    History

LOS ANGELES — Cal State LA’s women’s volleyball team picked up a three-set win in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match on Friday in University Gym.

Cal State LA (16-6, 12-3 CCAA) overcame a stern challenge from Cal Poly Humboldt in the second set and went on to a 25-15, 30-28, 25-21 win. The Golden Eagles remain in a second-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino with three matches remaining. Cal State LA has already wrapped up a spot in the six-team CCAA Tournament.

Ayjah Landers led a balanced Cal State LA offense with 14 kills and three blocks, while Samarah DaCoud had 13 kills, two aces and seven digs. Zuhal Cetin had 12 kills, three aces and a match-high 14 digs.

Graysen Trupp had nine kills and one block for Cal Poly Humboldt (2-21, 2-13 CCAA), which pushed Cal State LA to five sets in a conference match earlier this season in Arcata.

Seriah Demski had a season-high 39 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while Madison Clark had five kills and five blocks.

Cal State LA had a 49-34 advantage in kills and an 8-5 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had six aces and seven errors, while Cal Poly Humboldt also had six aces and seven errors.

Cal State LA started quickly and opened up an 11-3 lead on consecutive kills by Landers, DaCoud, Mariana Alvarado and DaCoud. The Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 16-7 after an ace by Alvarado and got to set point after a kill by DaCoud that made it 24-14. After the ‘Jacks staved off one set point, a service error ended it.

The second set was a gripping battle that featured 22 ties and nine lead changes and both teams had chances to win it. A kill by Landers fought off one set point and 24-23 and a kill by DaCoud fought off another at 25-24. Cal State LA then got a set point at 26-25 after a kill by Cetin, but a service error tied it again. Cal State LA got another set point at 27-26, but a kill by Isabella Hartwig tied it for the ‘Jacks at 27-27. A kill by Cetin gave the Golden Eagles a third set point at 28-27, but a kill by Kendall Fenstermacher tied it again at 28-28.

The fourth time was the charm for the Golden Eagles as a kill by Landers made it 29-28 and a kill by DaCoud gave the Golden Eagles the set.

Cal State LA jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the final set, but the ‘Jacks scored seven straight points to tie it at 10-10. Kills by DaCoud and Cetin and a block by Demski and Havannah Vogel gave the Golden Eagles a 13-10 lead and they never looked back. Cal State LA got to match point at 24-20 after a service error and then closed out the match on a kill by Vogel.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
