CHICAGO — First-year Anaheim Ducks coach Joel Quenneville returned to the United Center on Sunday night for the first time since he and two other former Chicago Blackhawks executives were banned from the NHL in October 2021 for their mishandling of a sexual assault allegation by a former player in 2010.
Quenneville, 67, has the Ducks off to a 2-2-1 start almost four years after he was forced to resign as coach of the Florida Panthers. He was banned from the NHL for nearly three years.
“I’m grateful to be back in the game,” Quenneville said before Chicago’s 2-1 win on Ryan Donato’s overtime goal. “I’m excited about being back in here in Chicago.”
It has been a long road for Quenneville, the second-winningest coach in NHL history. His 971 career victories entering Sunday trail only Scotty Bowman’s 1,244.

An independent investigation commissioned by the Blackhawks led to Quenneville stepping down from the Panthers in October 2021. The investigation concluded the team mishandled allegations raised by 2008 first-round draft pick Kyle Beach against video coach Brad Aldrich during the team’s first Stanley Cup run.
Former Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman and assistant GM Al MacIsaac also resigned and were prohibited from working in the NHL.
They were reinstated by the league in July 2024. Bowman became the Edmonton Oilers’ general manager three weeks later. The Ducks signed Quenneville in May to replace Greg Cronin.
Quenneville has spent parts of 25 NHL seasons behind the benches of St. Louis, Colorado, Chicago and Florida. He guided the Blackhawks for more than 10 years and led them to championships in 2010, 2013 and 2015.
The Blackhawks fired Quenneville in November 2018 after a 6-6-3 start. He joined the Panthers for the 2019-20 season.
Quenneville returned to the United Center for the first time with Florida in January 2020 and received a video tribute from the Blackhawks and a roaring ovation from fans. He was behind the Panthers’ bench in the arena four times during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, but no fans were present.
Quenneville seemed a little uncertain about how he might be received by United Center fans this time.
“The memories we had were all very positive here,” he said. “I’m just happy to be back in that building and hear the crowd being excited, and the crowds look like they’ve been good so far this year.”
When asked if he expected acknowledgment from fans, Quenneville responded with his signature, “We’ll see.”
The reaction turned out to be muted and mixed.
Public address announcer Gene Honda called Quenneville’s name in a routine introduction as the visiting team coach about 10 minutes before the opening faceoff. A handful of fans cheered and about the same number booed, with only about half of the United Center’s 19,717 seats occupied.
The Ducks conducted background checks and spoke with Beach before hiring Quenneville, who said he has accepted responsibility for his role in failing to properly address the allegations and has engaged in educational activities to deepen his understanding of sexual assault scenarios.
“Right from the day that we joined the Ducks, it’s been a lot of positivity,” Quenneville said. “Just getting around people that are in the game, being around the organization, having a young team, kind of reminds me of the team when we were here.”
With Anaheim, Quenneville took over a team with the NHL’s third-longest active playoff drought. The Ducks finished sixth in the Pacific Division last season at 35-37-10 after being in the bottom two for the previous four years.

The government has said it is “doing everything in our power” to overturn a ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans attending a football match in Birmingham and is exploring what additional resources could be required.
On Thursday, Aston Villa said the city’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) decided that fans of the Israeli club should not be permitted to attend the Europa League fixture on 6 November over safety concerns.
Facing mounting pressure to resolve the situation, the government said it was working with police and exploring what additional resources are required.
A meeting of the SAG to discuss the match is expected next week, the Home Office said.
“No one should be stopped from watching a football game simply because of who they are,” a government spokesperson said.
They added the government was working with police and other bodies to ensure the game could “safely go ahead with all fans present”.
After it was announced on Thursday, Sir Keir Starmer called the move to block fans attending “wrong”, adding “we will not tolerate antisemitism on our streets”. There has also been criticism from other party leaders.
The SAG, which advises the council on whether to issue safety certificates, will review the decision if West Midlands Police changes its risk assessment for the match, Birmingham City Council said.
On Thursday, West Midlands Police said it had classified the fixture as “high risk” based on current intelligence and previous incidents, including “violent clashes and hate crime offences” between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv fans before a match in Amsterdam in November 2024.
More than 60 people were arrested over the violence, which city officials described as a “toxic combination of antisemitism, hooliganism, and anger” over the war in Gaza, Israel and elsewhere in the Middle East.
The Home Office was briefed that restrictions on visiting fans might be imposed last week, but the BBC understands officials were not informed about the final decision until Thursday.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said the revelation left the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, with “serious questions to answer” about why her department did “nothing” to avert the ban.
She said: “This is a weak government that fails to act when required.”
A source close to Mahmood told the BBC that “this is categorically untrue”.
“The first time the home secretary knew that the fans were being banned was last night,” they added.

