Former WWE Star Says Trying To Get Laid Resulted In Getting His Job Back

Jimmy Wang Yang was just looking for some “company,†but he ended up getting a job with WWE.

Yang spoke with Wentworth Brothers Entertainment and shared a detailed story about how his attempt to score with “really hot blonde†woman led to him getting his infamous gimmick in WWE. “Me trying to get laid turned me into an Asian redneck,†Yang joked.

As Yang explained it, he had been working for Ring Of Honor at the time. He was living in Cincinnati, but ended up connecting with a WWE Diva Search contestant and wanted to go meet up with her in Lexington at a WWE event. Yang went backstage to try and speak with someone about passes, but ran into Vince McMahon instead. McMahon asked where heâ€d been, not realizing that heâ€d fired him, and then immediately sought to fix that issue.

Yang then said he was sitting in catering, but got called to ringside where they asked him to take a practice bump for a spot in the infamous Shawn Michaels and “God†versus Vince and Shane McMahon in a No Holds Barred match at Backlash 2006. Michael ‘PS†Hayes wasnâ€t sure they should let Yang do it since he was under contract, but McMahon said he should be.

“I went back to catering and finish my steak, got the tickets, everythingâ€s good,†Jimmy Wang Yang explained (h/t WrestleTalk). “Then they come to me right before Iâ€m about to go meet that girl and they say, ‘Hey, can you come to Raw tomorrow?†I was like, “Ah man, you know what I have planned tonight?†But itâ€s in Columbus, itâ€s close by, like I should be a responsible adult and get this job back.â€

Yang showed up at RAW and thought that was his lucky night with the woman, but WWE brought him back for another match, this time in Cincinnati, where they offered him a job.

“So Iâ€m like, man, I want to go thank Vince for this. Because itâ€s kind of odd that you hire someone back that many times. So I knock on the door and he goes ‘Jimmy, come in!†I say ‘hey Vince, I just want to thank you.†[Vince says] ‘Oh, I didnâ€t even realize you were fired, but anyways, last time I didnâ€t let you talk because youâ€re this Korean dude that grew up in Georgia! Now weâ€re going to make a negative a positive, Iâ€m going to make you the Asian redneck! Hahaha! Thatâ€s funny, and your nameâ€s going to be Wang Yang because it rhymes! Jimmy Wang Yang! Thatâ€s hilarious!’â€

Yang told McMahon that he would do anything they wanted as long as his check came each week. McMahon responded by saying ‘oh, good†and kicking him out of his office.

“I close the door and was like, that was the weirdest conversation Iâ€ve ever had with anybody in my life,†Yang said. “And definitely it being that guy, you know, and his reactions and that laugh and stuff, it was crazy. So thatâ€s how Jimmy Wang Yang came about, because your boy was trying to get laid one night.â€
