While players from the Ormesby Pathway Development Centre dominated both the U15 and the U13 events, Zain Ali made his journey from Birmingham all the way up to Teesside worthwhile when he won the U17 Singles in the Ormesby U17 2 Star Open Championship on 7th September at the Ormesby Club in Cleveland.

The entry for the events meant that it was practical to run one competition at each of the three age levels for all of the boys and girls who entered.

In the U17 Singles, Ali was unbeaten with his main victory over the player who finished in 2nd place, Sebastion Runcanu from Barnsley in Yorkshire in 3 straight games.  Ali’s victory over the 3rd place player, Newcastle’s Abu Sami Osman, with a closer match which went to deuce in the 4th game.  In the battle for second place, Runcanu defeated Osman at 11-9 in the 4th and 11-8 in the decider.

The winner of the U15 Singles was Charlie Burnside who after losing the first game against his Ormesby team mate, Jack Walker, at 11-5 won the next 3 games to take the top spot.  Against the player who finished in 3rd position, Oscar Dixon from Driffield, Burnside had an easier win in straight games but the match for 2nd place between Walker and Dixon was one of the closest sets of the day with Walker wining by 11-8 in the decider.  The player in 4th position, Mindy Gao, was Burnside’s closest match with Burnside winning in 5 games.
