Both Tom Jarvis and Anna Hursey entered the 2025 WTT Feeder Vila Nova De Gaia with high expectations, with Jarvis being the Men’s Singles 4th seed behind Cho Daesong, Kay Stumper and Alvaro Robles. Connor Green competing at the event as a wildcard was awarded a place in the main draw, avoiding the very difficult four player group stage and also one round of qualifying draw. Tin Tin Ho was also in action and started her campaign in the main draw. Ho and Green along with Jarvis and Hursey awere also in the field for the the Mixed Doubles event and both pairs were set to compete in the qualifying draw.
It was youngster Connor Green who exited the competition first, as he faced qualifier Frane Kojic. The experienced Croatian defeated England’s rising star 3-0 (3,5,8) ending Green’s singles competition in Porto.
Green alongside partner Tin Tin Ho had more success in the Mixed Doubles competition, seeded fourth in qualifying, as they started their competition against Argentinian pair Santiago Lorenzo & Camilla Arguelles, coming out on top 3-1 after dropping the first end. Jarvis and Hursey however exited at the same stage as they lost out in three straight to Kim Gaon and You Yerin of South Korea. Green and Ho went on to take out Japanese pair Kobayashi and Takea in fine fashion, without dropping an end.
Their reward was a clash against fourth seeds, and experienced Italian XD pair, John Oyebode and Gaia Monfardini, where again the newly formed English pair came out on top. This time with a very positive scoreline of 3-1, closing out the win 11-9 in the fourth. They sadly were unable to make it to the semi-final as they lost out to fellow qualifiers, See Jungwon and Heo Yerim of South Korea.
Green and Ho combine for an impressive XD run
In the Women’s Singles, top seed Hursey took out both Wegrzyn sisters of Poland both 3-0 on her way to reaching the quarter-final where she was halted by South Korea’s Heo Yerim 3-1,. Yerim who is currently the World Youth Girls Singles number 2 ranked player, positioned only two places above Hursey who is ranked 4th in the World in the junior category. However, Yerim is ranked much lower in the senior category, with a Senior World ranking of 149, compared to Hursey’s 54.
Tin Tin Ho took on qualifier Mariana Santa who was competing on home soil, and it was Ho who came out on top ending the run of Santa 3-0. Tin Tin continued her strong run of results by defeating Laura Watanabe of Brazil, the 12th seed, 3-1 to reach the round of 16. Ho’s impressive win streak came to an end at this stage, at the hands of Korean Byun Seoyoung, on WTT debut, despite taking the first end, the South Korean recovered to take the next three ends. Jarvis who came into the competition ranked 78 in the World was seeded fourth and was drawn into the top half of the main draw, where he started was given a bye in the first round before kickstarting his campaign with a victory over Guilherme Teodoro (WR 141). Teodoro took out renowned defender Yang Wang in the opening round. Jarvis this dispatched Italy’s Niagol Stoyanov over four games to reach the quarter final.
His opponent for the quarter final was none other than Portuguese legend Marcos Freitas, who was competing on home soil, and would want revenge for England’s recent victory over Portugal at the European Team Championships, a fixture in which he was unable to compete within due to injury. It was the Portuguese World ranked 99 who struck first, racing into a 2-0 lead and looked as if it was going to be Freitas who advanced to the semi-final before an inspired comeback was launched by Tom. Jarvis took the next two games both at deuce, 13-11 and 12-10, before taking his momentum and putting the game to bed with an emphatic 11-3 in the fifth scoreline.
Jarvis then took on yet another Portuguese opponent in the semi-final, this time in the form of Joao Geraldo, who overcame Jarvis at the European Team Championships in Zadar to force a decider between England and Portugal just a number of weeks prior. Geraldo raced into the lead and stormed into a 6-0 lead in the second, before Jarvis asserted his dominance on the game, taking the second 14-12 and the third 11-5. Jarvis lead 2-1 once again, a similar story to Zadar, before Geraldo struck back forcing a fifth and final end, and end in which the Portuguese National Champion took 11-5. Geraldo did go on to win the Men’s Singles competition with victory over Spain’s Alvaro Robles 3-1 in the final.
