Just mention Scotty Cameron Tour prototypes, and you’ve got the attention of hordes of golf gear nerds everywhere.
So Titleist is giving gear nerds what they want with the release of Scotty Cameron’s new Studio Xperimental Limited putters.
The Studio Xperimental Limited release offers new editions of the Squareback and Fastback shapes from the Studio Style line with a couple of Tour-inspired modifications, including a steel gray finish and plumber’s neck Fastback.
“Studio Xperimental is all about sharing with players something special: prototype-inspired setups crafted for those who demand performance and technology with a clean, tour-proven look,” founder Scotty Cameron said in a release. “With the line’s multi-material design, chain-link face milling, unique alignment features and custom grip and shaft, every element of Studio Xperimental is designed to inspire confidence — from setup to stroke.”
Keep reading below for more on the Studio Xperimental Limited putter line and my thoughts on the new release.
What is Studio Xperimental Limited?
The Xperimental name is nothing new to Scotty Cameron fans. The name is often applied to Tour-only prototype designs for the world’s best players, but some of those putters make their way to retail either in a limited release run or as a one-off creation on the Scotty Cameron Gallery.

The SCS insert and Chain-Link milling pattern continue to be featured.

With the new Studio Xperimental Limited, Cameron is giving consumers a chance to try the new mid-mallet shapes in the Studio Style line in some configurations that have proven popular on the PGA Tour.
Both putters feature I-beam plumbing necks, a tour-preferred Steel Grey PVD finish, a custom black graphite shaft and parallel sight-lines on the top line. For the Fastback, which is dubbed the Fastback 2 to denote the neck style, this is the first time the putter has been available to the public with a plumber’s neck. The current Studio Style line only features the Fastback (single-bend) and Fastback 1.5 (I-beam jet neck).
The graphite shaft is also a rarity for a Scotty Cameron retail release, even a limited one. In fact, it’s the first time since the 1993-94 Masters Choice Classic 1 Limited Run that a Cameron release features a graphite shaft.

Graphite shafts are a rarity in Scotty Cameron putters.

The limited-run putters also feature the same Studio Carbon Steel face insert with chain-link face milling from the Studio Style versions, but this one is black nickel-plated to match the Steel Gray PVD finish.
Who are the Studio Xperimental putters for?
Scotty Cameron fans and all kinds of gear-nerds will be clamoring for this release. However, the new Studio Xperimental putters will cater to a couple of specific golfers.
Players who prefer darker finished putters, like recently released Phantom black putters or the 2012-2013 Select line, will appreciate the muted and less reflective tones of the Steel Gray PVD. The darker finish is a common request on Tour.

The Fastback 2 is an all-new model to retail.

But what might be most sought-after is the Fastback 2, as the Fastback shape has not yet been available with a plumber’s neck. The Fastback is a more rounded head and fits the eyes of players who like softer lines, while the Squareback — as the name implies — is more angular.
My thoughts
The new Fastback and Squareback designs have proven to be very popular both on Tour and at the retail market, so it’s no surprise Cameron threw a few new options at consumers in the form of a limited release.

Xperimental Limited is an all-black look.

Personally, I’ve always been drawn to darker finished putters, and the horizontal two-tone alignment aids of the standard Studio Style versions aren’t something I need, so it’s nice to see a mostly monochromatic version of these new shapes. What’s interesting is that Cameron does offer a flipped version of the retail putter — a black putter with silver alignment aids — out on Tour, so it’s notable that they went with the single-color version.

Scotty Cameron Phantom Black putters | 3 things to know about new line

Scotty Cameron will typically tease out the next year’s product features in their late-season releases — as they presumably did with the Phantom Black — and the Studio Style line will likely get some extension. Will that include the Fastback 2? We won’t know for a little while longer, it seems.
It also seems apparent that Cameron is going all-in with the SCS insert and chain-link milling pattern. The chain-link milling has been a part of every Scotty Cameron release this year.
