Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have had moments this season where they look like championship contenders, but it’s been a mostly unremarkable year for the team that has reached three consecutive Super Bowls.
After a loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Mahomes took the blame and said he and his squad need to be more consistent.
“I think we’re really talented and we’ve got a lot of great players, but it’s about being more consistent. I think it starts with me,” Mahomes told reporters. “There’s times where I’m firing and we’re moving the ball down the field at ease. But there’s times where we go in spurts where I miss a throw or a [pass]-protection call.
“We haven’t been consistent enough to win games. It starts with me.”
Mahomes struggled for a second consecutive game, throwing for 276 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 29-of-45 passing. That performance came after he completed just 44.1 percent of his passes in a loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The Chiefs fell to 5-5 with the loss as their playoff hopes continue to dwindle. If Kansas City fails to reach the postseason, it will be the team’s first playoff absence since 2014.
The Chiefs’ chances of winning a 10th consecutive division title are almost certainly over as the 9-2 Broncos continue to roll.
Kansas City will face one of the NFL’s best teams next week when it takes on the Indianapolis Colts. Mahomes and the Chiefs will look to establish some consistency in that game.
Cameron Allard, Jaxon Jacobson and Joby Baumuller each scored two goals as the Brandon Wheat Kings took a 9-4 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday in Western Hockey League action.
Carter Klippenstein, Nicholas Johnson and Jimmy Egan provided the rest of the offence for Brandon (7-7-1). Filip Ruzicka made 27 saves.
Jace McFaul, Stepan Kuryachenkov, Marek Rocak and Caleb Potter scored for Swift Current (6-8-1). Joey Rocha surrendered six goals on 20 shots before exiting at 7:31 of the second period, with Aiden Eskit stopped 16 of the 19 shots he faced in relief.
The Wheat Kings came out of the first period with a 4-3 lead before really taking off. Brandon scored four straight goals to make it a five-goal game entering the third period.
Both teams went 1 for 3 on the power play in the contest.
EDMONTON — Joe Iginla led the way with two goals as the Edmonton Oil Kings topped the Red Deer Rebels 7-3.
Jensen Marsh, Poul Andersen, Ethan MacKenzie, Max Curran and Andrew O’Neill also scored for Edmonton (13-4-1-1), which turned a 2-2 game into a 5-2 contest with three straight goals in the second period.
Beckett Hamilton, Samuel Drancak and Talon Brigley replied for Red Deer (5-10-0-2).
PORTLAND, Ore. — Dmitri Yakutsenak and Terik Parascak each had a goal and two assists as the Prince George Cougars defeated the Portland Winterhawks 6-2.
Jett Lajoie, Carson Carels, Kayden Lemire and Riley Ashe also scored for Prince George (10-6-0), which scored five unanswered goals to rebound from a 2-1 first-period deficit.
Reed Brown and Alex Weiermair scored for Portland (9-7-0).
MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Pavel McKenzie scored twice, Mathieu Lajoie had a goal and two assists and the Moose Jaw Warriors earned a 6-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen.
Dominik Pavlik, Lynden Lakovic and Jan Trefny also contributed to the scoring for Moose Jaw (8-8-1), which held 3-0 and 3-2 leads before scoring three unanswered goals to seal the win.
Ethan Moore and Kale Dach replied for Calgary (10-4-2).
PENTICTON, B.C. — Tij Iginla had two goals and one assist as the Kelowna Rockets used a four-goal third period to fuel a 6-2 win over the Penticton Vees.
Tomas Poletin, Carson Wetsch, Dawson Gerwing and Kayden Longley added the others for Kelowna (6-5-1-1), which was up 2-0 after the first period before entering the third tied 2-2.
Tristan Petersen and Louis Wehmann replied for Penticton (8-6-1-2).
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Jackson Kostiuk scored the eventual winner as the Prince Albert Raiders topped the Lethbridge Hurricanes 2-1.
Kostiuk scored at 6:01 of the second period to give Prince Albert (11-0-3) a 2-0 lead, with Brayden Dube opening the scoring at 7:27 of the first period.
Shane Smith made it a one-goal game for Lethbridge (4-13-0-1) at 13:25 of the second.

The Houston Texans will be without their starting quarterback for some time after a recent injury.
C.J. Stroud has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after suffering a concussion in a Week 9 loss to the Denver Broncos, head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters Wednesday.
Stroud was trying to get a first down with his legs, but slid short before taking a hit to the chest from Broncos cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine. The hit caused Stroud’s head to hit the ground.
