Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill struggle as India falter in first ODI vs Australia
The hosts missed crucial opportunities when Tim Seifert dropped Jacob Bethell off a top edge in the strong northwest wind, and James Neesham later dropped Brook.Brook’s dropped catch proved costly as he went on to score 78 from 35 balls, forming a substantial 129-run partnership with Salt.Shortly after being dropped, Brook demonstrated his power by hitting a massive pull shot that travelled over 100 meters beyond the midwicket boundary. “It felt good,” Brook said, after the opening match of the series on Saturday was washed out. “It’s always nice to contribute. It was just nice to get some runs out there and hit a couple out of the park.”Brook’s innings included six fours and five sixes before he was caught at long-on attempting a lofted drive.Salt played a measured innings of 85 from 56 balls, rotating the strike effectively and capitalising on loose deliveries.”It’s always nice to contribute. It was just nice to get some runs out there and hit a couple out of the park,” Brook said about their partnership strategy of staying “calm and composed” while “looking to manipulate the field and put them under as much pressure as possible.”Tom Banton contributed a quick 29 from 12 balls at the end, helping England achieve Christchurch’s highest T20 total.New Zealand’s chase began poorly, losing Tim Robinson and Rachin Ravindra in the second over.Seifert and Mark Chapman provided some resistance with a 69-run partnership, but their dismissals around the 10-over mark effectively ended New Zealand’s hopes.England’s bowlers Adil Rashid (4-32), Liam Dawson (2-38), and Brydon Carse (2-27) maintained tight control as New Zealand were dismissed for 171.The series continues with the third T20 match scheduled for Thursday night at Eden Park in Auckland.
Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra isn’t dwelling on the fact that his team went 0-6 during the preseason.
After the Heat lost 141-125 to the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday to close out the preseason with a winless record, Spoelstra told reporters, “We’re not going to focus on what the record was in the preseason. We’ll focus on the sum of the things that were consistent to how we want to play.”
According to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, this year marks only the second time the Heat have failed to win a game during the preseason. The only other instance occurred in 2007, and Miami went on to post a 15-67 record during the regular season.
It seems unlikely that Miami will bottom to that degree in 2025-26, as the team has reached the playoffs in six straight seasons, which is tied for the longest streak in franchise history.
However, the Heat are coming off what was largely a disappointing 2024-25 season, as their 37-45 record was their worst since 2014-15 when they also went 37-45.
Miami finished with the 10th-best record in the Eastern Conference last season, but it managed to advance through the postseason play-in tournament before getting swept out of the first round by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Since reaching the NBA Finals in two out of four seasons, the Heat have experienced back-to-back exits in the first round of the playoffs, raising questions about whether they can compete with the projected top teams in the East, such as the Cavs, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers.
The Heat are led by a pair of All-Stars in guard Tyler Herro and center Bam Adebayo, and Herro is coming off a career year that saw him average 23.9 points per game.
Herro underwent foot surgery last month, though, and he is expected to miss at least the Heat’s first 12 games.
Perhaps the biggest question surrounding the Heat is whether they have enough in addition to Adebayo to weather the storm until Herro returns.
Some of the players Miami will lean on during that time include newly acquired guard Norman Powell, veteran wing Andrew Wiggins, guards Davion Mitchell and Terry Rozier, wing Jaime Jaquez Jr. and center Kel’el Ware.
The Heat will get their regular season started on Wednesday with a road game against the Magic.
Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills suffered their second straight defeat on Monday night at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons.
The surprising result led to a major shift in betting odds for both Super Bowl and MVP:
Though Allen remains a favorite, he is tied with Patrick Mahomes at +200 to win MVP, just ahead of Baker Mayfield (+400).
Allen and the Buffalo offense turned in an underwhelming performance Monday without the injured Dalton Kincaid and Curtis Samuel.
Allen had some questionable moments, including a shovel pass to the outside on a fourth down late in the third quarter.
The disappointing performance was capped by an interception as the Bills drove down the field late in the game.
Allen didn’t receive much help from his supporting cast. Joshua Palmer led the Bills with 60 receiving yards, but that came on two catches. Buffalo’s No. 1 wide out, Khalil Shakir, only had 33 receiving yards.
The lackluster showing from the Bills looked even worse in comparison to the Falcons. Bijan Robinson had 238 total yards, 170 of which came on the ground, and Drake London posted 158 receiving yards.