The decision has also been criticised by the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK, as well as Israeli government officials.
But the Green Party backed the decision, saying it was “irresponsible” for Starmer to question a local authority’s safety decision.
Ayoub Khan, an independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr who campaigned on a pro-Gaza platform in last year’s general election, said the decision to ban fans was a “moral question” and not just about public safety.
Speaking on BBC’s Politics Midlands, Khan said the rules applied to “Russian football teams which have been banned from European competitions because of their atrocities in Ukraine” should also “apply with Israeli football teams”.
Khan, who has also raised concerns about safety and public order, said that even if additional resources were provided to West Midlands Police, the fans should not be allowed to attend, citing last year’s violence in Amsterdam.
Emily Damari, a British-Israeli citizen who was held hostage in Gaza and released in January, said she was “shocked to my core with this outrageous decision”.
Ms Damari, who described herself as a “die-hard fan of Maccabi Tel Aviv”, said: “Football is a way of bringing people together irrespective of their faith, colour or religion and this disgusting decision does the exact opposite.”
Several sporting events have seen protests over the war in Gaza, including in recent World Cup qualifiers.
Earlier this month, 22 people were arrested near the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo when Israel’s national team played Norway. Reports said tear gas was used after several demonstrators broke through police barriers.
A few days later, Israel’s national team played its next qualifier against Italy in the northern city of Udine, where around 5,000 protesters took part in a march ahead of the game. Clashes with police broke out, with a number of people arrested.
In Spain on Wednesday, a protest over Euroleague’s basketball game between Valencia and Hapoel Tel Aviv saw several people arrested.
Fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv will not be allowed to attend the Europa League match at Aston Villa on 6 November owing to safety concerns.
West Midlands police said it had classified the fixture as “high risk†based on “current intelligence and previous incidents, Âincluding Âviolent clashes and hate crime offences that occurred during the 2024 Uefa Europa League match between Ajax and ÂMaccabi Tel Aviv in Amsterdamâ€.
The police said it believed the measure would “help mitigate risks to public safety†and that it remained “steadfast in our support of all affected communities, and reaffirm our zero-tolerance stance on hate crime in all its formsâ€.
The move was condemned by the prime minister, Keir Starmer, who said: “This is the wrong decision. We will not tolerate antisemitism on our streets.
“The role of the police is to ensure all football fans can enjoy the game, without fear of violence or intimidation.â€
The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, said the decision was a “national disgrace†and urged Starmer to reverse it.

Villa said the local safety advisory group had instructed the club that “no away fans will be permittedâ€.
“The club are in continuous Âdialogue with Maccabi Tel Aviv and the local authorities throughout this ongoing process, with the safety of supporters attending the match and the safety of local residents at the forefront of any decision,†Villa said.
There was significant unrest when Maccabi played Ajax on 7 ÂNovember. A report by Dutch police into the Âdisorder, which lasted two days, found that Maccabi fans had torn a Palestinian flag down from the facade of a local building and burned it, shouted “Fuck you, Palestine†and vandalised a taxi, among a series of incidents before the fixture. After the match, what were described by Amsterdamâ€s mayor as a series of “hit-and-run†assaults on Maccabi fans, led to five people being taken to hospital and a further 20 to 30 being slightly injured. Sixty-two people were arrested, mainly for Âpublic order offences.
The Israeli foreign minister, Gideon Saâ€ar, posted on X: “Shameful decision! I call on the UK Âauthorities to reverse this coward decision!†The Palestine Solidarity Campaign said the match should be cancelled, writing on X: “Israeli football teams shouldnâ€t play in international tournaments whilst it commits genocide and apartheid.â€
The Independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, Ayoub Khan, said: “I welcome the Safety Advisory Groupâ€s decision. With so much hostility and Âuncertainty around the match, it was only right to take drastic measures.â€
Ajax were prevented last month from having fans at a Champions League match in Marseille after the French interior ministry banned “anyone claiming to be an Ajax Amsterdam supporter†from Âtravelling between the French border and the southern city. Ajax said they had been informed the decision had been taken “on grounds of public safety and securityâ€.
The same week, the prefecture of Naples prevented the selling of tickets to Eintracht Frankfurt fans hoping to travel to their Champions League match against Napoli.
Uefa said: “In all cases, the competent local authorities remain responsible for decisions related to the safety and security of matches taking place on their territory, such decisions being determined on the basis of thorough risk assessments, which vary from match to match and take into consideration previous circumstances.â€