The news comes as the Texans sit 3-5 on the season are fading out of the playoff race in the AFC South.
Stroud, who’s in his third season in the NFL, has thrown for 1,702 yards,11touchdowns and five interceptions this year.
Stroud had a tremendous first campaign in 2023 to win Offensive Rookie of the Year behind 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions, but his production took a hit in Year 2 as he had 3,727 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
He’s hoping to hit his stride in Year 3, but his recent injury could throw a wrench in his plans.
With Stroud sidelined, the Texans will turn to backup quarterback Davis Mills under center. Mills was Houston’s starter in 2021 and 2022 but has spent the last few years playing behind Stroud.

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was ruled out with a concussion after being hit hard by Denver Broncos’ Kris Abrams-Draine.
Stroud had been taken to the locker room for evaluation after suffering the first-half injury.
Davis Mills replaced Stroud on the field and remained under center for the remainder of the game.
Stroud, 23, is Houston’s franchise cornerstone. He had an incredible rookie season in 2023, throwing for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions, earning a Pro Bowl nod and the Offensive Rookie of the Year award in the process.
He didn’t take quite the jump expected in the 2024 season, throwing for 3,727 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 picks, though poor offensive line play, questionable play-calling and a rash of injuries to his wideouts didn’t exactly help his cause.
Regardless, Stroud has now led the Texans to the playoffs in two straight seasons, with a 2-2 postseason record. He’s played well in those contests, throwing for 976 yards, four touchdowns and an interception, though to this point the Texans haven’t quite been up to the caliber of the AFC’s top teams.
The hope, of course, is that Stroud would take a major leap in year three, bolstered by a reworked offensive line and a few new weapons out wide, including veteran Christian Kirk and rookie Jayden Higgins.
“The idea behind adding those guys was to just add some veteran guys who have played for a while and have done it the right way,” head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters about the offseason acquisitions of offensive lineman like Cam Robinson, Trent Brown, Laken Tomlinson and Ed Ingram. “Guys who play hard. [I] really wanted to enhance competition in the room.”
That hasn’t exactly happened, as Houston’s offense continues to disappoint. Regardless, keeping Stroud healthy and on the field is imperative—and was the basis for those moves—so Sunday’s injury is obviously a major concern.
Mills would remain at quarterback if Stroud is forced to miss more time.

The NFL reportedly suspended Denver Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw for one game without pay for an altercation with an official following Sunday’s win over the New York Giants.
After an appeal, the NFL announced the suspension was upheld:
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported Monday the suspension came for the unsportsmanlike conduct with the league explaining “After the conclusion of the Giants-Broncos game, Greenlaw chased after referee Brad Allen and verbally threatened him as he tried to leave the field.”
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo shared more details:
The video shows Greenlaw seeking out the official and yelling at him as his Broncos teammates celebrate Wil Lutz’s game-winning field goal.
The linebacker finished with six tackles and a quarterback hit in what was his first game with Denver. He signed with the AFC West team during the offseason after spending his first six years with the San Francisco 49ers but was on injured reserve because of a quad injury.
Denver signed him to a three-year, $31.5 million contract after he posted 120 or more tackles in back-to-back seasons in 2022 and 2023. However, injuries limited him to just two games last season and prevented him from starting the 2025 campaign on time.
Greenlaw’s incident came at the end of an unbelievable game.
It seemed as if New York was in full control when it took a 19-0 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Broncos scored 33 points in the final 15 minutes. Jaxson Dart’s ugly interception deep in Giants’ territory helped make the comeback possible, but Bo Nix deserves plenty of credit as well.
He threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in an astounding fourth quarter, the last of which put the home team ahead with fewer than two minutes remaining. Yet Dart led his own touchdown drive after that to give the Giants a two-point lead with 37 seconds remaining.
However, that was still enough time for Nix to get Denver into field-goal range, and Lutz delivered on the kick as time expired.
The Broncos have plenty of momentum even with Greenlaw’s suspension thanks to four straight wins. Next up is a home game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Denver Broncos edge-rusher Nik Bonitto took shots at New York Giants pass-rushers Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux on social media following his team’s 33-32 comeback win.
Bonitto deleted the post, but not before it was captured in screen shots and shared:
The trash talk seemed to stem from Denver linebacker Jonathon Cooper taking a dig at Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart during a press conference:
Bonitto then sparred with Giants’ fans online, calling them a “delusional fan base.”
