Browsing: Carabao

In a Premier League context only Aston Villa have scored fewer times than Newcastle this season but the Carabao Cup is a different beast and it offered the holders a distinctly therapeutic evening.

Admittedly, it was not quite raining goals for Eddie Howeâ€s side but two apiece from Joelinton and Will Osula at least showed they remember how to score. Granted, Graham Alexanderâ€s Bradford belong to the third tier but the League One leaders proved competitive and well organised opponents who throughly deserved their own consolation goal, registered, evocatively, by their Newcastle-supporting No 9 Andy Cook.

It is sometimes easy to forget that Joelinton joined Newcastle as a £40m centre forward. Howe eventually discovered the Brazilian to be a much better midfielder but when the rebound from Anthony Gordonâ€s blocked shot fell his way here, Joelintonâ€s muscle memory kicked in and the resultant low, 17th minute shot settled his sideâ€s early nerves.

Until then Bradford had frequently succeeded in disrupting Newcastleâ€s one and two touch passing rhythm, with Aaron Ramsdale doing well to save Bobby Pointonâ€s deflected shot. Once in front, though, Howeâ€s players seized control. With the £70m striker Nick Woltemade starting on the bench again, Will Osula had another chance to prove his worth.

This time, he took it. Two minutes after Joelintonâ€s opener, Osula connected with a gorgeous pass from Bruno Guimarães, retained his poise and, left one-on-one with Sam Walker, swept a fine shot beyond the goalkeeperâ€s reach.

As a senior player coming to the end of his career at Burnley a decade and a half ago, Alexander had clashed with a young manager named Eddie Howe. These days fences have long since been mended but Alexander, who, at 53, is six years his Newcastle counterpartâ€s senior, readily admits that, back at Turf Moor, they could not stand each other. Now Howe, who acknowledges he should probably have played Alexander more frequently, had the upper hand again.

Joelinton may have been converted to a midfielder, but his strikerâ€s touch has not deserted him. Photograph: Owen Humphreys/PA

With Guimarães excelling and Lewis Miley gradually starting to assert himself in central midfield, Newcastle were passing and moving with pleasing fluency. Only a strong save on Walkerâ€s part denied Osula a second goal yet the stadium was unusually quiet; more a library than the citadel of sound that greeted Barcelona here last Thursday.

“Whereâ€s your famous atmosphere,†chorused the 4,900 Bradford fans who had made the 100-mile road trip north-east from West Yorkshire. Alexanderâ€s players responded by refusing to fold but their best attacking moves tended to founder in the face of the immensely impressive, finally fit again Sven Botman and his new, ex-Milan centre-half partner Malick Thiaw.

Thank you for your feedback.

No matter; for a team only promoted from League Two this spring, Bradford are evidently on a steep upward trajectory and never looked overawed by their multi-million pound hosts. They might even have pulled a goal back had Stephen Humphrys not directed a header straight at Ramsdale after meeting Pointonâ€s clever delivery.

On the hour, Alexander made his veteran striker Cookâ€s evening by liberating the No 9 from the bench. Cook is a lifelong Newcastle fan who grew up idolising Alan Shearer and, in playing at St James†Park for the first time, he finally fulfilled a long standing dream.

It may have just been a consolation, but scoring at St James†Park was a dream come true for Andy Cook. Photograph: George Wood/Getty Images

Before Alexander could make his mark though, Joelinton scored his second goal of the night, showing Gordon and Anthony Elanga how to finish. That pair had missed opportunities to increase the scoreline but now Joelintonâ€s assured left foot finish after another eye of the needle Guimarães pass had ruined Bradfordâ€s night.

Or had it? Undeterred Cook, only recently recovered from an ACL rupture, responded by scoring the best goal of the night. When Newcastle failed to clear, the 34-year-old was perfectly placed to smash a stupendous half volley in off the underside of the crossbar.

As Alexander and Bradfordâ€s entire bench applauded, sustained chants of “Andy, Andy Cook,†echoed down from the Leazes End. There was still time for Osula to lash home his second goal as Newcastle sealed their place in the fourth round draw.

