Liverpool striker Alexander Isak was the story of the summer as he managed to force through a move from Newcastle United on deadline day.

With the move involving the Swede effectively going on strike ahead of the new campaign before getting his Anfield switch, he understandably has few fans left in the north east.

Those aggrieved Magpies may, therefore, take an element of pleasure in Isak’s most recent setback.

Isak is joined by Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres in a star-studded Sweden attack, but that was not enough to overcome the tiny state of Kosovo, ranked 91st in the world by FIFA, in their most recent World Cup qualifier.

Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, who has since been sacked, piled the blame on his attackers, who he said “forgot how to score goals”, but Isak had a slightly different take after the game.

Swedish football player Alexander Isak (C) arrives to attend a training session with Sweden's national team in Bosön in Lidingö on the outskirts of Stockholm, Sweden, on September 2, 2025. Record spending of £3 billion ($4 billion) during the summer transfer window further cements the Premier League as the "most competitive in world football", according to financial experts Deloitte. The window closed in dramatic style late on Monday, September 1, 2025, when Liverpool announced the British record £125 million signing of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak after a day of big moves. As quoted by Fotbollskanalen, Isak said: “It’s awful. Embarrassing. Disappointing, yet again. Everything is too bad. We’re playing too badly. The way we’re playing doesn’t work.

“We’re doing it too badly individually too. It’s a combination of everything. It’s sad that we’re in this situation. It’s a bit of a crisis situation. That’s clear.”

The 1-0 loss leaves them at the bottom of Group B with just a single point to their name. Switzerland and Kosovo has raced into the lead with 10 and seven points respectively, leaving Sweden’s World Cup hopes in the balance.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do. But it’s all too bad,” Isak admitted. “There has been a negative development since the World Cup qualifiers started, there hasn’t been any progress. It’s bitter.”

Sweden should certainly be doing better, in FourFourTwo’s opinion, that much is clear.

With Isak and Gyokeres at your disposal, along with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall, Aston Villa’s Victor Lindelof, and well-respected Stoke City goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, there should be enough quality to beat the likes of Kosovo.

Isak is still hunting down his first Premier League goal for Liverpool, and the Reds may have hoped he’d return from international duty in a better mood than he appears to be in.

Isak is valued at €120m, according to Transfermarkt.Liverpool next face Manchester United when Premier League action returns this weekend.

LAS VEGAS — A day before they open the regular season, the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday signed veteran forward Alexander Holtz to a two-year, $1.675 million contract.

Holtz, traded to Vegas last offseason from the New Jersey Devils, was on a professional tryout agreement with the Golden Knights this fall after a topsy-turvy first season.

The 23-year-old played in 53 games last season for the Golden Knights, recording just four goals and eight assists. The former first-round selection split his time between Vegas and its AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights.

Where Holtz settles this season remains to be seen, but he could wind up as one of Bruce Cassidy’s 12 active forwards, a group the coach has been impressed with.

“This could be the best group in terms of player one to 12 that I could ever coach just because of the depth and how it’s lining up for the Vegas Golden Knights,” Cassidy said. “Other teams have ways they access and that’s not disrespect. … Now we’ve got to get it off the paper and onto the rink looking like it’s supposed to.”

For his career, Holtz has garnered 23 goals and 46 points.

Vegas opens up at home Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Kings.

Alexander Zverev thinks that tournament organizers throughout the sport of tennis are rigging the courts to ensure that Carlos Alcarez and Jannik Sinner have deep runs.

Speaking on the court after his win over Valentin Royer at the Shanghai Masters, Zverev claimed that tournament directors were taking variety out of the types of courts to help Alcaraz and Sinner because they “prefer” them having success:

“I hate when it’s the same, to be honest. I think the tournament directors are going towards that direction because, obviously, they want Jannik and Carlos to do well every tournament, and that’s what they prefer. Nowadays, you can play almost the same way on every surface. I don’t like it. I’m not a fan of it. I think tennis needs different game styles, tennis needs a little bit of variety, and I think we’re lacking that right now.”