Buffalo has a chance to rest during its Week 7 bye. After that, the Bills have a Week 8 trip to Carolina before they face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9.
India vs West Indies (AP Photo/Manish Swarup) NEW DELHI: The Indian bowling unit demonstrated resilience on a challenging sub-continental pitch, positioning India close to achieving a 2-0 series sweep against West Indies on day four of the second Test. India needs 58 more runs on the final day, having reached 63 for 1 at stumps while chasing 121.The Indian bowlers collectively bowled for 118.5 overs in the second innings. Jasprit Bumrah took 3/44, Kuldeep Yadav claimed 3/104, Ravindra Jadeja picked 1/102, Mohammed Siraj grabbed 2/43, and Washington Sundar secured 1/80.West Indies were bowled out for 390, setting India a target of 121 runs to chase in the remaining 18 overs of day four.KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan remained unbeaten on 25 and 30 respectively, playing cautiously after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal for 8 runs.Siraj’s crucial breakthrough with the second new ball, followed by Kuldeep Yadav’s effective spell against the lower-middle order, helped India gain momentum in the post-lunch session.John Campbell scored 115 runs from 199 balls while Shai Hope made 103 from 214 deliveries. Their 177-run partnership for the third wicket showcased West Indies’ fighting spirit.Jayden Seales contributed 32 runs and Justin Greaves remained unbeaten on 50, putting together a 79-run stand for the final wicket to extend the match to day five. The West Indies team managed to score two centuries, forcing India to bat again in the match. All Indian bowlers contributed effectively with timely wickets throughout the innings. The Indian bowling attack persevered through long spells across both innings despite conditions that weren’t favourable for either spin or pace bowling. The Feroz Shah Kotla pitch remained unresponsive even on day four. While the low bounce of deliveries contributed to West Indies batsmen’s dismissals, their shot selection was largely responsible for their downfall. The match proceedings became so repetitive that broadcast coverage shifted focus to discussing the upcoming ODI series against Australia.John Campbell achieved his first Test century in 25 matches with a six off Ravindra Jadeja over cow corner. The flat pitch made it comfortable for batsmen to handle spin bowling until Campbell’s unfortunate dismissal through an ambitious reverse sweep, confirmed leg-before by DRS.Campbell’s wicket didn’t immediately impact the West Indies’ momentum as captain Roston Chase scored 40 runs and partnered with Hope for a 51-run fourth-wicket stand. The match seemed to be heading towards a challenging fourth-innings target for India. However, after the 80th over, Bumrah and Siraj used the new ball effectively, troubling Hope with short-pitched deliveries despite the unresponsive nature of the pitch.
Ina Kim-Schaad won the 2025 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship for the second time on Thursday, draining an 18-foot putt on the fifth extra hole at Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Dunes Course to claim a dramatic victory over her opponent, Hanley Long. The 23-hole final match was the longest in U.S. Women’s Mid-Am history.
At 42 years old, Kim-Schaad is a USGA event veteran, with this year marking her 20th USGA championship appearance. With the win, she became the fourth-oldest champion ever at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Am, and the first woman to win the Mid-Am twice since Julia Potter-Bobb in 2016. Kim-Schaad won her first Mid-Am title in 2019 at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz.
“I’m still overwhelmed with emotion, honestly,” Kim-Schaad said Thursday. “I truly love this place, and my husband and I got married in Carmel. To do it at such a special place, golf course, with my family here and my husband on the bag, his birthday day week, and for a second time, it’s like there’s not even enough language to put around just all the feels that I’m feeling.”

Kim-Schaad fired stroke-play rounds of 72-79 (seven over) to take the 45th seed in the match-play Round of 64. She won her first match 1 up; her Round of 32 match 2 and 1, her Round of 16 match 3 and 2, her quarterfinal match 3 and 1, and her semi-final match 2 and 1, where she took out No. 1 seed Katherine Zhu.
In the final match against Long, 27, Kim-Schaad won the first hole and never trailed, but Long managed to tie the match four different times — including on the 17th hole. Kim-Schaad ultimately prevailed with a dramatic birdie on the fifth extra hole.
“Downhill left-to-right ticklers are not my specialty, but I just wanted to give it a chance,” Kim-Schaad said. “I thought if I nestled it up there and two-putted, [Long] was going to have a really difficult par anyway. My genuine intention was nestle it up there and give it a chance, and it just happened to drop.”
“It was an absolute battle out there the entire day,” Long said. “Hats off to our champion. She absolutely crushed it today. Honestly, I’m just so proud of my grit and determination throughout the entire day, keeping my head up and held high and never giving up.”
