Hi everyone, Dominic here.

Right with a number of WSL games kicking off at midday, letâ€s run you through the team news …

Share

The Scottish Premiership is six games in and the leaders hail from outside Glasgow. Derek McInnes†Hearts are two points clear at the top after Saturdayâ€s 3-0 win over Falkirk, coupled with Celticâ€s home stalemate against Hibernian.

Although Hearts minority investor Tony Bloom has backed the club to challenge Scotlandâ€s duopoly, McInnes is taking a more measured view. “I want us to try and stay up at the top end of the table for as long as we can,†the Hearts manager said. Nobody else, I donâ€t think, genuinely believes we can mount a challenge.â€

Rangers, meanwhile, are winless and 11th in the table with Russell Martin clinging to his job. He takes his side to Livingston today (3pm BST), where only a win will do.

Share

And with that, my watch is over.Dominic Booth will be here shortly to coax you through our early tranche of WSL matches – Liverpool v Man United is the standout, but thereâ€s loads to get us going – but Iâ€m off to get into the right frame of mind for Villa v Fulham. So until then, peace out.

Share

Not a from a dead ball, but this might be my favourite-ever cross. Beckham barely touches the ball, and yet…

Share

Relatedly, I love the way Declan Rice has improved his crossing in recent years. Of course it requires natural ability to do what he does, but also, itâ€s a skill that is very easily practised, and Iâ€m not sure why so many excellent players are so poor at it.

Share

Iâ€m sure, though, that weâ€ll see some variations on it this afternoon, when Newcastle visit Arsenal. Both sides have plenty of big men and players able to find them with dead-ball delivery; reffing that wonâ€t be easy, at all. Iâ€d not be surprised if we see a penalty given for holding or similar.

Share

I would, though, also like to see the near-post corner return. When hit flat and flicked on, itâ€s almost impossible to defend, but sadly Iâ€m currently struggling to find a Limpar-Bould combination to illustrate the point.

Share

Amorimâ€s United have become an extremely direct outfit – and itâ€s not just them. Weâ€re seeing a return to big men up front, long balls, good corners and long throws which, to me at least, makes perfect sense – actually, Iâ€m not sure why these things ever left, because they never stopped working.

Share

Ah, I neglected to post Barney Ronayâ€s United piece from yesterday. If Iâ€m guessing, Iâ€m guessing it wonâ€t be long.

Share

The last time Hearts and Celtic contested the title:

Share

The last time the Scottish league was won by a non-Old Firm side was in 1984-85 when Alex Ferguson was managing Aberdeen; the last time Hearts won it was 1959-60. They currently lead Celtic by two points, and maybe, just maybe, they can bring it home again.

Share

In Villaâ€s defence, theyâ€ve been without Andre Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans and Ross Barkley, all of whom should be back soon; if things are still poor in a few weeks, thereâ€ll be pressure, but for now, we can assume they wonâ€t be.

Share

Our first match today is Aston Villa v Fulham. How do we feel about that one? Have the home side turned the corner, or are we ignoring a dicey home win against the 11th-best side in Italy. Theyâ€ve still got plenty of good players, of course, but with Ollie Watkins out of form, theyâ€re struggling to threaten never mind score.

Share

What I would say on McT is that how well heâ€s doing in Italy doesnâ€t mean United were wrong to sell him.InSerie A, his physicality is a bigger advantage than in the Prem, and at Napoli heâ€s not competing for a starting slot with Bruno Fernandes, who plays in the same position, The move suited both parties.

Share

But the undoubted game of the day comes in Italy, where Scott McTominay faces Milan.

Obviously thatâ€s a hilarious joke, but what a move it was for him to join Napoli. Thereâ€s the football, of course – and in Antonio Conte, he has the perfect manager to platform his strengths and hide his weaknesses – but also culturally. By all accounts heâ€s absolutely loving his new life, and there might not be a better place on the planet to be revered. I couldnâ€t be happier for a very nice boy.

Share

In the meantime, though, Barcelona can make hay.Theyâ€re the best attacking side in the world by a mile – I donâ€t think anyone can argue with that, though this is football weâ€re talking about so you can never be sure – and thatâ€s enough to win almost every week. If they see off Soceidad later today, they go above Madrid at the top of the table.

Share

Julian Alvarez, man, what a player – and what a perfect fit for Atletico. On the other hand, I wonder how long itâ€ll take Xabi Alonso to get Real where they want to be. I wouldnâ€t necessarily call him a systems manager, but he is a proper coach, who needs buy-in and time to inculcate his ideas and principles – not easy when youâ€ve a squad full of superstars and a famously impatient boardroom.

I mentioned earlier that weâ€ve some European fun this afternoon, but before we properly look forward to that, letâ€s look back at last night.