LONDON — A professional tennis player who said a kiss caused a positive methamphetamine drug test was suspended for four years by the International Tennis Integrity Agency on Friday.
Goncalo Oliveira, who represents Venezuela, was provisionally suspended in January following a positive test in November 2024 while competing at the ATP Challenger event in Manzanillo, Mexico. Both his A and B samples contained the banned substance.
Editor’s Picks
The Portuguese-born player denied taking the drug and made his argument at a hearing with an independent tribunal, which decided Oliveira couldn’t prove the drug’s presence was unintentional.
Oliveira receives credit for time served from his provisional suspension, meaning he will be eligible to compete professionally again on Jan. 16, 2029.
Oliveira reached a career-high world doubles ranking of 77th in August 2020.
This is not the first time an athlete has said a positive drug test happened because of kissing.
French Olympic fencer Ysaora Thibus was cleared in July by the Court of Arbitration of a doping allegation after judges accepted she was contaminated with the anabolic substance Ostarine in 2024 by kissing her American partner over a period of nine days. She was later cleared by an International Fencing Federation tribunal weeks before the Paris Olympics, which let her compete there.
In 2009, Richard Gasquet escaped a lengthy doping ban when the International Tennis Federation’s tribunal panel ruled that he inadvertently took cocaine by kissing a woman in a nightclub.
AFG Vs BAN Match Prediction: The second T20I of this Afghanistan vs Bangladesh series might end up being the series decider, while also giving a chance to the Afghans to push the result of this series to the third match.
The Afghanistan Cricket Team has not been in the best form as of yet. IN the past couple of months, they lost thrice to Pakistan in a tri-series also involving the UAE. Then, more recently, they finished third in their Asia Cup 2025 group behind Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, failing to qualify for the Super Fours. A defeat in the first match of this series now puts them on the path to their third tournament/series loss in a row.
Bangladesh, after winning the first match of this series, will be looking to win this one and seal the series. This team has been in decent form this year. While they suffered series losses to Pakistan and the UAE, they defeated Pakistan and Sri Lanka in back-to-back series this summer. Then, in the Asia Cup 2025, they finished second in their group and made it to the Super Four, where they only finished behind India and Pakistan, while finishing ahead of Sri Lanka.

AFG Vs BAN Final Sharjah Cricket Stadium Pitch Report
The Sharjah Cricket Stadium is one o the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world. This ground predominantly has batting pitches. The ball has a decent bounce and comes onto the bat nicely. However, as the innings proceed, spinners come into play and start doing well in the latter portions. Early in an inning, pacers can use the bounce off the pitch effectively, but that doesnâ€t happen much. Batting first here is the better option, seeing that the pitch does crack a bit as the match goes on. As for the boundary dimensions, the straight ropes are about 75-77m away from the batter, while the square boundaries measure about 65m in length.

Uefa has previously resisted calls to bar Israel from its competitions, with Ceferin saying in August that he is generally opposed to bans.
“I think that all athletes should have the opportunity to compete and that other things should be handled differently,” the Slovenian said.
But the organisation was heavily criticised – including by Liverpool star Mohamed Salah – in the summer when it posted about Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid on social media but did not refer to the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) had said he had been killed in an Israeli attack while waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip.
The PFA has also said that the number of footballers killed or who have died from starvation in Gaza totals 421, including 103 children.
Subsequently, Uefa placed banners on the pitch before the Super Cup match between Paris St-Germain and Tottenham in Italy in August reading ‘stop killing children’ and ‘stop killing civilians’.
The Turkish FA has now become the first Uefa member to publicly demand Israel’s suspension.
“Despite positioning themselves as defenders of civilized values and peace, the sports world and football institutions have remained silent for too long,” said Turkish FA president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu.
“It is time for Fifa and Uefa to take action. Israel must be banned from all sporting competitions immediately.”
The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.
At least 65,502 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.
Former Arsenal and current Real Betis defender Hector Bellerin has been outspoken on the Israel-Gaza conflict, and told the BBC he feels the rules have not been equally applied to Russia and Israel.
“I just don’t understand how when the war between Russia and Ukraine started, Russia couldn’t compete in any sports, and now the measurement is a different bar for what is happening with Israel,” the Spaniard said. “I don’t think that is right.
“There are kids and families that are being bombed every day. I wish that all my colleagues, all the organisations in football would step forward, because football most of the time is the place where people look.”
But others maintain that Israel should keep their place in Uefa competitions.
“For either Uefa or Fifa to remove Israel from football competitions would be a betrayal of Jewish communities all over the world, and an act of vilification, demonisation and de-legitimisation of Israel,” said Simon Johnson, ex-director of corporate affairs at the FA and former chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council.
“It would do nothing to end the war or bring peace to the region.”
Pressure seems to be building towards a formal decision which, whichever way it goes, could have seismic consequences far beyond football.

