The Warriors’ open practice last week delivered more than drills and shooting — it gave us a priceless sibling moment.

Seth Curry donned No. 30 while Steph sported No. 31, swapping their usual jersey numbers for the day in a playful nod to their shared basketball lineage.

Steph Curry has been a Warrior for life. Drafted by Golden State in 2009, he has become the face of the franchise, a multi-time MVP and champion. He has worn No. 30 for all 16 seasons of his Warriors career, a number thatâ€s become part of his identity as much as his shooting form.

So when his younger brother joined Golden State, one question lingered: what number would Seth Curry take?

He wasnâ€t able to secure No. 30 from Steph.

“I tried to buy it from him,†Seth joked. “He said he didnâ€t need the money.â€Â

Seth actually has worn No. 30 for most of his own career, including recent stints with the Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets. Before that, he spent two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers wearing No. 31, and earlier in his career bounced between 30, 31 and 10 as he moved from team to team.

This NBA season is the first time since Seth entered the league as an undrafted rookie in 2013 that the two have shared a training camp, finally taking the floor as teammates instead of competitors.

The 35-year-old joined the Warriors on an Exhibit 9 contract, which allows him to participate in training camp and the preseason. Because of the NBAâ€s second-apron restrictions, Golden State will need to waive him before finalizing its roster — but the team can re-sign him as early as Nov. 11 while staying under the tax threshold.

The lighthearted jersey swap at open practice gave Warriors fans a glimpse of the brothers†easy chemistry — and a reminder of how rare it is to see both Currys on the same court.

Steph remains the Warriors†cornerstone, while Seth begins a new chapter in familiar territory, wearing a familiar number — just not No. 30.

NEWARK, N.J. — Two of the Hughes brothers are now under long-term contracts with the New Jersey Devils, after defenseman Luke Hughes signed a seven-year contract extension this week and rejoined his superstar brother Jack at training camp Thursday.

Could Quinn Hughes, star defenseman with the Vancouver Canucks, join his brothers in the near future?

Ever since Canucks team president Jim Rutherford said last April that Quinn “wants to play with his brothers,” there’s been speculation about when and where that reunion might happen.

Luke and Jack are now both under contract in New Jersey until 2030, while Quinn will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.

“I think the three of us would all love to play together someday. Whether it’ll happen or not, who knows? We’ll see,” Luke said Thursday. “But I know he loves Vancouver and he’s the captain there. We love being here. You never know. Never say never.”

Luke signed a 7-year, $63 million contract Wednesday that carries a $9 million annual cap hit. The 22-year-old defenseman is entering his fourth NHL season and has 93 points in 155 games, along with two assists in four playoff games.

Luke missed a chunk of training camp during contract talks with the Devils. Quinn Hughes also missed part of the 2021-22 preseason during free-agent contract talks with the Canucks before signing a 6-year, $47.1 million deal with Vancouver. Luke said Quinn offered his perspective as talks with the Devils continued.

“[He said] just stay patient and get what you want. As a family, we decided the deal and we’re really happy of the outcome and really excited to be here for the next seven years,” Luke said.

Jack said he didn’t have much advice to give his brother, given that he’d never been through a “hold out” like Luke had.

“I think it was important for him to get a deal that he’s really comfortable with,” Jack said. “I know he’s going to be ready to go for the season no matter what and you never want to miss time. But most importantly you need a deal you’re comfortable with.”

On top of missing a chunk of training camp, Luke’s preparation for this season was interrupted with his recovery from May shoulder surgery. Devils coach Sheldon Keefe said the team is taking that under consideration in working him back into the lineup.

Luke said he’s been “bag [skating] myself” back home, skating five times a week to get into playing shape. In his first day back in camp, he skated in two consecutive practice sessions to start making up for lost time.

“That is the climb. It’s a bit of a unique situation where not only has he missed camp, but he’s also coming off of a major shoulder surgery since he played last,” Keefe said. “So we want to make sure we give him the appropriate time. But he looks good. He’s been through all the medicals and testing that guys would normally go through at the beginning of camp, and he’s cleared.”

Keefe said he doesn’t see a reason why Luke won’t be ready for the Devils’ regular-season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 9.

Earlier, it was Phil Foden, perhaps City’s most decorated youth graduate of recent years, who once again caught the eye.

The midfielder said last season his struggles were down to off-field issues and carrying an injury, which saw him go on a run of 20 games without scoring.

But the 25-year-old looks like he is approaching the form that saw him collect the Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year awards in 2024.

In five games this season, Foden has scored two goals and provided two further assists, playing a starring role in Wednesday’s win at Accu Stadium.