It all caught the attention of Thibodeaux, who had his own response on social media:
Carter, meanwhile, had his own thoughts on all of the trash talk.
“Yeah, we believe in our guys. Really don’t want to put too much into it—we’re ready for Sunday, and we’re gonna settle everything on the field,” he told reporters. “Yeah, we’re going to settle everything; it don’t really matter no more.”
It was a lot of talk from defenders who promptly watched both offenses put up massive points. Bonitto had two tackles and a quarterback hit on the day, though Cooper was more impactful (three tackles, 1.5 sacks, two quarterback hits).
On the other side, Carter had three tackles and Thibodeaux had one tackle. The Broncos had the last laugh, as Bo Nix and the offense scored a staggering 33 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 19-0 deficit heading into the final frame.
It was a brutal loss for the Giants, only heightened by the war of words that preceded it.

Jaxson Dart and the New York Giants blew a 19-0 lead in the fourth quarter to Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos on the road with a game-winning field goal, losing 33-32.Â
With the last-second loss, the Giants fell to 2-5, behind Dart, who had carried them to a 2-2 record since taking over for veteran Russell Wilson in Week 4, including an immediate win over the previously undefeated Los Angeles Chargers.
Nix finished 27-of-50 for 279 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with his former Oregon teammates Troy Franklin and RJ Harvey for scoring passes. He also ran in two touchdowns himself, adding 48 yards on the ground.
Meanwhile, Dart finished 15-of-33 for 283 yards, three touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and one interception, which proved costly in the fourth quarter.
Dart and the Giants’ defense were criticized for allowing 33 fourth-quarter points in Denver’s comeback.
Denver got off to a rough start, punting on their first four possessions and turning the ball over on downs before a Nix sack took them into halftime, trailing 13-0.
The third quarter mirrored the first half, with Denver punting on both possessions to enter the fourth quarter trailing 19-0, before the Broncos finally found the end zone to open the fourth.
Another touchdown from New York seemed to seal the game, but Denver found their rhythm, scoring on a drive and forcing an interception that led to another touchdown, cutting the deficit to three points.
Forcing a three-and-out gave Denver the ball back with 2:42 remaining, and they scored once more, going 4-of-4 for touchdowns on their fourth-quarter possessions to take a 30-26 lead.Â
New York stormed down the field for a touchdown, leaving just 1:51 on the clock, but the Broncos executed a perfect two-minute drill to win the game on a field goal.
The Giants’ schedule does not ease up as they travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday.

LOS ANGELES — Cal State LA’s women’s volleyball team came up short Friday night in a first-place showdown between California Collegiate Athletic Association unbeatens.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first two sets and saw a spirited comeback come up short in a 25-16, 25-12, 24-26, 25-20 loss to Cal Poly Pomona in the CCAA Game of the Week in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-4, 8-1 CCAA) had a nine-match winning streak snapped, while Cal Poly Pomona (11-4, 9-0 CCAA) won its ninth straight match with the four-set win.
Neither team had lost since Cal State LA beat Cal Poly Pomona in a five-set match in the finale of the Cal State LA Invitational last match. The Broncos, with their win on Friday, still haven’t lost since then.
The Golden Eagles now trail the Broncos by one game as the conference hits the halfway point of the season. The teams will not meet again during the regular season.
Samarah DaCoud had 19 kills and six digs and hit .326 for the Golden Eagles, while Ayjah Landers had eight kills, three blocks and seven digs.
Sarah Ybarra led Cal Poly Pomona with 21 kills and five blocks, while Elle Walker had 13 kills and Charlotte Koerber had 10 kills and 19 digs.
Madison Clark had a team-high five blocks, while Arielle Chandler had 15 set assists and six digs.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 61-40 advantage in kills and a 13-9 edge in blocks. The Broncos outhit the Golden Eagles, .333-.125. The Golden Eagles had five service aces – two by Jameson Sanders – and nine errors, while the Broncos had six aces and 10 errors.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and dropped the first two sets before storming back and making things very interesting. Cal State LA faced an early 5-2 deficit in the third turning things around. The Golden Eagles took a 17-12 lead after a kill and ace by DaCoud, but then had to battle late to stay in the match. Cal Poly Pomona tied it at 20-20 before a kill by Zuhal Cetin, a block by DaCoud and Rachel Lowe and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 23-20 lead. The Broncos tied it at 23-23 and 24-24 before a block by Clark and DaCoud and a kill by Landers pushed the match to a fourth set.
