MILWAUKEE – To get back in the driver’s seat of the playoff race, the Reds needed some added gas. What better than to have plenty of relievers capable of throwing it?

Aided by another 4 1/3 scoreless innings from their bullpen, the Reds are on the cusp of reaching the postseason. A 3-1 victory over the Brewers on Friday at American Family Field came shortly after the Mets were handed a loss by the Marlins in Miami. That put Cincinnati (82-78) and New York (82-78) into a tie for the third National League Wild Card spot with two games remaining.

“Huge,” catcher Tyler Stephenson said of the bullpen. “Theyâ€re the reason weâ€re here. Just having those guys who can go multiple innings is huge this late in the year. Every single one of those guys wants the ball right now. Theyâ€re ready.â€

The Reds, who hold the tiebreaker advantage, can clinch the playoff berth on Saturday with the combo of one win and another Mets loss. Therefore, the work is far from finished.

Reds starter Zack Littell pitched well over 4 2/3 innings with one run and three hits allowed but had to navigate some traffic in each inning. Manager Terry Francona turned to the bullpen after Jackson Chourio reached on a De La Cruz fielding error with one out in the fifth.

“If I managed with my heart, I would have left him in. I just donâ€t think this is the right time to do that,” Francona said.

Especially with the way Reds relievers are dealing right now, the decision was a no-brainer. In 11 games since Sept. 15, Cincinnati’s bullpen has a Major League best 0.94 ERA.

First in was Connor Phillips, who took over and struck out Brice Turang with a 98 mph fastball to end the inning, as he worked 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.

“We have nine options down there. Everybody is ready to go and theyâ€re all sick. Theyâ€re all really, really good options,” Phillips said. “I think itâ€s really a ‘next guy’ mentality. Get it as clean as possible to the next guy and just keep it rolling.â€

Phillips, who moved to 5-0 with a 2.66 ERA in 19 appearances and has stranded all 10 of his inherited runners, has pitched 10 scoreless and hitless innings over his last eight appearances. A former starter who spent all of 2024 struggling in the Minors, he returned to the big leagues for the second time this season on Aug. 18.

“Connor Phillips has been a gamechanger for us,” Francona said. “Weâ€re dying for our young guys to do good. But then to see it right in the middle of a pennant race, thatâ€s exciting. Kind of gets your heart pumping a little bit.â€

Graham Ashcraft had a clean seventh inning with one strikeout and Tony Santillan did likewise in the eighth inning. Emilio Pagán took care of the ninth inning for his 31st save.

Both Santillan and Pagán were working for a third straight day.

“We all kind of pull for each other,” said Santillan, who leads the NL with 80 appearances. “When one guy has a good inning, the other guy wants to follow it up with a better one – if not match it. Weâ€ve got a bunch of psychos. Everybody is always ready to take the ball, it doesnâ€t matter who it is.â€

Helping the bullpen turn the corner down the stretch was the addition of not only Phillips, but also moving starters Nick Martinez and Chase Burns into relief roles.

“Itâ€s deeper,” Francona said. “So itâ€s not just them getting outs, but itâ€s times when other guys donâ€t have to pitch. Tony and Pagán have pitched a ton, but itâ€s taken a little bit of the load off. Getting them healthy and feeling good, theyâ€re good pitchers.â€

It was a 1-1 game in the top of the sixth inning when Gavin Lux led off with a double to left field and went to third base on Jake Bauers’ fielding error. Miguel Andujar’s RBI single scored Lux with the go-ahead run. A fortunate bounce followed when Elly De La Cruz’s grounder up the middle skipped off second base and went for a single that put runners on the corners.

A one-out sacrifice fly by Stephenson scored Andujar for a two-run Reds lead. If the Reds – who have dropped 13 straight series to the Brewers – don’t clinch Saturday, they can still get into October if they simply hold serve with the Mets the next two days.

“Be ready to play tomorrow and see what happens and then worry about Sunday,” Stephenson said. “Canâ€t look too far ahead. Thereâ€s a lot of emotions, itâ€s exciting times. But we have to go out and take care of business and play like we did tonight.”

It’s becoming pretty clear that low torque and onset putters aren’t going anywhere, and one new model just captured its third worldwide win.

In his second start since switching to a TaylorMade Spider ZT putter, Michael Kim won the FedEx Open de France by one shot after a final-round 65.

ST. LOUIS — As celebratory prosecco and beer poured down his face, Christian Yelich soaked in the satisfaction of the Milwaukee Brewers’ third straight NL Central Division title.

“This is the why,” Yelich said Sunday after the Brewers clinched, courtesy of the Cubs’ 1-0 loss in Cincinnati. “This is why everything’s harped on throughout the year. Why we pay attention to detail, why there’s tough love throughout the season, why you keep grinding and why you keep trying to get better is for these moments — the fact that you can celebrate with your teammates.”

Carrying the best record in baseball, the Brewers won their fourth division title in the past five seasons and yet feel like the underdogs as the playoffs loom.

“In baseball, any team could beat anybody, especially in short series. Obviously, we’re not going to be favored. Everyone’s going to kind of point to our question marks and how there’s other teams that have more experienced players and, on paper, super talented rosters,” Yelich said. “But I think that gives our team a freedom. Nobody thinks that you’re going to be able to do this. So go out there and just play.”

Milwaukee lost Willy Adames to free agency and traded away closer Devin Williams in the offseason, and it was unclear what contributions veterans Brandon Woodruff (shoulder surgery) and Yelich (back) would be able to provide.

