Chelsea’s dominant victory over Paris FC was lit up by the newest member of their attack, Alyssa Thompson, who traversed the Stamford Bridge pitch with agile runs and eventually got the rewards her efforts deserved.

Thompson may be just 20 years old, but her arrival at Chelsea was accompanied by lofty expectations arising from the club record price tag. Now, in her seventh appearance, she has finally got off the mark.

She darted down the wings and led her side’s counter-attacks, showing expert positioning to put herself in the right place to be able to set up Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s goal, and tapped home an excellent Keira Walsh delivery to get her first goal for the club.

It was an impressive display, but, says manager Sonia Bompastor, the best of her is still to come.

“A young player, a lot of talent, but I think we haven’t seen yet the best of her, but hopefully we will see that soon,” said Bompastor.

“She is coming from abroad, she speaks the language, which helps, but again, it’s a new environment, a new club, she needs to learn to connect with new players on the pitch, new team-mates, so hopefully, even sooner, we will see an even better version.”

Thompson’s first goal is one which will put her at “ease”, says Brighton forward Fran Kirby, who previously spent nine years at Chelsea.

Former Scotland captain Rachel Corsie added that now Thompson has scored, she imagines the “floodgates will open”.

“She’s been a real bright spark,” Kirby said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “I think against Tottenham she looked really sharp, it was probably that final product.

“Today, getting that assist and goal will make her feel a little bit more at ease going into the next game. A little bit of pressure off.”

Chelsea kickstarted their European campaign with a comfortable victory over Paris FC. Alyssa Thompson scored her first goal in west London as Sonia Bompastorâ€s side dominated proceedings. Sandy Baltimore opened the scoring from the penalty spot while Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Erin Cuthbert also got on the scoresheet.

It was a memorable night for Thompson who added the hosts†third immediately after the break. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a bright start to her Chelsea career since making a high-profile £1.1m move from Angel City this summer. She played an integral role in getting Chelsea this Champions League win at Stamford Bridge and Bompastor was delighted with her progression.

“Iâ€m glad for her because I think sheâ€s been working hard and the fact that she was able to score her first goal is really important for her confidence,†she said.

“Sheâ€s really quick and she has an engine. I think we havenâ€t seen the best of her yet but hopefully weâ€ll see that soon. Sheâ€s coming from abroad … Itâ€s a new environment. She needs to learn to connect with the players on the pitch.â€

Chelsea had endured a frustrating start to their Champions League challenge, the only trophy to elude their grasp. This will have therefore come as a welcome result after a 1-1 draw against Twente last week in Enschede and a host of wasted opportunities that were starting to cause some consternation.

“I think we were the better team,†Bompastor said. “We created a lot again. We scored really good goals from different players and we could have had more.â€

The recent lack of attacking cohesion has not been helped by Bompastorâ€s rotation. There were just two changes on this occasion with Baltimore and Sjoeke Nüsken coming in.

Paris FC had suffered an equally underwhelming start, surrendering a 2-0 lead to the newcomers OH Leuven. Sandrine Soubeyrand welcomed back the goalkeeper Mylène Chavas while Maëlle Garbino and Anaële Le Moguédec also came in.

It promised to be an intriguing contest between two managers who are very well acquainted. Bompastor and Soubeyrand played for France together for over a decade while also meeting often as managers in the Première Ligue.

Chelsea dominated proceedings from the start. The urgency to score early was clear and led to a series of snatched opportunities when patience was needed. Nüsken and Cuthbert had efforts from distance while Aggie Beever-Jones scuffed two gilt-edged opportunities.

In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Sara Pusztai struck a spectacular winner for Leuven, smashing the ball into the top corner.

Earlier, a much-changed OL Lyonnes side eased to a 3-0 home win over St Pölten. Jule Brand opened the scoring with her first goal for the club, and Ada Hegerberg headed the hosts’ second just before half-time as the Austrian visitors paid for missed chances. Teenage midfielder Lily Yohannes completed the scoring soon after the restart with a brilliant lob from close to the halfway line.

