How Much Money R Ashwin Earned In His IPL Career: Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin retired from the IPL on Wednesday, August 27, a few months ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

The 38-year-old Ashwin from Tamil Nadu began his IPL career with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He is one of the few players who have been part of the IPL since the first season in 2008.

Ashwin made his IPL debut for CSK in 2009. Apart from CSK, Ashwin played for four other franchises: Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).

R Ashwin cited in his retirement social media post that he is keen to begin his journey in overseas T20 leagues. Indian players have to retire from all of Indian cricket—international, domestic, and IPL; they also can’t feature in state T20 leagues in India like the TNPL—to be allowed to feature in T20 leagues outside India.

Last year, Dinesh Karthik retired from Indian cricket and then became the first Indian to play in the SA20 in South Africa. Ashwin is expected to go the same route, and he could be seen playing in leagues like the BBL, the Hundred, MLC, and the CPL.

Ashwin said in his retirement note, “Special day and hence a special beginning.

They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.

Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me.”

Here’s How Much Money R Ashwin Earned In His IPL Career

Ashwin was with CSK from 2008 to 2015 until the franchise was suspended for two seasons. In the first three IPL seasons, Ashwin’s salary was INR 12 lakhs, which increased to INR 3.91 crore for the next three seasons. In 2014, he was retained by CSK for INR 7.5 crore, which also remained his salary for his two seasons at Pune in 2016 and 2017.

In 2018, he was bought by Punjab for INR 7.6 crore in the mega-auction and was made their captain for two seasons. Ahead of the IPL 2020 season, R Ashwin was traded from Punjab to Delhi Capitals, and his salary remained the same.

Ashwin then spent three seasons at Rajasthan Royals at a salary of INR 5 crore each. He had a homecoming in IPL 2025 when he was bought by CSK for INR 9.75 crore.

So, Ashwin’s total IPL salary from 2008 to 2025 adds up to INR 97.24 crore.

R Ashwin retired from the IPL with 187 wickets, the fifth-most by a bowler in the IPL’s history, while featuring in 221 games. He won two IPL titles, in 2010 and 2011 with CSK, playing a significant role in both victories for MS Dhoni’s team.
