The Boxing Day footballing feast that is usually served up for Premier League fans across the country is set to be cancelled for 2025.
No-one has been placed on the naughty list and been delivered coal, but due to Boxing Day falling on a Friday and scheduling conflicts it means that the traditional full-slate of fixtures will not occur this year.
For some, that may come as good news with their favourite football team unable to dampen their holiday spirits, but many will be left disappointed. FourFourTwoexplains all…

Boxing Day has not fallen on a Friday since 2014. That season all 10 fixtures were played on the same day, with Chelsea beating West Ham, Liverpool winning away to Burnley and Manchester United beating Newcastle.
In 2024, eight games took place on Boxing day, in 2023 seven and in 2022 it was the return of the Premier League following the enforced break for the World Cup.
However, the tradition is set to break this season, with potentially just one fixture being played.
The Premier League is committed to providing broadcasters 33 weekends of fixtures, which leads them to a scheduling dilemma should they wish to provide usual festive entertainment showpiece.

The expanded Champions League, and the league’s commitment to providing a platform for the FA Cup means that one of the 33 weekends would have to be the 27/28 December.
With the Champions League expanding there are less free mid-weeks, and as part of the deal to drop FA Cup replays, the Premier League agreed that the FA Cup would have exclusivity for the fourth, fifth and quarter-final rounds, ensuring that no Premier League fixtures would be played on those weekends. The fifth round also moved back to a weekend after being played mid-week for several seasons.
The current TV slots mean that every fixture played outside of the 3pm blackout can be televised, but there is only one slot currently designated for a Friday (8pm).

FourFourTwo understands this is a change just for 2025 and it will be reversed in 2026. The obligations that come with the new Champions League format and the platforming of the FA Cup are set for several years so issues may persist.
The Premier League had committed to confirming its TV schedule for December and January by October 15, but the latest set of TV fixtures only ran to December 22.
The EFL still has a full set of Boxing Day fixtures , as well as on Monday, December 29. The Premier League will host a set of midweek fixtures starting on Tuesday, December 30.

It was long reported that TKO was looking to launch a boxing league with help from the Saudi Public Investment Fund. Well, Paramount and TKO Group Holdings, Inc, announced today a long-term media rights agreement that will make Paramount+ the exclusive home of Zuffa Boxing across the U.S., Canada, and Latin America.Â
Zuffa Boxing, the new professional boxing promotion launched by TKO and entertainment giant Sela, is led by a powerhouse team including UFC President and CEO Dana White, Saudi Boxing Federation President HE Turki Alalshikh, Sela CEO Dr. Rakan Alharthy, and WWE President Nick Khan.
Beginning in January 2026, Paramount+ will stream Zuffa Boxing events, starting with 12 live cards in its inaugural year and plans to expand in the future. Select events may also air on CBS and other Paramount platforms, bringing high-profile boxing to a wider audience.
Dana White has long talked about his desire to “fix” boxing by creating a structure that is more like the UFC, where the best fight the best, and there is one undisputed champion per weight class. Many in the boxing community have pushed back, stating that the sport is just fine while criticizing White’s stance on fighter pay and his attempt to amend the Ali Act, which protects boxers from exploitation.Â
White expressed his excitement about the partnership in the Paramount press release.
“I’m excited to bring great boxing events to a global audience. There are millions of boxing fans that will now be able to watch competitive fights with up-and-coming boxers as well as the biggest stars in the sport. Paramount will be the home for UFC and boxing fans to watch the greatest fights in combat sports.”
Further details, including fight schedules and the first event to stream on Paramount+, will be announced in the coming months.
TKO recently hit a new, all-time high following Zuffa Boxing’s promotional debut with the Canelo-Crawford fight.Â

Gable Steveson, a highly decorated freestyle and collegiate wrestler who recently won his MMA debut, will now give dirty boxing a shot on Oct. 30, when he takes on Billy Swanson in Nashville.
Steveson will fight on Dirty Boxing Championship’s card as part of their fourth event (DBX4).
Steveson, 25, dominated college wrestling in the 285-pound division while at the University of Minnesota. He was a five-time All-American, four-time Big Ten champion (2021, 2022), two-time national champion and two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner.
He also found great success internationally in freestyle wrestling, earning an Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021 in the 125-kilogram division.
Steveson tried his hand at professional wrestling, signing a contract with WWE and eventually joining the WWE Performance Center to train beginning in 2022.
He did wrestle in one televised match against Baron Corbin at NXT Great American Bash in 2023. WWE ultimately released Steveson in May 2024.
Steveson then tried to latch on in the NFL and even signed a contract with the Buffalo Bills as a defensive tackle in 2024. He went to training camp and got some preseason action, but the team released him before the regular season began.
Steveson had NCAA eligibility left and wrestled this past year at Minnesota. He dominated again and won his Big Ten title. Steveson made the national championship but lost to Wyatt Hendrickson of Oklahoma State in the national championship match.
On Sept. 13, Steveson made his MMA debut at Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) 217 in Minnesota. He excelled with a technical knockout over Braden Peterson 1:38 into the match.
Now Steveson turns to dirty boxing in a fight against Swanson, a 31-year-old professional MMA fighter with a 4-3 lifetime record. He also made his bare knuckle boxing debut in August, falling to Bear Hill.

Two of the greatest boxers of all time will clash in an exhibition bout this coming spring when Mike Tyson meets Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Tyson already has a big name rooting him on.
Speaking this week to TMZ Sports, Jake Paul threw his support behind Tyson, while also taking some shots at Mayweather:
“I think Mike’s gonna bring all the bravado and marketing and promotion. Floyd when he’s recently fought hasn’t been able to sell out whole stadiums, etc. I hope it does well for the both of them. I hope they both can make a bunch of money. I hope that Mike can go in there and put some hands on Floyd, I’m rooting for him.”
Paul, who is a social media star turned boxer, had the biggest fight of his career back in November when he and Tyson faced off at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The fight, which streamed live on Netflix, saw Paul win by unanimous decision against the much older and rustier Tyson.
While Tyson is one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, he was 58 years old at the time of the fight, and he hadn’t competed in an officially sanctioned boxing match since 2005.
Paul, who turned 28 in January, improved his career record to 11-1 with the victory over Tyson, and he has since moved to 12-1 after beating Julio César Chávez Jr. in June.
Although Paul has often been criticized for his quality of opponent based on their age or lack of boxing experience in some cases, he will face one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world when he takes on Gervonta Davis on Nov. 14 in Miami.
However, since Paul has a huge height and weight advantage, it will be an exhibition rather than an officially scored fight.
As for Tyson and Mayweather, their bout will also be an exhibition, which is all Mayweather has competed in since retiring after beating Conor McGregor in 2017 to bring his career record to 50-0.
The fight against Tyson will mark Mayweather’s ninth exhibition bout since 2018, and it will be his biggest one yet, supplanting the fight he had against Jake Paul’s brother, WWE Superstar Logan Paul, back in 2021.
As for Tyson, it will be his third fight since 2020, as he met Roy Jones Jr. in a 2020 exhibition before returning to professional action against Jake Paul.
As a heavyweight, Tyson will have a significant size advantage over Mayweather, who fought as a welterweight during the latter stages of his career.
However, the 48-year-old Mayweather is more than a decade younger and undoubtedly much quicker than Tyson at this juncture of their lives.
Tyson could potentially be a problem for Mayweather if he is able to land some flush punches, but it is fair to question if Tyson will be able to catch up to one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time.
