Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner received positive news after an MRI revealed he suffered a high left ankle sprain, the team announced.

Wagner underwent the MRI on Monday after he was injured in the first quarter of the Magic’s 106-100 loss to the New York Knicks on Sunday. The injury appeared to be much worse after his left leg bent awkwardly upon a hard landing after a foul. Wagner initially grabbed his leg around his knee.

The MRI showed no structural damage to his left leg, sources told ESPN. The Magic said that Wagner’s return will depend on how he responds to treatment.

Orlando will have to play the Miami Heat in the NBA Cup quarterfinal without Wagner.

The forward has been Orlando’s best and steadiest player, averaging 23.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and improving his 3-point shooting to 35.4% before going down early at New York. He is a big reason why the Magic were able to go 7-3 without Paolo Banchero, who just returned from a groin injury last Friday.

Aaron Ekblad blocked a shot late against the Philadelphia Flyers, but the news this morning is positive.

The Florida Panthers were defeated 4-2 by the Flyers despite once owning a two-goal lead. The Panthers came out firing, throwing 15 shots on goal in the first period and concluding the opening frame up 1-0. Carter Verhaeghe added the second, but four unanswered goals by the Flyers flipped the script.

Late in the third period, while trying to keep the Flyers’ lead at a minimum, Ekblad blocked a shot that stung him. He finished the game with one shot on goal, two hits and three blocks in 21:43 of ice time.

There was some concern this morning, but coach Paul Maurice spoke to the media and provided a positive update, stating that he is fine and that he will play on Friday against the Calgary Flames.

Ekblad has had a quiet season offensively, but he continues to be a vital part of their defensive system. With just one goal and seven points in 22 games, the 29-year-old is on pace for just four goals and 26 points.

Despite that, Ekblad averages the second-most ice time on the team and plays a critical role on the Panthers’ shutdown unit with Gustav Forsling.

The news is a sigh of relief for the Panthers.

Joel Embiid appears to have avoided a major injury in his right knee.

The Philadelphia 76ers star missed the team’s 102-100 win over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night due to right knee soreness. Embiidâ€s knee was re-evaluated on Tuesday night, but no structural issues were found, according to ESPNâ€s Shams Charania.

While a specific timeline for his return is not known, he is now considered day-to-day. It doesnâ€t appear that anything happened specifically to cause the injury, either.

“He just reported a little soreness in his right knee,†76ers head coach Nick Nurse said before the game, via ESPN. “He’s had some imaging on that this afternoon, and the doctors are here tonight to go over that with him.”

Embiid played just 19 games last season due to lingering issues with his left knee, and he underwent knee surgery in April. Heâ€s played in just six games so far this season while the team takes a cautious approach with him, and every absence heâ€s had before Tuesday night was scheduled. According to ESPN, heâ€ll continue to sit out parts of back-to-back games throughout the season like heâ€s done so far already.

Embiid has averaged 19.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He was fined $50,000 by the league last month after he made a “lewd gesture†during a loss to the Celtics.

The 76ers will be back in action Friday night against the Detroit Pistons. Itâ€s unclear if Embiid will be available.

Paul George nearing return

76ers star Paul George is apparently almost ready to make his season debut.

George underwent knee surgery this past offseason and has been recovering ever since. He is in the “final stage†of recovery, Charania reported Tuesday night, and is getting closer to making his return. Doctors, though, are looking for additional strength in his left quadriceps to support his knee before fully clearing him.

George underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in July. He averaged 16.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season, his first with the franchise after spending five years with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Though itâ€s still unclear when heâ€ll be ready to actually play for Philadelphia this season, it sounds like heâ€s getting close.

Justin Edwards led the 76ers with 22 points off the bench after he shot 8-of-9 from the field in Tuesday night’s win at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Tyrese Maxey finished with 21 points and nine assists, and Andre Drummond added 14 points and 13 rebounds. The win pushed the 76ers to 7-4 on the year.

New York Yankees star Aaron Judge won’t need surgery on his elbow, but left-hander Carlos Rodon underwent an operation this week and could miss Opening Day.

Judge’s throwing was limited after he hurt the flexor tendon in his right elbow in July. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that an MRI after the team was eliminated last week showed “no surgery is going to be needed.”

“He’ll take some time off and continue to do strengthening things and rehab and stuff,” Boone said. “But it felt like he finished the season in a pretty good place, as we saw continued improvements with him.”

Judge, 33, led the majors in batting average (.331), OPS (1.144) and WAR (9.7) while finishing with 53 home runs and 114 RBIs. He hit .500 with 1 homer, 7 RBIs and 4 walks in the postseason.

Boone said he expects Judge to be New York’s every-day right fielder in 2026 and downplayed the idea that the two-time American League MVP could see some playing time at first base.

Judge hurt the elbow making a throw at Toronto on July 22. The seven-time All-Star returned Aug. 5 from a 10-day stint on the injured list and threw gingerly upon his outfield return Sept. 5. He built up arm strength and made a 90.2 mph throw from right field in the AL Division Series opener.

Rodón was operated on by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Wednesday to remove loose bodies in his left elbow and shave a bone spur. He has eight weeks of no throwing, and the start of his season could be delayed by a couple of weeks, Boone said.

Rodón, who will turn 33 in December, was 18-9 with a 3.09 ERA.

Boone also said slugger Giancarlo Stanton does not need surgery on his elbows.

“He’s in a pretty good place,” Boone said. “He’ll treat it and everything, but nothing expected for Big G.”

Gerrit Cole, returning from Tommy John surgery in March, will throw lightly off a mound next week and could be available not far after Opening Day.

New York has a record 27 World Series titles but none since 2009. After beating the Red Sox in the AL Wild Card Series, the Yankees lost a four-game ALDS to the Blue Jays.

“It’s just playing at the highest level at the most important time, and you’ve got to maintain that and do that for the entire month of October,” said Boone, the manager since the 2018 season.

After losing to the Dodgers in the 2024 World Series, New York started the season 35-20, slumped during a 25-34 stretch as its bullpen struggled, then closed 34-14 and lost the AL East to Toronto on a tiebreaker.

“Could I have been more creative in some of the things that I could have done in those games in the middle of the season where we were a little short?” Boone asked out loud.

Boone’s contract runs through 2027.

“He’s one of the better managers,” GM Brian Cashman said. “Because of our environment, he’s someone that can be second-guessed 10 million times over.

“And I don’t care who you put in that, that would be the same, whoever else would be there. I trust him. I think he’s a good man. I think he works his tail off.”

Among potential free agents, Cashman said the Yankees would like to retain Cody Bellinger.

“We’d love to have him with our team moving forward,” he said.

Bullpen coach Mike Harkey and first base/infield coach Travis Chapman won’t return for 2026. Assistant hitting coach Pat Roessler won’t be in that role, and minor league hitting coordinator Jake Hirst will be taking that job.

Cashman added that third-base coach Luis Rojas was given permission to interview for Baltimore’s manager opening and that hitting coach James Rowson was allowed to interview for Minnesota’s manager job.

ESPN’s Jorge Castillo and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