Share

On which point, what a start Sunderland have made to the season – I think they call that a segue. They spent a load of wedge, granted, but turning that into points isnâ€t easy, though they were handed a friendly start, and if they could win their next two games – Man United away, Wolves at home – theyâ€ll be a long way towards staying up.

Share

On which point:

Share

A brace of own goals, goodness me.

ShareShare

On which point, who on earth is going down?I fear for Burnley, but you can make a decent case for every other team will stay up – including the current bottom three, Wolves, Villa and West Ham.

Share

We should, though, note that Brentford played really well. A Sunderland-supporting mate of mine told me that Keith Andrews†side are the best his lot have met this season, and they looked very well organised and prepared yesterday. I thought theyâ€d struggle this season and maybe they still will, but so far, theyâ€re in decent shape.

Share

On Sunday Supplement, theyâ€re talking about Man Unitedâ€s midfield. It really is mind-boggling they didnâ€t buy anyone for that position in the summer – and that was obvious at the time.

Share

We will, of course, be bringing you updates on all the WSL action and all the goals as they go in, in this very blog.

Share

Also today, weâ€ve Barcelona v Sociedad and Milan v Napoli; that second match, third v first, should be an absolute belter.

Share

Weâ€ve got some right tasty fixtures in the WSL this afternoon.Manchester City take on London City; Spurs travel to Leicester; Brighton meet Everton; and Liverpool face Manchester United. Those are our midday kick-offs, after which weâ€ve West Ham v Chelsea. Not bad.

Share

How far can Glasnerâ€s Palace go?

I was at Selhurst a couple of seasons ago when they walloped Man United 4-0, and I was seriously impressed with Daniel Muñoz. I know heâ€s not the biggest name theyâ€ve had, but heâ€s a very, very good player.

Share

I actually think Newcastle were pretty fortunate to get a player as good as Isak so early in their PIF era – likewise Bruno Guimarães. Obviously I understand why their fans were disappointed he wanted to leave, but he was crucial in winning them a trophy and his desire to leave shouldâ€ve come as no surprise.

Hereâ€s Jonathan Wilsonâ€s Sunday column:

Share

Our matches today:

Aston Villa v Fulham

Arsenal v Newcastle

Iâ€m looking forward to these. Villa badly need points and will have taken confidence from their win over Bologna in midweek, but theyâ€ll face a different challenge in Marco Silvaâ€s side.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will have taken heart from Liverpoolâ€s defeat, but Newcastle are perhaps the most physical team in the league with one of its best midfields.

Share

Amorim was, though, right not to blame the ref for his sideâ€s abjectivity, but Iâ€ve not a clue how Nathan Collins escaped a red card for fouling Bryan Mbeumo. The rationale is that Mbeumo wasnâ€t in control of the ball, but he was looking for a one-touch finish, so had no need to be, and had he not been deliberately impeded by a defender making no effort to make a legitimate challenge, he might have scored.

Share

Another manager under pressure is Ruben Amorim. Iâ€m not sure Unitedâ€s performance yesterday was entirely his fault – the issue wasnâ€t the system nor its principles, rather a lack of composure and intensity – but ultimately that too is his responsibility.

Share

Incidentally, I absolutely loved Daniel Welbeckâ€s finish for Brightonâ€s third goal. His peak years were sadly hampered by injury, but his dotage has been brilliant. Heâ€s still got it physically, while his touch, imagination and intelligence are even better than before.

Share

Across London, meantime, aggravation: Chelsea lost again, their performance in beating PSG to win the Club World Cup a distant memory. On the one hand, a dip after that was inevitable; on the other, it was one game, and thereâ€ve been precious few others of similar standard.

Share

I was out last evening – get me –so Iâ€m only just catching up with Spurs v Wolves and, in particular, Jose Palhinhaâ€s late equaliser.

I also enjoyed this comment from @Xhong_Zina30under the above link:

As a Spurs fan Iâ€ve really enjoyed Frankâ€s tactical flexibility, seeing the team drop points in different ways beats dropping points the same way like last season.

Share

And what a celebration from Oliver Glasner. That man knows something.

Share

Imagine Crystal Palace had the resources to hang on to their best players –theyâ€re second in the table having lost Michael Oliseh and Eberechi Eze. Keep them, and youâ€re talking about a title challenge.

Share

Iâ€m glad Goals on Sunday is back on Sky.Real talk: Iâ€ve not a clue why it was binned to begin with. Someone with expertise chattingabout their unique experience, while reviewing action, whatâ€s not to like?

Preamble

Morning all and welcome to your Sunday football blog. As ever, thereâ€s a good lot of action to enjoy and weâ€ll be looking forward to it here, from now. Feel free to send in your plans; weâ€ll be bringing you Villa v Fulham and Arsenal v Newcastle, as well as reflecting on yesterdayâ€s typically ridiculous Premier league action.

