Following Andrade El Idolo’s return to AEW earlier this month, his sudden disappearance from television has been a topic of speculation. A new report suggests his absence may be due to a non-compete clause with WWE. On the October 16 edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that the belief is WWE intervened.
“What Iâ€ve been hearing was WWE sent a letter. AEW obviously believed that there was no non-compete,” Meltzer said. “There were people who talked to people in WWE who also believed there was no non-compete. But WWE apparently… thatâ€s the story. They said that he canâ€t do (anything in AEW) for 90 days.”
This information aligns with a previous report from Fightful Select, which noted that sources close to Andrade said he was in “good spirits” but did not explain his absence. The report also mentioned that the situation was not seen as “AEW or Andradeâ€s specific fault.”
The assumption was that Andrade was free of any restrictions due to the circumstances of his WWE release. However, this new development indicates WWE believes he is still within the standard 90-day non-compete window for main roster talent. Andrade’s future in AEW appears to be on a temporary hold, not because of creative decisions or injury, but due to a potential legal complication with his former employer. AEW has not commented on the matter publicly.

We now have a bit more information regarding Andrade and why he hasn’t been back on AEW TV since his return.
On the October 1 edition of Dynamite, Andrade made his return to AEW less than a month after being released from his WWE contract. He joined the Don Callis Family on the episode and started a feud with Kenny Omega. Since then, though, there has been little follow-up with fans wondering where Andrade has been.
“Regarding Andrade, all I know is that he’s not injured, and something is holding him up regarding his non-compete with WWE,” our Bryan Alvarez reports.
What specifically is holding Andrade up is not known at this time.
WWE main roster wrestlers traditionally have 90-day non-compete clauses after being released. A report from PWInsider said that Andrade’s WWE departure was due to multiple wellness policy failures, and WWE made the decision to cut him outright rather than continuing to pay him during a non-compete period.
Andrade did wrestle for The Crash in Mexico on October 3, winning the promotion’s Heavyweight Championship. He is scheduled to compete for WWC in Puerto Rico this weekend on the same day as AEW WrestleDream.
An Andrade vs. LA Park indie match was supposed to take place for Mucha Lucha Atlanta in Norcross, Georgia on October 26 but is no longer being advertised.
Andrade’s first AEW stint lasted from 2021-2023. His return has made him the first wrestler to go from WWE to AEW to WWE to AEW again.

Andrade made his big AEW return on the October 1 episode of Dynamite, but fans looking forward to seeing him at WrestleDream are going to be disappointed. His status for the pay-per-view has now been confirmed, and it rules him out completely.
World Wrestling Council announced on Instagram that Andrade will be heading to Puerto Rico on October 18 to challenge Xavant, known as the Nationâ€s Hero, for the WWC Universal Championship. The bout is set to headline WWCâ€s Halloween Wrestling Xtravaganza at the PepÃn Cestero Arena in Bayamón, a venue celebrated as the cathedral of Puerto Rican wrestling.
“Official, for the WWC Universal Championship: Direct from AEW, The Idol, Andrade, challenges the Nationâ€s Hero, Xavant. WWC presents Halloween Wrestling Xtravaganza, Saturday October 18th at 8:00pm in the cathedral of Puerto Rican wrestling, the PepÃn Cestero de Bayamón.â€
The problem is that October 18 is the same night AEW WrestleDream is taking place. With both shows running in the evening, Andrade wonâ€t be able to appear on AEWâ€s card.
While his absence from WrestleDream is a letdown for AEW fans, the WWC title match is a major spotlight for Puerto Rican wrestling. Andradeâ€s challenge against Xavant has already been billed as a marquee showdown, and a win could only boost his momentum for when he returns to AEW.
Do you think Andrade made the right call focusing on the WWC title match instead of WrestleDream? Should AEW have pushed harder to keep him on their show? Share your thoughts in the comments and let us know how you see this playing out.
The October 1, 2025 edition of AEW Dynamite featured multiple incredible moments. This included Andrade making his shocking return to the company after almost two years. However, the show still saw a decrease in viewership.
According to Dave Meltzer, the October 1st edition of AEW Dynamite saw its viewership decline. The show averaged 465,000 viewers, representing a 16.1% drop compared to the 554,000 viewers on September 24.
In the key P18–49 demographic, Dynamiteâ€s rating fell from 0.11 to 0.09, an 18.2% decrease. These figures reflect linear television audiences only and exclude any streaming data from MAX.

A new report has shed light on how Andrade El Idolo was able to make his shocking return to All Elite Wrestling on last night’s Dynamite, less than three weeks after his release from WWE. According to a report from PWInsider.com, Andrade did not have the standard 90-day non-compete clause that is typical for main roster talent departing WWE.
This allowed him to become an immediate free agent and sign with another promotion. The absence of this clause is what enabled his surprising comeback to happen so quickly. The report, citing multiple WWE sources, states that Andrade was “cut outright” from the company due to what was described as “numerous WWE Wellness violations over the last year.”
Because of the nature of the release, WWE reportedly chose not to pay him for the 90-day non-compete period, thus making him free and clear to perform elsewhere immediately. The report also suggests that this situation confirms what many have suspected for some time: that WWE is no longer publicly announcing Wellness Policy suspensions for its main roster talent.
Andrade made his return on the sixth anniversary episode of AEW Dynamite, appearing after the opening six-man tag team match. Following a victory by the team of Kenny Omega and the AEW World Tag Team Champions, Brodido, the lights in the arena went out. When they came back on, Andrade was in the ring. He attacked Kenny Omega and then shook hands with Don Callis, officially aligning himself with the Don Callis Family faction.

Former WWE NXT Champion Andrade was released from WWE earlier this month, reportedly for disciplinary reasons, ending a year-and-a-half return to the company. Management was said to be frustrated with his attitude, the fans’ lukewarm reception, and his slow progress in learning English. The former AEW has taken the release in stride and is already booked for his first appearance.
House of Glory announced that Andrade will be appearing at the company’s November 15 event, Superclash, at the Suffolk Credit Union Arena in Bretwood, NY. There is no word on Andrade’s opponent at the event. The promotion is already home to former WWE NXT Women’s Champion Indi Hartwell, who is currently the company’s Women’s Champion. The company also works with TNA talents like The Hardy Boys, who will be appearing in October.
WWE management was said to have “buyer’s remorse” over Andrade, who returned to the company after his departure from AEW. The company had hoped to capitalize on him like former AEW talents like Cody Rhodes or CM Punk, but fan reactions were not nearly at that level, outside of the reaction to his return in the 2024 Royal Rumble. WWE had hoped to include Andrade in the company’s vision of AAA, but Andrade refused out of loyalty to his former home of CMLL, AAA’s chief competitor. Andrade’s last match in WWE was at SummerSlam, where he teamed with Fenix in a losing effort against five other tag teams in a ladder match for the WWE Tag Team Championship.
