Quentin Grimes is returning to the Philadelphia 76ers after breaking out as a starter during the back half of the 2024-25 season.

Grimes agreed to sign a one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer that holds a no-trade clause, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The Sixers previously made Grimes a restricted free agent by tendering him the $8.7 million qualifying offer.

The Athletic’s Tony Jones reported in September that Grimes had also been offered a “one-year balloon payment” which would involve waiving the no-trade clause that accompanies the the qualifying offer.

Grimes arrived in Philadelphia last February as part of the Caleb Martin trade with the Dallas Mavericks. He had averaged 10.2 points while mostly coming off the bench in Dallas.

Injuries in the Sixers’ rotation then opened up a starting spot for Grimes, who responded with one of the most productive stretches of his career.

In 28 appearances and 25 starts for the Sixers, Grimes averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals while playing more than 33 minutes per night.

He shot 46.9 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from deep while making his case to keep a spot in the rotation next season.

The Sixers signaled Grimes’ importance to the team going forward this offseason, when NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on a Bleacher Report livestream in early September the team was looking to clear cap space in order to pay him.

Grimes will play an important role for the Sixers early in the season with second-year guard Jared McCain recovering from surgery for a thumb injury. McCain will be reevaluated in four weeks, the team said.

Philadelphia will hope the return of Grimes alongside Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey and McCain will help propel the team back to the playoffs following a brutal 2024-25 season.
