Since the start of May, Liverpool have conceded 2+ goals in more Premier League games than any other side with nine, while they have conceded 14 goals in their nine league games this season. In the previous campaign they did not concede their 14th goal until their 16th game.
Liverpool’s midfield was non-existent, while hope that £116m Florian Wirtz had sparked into life with an improved performance in the 5-1 Champions League win at Eintracht Frankfurt was extinguished here.
The German missed a glorious first-half chance and then replaced by a defender, Joe Gomez, with seven minutes left and Brentford 3-1 up.
It was quite the verdict from Slot on the influence and impact of his summer signing. The verdict from Brentford’s supporters was predictable as he departed, to chants of “what a waste of money”.
Mohamed Salah showed one flash of the old brilliance to give Liverpool hope they did not deserve in a frantic finale, but it was otherwise another poor performance from one of the club’s all-time greats, who is struggling for confidence and inspiration.
It was also a night of little reward for striker Hugo Ekitike, the one summer arrival who has flourished, as he had no service worthy of the name in the absence of the injured £125m buy Alexander Isak and midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.
Slot could not hide from the evidence before his own eyes as he told BBC’s Match of the Day: “It was a disappointing result and a disappointing performance as well.
“Conceding three goals is far too much if you want to win a game of football. First one was a set-piece, second is a counter-attack which is one of the things Brentford are really good at.
“What I have to do is look at what we do wrong and what we do right. I have a clear idea of where we have to improve, but that hasn’t been the case in other games. We didn’t do the basics right.”
Slot will have to find the answers and quickly.
Liverpool’s next four games are against Crystal Palace at Anfield in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, before another home league game against Aston Villa. Real Madrid then come to Anfield in the Champions League, before a visit to Manchester City – where you can be sure Erling Haaland will be licking his lips if he faces a defence as feeble as this.
Liverpool have a team with quality, but no shape, with Wirtz still trying to fit in, offering encouragement to any opponents with ambition. The near-£450m spend in the summer has not yet offered anything in the way of improvement or progress.
At the moment, given their struggles, Liverpool’s much-discussed blip appears to be getting that victory at Eintracht Frankfurt – unthinkable when you recall their smooth progress last season and finishing 10 points clear in top spot.
For Slot and Liverpool, this was a chastening experience and further disappointment could follow should Arsenal beat Crystal Palace on Sunday to increase the gap between them to seven points.

GOAL! Brentford 1-0 Liverpool (Ouattara 5)
The long throw works a treat this time! Kayode hurls a beast from the left, Ajer heads it across goal and Ouattara hooks a volley past Mamardashvili from five yards. Smart finish, and to be honest Iâ€m not sure how you defend that.

Hello and welcome to live, minute-by-minute coverage of Brentford v Liverpool at the Gtech Community Stadium. Both teams into this game after emphatic away victories in the week – Brentford at West Ham on Monday, Liverpool in Frankfurt on Wednesday.
Liverpoolâ€s task tonight is to arrest a run of three straight league defeats and reignite their title challenge. A win would move them back to second place, a point behind Arsenal having played a game more. With the way Arsenal are playing, Liverpool wonâ€t want any more slip-ups.

Brentford are once again in the midst of an indifferent Premier League campaign, with Keith Andrews’ side going steady.
The Bees brushed aside West Ham United in their last outing 2-0, thanks to goals from both Igor Thiago and Mathias Jensen.
Liverpool finally ended their rut with victory in Europe a few days ago, with Eintracht Frankfurt on the end of a 5-1 humbling with Florian Wirtz finally registering his first couple of goal contributions for the club.
Arne Slot’s men will hope to build on that win in West London, but could have their work cut out against an often tricky Brentford side.

Brentford vs Liverpool: Premier League preview
After cruising to a 2-0 success at beleaguered West Ham last time out, Brentford are targeting consecutive wins for the first time since April and May last season under Thomas Frank.
The Bees managed 15 shots in the first half of Monday’s game alone – their joint-most in the opening 45 minutes of any Premier League match, previously reaching that figure at home to Burnley in October 2023, which shows Andrews is starting to get his message across.
Main man in attack Thiago seems to be stepping up to the job after exits for both Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, with the forward hitting the target with exactly half of his shots in the Premier League in 2025-26 (9 of 18).
In terms of injuries, the Bees will be without Aaron Hickey and Gustavo Gomes, with both marked doubtful ahead of the meeting with the Merseysiders.
Liverpool will be happy their four-game winless run didn’t extend to five, having hammered Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week.
Their does continue to be questions around Alexander Isak’s form and fitness, with the former Newcastle United man taken off at half time in Germany.
The Sweden international has only one goal to his name so far this season and is yet to get off the mark in the Premier League for his new side.
Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate both scored for Slot’s side against the Bundesliga outfit, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike also on the scoresheet.