Following the completion of his 12-month-ban, Barker has been able to make two appearances for Hampshire to close out the season.
After playing for Hampshire’s second side, Barker returned to the first-team once more for County Championship contests against Sussex and Somerset.
“Not being able to be around my team-mates and train properly was hard,” Barker added
“Luckily I had my family there to support me but its then been great to get back into training recently and play some games for Hampshire.”
The all-rounder will now return to Warwickshire where he spent 10 seasons between 2009 and 2018 – taking 357 wickets and scoring six first-class centuries.
He also helped the club win the County Championship title in 2012.
During his time at Hampshire, Barker took 179 first-class wickets at an average of 24.
“If someone had said to me that I’d done better with my stats, especially at the back end of my career then I’d have taken it,” he added.
“I’m really happy with how it’s gone but I couldn’t have done that without my team-mates, without them it wouldn’t have been possible.
“Things don’t always go to plan but I’m grateful that I’ve been able to play and represent Hampshire again these last few weeks.”
Members of UEFA’s executive committee are reportedly in favour of suspending Israel from UEFA competitions, including the Europa League, according to the Associated Press.

What will happen to Aston Villa’s Europa League fixture against Maccabi Tel Aviv?
Article 29.03 of UEFA’s Europa League regulations states: “If a club is disqualified or for any reason withdraws from the competition before all its matches in the league phase have been played, the results of all its matches played until that moment remain valid.
“A calculation of points will need to take place upon completion of the league phase to take the cancelled matches into account. Any club that has not been able to play its scheduled match against a disqualified/withdrawn club is awarded the average number of points earned by all clubs in its same seeding pot against the clubs in the same pot as that disqualified/withdrawn club in home matches, if the affected club was due to play at home, or in away matches if the affected club was due to play away.
“The league phase points of all matches that have been played, including the points obtained by clubs in matches involving the disqualified/withdrawn club before their disqualification/withdrawal are not adjusted in any way, and all taken into account for the average points calculation.”
PAK Vs BAN Asia Cup Prediction: Match 17 of the Asia Cup 2025 will be a Super Four contest between two teams looking to qualify for the final.
The Pakistan Cricket Team has had a very mixed campaign in the Asia Cup 2025. They started the tournament with a win against Oman in Group A, followed by a massive defeat to India, and concluded the group stage with a win over the UAE. Having finished second in their group, the Men in Green made it to the Super Fours, where they lost their first match to India, but then beat Sri Lanka in their second game. Now, a win in this game would mean a place in the final against their arch-rivals.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh too has had a very topsy-turvy time in this competition. They started their campaign with a win over Hong Kong, followed by a defeat to Sri Lanka and a win against Afghanistan in Group B. Having finished second, they took on Sri Lanka in their first Super Fours game and won. The Bangla Tigers were then defeated by India. So now, a win in their last match of this round will take them into the final against the Men in Blue.

PAK Vs BAN Super Four Dubai International Stadium Pitch Report
The pitches at the Dubai International Stadium are batting-friendly, which means that teams are expected to score big runs here. The pitch is by far a better batting surface in the second inning, as there is still some movement and stickiness in the first inning. The bounce here is consistent, and the ball comes nicely onto the bat. Pacers can do some damage early in the inning, but batters still dominate. Towards the middle of an inning, spinners come into play. While pitch does crack a bit throughout a match, batting second is still the way to go here.

It will not be a comfortable evening in Dubai as the mercury will remain high. The temperatures will remain over the 30 degrees Celsius mark. The winds will be on the stronger side, while the humidity will be moderate. The skies will be clear with no chance of rain.
