Jameis Winston earned his first start of the season in the New York Giants’ 27-20 loss at home on Sunday with Jaxson Dart sidelined.
Jaxson Dart suffered a concussion in the Giants’ Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears after exiting in the fourth quarter. Dart has taken plenty of hits this season as a major threat in the running game, posting 317 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground in his rookie year.
With Dart sidelined for Sunday’s game against Green Bay, veteran Winston took over, nearly guiding the Giants to a win before a late-game interception and fumble sealed the loss, dropping them to 2-9 and extending their losing streak to five games.
Winston threw for 201 yards while completing 19-of-29 passes with one interception and ran in a touchdown. Devin Singletary added two rushing scores.
Fans reacted to Winston’s first start with the Giants, noting he should have earned snaps over Russell Wilson from the start and pointing to the big personality he brings that helps energize the field.
Packers quarterback Jordan Love finished with 174 yards and two touchdowns while completing 13-of-24 passes. Malik Willis stepped in and completed both of his pass attempts for a touchdown. Green Bay improved to 6-3-1 on the season.
Green Bay trailed 7-0 after one quarter before storming back in the second as both teams traded touchdowns to enter halftime tied at 13.
The Packers regained the lead in the third with a touchdown and later stopped New York on downs after a nearly 10-minute drive.
New York chewed up the clock again in the fourth, scoring on a 7:59 drive to take a 20-19 lead. Green Bay answered with a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to go up by seven with just over four minutes remaining.
Winston threw a late-game interception and was later sacked for a fumble in a Hail Mary situation with 10 seconds left, sealing the loss.
New York will hit the road to face the Detroit Lions next Sunday,