Alexander Zverev says tournament organizers are slowing down tennis courts to favor Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Zverev, the world No. 3, overcame an injury scare to beat Valentin Royer 6-4, 6-4 at the Shanghai Masters on Saturday but then voiced his displeasure with the way he felt the sport was heading.

“I hate when it’s the same, to be honest,” Zverev said in his on-court interview. “I think the tournament directors are going towards that direction because, obviously, they want Jannik and Carlos to do well every tournament, and that’s what they prefer.

Alcaraz and Sinner are the only two players to hold the No. 1 ranking since June 2024. They split this year’s four Grand Slams, and both are coming off title wins — Sinner at the China Open and Alcaraz at the Japan Open — though Alcaraz is missing the Shanghai Masters because of a left ankle injury.

Zverev had to be treated on court for a toe injury when serving for the match at 5-4, but it did not halt his progress.

“I landed funny on my toe, and after that I could barely do a step, so we’ll see what it is,” he said. “We will see if I will ever be healthy this year again, because it’s been a struggle, but I’m happy to be through.”

Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike said he can learn from teammate Alexander Isak and is confident he can play alongside the Sweden international.

Ekitike joined the Premier League champions from Eintracht Frankfurt in July and has four goals in seven games this season, while Isak arrived in a British-record deal from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day.

Outside the club, there has been a lot of debate about how head coach Arne Slot will manage the two players, but Ekitike said such competition is to be expected at a team of Liverpool’s stature.

“We play at such a big club,” the France international said. “They cannot have only one striker, so it is good he is here. I still have a lot of things to improve and learn. That is for the coach to decide who plays, it’s not up to me. I played with two strikers before and one striker, so I can do a lot of things, so if we have to play together, I can do that.”

Despite his fine start to life in a Liverpool shirt, Ekitike left Slot frustrated last week when he was sent off in his team’s 2-1 victory over Southampton in the Carabao Cup. As a result, the 23-year-old missed Saturday’s clash with Crystal Palace — a game that Liverpool lost 2-1.

“It wasn’t smart,” Ekitike said of his red card. “I felt disappointed to watch the boys from home [on Saturday], but I apologised to everyone already. That kind of thing won’t happen again, so I move on and focus on football.”

Liverpool will look to bounce back from the weekend’s defeat when they take on Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday night. However, the Reds will be without forward Federico Chiesa for the game at RAMS Park after he picked up a knock at Selhust Park.

“He got a little niggle in the last game against Palace,” Slot said in his prematch news conference. “He tried it in training today but he couldn’t end the session, so we decided not to take him because in a few days it is Chelsea.”

The Liverpool boss added: “Win, lose or draw, if you want to compete for trophies and wear a Liverpool shirt you have to give your all and play with good football. We conceded so many chances against Palace, so we can improve and those things I will show them tonight to the players.”

Taylor Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Sunday to clinch the Laver Cup for Team World.

The American started strong at San Francisco’s Chase Center before Zverev found his rhythm and mounted a late comeback in the second set.

But Fritz matched the intensity, holding firm to close out the match and secure victory.

“We’re going to have a fun night,” Fritz told ATP.com before the trophy ceremony. “Definitely popping some champagne in the locker room in a few minutes.”

The win delivered the cup to Team World’s Andre Agassi in his first tournament as captain, marking the team’s third triumph in four years.

“Just seeing these guys on the bench getting pumped up, seeing a legend of the sport like Andre jumping out of his seat cheering for me, it’s impossible not to be so fired up and just give it everything you have,” Fritz said.

Earlier, Carlos Alcaraz kept Team Europe’s hopes alive with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.

The win cut Team World’s lead to 12-9 in the first-to-13 event, where each Sunday match was worth three points.

Australia’s Alex de Minaur had previously moved Team World within one point of the title, defeating Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-4.

The 26-year-old earned seven points for his team over the weekend, having also beaten Zverev and teamed up with Alex Michelsen for a doubles win on Saturday.