Guardiola said: “We have seen already Phil in the last few games against Arsenal, Napoli and [Manchester] United, he was really good.

“When the team plays better every player makes his potential but it’s not just today.

“He can play in the pockets perfectly but when he plays a little bit free, he gives you something unique.”

Though this was League One opposition, Foden looked a class above anyone else on the pitch.

The goal he scored against the Terriers had the trademarks of a player that was full of confidence, exchanging passes with another debutant in Divine Mukasa and drilling in an unerring finish.

The 25-year-old was playing his fourth games in 11 days and determined to showcase his talents, conducting the play by spraying the ball around to team-mates.

He showed excellent awareness to lay the ball off for Savinho to smash home the second and secure a passage into the fourth round of the competition, where City will travel to Championship side Swansea.

“Phil Foden was instrumental in everything Manchester City did,” former England international Sue Smith said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It’s great to see him back and playing at this level. Last season was difficult for him with injuries and other things but when he’s at his best he’s unstoppable.”

Teammate Rico Lewis told BBC Radio 5 Live that Foden’s happiness is contributing to his success on the pitch.

“Everyone has seen in previous years how good a player he is,” Lewis said. “The main thing is he has his confidence back and the goals come with that.

“He just needs to carry on doing what he’s doing, most importantly being happy because when he is happy he’s doing well.”

City host Burnley on Saturday followed by trips to Monaco and Brentford before the international break and Foden will be hoping to impress further to try and earn a recall into Thomas Tuchel’s England set-up.

Foden has 45 caps for the Three Lions, with the last of those coming in March against Latvia.

Meanwhile, there was also a return to the team for forgotten England midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who was appearing in a City shirt for the first time since 19 December 2023 at the Club World Cup, which Guardiola called a “good moment”.

Phillips travelled up to Huddersfield from London on Wednesday after becoming a father for the second time to son Ari.

Both Heskey brothers and Phillips will be eyeing up further minutes when City head to Swansea in the next round.

After agreeing to sell their stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, Joey and Jesse Buss are reinvesting their profits in a new endeavor.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and Shams Charania reported the Buss brothers are starting Buss Sports Capital with the goal of “identifying acquisitions and partnerships across the global sports landscape.”

“Our vision is to really go after strategic investments and good partners — specifically sports-related investments,” Joey said. “Buss Sports Capital is not going to compete with our interests in the Lakers or the NBA. This is our first step towards where the future of sports is going to lead us. It is exciting to see what growth opportunities exist — particularly opportunities that we can add value to, given our skill sets.”

Jesse told McMenamin and Charania he sees this as a long-term project.

“I look forward to working with my brother, Joey, for the next 50 years and hopefully this is something that can live through our children,” he said. “That’s what our dad would have wanted.”

In June, the Buss family agreed to sell a controlling stake in the Lakers to Mark Walter in deal that values the franchise at a record-setting $10 billion. The transaction is still pending approval from the NBA’s board of governors.

McMenamin and Charania reported Joey and Jesse, along with Jeanie Buss, will all retain roles with the Lakers once Walter is the majority shareholder. They originally inherited the team from their father, Jerry Buss, in 2013 following his death.

Control of the Lakers was briefly the source of familial drama in 2017 before Jim and Johnny Buss, two of Jerry’s other sons, agreed to cede authority to Jeanie in perpetuity.

Joey is currently Los Angeles’ vice president of research and development, and he’s the alternate governor to fill in for any official NBA matters if Jeanie is unavailable. Jesse is an assistant general manager, a title he has held since September 2015.

At this stage, it’s unclear what types of investment opportunities the Buss brothers will pursue. Once the Lakers’ sale is finalized, Buss Sports Capital won’t have any liquidity problems.

LOS ANGELES — Two of the Buss family brothers are venturing into professional sports beyond the Los Angeles Lakers.

Joey Buss, the Lakers’ alternate governor and vice president of research and development, and Jesse Buss, the team’s assistant general manager, are launching Buss Sports Capital. The new business is an investment firm aimed at identifying acquisitions and partnerships across the global sports landscape.

Joey, 41, and Jesse, 37, worked their way up serving various roles for the Lakers organization, which was purchased by their father, the late Jerry Buss, in 1979 and passed on to his children in a trust after his death in 2013.

In June, the Buss family agreed to sell its controlling stake in the team at a $10 billion franchise valuation to Mark Walter, the Los Angeles Dodgers owner and CEO and chairman of TWG Global. The sale is expected to be ratified by the NBA’s board of governors in the coming months, sources told ESPN.