Brentfordâ€s last away game – a 3-1 defeat to Fulham – was exactly a month ago, and since then theyâ€ve beaten Manchester United and lost to City at home. Appearing on Monday Night Football, Keith Andrews reveals he is going with three up top, having largely used a 5-3-2 setup in recent games. He also plans to continue embracing pace and chaos, telling Sky “we handle it better than a lot of other teamsâ€.

Nuno has sprung some surprises in that line-up, with youngster Ollie Scarles in at left-back and Andy Irving making just his second Premier League start. With Niclas Füllkrug injured, itâ€s unclear who will start as centre-forward – my best guess would be Jarrod Bowen, but Crysencio Summerville is also capable of stepping into that role.

Preamble
Welcome to the Nuno Zone. West Ham, the team currently managed by Nuno EspÃrito Santo, kick off here 19th in the table, sandwiched between two other clubs he previously managed – Wolves and Nottingham Forest, where the wheels have fallen off spectacularly since he left just under six weeks ago.
Nuno might still look like the man who walked away unscathed from an escalating bin fire, but West Hamâ€s next four games might be crucial if he is to do what everyone expects and carry them clear of danger in a sensible fashion. They face four of the five teams immediately above the Nuno Zone with a trip to Leeds before home assignments against Newcastle and Burnley.
Turning around West Hamâ€s awful home form is top of Nunoâ€s to-do list: almost a month into his tenure, this is his first game in charge at the London Stadium. Tonightâ€s opponents at least have an equally poor away record – no points from three games, including a defeat to Nunoâ€s Forest in the distant fog of August.
Head-to-head form is very much in Brentfordâ€s favour, though: in eight Premier League meetings, West Ham have won just once. Keith Andrews†side will also sense a chance to move away from danger tonight. Kick-off: 8pm BST.

Pep Guardiola was thankful his Manchester City team has Erling Haaland scoring goals and Gianluigi Donnarumma stopping them after victory at Brentford came at the cost of another Rodri injury.
“I have an incredible striker and keeper,†Guardiola said, the Norwegianâ€s ninth-minute goal proving the winner. Haalandâ€s form is reaching the levels of Cityâ€s 2022-23 treble season, the No 9 scoring in a ninth consecutive game. “Heâ€s the best,†said his manager. “The year of the treble, he scored – what? – 50 million goals? I think heâ€s part of the club now, heâ€s settled. He feels now that itâ€s mine.â€
On Donnarummaâ€s crucial save from Igor Thiago, Guardiola said: “This guy starts to play at the highest level at 17. When they told me heâ€s 26 itâ€s like heâ€s had centuries playing football. His composure, his presence. With clubs who play good you get one piece of action and he did it today. One against one.â€
Guardiola passed the personal milestone of 250 Premier League wins, surpassing Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger in reaching that total in a record 349 matches. “I will invite them to a good dinner, maybe not in Manchester, somewhere sunnier,†he said of those legendary managers. “Or in Manchester. Itâ€s an honour and a pleasure to be part of Premier League history. I say thank you to the club and the players and the staff I had. We did it quicker and faster. Now letâ€s go to 250 games more.â€
On Rodriâ€s hamstring issue, the latest setback after a cruciate knee injury last season, Guardiola said: “I would love to have Rodri every three days but after one year it happens all the time, it is so demanding. That is why we tried to be gentle, play for 60-65 minutes but it cannot happen more.â€

Keith Andrews, Brentfordâ€s manager, was pleased his team improved after Cityâ€s first-half dominance to threaten until the full-time whistle. “What weâ€re trying to do is bring a team together, a club together, after so many changes,†he said. “I think itâ€s growing. I think you could see that in the second half performance today against top-level opposition.â€

On those teams
Jordan Henderson has earned a place in Thomas Tuchelâ€s England squad again as we head into the international break.Itâ€s a decision that would have raised eyebrows a couple of months but seems entirely justified based on the midfielderâ€s recent form. Hendoâ€s defence splitting through ball for Igor Thiago last week was a thing of beauty.
His counterpart Phil Foden misses out despite his rich vein of form. Pep Guardiola said: “If he [Foden] keeps on playing like he is, then he will be back [in the England squad].†Heâ€s scored six goals in three games against Brentford at the Gtech Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Manchester City manager himself said of their first few games of the season:
“The improvement can be better, reading what the opponent does, spaces to attack, the feeling weâ€re creating again, the tempo and pace thatâ€s really good and attack more fluid and more consistently, we can do some movements that we can do better, and I love that.â€

On the eve of a potentially historic result for Pep Guardiola, the Brentford manager Keith Andrews reflected on the Manchester City managerâ€s legacy:
“Heâ€s probably been the best manager of the last 15 years, in the modern era; the way heâ€s coached the game, the way heâ€s changed the way the game is perceived and played at different clubs and in different countries.â€

Preamble
Hello and welcome to minute-by-minute coverage of this Premier League game between Brentford and Manchester City at the Gtech Stadium.Todayâ€s match is the battle of the No 9s.
In the red corner is Igor Thiago. Up until Antoine Semenyoâ€s heroics against Fulham on Friday, the Brazilian was the joint-second highest scorer in the league with four goals in six games. Heâ€s remarkably efficient with a 40% goal conversion rate, as his first goal against Manchester United highlighted.
In the blue corner is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian has been Manchester Cityâ€s brightest spark this season. Heâ€s scored 17 goals in 10 games for club and country and is once again doing Haaland things. Heâ€s never scored at the Gtech before though so heâ€ll be keen to break his duck.
A win for Keith Andrewâ€s side would make it back to back wins against the two Manchester teams. For Pep Guardiola, today is a chance to record a 250th Premier League win as Manchester City manager. A win would make him the fastest manager to achieve such a feat with one Premier League club.