Wolfsburg grabbed a late victory at VÃ¥lerenga thanks to Janina Minge’s penalty. The midfielder converted from the spot with the last kick of the game after Naina Inauen’s foul in the area. Wolfsburg took the lead through Lineth Beerensteyn in the 57th minute, but Sara Hørte headed home just three minutes later to level for the hosts in Oslo. Guardian sport

Their pressure eventually told, however, when Nüsken went down in the box with half an hour played. The offence from Le Moguédec was not initially spotted by the referee, Michalina Diakow, but after a brief trip to the VAR monitor, she duly pointed to the spot. Baltimore stepped up to convert for the second week in a row.

Chelsea consolidated their advantage just before the break when Thompson broke forward at pace. A clever turn gave her space to stand up a cross for Rytting Kaneryd to loop a header home. The winger looked slightly bemused that it had ended up in the back of the net, celebrating with an expression that said she is not accustomed to scoring with her head.

Chelsea did not let their foot off the gas and extended their lead immediately after the break with Thompsonâ€s close-range finish. They soon had a fourth when Cuthbert touched home a Sam Kerr header on the line.

There was still time for the Cobham academy product and England youth international Lexi Potter to make her debut as Chelsea saw out a comfortable victory. It was an important three points on the board ahead of a trip to Austria to face St Pölten next month.

That it took until Sunday’s three-wicket win over India for them to complete their first ODI chase over 300, taking back their record for the highest in the women’s 50-over format, is, in truth, a compliment to the bowlers that have worn canary yellow (OK, Australia gold) over the past 50 years.

It is hard for their batters to hold a record if never given the chance.

Ultimately, the result of Australia conceding 330 was captain Alyssa Healy being given an opportunity to produce her latest masterpiece.

Then best known as the 19-year-old niece of renowned former Aussie wicketkeeper Ian, she debuted in 2010 after her nation failed to win either of the 20 or 50-over World Cups held the previous year and has seen it all through 15 trophy-laden years since.

A T20 World Cup win came three months after her bow and seven world titles have followed from 10 attempts across formats.

The gritty keeper was also there in Derby in 2017 when a semi-final defeat by India briefly halted the run of success.

That loss “drove us to rethink our standards,” Healy said this week.

At the next 50-over World Cup in New Zealand, Healy made 170 against England in the final and was named player of the tournament. She ensured her country would not fall short again.

Whether this latest epic knock topped that previous effort can be debated.

Some will argue the case for the pressure of a final. Others can counter with the challenge that comes when facing a record target and a raucous India-supporting crowd of 20,000.

What is certain is this century was far harder to see coming.

The Christchurch carnage in 2022 came as she topped the run-scoring charts, but this knock followed six innings in India since the start of last month in which she had failed to pass 30.

“If you’ve been watching me in the nets, it’s been a frustrating experience because I feel like I’ve had no rhythm whatsoever,” said Healy.

“But once you step out on the field, your competitive instincts kick in and you just lock into the contest.”

Alyssa Healy’s brilliant 142 helped Australia complete a record women’s one-day international chase as they beat India by three wickets in the World Cup.

On a featherbed pitch in Visakhapatnam, India posted a commanding 330 from 48.5 overs – the highest total Australia had ever conceded in an ODI.

The platform for India had been laid by a 155-run opening stand between Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal, who accelerated quickly once they got themselves in.

Mandhana was the chief aggressor, top scoring with 80 off 66 balls, while a string of cameos from India’s middle order continued the assault.

All-rounder Annabel Sutherland swung some of the momentum back Australia’s way in the second half of India’s innings as she finished with impressive figures of 5-40.

Lesser teams might have been daunted by the chase, but Australia captain Healy produced a stoic knock to put her side on course for victory.

Healy’s innings off 107 balls featured 21 fours and three sixes and was chanceless until she sliced Shree Charani, who claimed 3-41, to Sneh Rana, who grasped a diving catch with her fingernails at point.

With 66 required off 67 deliveries, Ash Gardner, who made 45, steered Australia close before Kim Garth and Ellyse Perry got the World Cup holders within striking distance.

Perry had retired earlier in her innings with cramp but came back to finish the job and whacked a six off Rana to get Australia over the line with six balls to spare.

Australia’s record-breaking ODI chase eclipsed the 302 made by Sri Lanka to beat South Africa at Potchefstroom in April 2024.