Both brothers will remain with the Lakers after the sale is finalized, with their older sister, Jeanie Buss, continuing to serve as the primary team governor for the foreseeable future, sources said.

“Our vision is to really go after strategic investments and good partners — specifically sports-related investments,” Joey Buss told ESPN. “Buss Sports Capital is not going to compete with our interests in the Lakers or the NBA. This is our first step towards where the future of sports is going to lead us. It is exciting to see what growth opportunities exist — particularly opportunities that we can add value to, given our skill sets.”

Buss Sports Capital has partnered with CAA Evolution to lead the transaction process, and EM Securities will serve as the organization’s banking partner, sources said.

Both brothers have honed their careers with the Lakers focusing on talent acquisition and development, with Joey serving as the team president and CEO of the South Bay Lakers — the Lakers’ G League affiliate — and Jesse involved in the draft process year-round as the Lakers’ director of scouting.

“I look forward to working with my brother, Joey, for the next 50 years and hopefully this is something that can live through our children,” Jesse Buss told ESPN. “That’s what our dad would have wanted.”

MONTREAL — The first rule of potentially surviving prison is to pick the biggest, baddest man in the yard and immediately challenge him to a fight.

If you survive that — and thatâ€s a big if — no one else will mess with you.

Seems to be the logic that Florian Xhekaj applied in deciding to drop his gloves with Philadelphia Flyers winger Nicolas Deslauriers in his first pre-season game with the Montreal Canadiens this year.

“I probably wouldnâ€t have fought that guy,†said his brother Arber.

Let the record show that Arber did fight that guy back in 2022, when he was 21 years old — the same age Florian is right now.

The intentions were also the same.

“Itâ€s good to get it over with,†Arber said, “and it also gives him confidence to know that he can hang in there.â€

Florian more than hung in there.

Arber, on the other hand, watched from the bench, fighting off a wave of anxiety as Deslauriers freed up his right hand.

“I was scared for a moment,†he said. “Iâ€ve got to realize that heâ€s all grown up now. Heâ€s my size, heâ€s not a little boy anymore.â€

Florian Xhekaj, whoâ€s now six-foot-four, 220 pounds, proved it by scoring a goal and surviving a fight with one of the most feared enforcers of the last decade.

He was also the first Xhekaj to make his mother, Simona, cry in the stands.

Cameras caught her shedding another tear when Arber scored the empty-net goal that sealed this 4-2 win over the Flyers.

One can only imagine how Simona felt after driving six hours from Hamilton to watch her two boys play their first-ever game together as members of the Canadiens.

The brothers both said the same thing about how their father, Jack, mustâ€ve felt missing it after he was unable to get off work to be there in person.

“Heâ€s going to be pissed all week,†said Arber.

He added that Jack would likely be up all night after all that excitement.

“It doesnâ€t happen often,†said Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis. “I think just being a parent, having three boys, itâ€s a cool experience when I watch my two boys play each other in college. I can just imagine what itâ€s like for the two boys to play together in the NHL, in Montreal, and being far but close enough to be there. Itâ€s amazing. Itâ€s a special moment. And Iâ€m glad that they were able to share it together, but also share it with their family. And I think itâ€s a tight family, so itâ€s nice to see them have that experience.â€

It was a fun one for everyone, including us.

It also wrapped up 24 hours of observations we made through the first two pre-season games the Canadiens played, so letâ€s get to those.

The play was coming towards him at full speed — a two-on-one turned two-on-none by an ill-timed dive from Canadiens teammate Jake Evans — but he remained locked into the puck carrier until the very end. Fowler didnâ€t cheat, instead, he just waited to make his push.

That patience is the mark of a composed goaltender, one who knows relying solely on anticipation is a foolâ€s game against the best and most deceptive players in the world. And that patience is a rare quality for a 20-year-old playing his first minutes of NHL pre-season action to possess.

Heâ€s so composed,†said Brendan Gallagher after watching Fowler enter Mondayâ€s game cold off the bench to make 13 saves — including that 10-beller off Avery Hayes— and three more in the shootout to help the Canadiens secure a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“Heâ€s one of those goalies that gives you a lot of confidence, because thereâ€s not a lot of movement. Heâ€s always in position, not a lot of loose pucks in front of his feet,†Gallagher continued. “Those are the guys you like to play in front of. Makes it look easy. Obviously, itâ€s a tough job that heâ€s got. But he makes it look easy and gives you a lot of confidence to play in front of him.â€

Thatâ€s what Fowler has been doing since well before getting drafted by the Canadiens with the 69th pick in 2023. The Floridian was a United States Hockey League MVP, Clark Cup champion and World Junior-A Challenge gold medalist.

