Drew McIntyreâ€s suspension on WWE SmackDown wasnâ€t just a storyline twist—it was a setup to write him off television while he heads off to shoot a movie.
The November 7 episode of SmackDown ended in chaos after McIntyre stormed the ring during Cody Rhodes†non-title match against Aleister Black. After laying out the referee with a brutal Claymore kick, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis appeared on the stage and suspended McIntyre indefinitely without pay.
But now the real reason for the suspension has been revealed. On the November 10 episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer confirmed what fans suspected behind the scenes.
“Heâ€s doing a movie.â€
Bryan Alvarez followed up with a simple confirmation of McIntyreâ€s time away, “Yeah. So heâ€s gone for a while.â€
The angle was built over the course of the show. It began with Cody Rhodes celebrating his WWE Championship win over McIntyre at Saturday Nightâ€s Main Event. Things quickly escalated after Zelina Vega slapped Rhodes during an in-ring segment, prompting Aldis to book a match between Rhodes and Aleister Black.
The match itself was evenly paced until McIntyre ran in and attacked both the referee and Rhodes, triggering an all-out brawl that ended in a no-contest. Damian Priest then made a surprise return to help even the odds against McIntyre and Black, setting the stage for future tension.
McIntyreâ€s suspension came moments later, with Aldis declaring the punishment live on-air in response to McIntyreâ€s actions. The dramatic moment served as a clean exit point for the Scottish Warrior while he shifts focus to the film world.
WWE has not revealed details about the movie project, but this is not the first time McIntyre has crossed over into Hollywood. His last appearance before this angle was a title loss to Rhodes and a vicious Hell in a Cell match against CM Punk.
