Arjun Tendulkar and Sachin Tendulkar Arjun Tendulkar has done something rare that his father Sachin Tendulkar never accomplished during his career. Arjun, who currently represents Goa in the Indian domestic cricket, was recently traded from Mumbai Indians (MI) to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for IPL 2026. At the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the 26-year-old all-rounder has taken on a new role as an opener for Goa while continuing to bowl with the new ball.In the match against Madhya Pradesh, Arjun delivered an impressive performance, taking three wickets for 36 runs in his four-over spell and scoring 16 runs off 10 balls. His current tournament statistics show 70 runs and 8 wickets in five matches. This achievement stands in contrast to his father Sachin’s T20 career. While Sachin was a regular opener in T20s, he never opened the bowling. The cricket legend bowled only 93 balls in his 96 T20 matches, claiming two wickets.Arjun shifted his base to Goa before the 2022/23 season after making his T20 debut for Mumbai in 2020/21. He began his Ranji Trophy career impressively with a century and now plays all three formats for Goa.In his first-class career spanning 22 matches, the left-arm pacer has claimed 48 wickets and scored 620 runs, including one century and two half-centuries.His List A record shows 25 wickets in 18 matches and 102 runs in 10 innings, while in T20s, he has taken 35 wickets and scored 189 runs in 29 matches.Sachin’s T20 career included just one T20 International match, which was India’s first-ever T20I in 2006. His most notable T20 achievement came in IPL 2010, when he became the first Indian to win the Orange Cap by scoring 618 runs in that season.
Arjun Tendulkar (Photo by Pankaj Nangia/Getty Images) Arjun Tendulkar is set for a fresh start in the IPL after being traded from the Mumbai Indians to the Lucknow Super Giants, one of the more notable moves following the announcement of franchise retentions. The left-arm bowling all-rounder shifts base after two seasons with MI, opening the door to a new coaching group, a different dressing-room environment, and an opportunity to reboot his career. Arjun first entered the IPL in 2021 when Mumbai signed him for Rs 20 lakh at the mini-auction. Although he travelled with the squad to the UAE as a net bowler during IPL 2020, he did not appear in any matches that year. MI bought him again at the 2022 mega-auction, this time for Rs 30 lakh, despite competition from the Gujarat Titans who also made a bid. Expectations of a debut in 2022 did not materialise.
IPL retentions, releases and trades: The burning questions before deadline
His long-awaited debut finally arrived in 2023. Across four matches, he picked up 3 wickets while giving away 92 runs from 59 deliveries and added 13 runs with the bat. While he showed glimpses of promise, MIâ€s depth in fast bowling made it difficult for him to get consistent game time. The move to Lucknow does not alter his salary. LSG have retained his existing contract of Rs 30 lakh for IPL 2026, the same amount he has been earning since the 2022 mega-auction. This places him among the more economical all-round options in the league, especially with his ability to bowl in the powerplay and contribute at the lower order.
The headlines regarding the trade window ahead of the IPL 2026 retention deadline day have been hogged by the potential Sanju Samson-Ravindra Jadeja+Sam Curran trade. However, without much noise, the Mumbai Indians (MI) seem to have made a small but crucial move in this trade window.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are involved in discussions regarding pace-bowling all-rounders Shardul Thakur and Arjun Tendulkar. However, it is learned that this is not a swap player-for-player trade, but it will be two separate player-for-cash trades.
Cricbuzz stated, “Sources say both Thakur and Tendulkar are likely to change franchises, but the two moves may be treated or interpreted as individual deals – more precisely, straightforward all-cash transfers.â€
The IPL 2025 brought different results for both teams. Mumbai, under Hardik Pandya, finished fourth in the points table, beat Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator, but lost to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2.
Lucknow, under Rishabh Pant, the most expensive signing in IPL history, flattered to deceive, ending their tournament in the seventh position with six wins and eight defeats. LSG were wrecked by injuries to multiple Indian pacers through the season.
Even before LSG played their first game of the season, they lost the services of Mohsin Khan and consequently roped in Shardul as a replacement player. Thakur had gone unsold in the IPL 2025 auction and was set to play for Essex in the County Championship in England.
He joined LSG for his auction price of INR 2 crore. The pacer left a good impression in the IPL 2025, claiming 13 wickets, the joint-second-most for LSG, with a best of 4/34.
Last month, Thakur was named as the captain of Mumbai for the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season.
Meanwhile, 26-year-old Arjun has been part of the Mumbai Indians franchise since IPL 2021 but has featured in only five games. In 5 IPL matches, Arjun has picked up three wickets and scored 13 runs.
IPL 2026 Auction: Why Are Mumbai Indians Trading Arjun Tendulkar For Shardul Thakur From LSG?
It is believed that Mumbai Indians want a backup pace-bowling all-rounder for Deepak Chahar, who is injury-prone. Hence, they want Shardul Thakur, who brings a similar skill set as Deepak—effective with the new ball and can score some crucial runs with the bat at No. 8 or 9.
Further, it has been tough for Arjun Tendulkar to break into MIâ€s playing XI all these years owing to the strength of MIâ€s bowling attack, particularly with the franchise often having several Indian pace options in their squad.
Meanwhile, due to lack of game time in Mumbaiâ€s domestic team, Arjun, the son of Sachin Tendulkar, moved from Mumbai to Goa a couple of years back and has featured regularly for Goa in domestic cricket.
What is the deadline day for IPL teams to announce retentions?
The retention deadline day for the franchises to announce their retained and released players is November 15.

Arjun, playing with white pieces, settled for a draw against Hungaryâ€s GM Peter Leko after 36 moves. Praggnanandhaa split the point against GM Daniil Dubov in 30 moves, while Harikrishna held his ground against Swedenâ€s GM Nils Grandelius in a tense 38-move encounter. Among the five Indians in the fourth round, Arjun and Praggnanandhaa were the key focus on the top boards. Arjun opted for the Nimzo-Indian Defence and appeared well-prepared in the opening phase, gaining time on the clock after 16 moves. The Indian looked for chances to press in the middlegame but eventually agreed to a draw after a balanced exchange-heavy position. Leko later praised Arjunâ€s approach but felt the game was always under control. “I am getting more and more in my preparations and I wasnâ€t really afraid (of Arjunâ€s opening line). I knew that this b5 that I played is quite solid and there cannot be any miracle in this position. But over the board when Arjun is blitzing all his moves, I know that there is always some pressure. But it was more or less equal all the time,†Leko said after the game.
Arjun, playing with white pieces, settled for a draw against Hungaryâ€s GM Peter Leko after 36 moves.
Praggnanandhaa, meanwhile, handled the black pieces against Dubov sharply, but neither side found a breakthrough. The game ended peacefully after 30 moves, taking the match into the tiebreak stage. In another key tie, Harikrishna found himself in a difficult position despite playing white against Grandelius but held firm in a bishop-and-pawn endgame to salvage a draw and force the match into a decider. Elsewhere, GM Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara became the first player to reach the round of 16 after a quick 20-move draw with GM Alexey Sarana, having won the first game on Tuesday. He now awaits the winner of the Harikrishna–Grandelius match.
