Despite a 2-0 start, the Cincinnati Bengals are quickly becoming Super Bowl outsiders with star quarterback Joe Burrow headed for an extended absence.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Burrow will miss at least three months because of a toe injury that requires surgery.

â–¶ï¸ Full Jaguars-Bengals Recap
Burrow left the Bengals’ Week 2 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday after he was sacked by Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead in the second quarter. He stayed down on the field after the play before walking to Cincinnati’s sideline under his own power.
The signal-caller eventually required assistance as made his way into the locker room with a noticeable limp, later taking off his left shoe (via Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer).
Burrow completed seven of his 13 pass attempts for 76 yards and one touchdown without getting picked off prior to leaving the contest.
The two-time Pro Bowler has established himself as one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks when healthy, but he’s been hampered by multiple injuries throughout the first five years of his career.
Burrow’s rookie season came to an end after just 10 games due to a torn ACL and MCL that he sustained while getting hit in the pocket. His 2023 campaign also ended early after he suffered a wrist injury in Week 11 that ultimately required surgery.
Although Burrow threw for just 113 yards in Cincinnati’s 2025 season-opener, he’s coming off a 2024 season in which he led the NFL with 4,918 yards through the air and 43 touchdown passes.
He earned Comeback Player of the Year honors for the second time in his career and finished No. 4 in AP MVP voting for his efforts.
Jake Browning will now operate under center for Cincinnati, perhaps for the rest of the season based on the timeline provided by Schefter. That presents a serious blow to the team’s playoff hopes.