Watch Brentford vs Manchester United in the Premier League’s first clash of the weekend on Saturday, with all the details here on live streams and TV broadcasts globally.
Brentford were comprehensively beaten by local rivals Fulham last weekend and now have just one win to boast at the start of the new 2025/26 Premier League campaign.
The Bees seem to be struggling defensively, and their goals in attack have also dried up after the exits of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa.
Manchester United, on the other hand, will be buoyed by their second win of the campaign, a gritty 2-1 success over Chelsea in which both teams finished the game with ten men.
Benjamin Sesko was withdrawn at halftime, and the Slovenian is still waiting for his first goal in a United shirt, after a string of less-than-convincing performances.

Brentford vs Man Utd: Match preview
Despite taking an early lead against Fulham last weekend, Keith Andrews’ side conceded three times to lose 3-1 at Craven Cottage.
Mikkel Damsgaard had opened the scoring for the Bees, and despite a bright start, Brentford were condemned to a third Premier League defeat of the season.
“We took the lead, and then the manner of their two goals, and the timing of them, was really disappointing,” said Andrews after defeat at Fulham. “We need to learn from this as a group. It’s a young squad and we need to analyse that period.”
In terms of injuries, Paris Maghoma and Gustavo Nunes will have to pass late fitness tests and Reiss Nelson played no part in west London last weekend.
The Red Devils were good value for their 2-1 win over Chelsea at a rain-soaked Old Trafford and will want to build on a positive result.
They will be without the suspended Casemiro, who was sent off shortly after scoring the winning goal against the Blues last weekend.
That could prompt a recall to the starting XI for Kobbie Mainoo, who has been out in the cold so far this season.
Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot are closing in on returning to the first team after injuries, whilst Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount both featured from the bench against Enzo Maresca’s side.
Brentford vs Man Utd: Expected line-ups
FourFourTwo’s prediction
Brentford 0-1 Manchester United
The Bees haven’t been able to get a rhythm going early on this season, and we can see Amorim’s side making it two wins from two in the capital this weekend, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring the winner against his former employers.

Reaction to Manchester United’s 4-0 hammering at Brentford on 13 August 2022 was predictably fierce.
BBC pundit Chris Sutton talked of United hitting “rock bottom”. On Sky Sports, Karen Carney said United “can’t get any lower”. Former skipper Gary Neville said his old club was “rotten”.
Sutton and Carney were wrong.
From that mauling at the Gtech Community Stadium to the end of last season, United spent over half a billion pounds on new players. They ended the 2024-25 campaign in 15th spot, their worst finish since relegation in 1973-74.
There have been good days in the intervening years. United won the EFL Cup, FA Cup and qualified for the Champions League. But there has been embarrassment, too.
They conceded six in losing at Manchester City in 2022 and suffered a record 7-0 hiding at Liverpool in March 2023.
They were beaten 4-0 at Crystal Palace in May 2024 and it took late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo to give the scoreline a respectable look when they were beaten 4-3 on their last visit to Brentford in May.
This summer, United spent another £219.6m on four more players. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens had not arrived by that point but Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo – who was one of Brentford’s scorers in 2022 – and Benjamin Sesko were all involved when their club was beaten at League Two Grimsby in the EFL Cup in August.
It was the first time United had ever lost to a fourth-tier side.
Far from hitting rock bottom when they were beaten at Brentford three years ago, it was just another heavy thud on a long descent from their glory days under Sir Alex Ferguson.
This weekend, United go back to west London trying to take baby steps on the path back to something like what they once were.
Victory would represent the first time they have won successive league games under Ruben Amorim, and the first time they have done it at all since they followed up a 2-0 success at Brighton on the final day of the 2023-24 campaign by opening last season with a late 1-0 win over Fulham.
It is a staggering statistic, both for United and Amorim, who took former club Sporting on a 12-match winning streak in the autumn of 2021 and had emerged victorious in 16 out of 17 games – with one draw – immediately before moving to England.
Little wonder he is not looking too far ahead.
“It’s really hard but I also understand it’s a different club, with different pressures in a completely different league,” he said.
“That feeling of winning and for it to be really normal to win, I struggle [with] a lot.
“It’s in our hands to change things. We just need to win the next one and to do everything to win the next one [after that].”
