Notre Dame remains winless heading into Week 4 of the FBS season.

The Fighting Irish fell to 0-2 on the season after losing 41-40 to Texas A&M at home on Friday night.

Some college football fans were left wondering if last year’s national championship runner-up can expect to make the playoff this fall.

Saturday night’s loss was particularly painful given Notre Dame’s late defensive collapse against Texas A&M.

The Fighting Irish were leading with 13 seconds left on the clock when Texas A&M tight end Nate Boerkircher caught a touchdown pass to tie the game.

Randy Bond made the extra point to seal the Aggies’ comeback win

Notre Dame started out the season by conceding another narrow defeat with a 27-24 loss to No. 5 Miami on Aug. 31.

This marks the ninth time Notre Dame has started a season with an 0-2 record in program history, per The Ringer’s Tate Frazier.

It’s also the second time in four years Notre Dame has gotten off to an 0-2 start while being ranked as a top-10 team ahead of both losses.

Marcus Freeman’s program also lost two straight games to start the 2022 season. The Fighting Irish ultimately finished that campaign with a 9-4 record.

The only other top-10 program to record an 0-2 start since 2000 was Florida State last season, per Josh Dubow of the Associated Press.

The Seminoles, ranked No. 10 before each of its first two games of the season, went on to finish the 2024 campaign with a 2-10 record.

Notre Dame, ranked No. 6 heading into the season and No. 8 before the loss to Texas A&M, will hope for a more successful recovery to the team’s winless start beginning with next Saturday’s game against Purdue.