Paris Saint-Germain beat Auxerre 2-0 on Saturday but saw their injury problems mount ahead of their blockbuster Champions League clash against Barcelona.

Midfielder Vitinha came off late in the first half after creating the first goal and Georgia winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was replaced at halftime with an apparent thigh-muscle injury.

Champions League winners PSG visit Barcelona on Wednesday in the second round of league phase games.

– Marquinhos adds to PSG injury woes before Barça

PSG were already without injured captain Marquinhos in central defence, as well as Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, fellow forward Désiré Doué and midfielder João Neves.

“Unfortunately I can’t say anything,” PSG head coach Luis Enrique said. “We need to wait for the medical staff to tell us tomorrow or the day after what kind of injuries they have.

“We have to stay positive because we need to be able to manage this situation,” he added of the injuries piling up.

“Paris Saint-Germain are not the only team with injuries. It is the case for every team with such an intense calendar.”

Both PSG’s goals on Saturday came from central defenders.

Illia Zabarnyi stretched to poke in Vitinha’s cross from the left in the 33rd minute. It was the Ukraine defender’s first goal since joining in the offseason from Premier League team Bournemouth.

Vitinha went off two minutes later.

Lucas Beraldo headed in Senny Mayulu‘s cross to make it 2-0 in the 55th.

The win moved PSG onto 15 points from six games, with Marseille, Monaco, Lyon and Strasbourg all on 12 points and separated by goal difference.

Lyon can move level on points with PSG if they win at Lille on Sunday.

Barcelona have been dealt another setback on the injury front with confirmation that Raphinha and Joan García are both set for spells on the sidelines.

Raphinha will be out of action for three weeks with a hamstring injury, while goalkeeper García will miss up to six weeks due to a meniscus problem in his knee.

The news comes after Gavi was ruled out for five months earlier this week at the same time as Fermín López picked up a muscle problem which will prevent him from playing for three weeks.

All four players will be out of action until at least after the international break, meaning they will miss Sunday’s game against Real Sociedad, the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain next Wednesday and the trip to Sevilla on Oct. 5.

On a more positive note, both Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde trained on Friday and could return from their respective injuries against Real Sociedad this weekend.

Raphinha picked up the injury in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Real Oviedo when he had to be taken off in the second half.

The forward will miss Barça’s next three games and Brazil’s friendlies against South Korea and Japan next month, with the LaLiga fixture against Girona on Oct. 18 — a week before the Clásicoagainst Real Madrid — an early target for his comeback.

In his absence, Marcus Rashford, signed on loan from Manchester United in the summer, will get an extended opportunity to cement his place on the left side of Barça’s attack.

García, meanwhile, is unlikely to be back in time for the Clásico, with Wojciech Szczesny primed to take his place in the meantime.

“García has suffered a ruptured medial meniscus in his left knee,” Barça said Friday. “On Saturday, he will undergo an arthroscopic procedure at the hands of Dr. Joan Carles Monllau.

“He is expected to be out for around four to six weeks depending on his recovery.”

Midfielder López, like Raphinha, could also return after the October international break in time for the trip to Madrid on Oct. 26, but Gavi, in addition to goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, is a long-term absentee.

Robert Lewandowski said Barcelona will be fresher when the big games come around this season after coming off the bench to spur his side on to a 3-1 win against Real Oviedo in LaLiga on Thursday.

Oviedo led 1-0 at the break but Barça flexed their muscles in the second half, bringing on Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong to highlight the depth coach Hansi Flick has at his disposal.

Lewandowski, 37, scored Barça’s second goal as they kept within two points of leaders Real Madrid. It was the Poland striker’s LaLiga-leading third goal off the bench this season and he says he’s happy to play fewer minutes if it keeps him in better shape throughout the campaign.

– De la Fuente: No interest in Flick’s Yamal gripes
– Mark your calendars: First Clasico date revealed
– Barcelona’s Gavi (knee) out for up to 5 months

“We have so many games and the season is very long,” he told ESPN. “At the end of preseason I got injured, I was out for three weeks, but later I still felt that I couldn’t do everything 100%.

“Now I feel good physically. You have to be patient sometimes. Of course, for strikers it’s always better to play, but we have to be patient and think there are more games coming, more important games coming.

“We know that last season there were parts where we didn’t play well. I don’t want to say we were tired, but not so fresh. So we have to know being more fresh for the future means we have more opportunities to be a better team.”

Oviedo took a surprise first-half lead at the Carlos Tartiere when Alberto Reina lobbed into an empty net from 40 yards after a mistake from Barça goalkeeper Joan García.

