Pro gets emotional after earning tour card with epic finish

Golf is a tough, often emotional game. But the frustration is multiplied many times when you go from your local muni to golf’s cutthroat professional tours, where pros fight for their career survival every year. Just ask Eddie Pepperell.

The popular pro has experienced a career swoon of late, losing his DP World Tour card in the process. But this week, Pepperell put together a dramatic four-birdie finish in DP World Tour Q-School to reclaim his status for 2026.

Pepperell’s emotional reaction in a post-round interview spoke volumes.

Here’s what you need to know.

Eddie Pepperell closes with four birdies to reclaim DP World Tour card

Back in 2018, Pepperell was the briefly the toast of pro golf. He won twice on the DP World Tour and finished T6 at the Open Championship. Then he earned a T3 at the 2019 Players Championship to get within the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

But Pepperell’s game fell off sharply in the ensuing years. By this time last year, Pepperell was forced to go to DP World Tour Q-School to secure his playing status. He had an eagle putt on the final hole that would have given him his tour card, but he missed it and was forced to play a combined schedule in 2025.

Back in Q-School this year, Pepperell made it through the second stage last week to qualify for this week’s final stage at Infinitum Golf in Spain. The final stage is a grueling six-round tournament with the top 20 finishers earning their DP World Tour cards.

Pepperell had a slow start with scores of 70 and 71 in the first two rounds, but then he shot 68-67-68 to get into contention with one round to go.

But with four holes left in the final round, Pepperell was on the outside looking in. He’d need an epic finish to earn his tour card. And he got it.

The 34-year-old English veteran reeled off four consecutive birdies on the final four holes to finish at 19 under, one shot clear of what he needed.

Pepperell tears up after securing tour card: ‘I’m pretty proud’

It was an incredibly clutch finish for Pepperell, one that will result in golf fans getting to watch the popular pro more often next year.

But for Pepperell, the finish could be a career saver. Given the struggles he’s experienced over the last several years, Pepperell understandably grew emotional in an interview conducted immediately after the finish.

“I’m pretty proud of myself actually,” Pepperell admitted. “That was a tough day and a great finish.”

Pepperell revealed that he had low expectations for the week, and despite the finish, he faced adversity throughout.

“I didn’t have too many goals going into these two weeks, I just was looking forward to playing some golf to be quite honest, and hoping that I’d play well,” Pepperell explained. “And this week felt like a bit of a struggle at times, and never more so than today mid-way through the round, but I really hung in there and I’m delighted.”

He then provided a small window into what his accomplishment felt like after fighting to keep his career alive over the past few years.

“It’s tough to put into words really. The game’s been tough for a while, and I’ve made it hard for myself as well,” Pepperell said, beginning to choke up. “The game is so difficult still, so I just want to take forward what I’ve just done there.”

With tears welling in his eyes, Pepperell said, “sorry, guys” to the interviewer and cameraman, then walked off to soak in his monumental feat.