HALF TIME: Port Vale 0-1 Arsenal

Given the overall balance of play, this could have been worse for Port Vale. But currently itâ€s League One nil, Premier League four (or six, depending on whether youâ€re totting up winning positions or goals).

Share

Port Vale 0-1 Arsenal. Connor Hall should have done better with that header, truth be told. Free on the penalty spot, he slapped his header straight down. Anything whistled with proper conviction towards the net would have given Kepa something to act upon.

Share

Port Vale 0-1 Arsenal. … so having said that, Vale finally show some fight. A corner. Connor Hall canâ€t get a header on target; then his shot is blocked. Arsenal fail to clear their lines properly, and Connorâ€s namesake George sends a dangerous low cross in from the right. Thatâ€s blocked too, and cleared, but itâ€s also so much better from the hosts.

Share

HALF TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Doncaster Rovers

… stretches out ahead of us.

Share

HALF TIME: Newcastle United 2-0 Bradford City

… that looks unlikely to deliver any drama, never mind a shock …

Share

HALF TIME: Huddersfield Town 0-1 Manchester City

An evening of cup football …

Share

Port Vale 0-1 Arsenal. Vale enjoy a little possession in the Arsenal half for the first time this evening. They do very little with it, Arsenal keeping them at armâ€s length comfortably, but small acorns and all that, and the home fans seem to appreciate their teamâ€s efforts.

Share

Huddersfield 0-1 Man City. That half-chance for Town has lit a fire under Pep Guardiola, who takes advantage of a stop in play to offer Phil Foden some beneficial advice in the passionate style. Foden doesnâ€t look particularly happy to receive it. Think Caleb Williams and CJ Stroud, and thatâ€s it, more or less. (A little treat for the NFL heads there.)

Share

Huddersfield 0-1 Man City. This is better from the Terriers, though. Zépiqueno Redmond makes good along the left and feeds Ben Wiles down the channel and into the box. Wiles hits a shot-cum-cross that squirts wide right. A better strike, or someone coming in at the far stick, would have seen City enter a world of pain.

Share

Huddersfield 0-1 Man City. The eight-time winners keep on keepin†on in West Yorkshire. Rico Lewis is released into space down the right and rolls a dangerous ball through the six-yard box, but thereâ€s nobody there in second-choice black to trundle home.

Share

Newcastle 2-0 Bradford. The holders remain well on top at SJP. William Osula has come close a couple of times to scoring his second of the night, only for Bradford goalie Sam Walker to make decent stops.

Share

Tottenham 2-0 Doncaster. Donny goalie Ian Lawlor has been caught out of position a couple of times already tonight. Not so now, as Archie Gray steers a shot towards the bottom right, only for the keeper to react superbly and palm the ball away from danger. Thatâ€s a fine save, but Doncaster are really clinging on here. Spurs looking to get the job done and dusted early doors.

Share

Tottenham 2-0 Doncaster. A ball comes into the Rovers area from the right. Rodrigo Bentancur heads it towards the left-hand side of the goal, with the keeper again on walkabout. Seán Grehan hangs out a leg to feather-flick off the line and out for a corner … but the referee and his assistant combine to present Doncaster with a goal kick. Some credit for Grehanâ€s last-ditch defending, please!

Share

Port Vale 0-1 Arsenal. Vale canâ€t get out of their final third. Arsenal are stroking it around confidently, and borderline dangerously. Vale Park a lot less rowdy than it was a few minutes ago.

Upsets! You want ‘em?! It doesnâ€t look like weâ€ve got ‘em.

GOAL! Port Vale 0-1 Arsenal (Eze 8)

Like the aforementioned Phil Foden, Gabriel Martinelli is emerging from a slump in form. He nips in from the left and finds Eberechi Eze, who opens his body and passes deliciously into the bottom right. Thatâ€s his first goal for his boyhood club.

GOAL! Huddersfield Town 0-1 Manchester City (Foden 18)

Phil Foden has rediscovered the form heâ€d misplaced last season all right. He one-twos his way across the face of the Town box, right to left, before swivelling and whipping a low drive into the bottom right. Lovely finish!

GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Doncaster Rovers (McGrath 16 og)

A nightmare for Donny, as Wilson Odobert jigs down the left and crosses low. Jay McGrath canâ€t sort his feet out, and bundles the ball into his own net. McGrath just one of two players to keep his starting place tonight, a poisoned chalice.