Eric García drew Barça level from close range in the 56th minute and Lewandowski, coming off the bench for the fourth time this season, completed the turnaround with a stunning header from a De Jong cross in the 70th minute.

“I didn’t yet see the goal because when you’re on the pitch, you’re focused on your job,” Lewandowski added.

“I saw the corner or left side of post, I don’t want to say empty, but if I put the ball there I thought it’s possible. The cross is amazing and I know the space is there.

“It was a very important goal. I knew if I came on I had to do something, try and score the goal.”

Flick, who celebrated his 50th win in 67 games as Barcelona coach, praised the quality of Lewandowski’s contribution.

“It was important, this is what we know from Robert,” the Barça coach said in a news conference. “He’s one of the best in the world in the box. We’re happy we have him.

“I always say to the team, we start with 11 and finish with maybe five different players. The most important thing is everyone gives 100% for the team.

“When Robert comes on, you can feel he wants to change the result. Not only about the goal, but the dynamic it gave us in the match. It was great to see this.”

Flick also downplayed García’s error giving the ball away before the Oviedo goal — “it happens, it’s the style and how we want him to play” — and praised defender Ronald Araújo, who added Barça’s third goal late on, for his start to the season.

“Ronald is an important player for us and I am happy he scored a goal,” he said. “For him, maybe it’s a good step, for the belief in himself. This is for him the most important thing.

“I think he showed also this season that he is doing much better than last season. It’s normal. At the moment, everyone has the confidence and gives us a lot of options.”

Robert Lewandowski came off the bench to score a towering header as Barcelona fought back to beat newly-promoted Real Oviedo 3-1 at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium.

Marcus Rashford returned to Barcelona’s starting lineup, having being benched by coach Hansi Flick against Getafe on Sunday after ESPN reported he was two minutes late for a team meeting

Alberto Reina had given the hosts a shock lead with a superb long-range strike to punish a wayward clearance from Barça keeper Joan García midway through the first half.

Barça, though, were back on level terms early in the second half when Eric García bundled the ball in at the far post before Lewandowski — who had just been sent on — completed the turnaround with 20 minutes left.

Ronald Araújo headed in a late third from a corner as Flick’s side moved back two points behind leaders Real Madrid.

The champions were again without Lamine Yamal, the Spain forward continuing his recovery from a groin problem, while midfielder Gavi is set for an extended spell on the sidelines following knee surgery.

After soaking up an early spell of pressure from the hosts, England forward Rashford saw his volley at the far post parried away by Aarón Escandell.

Ronald Araújo paid tribute to injured teammate Gavi after his goal against Real Oviedo.Ronald Araújo paid tribute to injured teammate Gavi after his goal against Real Oviedo.

Rashford tested Escandell again in the 23rd minute with a curling effort when cutting inside from the left side of the penalty area, which was acrobatically pushed behind by the Oviedo keeper.

Ferran Torres’ snapshot was blocked at point-blank range by Eric Bailly before Raphinha sent a long-range strike against the base of the post.

Oviedo — who had lost four of their opening five league matches this season, scoring just one goal — took a shock lead in the 33rd minute.

García came rushing out of the Barcelona area to deal with a long ball up field, but then knocked a stray pass back towards the centre circle — from where Reina stepped forward to send a first-time, looping effort over the backtracking defenders and into an empty net.

Barça eventually got themselves back on level terms in the 56th minute when Ronald Araujo sent a ball across from the left, which Torres turned goalwards and Escandell deflected onto the post – but García reacted first to knock it over the line.

Reina then hit another long-range effort straight at Garcia, who collected the dipping ball at the second attempt.

Lewandowski replaced Raphinha to freshen up the Barça frontline in the 65th minute.

The veteran Poland forward made an instant impact as he crashed in a towering header off the underside crossbar from after Frenkie de Jong’s floated ball out on the right.

Barcelona — who host Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League next week — made the game safe when Araujo headed in from Rashford’s corner with three minutes left before Garcia redeemed himself with a smart save at the near post to deny Lucas Ahijado.

– Barcelona want to make Marcus Rashford‘s loan permanent for a lower fee of £26 million, while Manchester United value the forward at a figure closer to £35 million, reports the Daily Star. The report says that the 27-year-old could find himself at the centre of a transfer standoff as Barcelona try to get the best deal possible, taking advantage of United’s eagerness to get the striker off their books permanently. There is an option to make the deal permanent but Barca want to lower the price, while Rashford is determined to stay with the Blaugrana. Rashford scored twice in last week’s 2-1 win at Newcastle United in the Champions League.

– There will be another attempt from the Saudi Pro League to sign Man United midfielder Bruno Fernandes in the summer of 2026, Fabrizio Romano has stated on the Here We Go Podcast.