Cal State LA fell into a 12-7 deficit before a service error, an attack error, back-to-back aces from Sanders and a block by Landers and Lowe evened the set. The set was tied for a final time at 18-18, but back-to-back kills by Ybarra gave the Broncos a 20-18 lead and, after Cal State LA got as close as 21-20, the Broncos scored the final four points to close out the match.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home match against San Francisco State on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Philadelphia Eagles wideout DeVonta Smith said the Birds weren’t “on the same page” at times in the passing game during Sunday’s 21-17 loss against the Denver Broncos. It’s become a theme for Philly’s offense this season.
“We made improvements in certain areas,” Smith added. “We still could be a lot better. Shot ourselves in the foot a lot.”
Smith suggested that some of the in-game signals between quarterback Jalen Hurts and his pass-catchers weren’t quite there.
“There’s times where we’re looking at him, and he may give a signal before or after we look, and ultimately we have to be on the same page,” he noted. “We have to see that signal no matter what. It was just little things within the routes. He may have seen something pre-snap and sometimes we didn’t see it.”
Hurts, however, said he “doesn’t remember any of those things happening” and that he would need to discuss any specifics with Smith to understand what he meant.
Whatever the case may be, the Eagles are loaded with playmakers offensively but have continued to be pretty mediocre on that side of the ball. Hurts did throw for 280 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, but the offense failed to move the ball for most of the second half, blowing a 17-3 lead. And coming into Sunday, the Eagles ranked 31st in passing yards and were incredibly inconsistent.
Until Sunday, it wasn’t hurting the team in the win column, as the Birds started 4-0. But it finally bit them against the Broncos, and it’s clear something isn’t quite jelling on the offensive side of the ball for the defending Super Bowl champs right now.
After all of the noise surrounding them throughout the week, the Philadelphia Eagles fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 21-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
The defeat marks Philadelphia’s first loss since Week 16 last season. This is the first loss in a game that Jalen Hurts didn’t leave early due to injury in more than a year when the Eagles were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 29, 2024.
Hurts actually had his best passing game of the season by yardage. The reigning Super Bowl MVP lost this game despite Hurts having his best passing game of the season. He finished 23-of-38 for 280yards and two touchdowns.
Hurts’ longest throw of the day was a 52-yard strike to DeVonta Smith, who finished with a season-high 114yards on eight catches. He also had a 47-yard touchdown pass to Saquon Barkley.
A.J. Brown, who was at the center of much of last week’s discussion, once again had minimal impact on a game with five catches for 43 yards.
The Eagles, who have mastered the art of running out the clock with a late lead, saw their 14-point advantage in the fourth quarter evaporate quickly.
The Broncos scored touchdowns on back-to-back possessions in the final period, then converted a two-point conversion after the second one to take an 18-17 lead with 7:36 remaining. They added a field goal with just over one minute left to play to force the Eagles to get a touchdown to win.
Philadelphia looked like it was going to immediately respond on its ensuing possession, but an illegal shift penalty on fourth-and-4 negated a 30-yard catch by Smith. Nick Sirianni elected to punt the ball back to the Broncos with just over five minutes left to play.
The Eagles came really close to getting the game-winning touchdown on the final play when Hurts’ pass hit Smith in the hands before getting knocked away.

Eagles Lose 1st Game 😱
The officials didn’t help matters by appearing to miss a pass interference call on Dallas Goedert on the final drive that would have put the ball around the 10-yard line with nine seconds to play.
Fans were once again not pleased with what they saw from the Eagles offense.
All of the handwringing about Hurts and the passing game is ignoring how much the rushing attack is struggling in Philadelphia right now. Barkley had more receiving yardage on his touchdown catch than he did rushing yards in the entire game (30 on six carries).
Barkley has now been held under 100 rushing yards in each of the first five games this season, matching his total from all of 2024 in 16 games. His six carries on Sunday were his fewest in a game as a member of the Eagles.
Even accounting for the strength of Denver’s defense, it’s odd that the Eagles abandoned the run to this extent. They only had a total of 11 carries in the game, compared to 38 pass attempts for Hurts.
It’s too early to say that this season is going in the same direction as 2023 when everything collapsed after a 10-1 start—there’s little chance of the defense being as bad as that group from two years ago—but there seem to be some parallel vibes right now.
The Eagles have a short week before they take on the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Thursday. If their struggles continue in that game against a division opponent with a rookie quarterback, the panic meter will hit off-the-charts levels for the defending Super Bowl champs.
