San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been ruled out for his team’s Week 8 matchup against the Houston Texans amid his recovery from turf toe.

Mac Jones will make his sixth start of the season and will earn another $100,000 in incentives if he leads the 49ers to a win, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He has earned $400,000 in incentives since taking over for Purdy.

The 49ers are set to kick off against the Texans this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Purdy has been limited by a lingering turf toe injury to just two games this season.

The quarterback initially suffered a toe injury alongside a left shoulder injury during a Week 1 win at the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 7.

After sitting out two games, Purdy returned on Sept. 28 to start a Week 4 loss to the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars.

Although he finished out the loss, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy reported toe soreness afterward.

Shanahan later confirmed that Purdy had “reaggravated” his toe injury, and that he was considered “week to week” heading into Week 6.

Purdy has since been listed as a limited participant in the last two weeks of 49ers practices, although David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard reported Thursday the Niners were “pleased” with his progress.

The Niners have turned to Jones in Purdy’s absence. Jones has led the 49ers to a 4-1 record without Purdy, although he was most recently held to just 152 passing yards with no touchdown and an interception as Christian McCaffrey powered the team to a Week 7 win over the visiting Atlanta Falcons.

Getting Purdy back under center could allow Shanahan to turn his focus on the passing game and take some of the pressure off McCaffrey, who is coming off an injury-riddled 2024 campaign.

But with Purdy unable to play against the Texans, the 49ers are likely to once more saddle McCaffrey with a heavy workload in Houston.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is still uncertain to play in Week 8, but he is making progress in his recovery from a turf toe injury.

During his weekly appearance on KNBR (h/t David Bonilla of 49ersWebZone.com), 49ers general manager John Lynch said Purdy is “getting closer” to returning:

“What I can tell everyone is that we’re being [incredibly diligent]. We’ve gotten so many opinions on this thing, and it’s been pretty consistent. He’s doing a really good job. We’re taking the appropriate measures, and what I can tell you is he gets better each week, each day. I do think we’re getting closer to him returning.”

Last week saw Purdy return to practice for the first time since on a limited basis for the first time since Week 4. He was also a limited participant in their first practice session this week on Wednesday.

The toe ailment first sidelined Purdy for Weeks 2 and 3. Before Purdy was sidelined, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network classified the injury as a “turf toe variant.”

He came back for Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars but suffered a setback. Head coach Kyle Shanahan then called Purdy “week-to-week.”

Mac Jones has been the team’s starter in Purdy’s place. He’s fared quite well, leading the team to a 4-1 record in his five starts and completing 67.0 percent of his passes for six touchdowns, four interceptions and 1,404 yards.

Jones has been dealing with his own injuries (knee, oblique), but he was a full participant on Wednesday and will make his sixth start if Purdy is unable to go on Sunday.

The 49ers are off to a strong 5-2 start despite being without several key players for multiple games due to injuries. They will go for their sixth win of the season, which would match their total from all of 2024, against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on Sunday.

Christian McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 20–10 on Sunday, capped by a late-game touchdown from CMC.

McCaffrey’s historic night included rushing for both touchdowns and 129 yards on the ground, along with 72 receiving yards, marking his seventh career game with at least 100 rushing yards and 70 receiving yards, breaking a tie with Marshall Faulk and Priest Holmes for the most games.

Standing in for an injured Brock Purdy, Mac Jones completed 17-of-26 passes for 152 yards and one interception.

CMC thrilled fans with his historic performance that carried the 49ers to a win on Sunday.

It was a scoreless first quarter until the Falcons opened the second with a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.Â

Both teams committed turnovers in the second, but the 49ers capitalized, adding a field goal after an earlier touchdown to head into halftime with a 10-3 advantage.

The 49ers opened the second half with a field goal, and the Falcons answered with a touchdown to stay within reach, trailing by three heading into the fourth quarter.

Despite punting on their opening fourth-quarter possession, San Francisco stopped Atlanta on downs at their 35-yard line and capitalized with a McCaffrey touchdown to take a commanding 10 points lead with just under 2:30 left to seal the win.

The win improved the 49ers to 5–2 on the season, tying them with the Los Angeles Rams for first place in the NFC West. Meanwhile, the Falcons fell to 3–3 and dropped in the NFC South standings.

The 49ers will hit the road next Sunday to face the Houston Texans.

The San Francisco 49ers could use some defensive reinforcements given the injuries they are dealing with this season, and they are reportedly interested in a handful of New York Jets players ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported Sunday there is belief around the league the 49ers will inquire about edge rushers Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald IV and linebacker Quincy Williams.

Notably, former Jets head coach Robert Saleh is the defensive coordinator for the 49ers. Cimini called that trio of defensive players “some of Saleh’s favorites in New York,” so there is already an obvious connection in place.

What’s more, Williams is playing on the final year of his deal, so the Jets may want to move him and get something back in return before he potentially leaves next offseason.