With the win, Kim-Schaad will receive an exemption into the next 10 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships, the 2026 and 2027 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships and the 2026 U.S. Women’s Open Championship at Riviera Country Club.
The 2026 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship will be played at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, N.J., Sept. 29-Oct. 3.
West Indies cricketers (Pic credit: WI Cricket) NEW DELHI: The West Indies players paid a heartfelt tribute to their former all-rounder Bernard Julien by wearing black armbands on the opening day of the second and final Test against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Friday. He also represented the Caribbean side in 12 ODIs, picking up 18 wickets and scoring 86 runs. Julien was part of the historic West Indies squad that lifted the inaugural Menâ€s ODI World Cup in 1975 under Clive Lloydâ€s captaincy.During that campaign, Julien produced standout performances — claiming 4 for 20 against Sri Lanka and 4 for 27 against New Zealand in the semi-final. In the final at Lordâ€s, he contributed a valuable 26 off 37 balls as the West Indies defeated Australia to win their first World Cup.Julien also had a successful stint with English county side Kent from 1970 to 1977, taking 336 wickets and scoring 3,296 runs in 179 appearances. His international career ended after joining the rebel West Indies tour to apartheid South Africa in 1982–83.
Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles dropped a tough one on the road Thursday night, falling 34-17 to the New York Giants for their second straight loss and a 4-2 record.
After opening the season 4-0, the Eagles lost their first game to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, then suffered a disappointing road loss to the one-win Giants on a short week.
Jalen Hurts completed 24-of-33 passes for 283 yards and one touchdown, adding another score on the ground while throwing one interception. He connected with Dallas Goedert for a touchdown, with Goedert finishing with 110 receiving yards.
On the other side, Giants rookie Jaxson Dart went 17-of-25 for 195 yards, throwing one passing touchdown and adding a rushing score, connecting with Wan’Dale Robinson for a touchdown. Running back Cam Skattebo powered in three touchdowns, rushing for 98 yards on 19 carries.
Fans criticized Hurts and the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles for the disappointing loss and their use of the tush push on Thursday.
The Eagles opened the game with a 3-0 lead on their first possession but allowed the Giants to score on their first two drives, falling behind 13-3 before responding with a touchdown to close out the first quarter.
Both teams found the end zone once more in the second quarter during lengthy drives, with the Giants taking a 20-17 lead into halftime.
Philadelphia struggled to generate offensive momentum after the break, while New York put together a nine-play drive for the only third-quarter score, extending their lead to 27-17.
The Eagles’ struggles persisted in the fourth quarter, beginning with a three-and-out and followed by an interception that set up a quick Giants touchdown, extending the lead to 34-17 with 9:41 remaining. Philadelphia was unable to respond offensively, fumbling on their final possession of the game, and the score held until the final whistle.
The Eagles will aim to snap their skid with a lengthy break, returning to action on Oct. 19 on the road against the Minnesota Vikings.
IND vs WI Live Score, 2nd Test Match Day 1: Team India enters the second and final Test against West Indies with a focus on assessing Sai Sudharsanâ€s form and Nitish Kumar Reddyâ€s utility in home conditions.
The visitors, once a formidable force, now appear rudderless, a pale shadow of their past, with many players reluctant or lacking opportunities in T20 leagues. Their innings defeat in Ahmedabad underscored the decline, which head coach Darren Sammy described as a “terminal disease.†Legends Sir Vivian Richards, Sir Richie Richardson, and Brian Lara offered guidance during a mentoring session, but the West Indies dressing room still struggles for direction and belief.
For India, the match is about more than winning the series. Itâ€s an opportunity to strengthen their World Test Championship position and build confidence ahead of the home series against South Africa. Nitish Kumar Reddy retains his spot for his seam-bowling skills, while Sudharsan faces scrutiny after six low scores in seven innings, despite backing from skipper Shubman Gill. The depth of Indiaâ€s batting, including in-form KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja, makes the hosts overwhelming favourites.
The Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, a black soil track with a dry patch, promises good value for shots and quick finishes. Indiaâ€s top order is expected to dominate a West Indies attack where only Jayden Seals impressed in the first Test.
With a sharper focus, superior depth, and home advantage, Team India appears set for another ruthless, possibly three-day, victory, reinforcing the wide gap in belief and purpose between the two sides.

