India and Pakistan’s players did not shake hands again as India comfortably won the sides’ feisty second meeting at the Asia Cup by six wickets in Dubai.

There were no handshakes when India beat Pakistan last Sunday – the rivals’ first meeting since the military conflict between the two nations earlier this year – which resulted in a complaint by Pakistan to organisers and doubts around their continuation in the competition.

Having both progressed to the Super Four stage, the captains did not acknowledge each other at the toss and the two teams did not shake hands after India cruised to a chase of 172 with seven balls to spare.

There were a series of heated flashpoints during the chase, most notably when the umpire had to step between opener Abhishek Sharma and Pakistan bowler Haris Rauf.

Abhishek and Shubman Gill exchanged words with various Pakistan bowlers during their first-wicket partnership of 105 in 59 balls for the first wicket, which broke the back of the chase.

Gill made 47 and Abhishek 74 from 39 before Tilak Varma sealed the win – India’s seventh in a row against Pakistan across formats – with a six to finish 30 not out.

Earlier, Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan hit 58 from 45 balls and celebrated his fifty by using his bat to mimic firing a gun.

India and Pakistan engaged in a four-day military conflict in April following a deadly militant attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir.

Pakistan reached 91-1 after 10 overs and took 42 runs from the last three but were punished for losing their way in between.

There was a run of 40 balls without a boundary during the middle overs – India seamer Shivam Dube particularly effective in taking 2-33.

Unlike after last week’s meeting when captain Suryakumar Yadav paid tributes to India’s armed forces, neither he nor Pakistan captain Salman Agha referenced the wider situation at the post-match presentation.

Pakistan play Sri Lanka on Tuesday, while India’s next game is against Bangladesh on Wednesday.

If they finish in the top two of the four-team group they will meet again in Sunday’s final.

In the chase, India got a blockbuster start as Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill racked up a century partnership inside nine overs, bringing the required run rate down to close to six and a half runs per over.

Abhishek stormed to a 24-ball half-century after pulling Shaheen Afridi for a six on the first ball of the chase. Gill made 47 runs off 28 balls, cracking eight fours in his aggressive knock. The duo amassed an opening stand of 105 runs from 9.5 overs.

During this, Abhishek had a verbal battle with Rauf, which got intense and theatric. In Haris†first over, which was inside the powerplay, he had a verbal run-in with Abhishek after getting whacked for a four. On the last ball of the same over, Gill pulled Rauf for a boundary, and Rauf and Abhishek resumed their war of words.

England have started their T20 series with India on a sour note after being thrashed in the first fixture at Eden Gardens.

Heading into this five-match batch of games, England are on an unbeaten three-series run, yet it is already a tough ask to extend that streak on the back of losing by seven wickets on Wednesday.

Despite Jos Buttler producing a defiant 68 from 44 balls, England succumbed to 132 all out in their 20 overs, providing India with the platform to attack.

Abhishek Sharma responded with an exhilarating 79 from just 34 balls, incredibly hitting eight sixes during a memorable knock that ensured an easy win for the home side.

Things looked bleak for England from the third ball as Phil Salt departed for a duck, with only one other player – Harry Brook with 17 – in the top eight reaching double figures.

Buttler held firm to keep England competitive to a certain extent, but Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel all taking at least two wickets as they decimated the away side’s batting lineup.

By the time that England made their breakthrough with the ball, India were already on 41 after 4.2 overs, with Jofra Archer taking the wickets of Sanju Samson (26) and Suryakumar Yadav (0).

Nevertheless, Abhishek was simply unstoppable with the bat with 13 of the 34 deliveries that he faced ended up at or over the boundary.

Adil Rashid stopped that charge with what was essentially a token wicket towards the end of the run chase, leaving Tilak Varma‘s 19 from 16 balls to seal the win after just 12.5 overs.