Share

Port Vale 0-0 Arsenal. While that was going on, the game in Burslem gets going. A rare old atmosphere at Vale Park. No wonder, considering Will Unwin a Premier League club is in town.

GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Doncaster Rovers (Palhinha 14)

Spurs break the deadlock in N17 with a sensational goal! A cornerâ€s half cleared by Donny. Palhinha, his back to goal ten yards out, carefully whips an overhead kick into the unguarded net, the keeper having gone walkabout.

Tottenham 0-0 Doncaster. A great chance for Doncaster, who clearly donâ€t intend to die wondering. Damola Ajayi – visiting his parent club tonight – crosses from the right for Toyosi Olusanya, who heads harmlessly wide left from close range. Spurs then counter, and the Johnson-Tel combo again nearly pays off, but the cross from the right is too high for Tel to head home.

Share

Not a great deal going on in any of the early kick-offs … so thank goodness for Will Unwin, who gallops heroically into view on his white horse, setting the scene for tonightâ€s game between Port Vale and Arsenal.

Vale Park is packed and the fans even more eager for an upset after seeing the Arsenal team. Mikel Arteta is not messing about, he wants the job done with limited fuss. The Valiants have been promised fireworks before the match and wouldnâ€t mind a few during it. Vale will make things as difficult for the Gunners as possible but whether that is enough remains to be seen.

Share

Tottenham 0-0 Doncaster. Spurs respond to that brisk Donny start positively, Mathys Tel meeting a left-wing cross wide, then seconds later air-kicking six yards out, when a ball in from the right was begging to be dispatched.

Share

Some early promise for a couple of the League One sides. Manchester City keeper James Trafford nearly gathers a backpass outside his area, but corrects himself just in time; meanwhile at Spurs, Doncaster get on the front foot immediately and take a couple of long-range pokes.

Share

The matches at the Kirklees Stadium, St James†Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium get under way! Excitement and expectation up and down the land. A reminder that the game at Vale Park kicks off at 8pm.

There are over two emails in our bulging pre-match postbag. In fact, weâ€re three from three with Arsenal fans not 100 percent pleasured by Mikel Artetaâ€s selection tonight. Look!

“That Arsenal XI is strong. Worryingly strong. I hope to God Eze doesnâ€t pick up an injury from this one. Also, since Gyokeres hasnâ€t been pulling down trees against City, I thought heâ€d start this one and grab some goals to boost confidence. Very strange†– Kieran McKintosh

“You wouldâ€ve thought that Arteta might have given Gyokeres the chance to lumber on and show his Sporting form; a welcome boost for him and all a corrective to sundry doubters and grumblers. That is, if he does actually show his Sporting form. If not, well perhaps he just didnâ€t get the service, again†– Charles Antaki

“Saka starting?! Does Arteta have a subconscious desire to injure him? Why in gods name start a player just back from injury against Port Vale when a very promising 15 year old is sitting on the bench? Perhaps the prospect of another torn hamstring is just too exciting!†– Mark Kerry

Share

Arsenalâ€s Mikel Arteta speaks to Sky. “Nine changes is a lot … a few starting for the first time for us … a few who deserve minutes … freedom of expression is a big part of our game … you can see by the way we play, flow and dominate games … in relation to the players we have, we play a little bit one way then the other … very excited to see them play … they are fully prepared … it is going to be really tough.â€

Share

Itâ€s pointed out to Spurs manager Thomas Frank that heâ€s picked a strong team. “Yes!†he audibly grins into the Sky microphone. “I try to be transparent … we need a strong team to perform well … looking forward to it … I respect Doncaster … but it is about what we can do … we need to play with intensity and concentration … itâ€s an opportunity to go very far … itâ€s all about tonight … perform … win.â€

Doncaster boss Grant McCann also talks to Sky. “Really looking forward to it … we deserve this opportunity … the players are ready … hopefully theyâ€ll give Tottenham a really good test.â€

