the match “I played for, and then coached under, the very successful Coach Anne McNaight. I am grateful for what she taught me and have tried to use some of those same principals even though the game has seen so many changes. These wins came off the hands of some very talented young ladies. It was a great win for this team tonight as we finish up our regular season and start thinking about Districts.”

After being swept back on September 21 in Wyalusing the Lady Hornets returned the favor on their home court Tuesday. Wellsboro took the first set 25-16, won the second 25-19 then hung on to win the third 25-22.

Sophomore Megan Starkweather led Wellsboro with 14 kills and 2 blocks and sophomore Caitlyn Callahan had 11 kills and 3 blocks. Senior Cheyenne Sherman had 16 digs, 10 points, 1 ace, and 5 kills; senior Jillian Graver recorded 8 points, 1 ace, and 5 kills; and senior Brianne Keane made 29 assists, scored 8 points, and had an ace.

Sophomore Ryann Adams added 10 digs.

Wellsboro’s JV team also swept Wyalusing on the night, winning 2-0 (25-20, 25-10) to improve to 19-2.

The win improves the Lady Hornets’ record to 17-4 (11-3) NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Thursday, October 19 at Troy for the final regular season game.

Warriner continues volleyball career at Lycoming College

By: Ed Weaver  /  May 2, 2016

Senior Darci Warriner announced that she will continue her volleyball career in the Fall at Division III Lycoming College on Monday, May 2.

While at Lycoming, Warriner will major in Psychology, while getting teaching certificates in both Elementary Education and Special Education.

“I’m very excited,” Warriner said. “After 9th grade I realized that I wanted to play club volleyball during the winter and after I got on a team sophomore year I really wanted to continue after high school.”

As a junior, Warriner led the team with 335 digs and 243 serves received. As a senior, Warriner led the team in Kill % (25.7) and was second in kills (155), led the team in Serve % (96.2), and was second on the team in digs (257) and serves received (191).

Some of the factors that led Warriner to Lycoming was that it was close to home, a small campus, and how nice her coaches and teammates were.

“Lycoming is really tight together and isn’t spread out or anything and its really welcoming. This April I met some of the teammates and the recruits that I’ll be playing with.”

For head coach Sharon Zuchowski, Warriner is the third Lady Hornet she’s coached that will play on the collegiate level.

“I’m excited for Darci,” said Zuchowski of her team captain. “She’s definitely ready for the next level, she has put in the time and Lycoming is getting a great athlete to fit into their program. Darci brings a lot to the court. She brings leadership, she tends to bring the girls together when we’re down, and just her athletic ability has helped the team all-around. This is something that Darci has really wanted and now she needs to take advantage of it and savor every moment.”

WellsboroAthletics.com would like to congratulate Darci on continuing her career and wish her the best of luck.