New York is 0-6 and already seems to be playing out the string on a lost season. Whether it is these defensive players, running back Breece Hall or someone else, it is an obvious trade candidate team that could start focusing on the future with draft assets.

San Francisco is a team that entered the season with a win-now plan, and a 4-2 start has done nothing to quell those expectations. However, defensive stars Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are both out for the season.

Williams could help make up for some of the veteran leadership lost with Warner in the middle of the defense after four straight seasons with more than 100 tackles, while Johnson and McDonald are potential replacements for Bosa on the edge.

It is unrealistic to expect either of them to be as productive as Bosa, but the 49ers need healthy players to bolster their depth chart.

And Saleh is someone who is familiar with the options from the Jets and could maximize their impact after a trade.

George Kittle is eying up a Week 7 return after an early-season stint on injured reserve due to a torn hamstring.

The San Francisco 49ers tight end told reporters Thursday he “fully plans” to play against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night, though the decision will ultimately rest with head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Kittle was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice, as was quarterback Brock Purdy and wideout Juaun Jennings. Receiver Ricky Pearsall was a non-participant as San Francisco’s injury issues continued in earnest.

At points this year, the Niners have dealt with injuries to all of the players listed above, alongside top wideout Brandon Aiyuk (still recovering from last season’s torn ACL) and superstar edge-rusher Nick Bosa (out for the season with a torn ACL).

The loss of Kittle has been a major one. The 32-year-old Kittle is a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro and is coming off one of the best seasons of his career (78 catches for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns). He’s impactful as a blocker as well, making his absence a major detriment for the Niners.

Despite being arguably the most injury-prone team in football this season, however, San Francisco has still managed to go 4-2. If Kittle is able to return in Week 7, it will provide a major boost, especially with the Falcons, Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams on tap in three of the next four weeks.

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly have interest in a trade for All-Pro pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson should the Cincinnati Bengals make him available.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Niners view Hendrickson as an “ideal fit” for their defensive system.

However, Fowler added that the Bengals currently have “no plans” to trade Hendrickson and remain “all in” on trying to win this season despite being 2-4 and the fact that star quarterback Joe Burrow is on injured reserve with a toe injury.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano echoed Fowler’s report, noting that he has also heard the Bengals aren’t looking to move on from Hendrickson.

Of course, things could conceivably change in the coming weeks if the Bengals continue to struggle and see their record suffer even more.

Hendrickson, 30, is in the midst of the final year of his contract. He spent the past two offseasons trying to land an extension, but all the Bengals were willing to give was a reworked deal that is paying him $29 million this season.

The Bengals stand to potentially lose Hendrickson for nothing in free agency, which gives them incentive to move him by the Nov. 4 trade deadline if a playoff berth is looking unlikely at that point.

San Francisco makes perfect sense as a landing spot for the four-time Pro Bowler and one-time First Team All-Pro since the 49ers lost superstar pass-rusher Nick Bosa for the season due to a torn ACL.

Bryce Huff has done well with a team-high three sacks, but he is more of a specialist than an every-down player, and the 49ers could undoubtedly use a pass-rushing threat on the other side.

Hendrickson had back-to-back 17.5-sack seasons in 2023 and 2024, and he finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting last season.

He had 13.5 sacks or more in four of five seasons entering 2025, and he is trending toward another big year with four sacks through six games.

Despite dealing with injuries to Bosa and several other key players, the 49ers have managed to hang in there with a 4-2 record.

The Niners are getting healthier with players such as tight end George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy trending toward a return, and adding Hendrickson to the mix would likely energize the team even more.

While nothing appears to be happening on that front presently, it merits watching as the deadline draws closer and the Bengals’ place in the standings becomes clearer.

Depleted by injuries, the San Francisco 49ers could finally get some relief this week.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan said that star tight end George Kittle, who has been out since Week 1 with a hamstring injury, is expected to return to practice this week ahead of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Kittle suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of the 49ers’ season opener against the Seattle Seahawks and later landed on the injured reserve, meaning he’d have to miss at least four games.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported earlier this month that Kittle had been “doing great” and faced “no setbacks,” but he wasn’t quite ready to return to the field after just four games.

While Shanahan didn’t give a definitive answer on whether Kittle will play this week, it’s a good sign that he’s at least expected to practice.

Kittle is coming off a second consecutive season with 1,000-plus yards, recording 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns last year despite missing two games due to a hamstring injury. He started the 2025 campaign off strong with 25 yards and a touchdown in the first half of Week 1, but the injury halted his momentum.

Kittle’s potential return couldn’t come at a better time for the Niners. San Francisco has had arguably the worst injury luck of any team this season, and things aren’t getting any better.

The 49ers were without Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy, Ricky Pearsall and Kittle on Sunday against the Bucs, and they ended up losing star linebacker Fred Warner to a season-ending ankle injury during that game.