Both were able to be key players, although Woodruff’s status for the postseason is in question after he went on the injured list Sunday with what the team described as a moderate lat strain.

“Are we the most talented? No. Are we going to go up against teams far more talented with four times the payroll? Sure, but it doesn’t bother this team,” manager Pat Murphy said.

Since 2018, the Brewers have lost in the wild-card round four times, in the division series once and in the NL Championship Series once. The franchise’s only pennant came in 1982.

“I heard somebody say we’ve got the regular season figured out, now we’ve got to figure out the playoffs. That’s one of the most absurd comments I’ve ever heard,” Murphy said, emphasizing his squad’s body of work.

After losing 5-1 to St. Louis, the Brewers had to wait less than a half hour before the Cubs’ game ended. The team put on navy blue “division champs” shirts, sprayed bottles of chilled prosecco and dumped cans of beer on each other’s heads.

A blue flag with late announcer Bob Uecker’s signature hung in the soaked visitors locker room.

Owner Mark Attanasio suggested there was some “Brewer magic or Uecker magic” in this team.

“It’s really just the culture. We show up every spring training with the goal of winning the division,” said Sal Frelick, in his third year with Milwaukee. “So, it’s been great. I’m fortunate to be able to do it every year.”

The Brewers gathered on the Busch Stadium infield for a team photo and were about to disperse when Murphy came up the stairs from the dugout, almost left out of the moment.

“When we started the year, nobody thought we’d be here at this point. Obviously, we’ve had our share of injuries. Nobody could have imagined we’d be in this spot right now,” Woodruff said.

The Brewers were at their best during a 29-4 stretch in July and August, turning a four-game deficit into a commanding nine-game advantage in the division.

“We’ve done a heck of a job as a group to get to this point,” Woodruff said. “And you know what? There’s still a lot of baseball left for the Brewers.”

Last year, they won the Central by 10 games before dropping the wild-card series to the Mets — losing the decisive Game 3 after Williams squandered a two-run lead in the ninth inning. Pete Alonso’s three-run home run was the key.

To Murphy, who took over as Milwaukee’s skipper before this past season, that’s the fickle nature of the playoffs.

“It takes a lot of things to go your way, and sometimes having great talent helps that,” Murphy said. “I don’t worry about this team, and I don’t worry about what anybody says about this team. I get to live it every day and see how special they are.”

WASHINGTON — When Matt Olson crushed a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning on Monday night at Nationals Park, it wasnâ€t just any home run.

It was his fifth homer in his past nine games, and his third straight game with a home run. The last time he had a streak like that was in September 2023, when he hit long balls in four consecutive games.

Olson, who on Sunday had secured his fourth straight season with at least 25 home runs, dominated the Nats†pitching staff as he racked up four RBIs and led the Braves to an 11-3 win to open the four-game set.

Olsonâ€s offensive outpouring backed Spencer Striderâ€s second straight quality start, as the righty threw seven innings of one-run ball and allowed just four hits (one home run).

The highlight of Olsonâ€s 4-for-5 night was undeniably that three-run blast. Olson jumped Nats starter Mitchell Parker immediately, singling in his first at-bat then doubling to lead off the fourth inning.

By the time Olson stepped to the plate in the fifth, with two on and two outs, there seemed only one logical result: Another hit.

Olson mashed a curveball from Parker a Statcast-projected 400 feet into the right-field stands.

“He’s a professional hitter,†Nationals interim manager Miguel Cairo said. “He can hit lefties, he can hit righties. He’s a professional hitter. He’s a really good first baseman. A superstar. You make a mistake with him, he makes you pay.”

“He jumped on one bad pitch,†Parker said. “We were doing well, he just got the curveball and he did what he was supposed to do.”

Arguably, itâ€s no fault of Parkerâ€s — even if he did leave the 80.5 mph pitch middle-middle to one of Atlantaâ€s best hitters. The first baseman has been on an obscene tear of late, hitting .386 in 13 games in this final month of the season.

That continued on Monday, when he finished a triple shy of the cycle for the fourth time this season (the 10th time in his career) while tallying four RBIs for just the second time this year (July 2 vs. the Angels).

But, while the numbers are impressive, itâ€s Olsonâ€s demeanor that really strikes a chord with his teammates and coaches.

“Itâ€s just how he’s been,†manager Brian Snitker said. “He’s swinging the bat really, really well and looking at having a really good year again. So, it’s nice to see. …

“[Itâ€s] just the consistency and stability that you get with a guy like that, and the teammates know he’s going to come to work every day and he’s going to prepare and he’s going to show up and play. I mean, he signed the contract, and he plays the games, and he’s just such a calming influence on guys, I think. And just the steadiness and professionalism and everything that he brings, it’s really special.â€

Rookie catcher Drake Baldwin, who went 3-for-5 with a home run of his own, echoed his managerâ€s sentiments.

“Olson just comes in here and does it every day,†Baldwin said. “He’s the same guy every day. He goes and gets his work done. I mean, he’s just a lead-by-example guy and a great guy to have in the clubhouse. …

“If he’s struggling a little bit or doing really well, itâ€s literally the same guy. And I think that’s huge in baseball, because of all the ups and downs. I mean, tonight he had a huge night, and just seems like he’s going to go in there tomorrow and he’s going to do everything the exact same and and play his hardest.â€