BOSTON — Jahmai Jones hit a two-run single in the fifth inning, and the Detroit Tigers hung on to defeat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 on Saturday, clinching a spot in the American League playoffs for the second consecutive season.
Less than 24 hours after the Red Sox sealed their postseason berth, the Tigers claimed at least a wild card spot and pushed the Houston Astros closer to elimination. Detroit still could win the AL Central title but would need help from Texas, which played Cleveland on Saturday night.
Keider Montero and four relievers held Boston to one run and seven hits. Tyler Holton (6-5) got four outs for the victory. Will Vest pitched the ninth for his 23rd save.

“Kind of a crazy ride, but it’s well worth it,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told his team in the clubhouse Saturday night during the celebration. “We went up, we went down, we went up again.”
The Tigers (87-74) led the division by as many as 14 games in July and still held a 9½-game lead on Sept. 11 before losses in 12 out of 14 games dropped them into a tie with Cleveland (86-74). The Guardians, who were in fourth place and 15½ games back on July 7, are 17-4 since Sept. 5 and hold the tiebreaker against Detroit.
Detroit has ace Tarik Skubal (13-6) lined up to pitch in Sunday’s regular-season finale, but the Tigers would love to save him for the postseason opener.

LOS ANGELES — A barechested Bryce Harper poured a bottle of Champagne over his head, soaking in the Philadelphia Phillies’ second straight NL East title.
Kyle Schwarber celebrated by chugging beer out of a hose as his teammates fed the contraption in the middle of a darkened visitors’ clubhouse after the Phillies rallied for a wild 6-5 victory in 10 innings over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night.
“You’ve got to enjoy this,” Schwarber said later, puffing on a fat cigar. “This doesn’t happen all the time.”
The Phillies hope it keeps happening all the way through October as they chase the franchise’s third World Series championship and first since 2008.

“We’re playing really good baseball right now and just got to keep going and keep understanding we’ve got a bigger picture,” Harper said. “We’ve got things on our mind that we want to win.”
With the second-place New York Mets idle Monday, the Phillies needed a win to become the first division champion in the majors this season. They blew three one-run leads before finally getting past the NL West-leading Dodgers for their ninth victory in 11 games.
Philadelphia had just one hit — Schwarber’s 53rd homer — until the seventh inning. But then Weston Wilson and Harper homered as Philly rallied against the defending World Series champions.
“They’re just tough and they’re resilient,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said about his team. “They just keep fighting and I’m proud of them. This is a really special group.”
After the Dodgers’ Max Muncy grounded out to end it, the Phillies gathered near the mound to celebrate. They posed for a photo on the field as red-clad fans cheered behind their dugout at Dodger Stadium.
Then the party was on.
It was the earliest division clinch in Phillies history, two days sooner than the 2011 team that won the NL East on Sept. 17. This squad got it done in Game 151, second-fastest behind those 2011 Phillies who did it in Game 150.
Philadelphia (90-61) has three straight 90-win seasons for the third time in franchise history.
“I feel like we’ve done such a great job this year,” Schwarber said. “We’ve had a lot of really big injuries happen to us and we just have that next-man-up mentality. I felt like guys came up, they stepped up right away and they got the job done. That’s how you win big baseball games.”
Since the July 31 trade deadline, the Phillies are 29-14.

They lost ace right-hander Zack Wheeler when he went on the injured list a month ago with a blood clot in his right shoulder. Wheeler was 10-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 24 starts when he was sidelined, but Philadelphia’s pitching depth has allowed the team to absorb such a loss.
It certainly helped that the Phillies acquired closer Jhoan Duran and center fielder Harrison Bader from Minnesota at the trade deadline.
“We’re a little bit different than we have been in the past,” Thomson said. “We can do some things. We’re going to slug but we also can play some small ball to win games, too. It’s a good balance.”
All-Star shortstop Trea Turner (right hamstring strain) and third baseman Alec Bohm (left shoulder inflammation) are both on the IL. Thomson said Bohm could return later this week at Arizona, while Turner could be back in time for the final homestand of the regular season.
The win made Thomson just the third manager in franchise history to win consecutive division titles, joining Charlie Manuel (2007-11) and Danny Ozark (1976-78). Thomson is the fourth manager in Major League Baseball history to reach the postseason in each of his first four full seasons. Among the other three is Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
“I don’t feel 62 right now,” Thomson said. “The last four years has been the most fun I’ve had in baseball. It’s because of the guys. They have a lot of fun.”