Share

Huddersfield boss Lee Grant talks to Sky … “We know the task in front of us … incredibly challenging … incredibly difficult … a highly skilled, technical group of players … we know we are going to be up against it … that doesnâ€t mean we go into the game without any hope … we will look to impose ourselves at times … weâ€ll enjoy the fixture and take it for what it is.â€

… as does Manchester Cityâ€s Pep Guardiola. “Itâ€s a perfect competition for the guys who didnâ€t play lately … not to improve but to get the rhythm … [I like this competition] otherwise you donâ€t win four in a row … impossible … I like the Premier League as well, thatâ€s why we won four in a row, six in eight years, thatâ€s why!†He then grins mischievously and sticks his tongue out at the interviewer. Cheeky Pep! Playful Pep! That raised a titter. Heâ€s clearly in a great mood tonight.

Share

Port Vale boss Darren Moore talks to Sky Sports. “Itâ€s definitely a night to embrace … to savour … to enjoy … but also to be committed and ready to perform … itâ€s about the squad … how the game will ebb and flow … try to start on the front foot … we have experienced boys to bring on … it will be a tough game … can we start well … can we finish it … thereâ€s a generation of Port Vale clubs who havenâ€t seen a Premier League team at Vale Park … so tonight is an honour … the morale around the football club, and the excitement, is there for all to see.â€

Liverpool reaction

Alexander Isak

I could have done better with my first chance. But then itâ€s all about being ready for the next one [which he scored], so Iâ€m happy with that. It was good to get some more minutes but itâ€s a competitive game so the main priority is to win.

I feel good, I feel fit. Itâ€s still early – new club, new teammates – and with each game itâ€s only going to get better.

[On being asked to do sprints on the pitch at half-time] Yeah that was a new one. It was funny. Gotta get fit!

Andy Robertson

We canâ€t keep relying on late goals. We were nowhere near our standards, especially in the first half. Iâ€m delighted for Alex; the first goal is always the hardest. Hopefully there are many more to come.

He was excellent against Atletico and again today. He looks fit to me! Maybe the sports scientists think a little differently. But thatâ€s what we had to do in pre-season as well!

[On the Ekitike red card] Iâ€ll be very surprised if he does it again. Scoring a goal is always emotional and he must have forgotten heâ€d already been booked. The first one was stupidity, for kicking the ball away, and now we miss him for Saturday. Itâ€s silly on his part but heâ€s only young and heâ€ll learn from it.

Carabao Cup results

The shock of the night came at Turf Moor, where League One Cardiff joined Wrexham* and Swansea in the last 16. Imagine.

Full time: Liverpool 2-1 Southampton

Liverpool are through to the last 16 after yet another late winner, their sixth of the season. It was scored by the substitute Hugo Ekitike, who was then sent off for his celebration. Some bloke called Isak scored as well.

Share

“Among the other consequences of Ekitikeâ€s silly moment, the one that I rue the most is that it takes the spotlight off Chiesa,†writes Kári Tulinius. “Heâ€s been brilliant every time Iâ€ve seen him this season. It would be lovely to see find his mislaid form. At his best he cut through defences like a flashlight beam through fog.â€

Thatâ€s a lovely image. His two assists tonight were really superb.

Terrific play from Chiesa, first to read McCarthyâ€s pass and then to pick out Isak, but Southampton should be in front, not behind. Armstrongâ€s chance wasnâ€t the only one; Caspar Jander headed the rebound just wide with Mamardashvili out of the game.

Itâ€s half time in the seven 7.45pm games. The big news is that Lincoln lead Chelsea 1-0, a scoreline that flatters them not one jot. Enzo Maresca will probably have to turn to a bench that includes Estevao, Pedro Neto, Reece James, Marc Cucurella and Moises Caicedo.

Rob Street has given Lincoln the lead– and it doesnâ€t flatter them. Fernandez played a risky pass across the face of the penalty area towards Chalobah, who dithered and was beaten to the ball by Ivan Varfolomeev. He headed it through to Street, who slid the ball calmly past Jorgensen. Lincoln are beating the world champions.

You mean you donâ€t remember the incident? (Erm, thereâ€s no obvious reason. I guess heâ€s the most high-profile/flamboyant player in the Chelsea team; thereâ€s probably also a perception that heâ€s partial to a dive.
