The Pittsburgh Penguins signed the 40-year-old goaltender to a professional tryout contract on Friday, the team announced.

Fleury will practise with the Penguins on Sept. 26 before playing in part of their exhibition game on Sept. 27 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“The entire Penguins organization is honoured to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh,” said Penguins GM Kyle Dubas in a statement. “This past year everyone witnessed how beloved and respected Marc is in the game of hockey, but the adoration goes beyond his accolades and career. Marc means so much to our team, our fans and the City of Pittsburgh because of the person he is and the example he set. The Penguins feel he and his family are most-deserving of this opportunity to celebrate this full-circle moment back where it all started in front of the black and gold faithful.”

Fleury, also known as “Flower”, spent his first 13 seasons in Pittsburgh after being selected first overall in the 2003 draft. He was a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Penguins in 2009, 2016 and 2017.

He holds nearly every goaltending record in Penguins franchise history, including games played (691), wins (375) and shutouts (44).

Fleury also won his first Vezina Trophy as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2020-21 season.

The Sorel-Tracy, Que., native played last season with the Minnesota Wild and announced that the 2024-25 season would be his last.

There is no immediate indication that Fleury plans to change his retirement plans, but he will instead finish by playing a pre-season game back where it all began.