And then he won a world junior championship and played two sensational seasons with Boston College before being named the NCAAâ€s best goaltender.

Fowler made his professional debut with the Laval Rocket at the end of last season, posting a .914 save percentage and winning two of three games he appeared in before going 3-3 in the playoffs. And he looked anything but uncomfortable in his NHL debut on Monday.

“What I like about him is heâ€s calm but not meek,†responded Marc Denis, when we asked the former-NHL-goaltender-turned-RDS-analyst what stands out to him about the kid.  “Some guys can turn into victims with traffic and action in front of them, but he doesnâ€t shrink in those moments. He faces them.â€

Fowler explained why after the game.

“I think, for me, itâ€s easy to stay calm because I just love to play hockey,†he started. “I love to go out on the ice, whether itâ€s in front of 20,000 people or by myself. I think hockeyâ€s just what makes me calm. A lot of people get wrapped up into different things, but Iâ€m one to let the game come to me and just be a hockey player.â€

Thatâ€s what Fowler did on that overtime rush.

Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but this kid understands what will eventually make his dream come true.

After punching up Samuel Poulin in Mondayâ€s game, Davidson explained how his development into an edgy, tough customer began as a youngster with the Western Hockey Leagueâ€s Seattle Thunderbirds.

“I have to give credit to my junior coach, Matt Oâ€Dette,†Davidson said. “I was 16 when he taught me how to play in that fourth-line role. Growing up, I never had to do anything like that. Almost didnâ€t make the team as a 16-year-old, but I did what I had to do just to get in the lineup. You have to get noticed every night, and thereâ€s no easy way to do it. Hopefully, goals and points come, but thatâ€s something easy you can do to get noticed every night — stick on puck, go hit someone on the forecheck, make it easier on your linemates to play — and thatâ€s what has made me who I am today and how I play. I give a lot of credit to him for just teaching me how to play in those gritty roles.â€

The Edmonton native can play, too.

Josh Anderson was saying after the game that Gallagher, whoâ€s also from Edmonton, told him he loves Davidsonâ€s game. He said Gallagher told him to watch out for him.

Anderson did and was blown away by what Davidson did with his fists.

“I loved that,†he said.

“I thought it was a great fight. There was no hesitation,†he said. “I think heâ€s a gamer. Ever since Iâ€ve seen him play, I feel heâ€s a gamer. Heâ€ll do whatever the game needs him to do. I think heâ€s hungry, he wants to play at this level, heâ€ll do whatever, and he actually has the scoring touch too. Weâ€ve seen it in years past, obviously, in Laval.â€

Davidson piled up 35 goals and 61 points in 107 games with the Rocket over the last two seasons.

And he played with the type of bite the Canadiens could use more of.

“I feel as a team, I love our skill level and everything. And I think the way we play together, I love that too. But we need to add some sandpaper to our game a little bit, and itâ€s not necessarily just (fighting),†said St. Louis. “Itâ€s not necessarily just one guy, or two guys, itâ€s collectively, as a pack. Can we be a little tougher to play against? Not just strategically, but physically?â€

Weâ€d bet on Davidson being a player who helps them do that down the line.

The 23-year-old is tracking in that direction.

— David Reinbacher didnâ€t get an assist on Florian Xhekajâ€s goal to make it 2-0 against the Flyers, but he started the whole play by rushing the puck out of harmâ€s way and out of Montrealâ€s zone.

The type of subtle, effective play Reinbacherâ€s game is made of.

The fifth overall pick in 2023 was burned by speedster Anthony Richard for a goal.

But another controlled breakout from Reinbacher helped Nick Suzuki make the score 3-1 against Philadelphia.

Between him, Xhekaj, Davidson, Fowler, Owen Beck, Oliver Kapanen, Adam Engstrom and Joshua Roy, the Canadiens have a lot of players knocking on the NHL door.

At least one of them will break through to start the season. The rest will fight for chances to be called up while likely fueling Laval to another successful season.

— Montrealâ€s top line of Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky took 53 seconds to connect for a goal in pre-season. This will be their fourth season playing together, and it shows.

Tuesdayâ€s game was childâ€s play for them, as they combined for two goals and a 17-1 edge in shot attempts against the Flyers.

— Lane Hutson attempted 3.6 shots per game in his Calder Trophy-winning season. He had four through the first 40 minutes and eight by the end of Tuesdayâ€s game.

We didnâ€t get a chance to speak with him, but it’s probably not a stretch to assume heâ€ll be trying to shoot more this season.