But San Francisco has managed to stay afloat so far, heading into Week 7 at 4-2. The Niners’ surprising success is largely due to the breakout season from backup quarterback Mac Jones, who has thrown for 1,252 yards and six touchdowns in four games.

If Jones has Kittle, one of the league’s best tight ends, this week, it would make his job significantly easier.

The San Francisco 49ers have already been depleted by injuries this season, and another key member of the defense has been lost for the season.

After being carted off in the first quarter of Sunday’s 30-19 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with an air cast on his right leg, linebacker Fred Warner was diagnosed with a dislocated and broken right ankle, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters.

He will need surgery and miss the remainder of the season. On Monday, Warner released a statement to fans on Instagram and included an inspirational quote from Kobe Bryant:

“There’s certain games you wake up knowing it’s gonna be your day, and yesterday was one of those days,” Warner posted on Instagram on Monday. “I knew I was bout to go off, and then boom everything over in one instant that was completely unpreventable. The love everyone has shown me and the prayers being had for me mean the world to me. Some ask why I was able to smile on the cart heading in and it’s because (aside from the shock) I have complete peace in knowing Gods plan is so completely perfect and I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I’ve had the privilege of being able to have a very healthy 8 seasons and now it’s time to inspire through the comeback I’m bout to have. It will be LEGENDARY and right on time God willing. Thank you guys, love always GO NINERSðŸðŸ¾â¤ï¸”

Warner, who agreed to a three-year, $63 million extension that made him the league’s highest-paid linebacker this offseason, is not only one of the 49ers’ best defensive players, but one of the best players in the entire NFL.

Through five games, the veteran had racked up 50 tackles, two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. His 28 solo tackles are the fifth-most in the NFL this year. Needless to say, losing Warner for any amount of time would be a huge loss for the 49ers defense.

San Francisco has arguably had the worst injury luck of any team so far this season. The Niners came into Sunday’s matchup missing Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, Brock Purdy and Ricky Pearsall and more, and a depleted roster has been the story all year.

Yet the 49ers have managed to thrive even with all the injuries. They came into Sunday 4-1, sitting in first place in the NFC West after last week’s overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Much of San Francisco’s success can be attributed to the unexpected breakout of backup quarterback Mac Jones, who came into Sunday having thrown for 905 yards, six touchdowns and an interception in three starts, all of which were wins.

Even if Jones keeps up his tremendous play, losing Warner will be a significant downgrade.

Warner, who has spent his entire eight-year career with the Niners, has missed just one game since coming into the league, and he played through a broken bone in his ankle in 2024.

Kevin Durant was enjoying what he was seeing out of Baker Mayfield during Sunday’s matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Francisco 49ers.

“Aye Baker, you f–kin HOOPIN,” the Houston Rockets superstar posted on social media.

It’s unclear if Durant was impressed with a moment in particular, but Mayfield certainly provided a few options:

The fiery Mayfield has become one of the best watches in the NFL as his career resurgence continues in Tampa Bay. He threw for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2023 and followed that up with a career year (4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns) last season, leading the Bucs to the playoffs in each campaign.

Through the first five games this season he threw for 1,283 yards, 10 touchdowns and just one interception, with the Bucs going 4-1. But while the results speak for themselves, Mayfield’s passion and ability to turn seeming disasters into big plays have added major entertainment value to the mix.

Oh, and he’s doing all of this without ever having his top wide receiver trio of Emeka Egbuka, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin healthy at the same time.

But Mayfield just keeps finding a way. It’s always a good sign when players from other sports are showing you love. Week after week, highlight after highlight, Mayfield has everybody enjoying the show.

Mac Jones led the San Francisco 49ers to a shocking 26-23 upset over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, but not before his day began in very bizarre fashion.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, “That morning at the team hotel in Marina del Rey, Jones told teammates he was on his balcony when he looked out at the water and saw a floating dead body. Someone called the police. As the 49ers loaded buses for the stadium, players watched investigators and even a coroner’s van pull into the marina. On Friday afternoon, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the incident was still under investigation.”

Jones was able to put the jarring episode behind him, throwing for 342 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the win. He dealt with a sore knee, cramping and even vomited during the game, as Russini noted, but he persisted.

“He played his ass off, man,” Niners’ head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters. “He was unbelievable in the first half. He got banged up there in the second half and battled through it. He protected the ball and, going against that defense and throwing the ball that many times, not having a turnover and protecting the ball like he did, I can’t say enough good things about Mac.”

Jones has been a revelation in backup duty for the Niners, throwing for 905 yards, six touchdowns and one interception while completing 66.7 percent of his passes and taking five sacks in three starts this year for the injured Brock Purdy. The Niners have been beset by injuries in general—Nick Bosa, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings were among the other players out on Thursday night—but somehow have managed to open the season with a 4-1 record.
